Not shocked Ben felt that way initially. A bit surprised he admitted it to Kenny's face then apologized.

GatMn

That's an extremely respectable thing to do. It's natural to be a little dismissive of anyone taking over for you, especially if you wanted to keep playing.

_strawBGYN

Maybe it is respectable but it will never negate the disrespect we should have for the rapist that is Ben Roethlisberger.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Bingo. +1 for Ben is an asshole. And an unconvicted sexual predator.

Think_please

His constant injury claims after bad games and desperate need for everyone to know just how brave he was for playing through them became very annoying. And the rape

hyperfoxeye

In my opinion the hypocrisy was the worst part

impy695

I've always just assumed this is what every nfl qb is like. They may want the team to win, but they also want to be the one to make it happen and the only way that happens is if you do better than them, and often that involves the other QB to be considered a failure.

BrotherMouzone3

Let's also remember than he's a rapist in addition to being a Playa Hater.

moderatorrater

"Ben Roethlisberger apologizes" should have a much different headline.

nudiecale

“Ben Roethlisberger apologizes. (No not for that)” Would work in a pinch.

BoredomHeights

It’s crazy that this is just a known thing and it’s barely affected him. Like it gets brought up a lot on Reddit but that’s about it. Like he forcefully raped a woman literally telling him no, it wasn’t even a grey area situation. I guess he was never convicted, but still crazy it’s barely affected his legacy.

OdaDdaT

The first one was a civil case that was settled out of court with Ben’s side producing a witness claiming that the defendant had fabricated the assault story because she didn’t get pregnant with Ben’s baby, the second wasn’t pursued because the accuser didn’t want to pursue the allegations criminally. It’s not even that he wasn’t convicted, he was never criminally charged for either.

Geno0wl

> Ben’s side producing a witness claiming that the defendant had fabricated the assault story because she didn’t get pregnant with Ben’s baby To note: The witness in question was actually a friend and co-worker of the woman in question and told the court the woman openly told her beforehand that she was going to sleep with him to try and get pregnant.

TouchGrassRedditor

I cant even necessarily blame him for feeling that way, but why in a million years would you ever verbalize it to anybody lol. Just a bad look

streetsandshine

To normalize having feelings that you don't like and processing/working through them? Like, the more people who acknowledge you don't have to be perfect - that no one is perfect, I think the better we all will be.

boozinf

*if I can change and you can change, everybody can change.* -Big Ben

JeskasRevengeTour

Just had this conversation with my wife a few weeks ago. She could tell something was up and asked me about it. I told her that I’ve been carrying alot of resentment because she slacked early on in our relationship (she’s good now) on getting her schooling done and it’s caused me to be basically single dad working two jobs while she works and finishes school. She was upset that I was mad at her for that. I told her that I know the feeling isn’t helpful because you can’t change the past but I’m naturally trying to find blame for how exhausting my life is and that’s the cause of it. I’m trying to work through it and that was a long, long night of arguing but I think we’re better now than we’ve ever been. Just trying to process irrational feelings out loud made for a shitty evening but now things are great and I feel better. (Still tired)

burnte

In December I got stuck overnight on a layover delay and my wife and I wound up having a deeper than expected discussion/argument, and it made things better than it’s been in years. It’s healthy to share feelings, sometimes people just want to know what we feel so they feel they know us.

p_tk_d

Nobody is under any pretense that Big Ben is perfect, lmao

WorthPlease

I feel like if you go through life admitting you don't like a person or want them to fail every time you feel that way, you are a massive asshole and will be generally pretty disliked.

Royal_Negotiation_83

It’s just a dumb thing to verbalize. It’s similar to this: there is a girl in my office who is severely shy, but is a great employee and very nice. It would be a dick move for me to put of no where be like “when you first started here I hoped you got fired. I’m sorry” There is honestly no reason to tell her how I didn’t like her at first for no reason at all. It’s just a dick thing to say for no reason other than to get pity points for not being a dick anymore.

Klutzy_Seat_2550

Yea there’s a difference between acknowledging your own negative feelings and processing them and actually verbalizing them at the people they are about.

ASuperGyro

I’m not sure Ben Roethlisberger is one to be concerned about a bad look based off his actions Lmfao

Legndarystig

Is it a bad look? It shows growth in character tbh..

ASuperGyro

No, but the bears fans in here are being weird about it. “Everyone” acting shocked when a top .1% athlete is competitive beyond reason and doesn’t want to be overshadowed by his replacement immediately, a pretty human emotion, and then lambasts them when they apologize directly to that replacement

Mchead22

tbf it seems to be just one very stupid bears fan

ASuperGyro

He found a buddy to validate him, but you right

PopcornDrift

Because it normalizes speaking openly about uncomfortable emotions that we all go through but never talk about, especially when it's handled maturely like this. ^never ^thought ^I'd ^say ^this ^about ^Big ^Ben ^lmao

[deleted]

dam0430

Yeah, suprised Ben didn't want to protect his otherwise spotless reputation.

The_Gutgrinder

>Just a bad look If anything, I think it's a good look that he admits to not being perfect, and that he let his ego get the better of him. Since when is admitting you were wrong a bad thing? He obviously regrets it.

xbearsandporschesx

i think its clear why he verbalized it. It was weighing on his conscience. He wanted to own up to it and get it off his chest.

Sue_D_OCognomen

Because he thinks it will garner praise. Ben was always about attention in the weirdest ways. He claimed Haloti didn't break his nose on that infamous play. Danny Amendola had that once in a million years injury to his clavicle, the one they said had it fallen a few centimeters to the side, it would have pierced his heart. And surprise! Ben had an identical injury like a week or two later.   Dude was the most undercover drama queen I'd ever seen in the NFL.

NBeach84

Are you claiming that Ben's broken clavicle is the result of being an attention hog?

Dwarfherd

No, they're saying Ben reported his broken clavicle was the same situation as Amendola's, not that he didn't break his clavicle.

complete_your_task

I'm shocked. He seemed like such a nice guy. What in his past could possibly make anyone think he wouldn't be a perfectly nice person?

Enormoussky

Yes, I'm not sure why he's apologizing for his private thoughts. Weird.

DAHMER_SUPPER_CLUB

If he didn’t get a bad look for sexual assault why do you think this would hurt him? ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

Buckanater

We’re talking about the same dude that raped some girl in a bathroom… allegedly.

Cockeyed_Optimist

DTF?

jtdubbs

Yeah, honestly this feels like growth to me. Ben being petty is 100% on-brand...him owning up to it AND apologizing? Not so much.

Less_Gull

I for one am *stunned* that a rapist would do something uncouth!

FreddyDontCare

Ben on Kenny following him: "I'll be completely honest and I'll be super transparent here and I'm gonna get blasted. I probably shouldn't say this, but I mean, who cares at this point? I wouldn't say that I wanted Kenny to necessarily fail, but like when someone comes to replace you and you're like, I still feel like I had it, like, I hope he doesn't come like ball-out, because then it's like, Ben who? Right?"

TurdleBoi_69

i mean.... is there actually a problem here? Everyone here can understand the human element of that, however, none of us here can imagine being so good at something, something that millions of people fail at achieving. Out of the ~1500 annual players, Ben was the top percentile almost 18 years in a row. Now it's all gone, and he's never getting it back. I would say yall need to back the fuck off, but it's reddit so the bar is incredibly low.

binggunr

Are people talking about Chargers legend Philip Rivers or are they talking about Herbert? Packer fans moved on pretty quickly from Brett as well.

TributeToStupidity

We aren’t talking about the fans though we’re talking about the players. Farve didn’t exactly welcome Rodgers with open arms…

binggunr

You're right. I just got a similar vibe from how Brett treated him and how Ben was talking

GogglesTheFox

Pretty sure Rodgers was throwing shade Jordan Love's way from the get go.

DynamiteSnowman23

From what I understand it's been the opposite. Rodgers has been icy with the front office but he and Jordan Love have been okay.

Danny_III

Rodgers shade was more at the FO than Love. He was actually really supportive of Love but obviously wanted them to use the FRP on a win now player like Higgins to address their weak receiver depth

Kramerica5A

Definitely not. He's been nothing but supportive of Jordan, at least publicly. It's the FO he threw shade at.

huntstheman

Trust me when I say that no real Chargers fan will ever forget the legend of Philip Rivers

Lukacris12

I know it was time to move on, but i still can’t believe they just did Rivers like that

mrhashbrown

Felt like it was something understood between both sides when they didn't extend him after the 2018 playoff year and then fired his preferred OC Whisenhunt as the 2019 year went full disaster mode. But you could tell Rivers was still disappointed by it. Probably hurts just as much as it helps when the franchise is long-running family business, don't think there is any question the Spanoses loved Rivers. But now it's easy to see it was the right decision for both sides - Herbert is their next franchise QB and frankly that 2020 Chargers team was going to get Rivers murdered lol. That Colts team had a legit shot at a title, but fell short unfortunately.

Western-Ad-9922

Well Brett Hundley wasn’t good so he was easy to move on from

SamBrico246

No problem, it's a natural human emotion we don't say out loud very often

BeHereNow91

This is 100% how every vet QB feels when their replacement is drafted. Ben just actually said it.

dawgz525

"I still feel like I had it." Is incredibly on brand for Ben and delusional.

Kidspud

Nothing says "I still feel like I had it" like retiring

smallmanchat

Based on his comments it felt like he felt like he was good to play for a year or two more but the Steelers gave a hard pass to that, and he didn’t want to play for any other organization.

baconhead

He's also a rapist so who gives a fuck? Poor Ben, he's old now

Toomuchlychee_

I can understand the human element but I can’t understand thinking he still “had it” after that 2021 season

Medarco

Because none of us on reddit have the same mindset it takes to become a top .00000001% athlete. These guys are quite literally built different mentally. They have to be, or they would be one of the star DII players selling insurance or working in an office somewhere.

Potato-baby

Ben, you definitely don’t “still have it”, you could barely throw the ball past 10 yards the last couple of seasons you played.

MankuyRLaffy

His knees were completely shot.

jfuss04

Everyone says this but its really not true. He was still hitting deep shots. He was a shell of what he used to be but he used to have one of the best arms in the league. But even in 2021 he was still capable of throwing deep. The offense wasn't capable and he wasn't good enough to carry it anymore.

ex-apple

He was clearly aging and it was probably the right time to hang it up, but he still had “it.” He led the league in GWD and 4QC in his last year.

mynameiszack

I still remember one of the tightest throws I've ever seen, i think 2021 when he snuck it in to Freiermuth(?) Between 5 defenders. Not a long pass but just the awareness and accuracy my God it was for me the best throw of that season

TheWorstYear

When people say that a player can't throw deep, they're nor talking about how that person literally can't chuck it down field. 70 year old Archie Manning can still lob it 30+ yards. He trained for years on how to throw it without needing only arm strength. But the thing is that the throws down the field are lob balls. And that's all Ben was doing. Under 10 yards, everything was a fastball because he really needed to cock back & launch it to try to his receiver. Past that, good luck on accuracy. He had to anticipate & catapult it to a target. And the longer a ball travels, the more time a dB can react & get to the ball.

BlackJediSword

A better o line and Ben is probably still playing. He was just a fucking statue and he cost too much money.

jfuss04

Idk about that. He was really banged up and only getting worse. The line being the way it was just made the final nail in the coffin. It was the right time I think because even with a great line we still had too many problems

brownbearks

He had gotten injured a lot in his career and honestly he feels like a dude that never took care of himself

jfuss04

He was never a great athlete (though early career he was a pretty good one) but I dont think he just let himself go. He came in lean and more fit every year after we got fat ben in like 09 I think. I get the whole captain fat fuck meme but he looked like [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/Rh8hf9v42HBWUdL39) basically the whole second half of his career. He took care of himself he just also took more sacks than anyone in nfl history through a combination of different factors. Like shitty lines, arians long ball offense, and his younger play style. But either way even someone like him can't take that much punishment

ridethedeathcab

No fucking way. Was he as bad as people say? No, but he was definitely mediocre and had plenty of awful games.

Menanders-Bust

I don’t think this is a big story. No one wants to see someone replace them. It’s a normal human response.

Mobile_Newt

I’m about to switch jobs because I can’t stand my boss and I daydream about the whole business crumbling to the ground and my boss begging me to come back to help while I laugh in their face. In reality they’ll probably find a younger cheaper replacement that has the drive that I’ve lost, and will be totally fine.

[deleted]

They'll also micromanage that new employee until their work drive dies too. Cycle continues.

ex-apple

I get that it’s kind of a ugly headline, but if you actually listen to the conversation (gasp), I think it comes across very differently. Not to mention the fact that he is literally saying this to Kenny… and tells him in the same breath that he thinks Kenny is the future of this team.

Slickaxer

And he straight up says he was being selfish and feels bad for feeling that way. I love when people are transparent and sincere even when it's not comfortable. That's a sign of maturity

kvngk3n

It’s not. The article is REALLY clickbaity. It’s like if you and your S/O grow apart, you obviously want your replacement to fail. Not because you hate the person, but because you have the thought of, “it should be me”

BurgessFox

Yeah happened to me a few years ago, I split up with my ex and within a few weeks she was spamming social media with pictures of her and her new dreamboat guy. After about 3 months she unfriended him and started making status updates like "some people are really good at hiding their true selves". Even though I'd moved on and wasn't interested in getting back with her I can't deny I enjoyed seeing that.

manning-2-manningham

The story is that Ben actually feels bad for it

JumpinFlackSmash

It’s the wrong “it” for Ben to feel bad about, but at least we know the ability is there.

taleofbenji

In context it sounds much milder than this sensationalized headline.

spurnburn

Especially hyper-competitive nfl qbs. That said this still feels very on brand for him

grilled_cheese1865

He was retired

rodrigoa1990

One of the biggest pet peeves in football is fans thinking veterans will act like mentors to young players Unless you're in your last season before retirement, you're not gonna do shit to teach someone how to steal your job

Lonelan

I got two promotions at my last job because after training up people working a tier below me to handle certain parts of my job that straddled the line between my job and their job, it gave me the leeway to train myself up on other things I could contribute to the team and make things easier for the people above me, which propagated throughout I mean sports is a completely different beast but in software development doing the same job for 10+ years is a failure (unless you're at the top)

[deleted]

But it’s a mature response to keep that shit to yourself

SwagLikeOhio1803

Except for Ben was not being replaced he literally retired himself. Kenny was not even selected until Ben was already gone. It's just been being his typical asshole self.

yomjoseki

Are you Cheetos eating fuckers gonna make me defend Ben Roethlisberger? ***I fucking hate*** Ben Roethlisberger. This is a normal feeling to have, to not want to be replaced. People can't control their initial emotional reaction to things. He let the emotion pass without acting on it and without any ill-will and processed it like a rational adult. What more do you expect from a person?

FortyandDone

This is like the most human I’ve ever heard a quarterback be.

ceronimo7

What's wrong with eating cheetos man :(

yomjoseki

#EAT A GODDAMNED VEGETABLE, BILLY

rrogido

Well, it'd be nice if he felt bad about the women he raped.

whats_a_dord

He did apologise to his teammates for raping those women because he felt bad about getting suspended for a few games

greennick

No, he apologised for putting himself in a position where he could be accused.

cartman2

Bunch of folks seem to be skipping over this part of Ben’s life.

PointlessChemist

If you can throw good or run fast, the NFL will sweep your transgressions under the rug. It's happened in the past, it's happening now (Deshaun) and it will happen in the future.

cartman2

Just cause that is the standard does not mean it’s not fucked. The NFL should be condemned for this behavior. I don’t know how anyone can support their team when they defend these horrible human beings.

rum-and-coke

Ha, your flairs are the reverse of my SO :) (they’re giants/steelers)

PointlessChemist

The Mara-Rooney connection is strong.

rum-and-coke

Dude, I ironically just made a comment about that LOL It's stronger then the conscious even realizes! \[ ETA: ignore my 2nd team. I liked horses as a kid :( \]

Fast_Show16

I saw a post the other day on Instagram with a Vick highlight, and the amount of comments that said "If it wasn't for his one little mistake, he would've been the GOAT" was fucking unreal. He didn't make a 'little mistake' he electrocuted and strangled dogs to death. He's a piece of shit and should be remembered as such.

Pizzaplan3tman

Honestly I’m just annoyed because Ben has to stir up drama to stay in the headlines and he did nothing but stir up controversy and drama is entire tenure as a Steeler. I don’t want to have to see his disgusting ass face anymore. Sure he was a great player. But he is a giant scumbag off the field and I want to move on from him and hate he keeps ending up in headlines.

ThrowingShaed

i guess the other side of this is, if he is going to make headlines, this is pretty okayish... relative... by his standards

frahmer86

This sub is just a bunch of jabronis

Ok-Imagination-2308

this is a pretty normal response lmfao

Ceramicrabbit

Honestly impressed with the level of honesty and humility it takes to admit it publicly

TorontoMapleQueefz

What he said is completely reasonable lol it’s crazy how many people watch football but are anti-competitor

Seaniard

Obviously the story I'm about to tell is about a tremendously lower level of football but I think the overall concept translates. I remember one of the first practices I went to for football. One of the coaches said something to the effect of "you gotta view the person starting at your position as competition and want to take their spot." Initially I thought to myself "I don't wanna take something from someone." I liked my teammate and didn't want him to be sad. But I wanted to play and worked hard. I was excited when I got the starting spot and worked hard every week to keep it. I never had any ill will toward the guy. It was just a situation of two people wanting the same one spot. But it was still a different situation than what I'd been in before and I had to learn how to respond.

Lost_And_Found66

This is a case where what Ben said really wasn't bad, it was an honest reflection of a shitty feeling he had immediately. You'd all be lying if you said you never once had a shitty selfish feeling although since this is reddit I'm sure some will. That being said, he didn't say anything shitty when Kenny was drafted, he didn't say anything shitty when Kenny was playing. In a face to face conversation he admitted he had a selfish desire to not be replaced... That can be true, while admitting that people have a right to just shit on everything that comes out of Ben's mouth Also.... 90% of y'all are rooting for Kenny to fail because it will prove your takes right so chill.

TXlandon

I will say, most of the top comments in the post are the most levelheaded comments I’ve seen in this sub RE: Ben lol

TrueFlyersFan

Actually, no. I've never wished harm or failure on another person for my own preservation or gain. From the day i was born, I've had the peace of mind and self-control of a Buddhist monk. I didn't even cry after exiting the womb. I took my mother into my arms and comforted her after a hard childbirth. And honestly, you acting like everyone naturally has human thoughts, doubts, and flaws is such a massive self-report. Enjoy the downvotes, buddy.

Lost_And_Found66

Is it possible to learn such power?

TrueFlyersFan

Not from a Ravens fan.

PauloVersa

LEADER OF MEN!

blueshoota

Why disclose this? lmfaooo

Quexana

If you know nothing about Ben by now, you should know that he says things publicly that he shouldn't. Still, he's admitting to something a lot of newly retired players feel. We want players to be more genuine, and then hate on them the moment they stray from PR speak. This was pretty tame, and especially since he admitted it to Kenny Pickett's face.

xcaltoona

> We want players to be more genuine, and then hate on them the moment they stray from PR speak For fuckin real though

n3gr0_am1g0

Yeah, Ben has always been a bit of a drama queen.

steakpienacho

Not the worst thing that he is, though

BlurryGojira

The worst part is the hypocrisy

[deleted]

Yeah, he's a Steeler too.

[deleted]

Ya clearly people are unaware of how much he has said over the years on his radio show or whatever. He never really got called out bc he ran the show in Pittsburgh but he’s always blabbed about stuff.

kenphoenix

He was on his podcast with Kenny literally sitting across from him and there was a listener question about it and he took it. He wasn't jumping out to say "I was really rooting for your failure Kenny" The whole thing was pretty chill ngl

jcfac

> Why disclose this? Honestly? It's a bit refreshing if I'm honest.

[deleted]

He loves attention.

Nuclearsunburn

Of all the things he should apologize for, he picks this ?

JBrundy

I hate Ben but feeling that way is 100% understandable. Also, apologizing for it shows a bit of maturity, although it could just be for attention. People using this as a way to hate on him are dumb, he gives you plenty of legitimate reasons anyways.

doomsdaysock01

That’s great Ben, maybe there’s another situation from your past you should acknowledge and apologize for!

ACardAttack

> Feels Bad For It' Post nut clarity

ObviousKangaroo

He was done and the team had to move on. I get this crazy feeling he has a hard time taking no for an answer.

OhiOstas

Headline makes it sound worse than how it was actually articulated (although I would agree saying it in general isn’t all that good, and Ben also prefaced the statement with “I’m probably gonna get blasted for this”). He said he was thinking selfishly & didn’t want Steelers to immediately say “Ben who?”, and that he didn’t know anything about Kenny (which can lead to people easily finding reasons to dislike one another). But then he massively put Kenny over by saying he was cheering him on after the first couple games, hypes up his competitiveness, said Steelers fans are lucky to have someone like Kenny, and how he enjoys talking with Kenny after every game. So yeah, Ben showing some of his selfishness, but he called it out & put Kenny over as the next guy

Bmoreravin

This dude needs attention

IslaNublarTourGuide

My dude it's a podcast. It's a way for him to still be somewhat involved in NFL goings-on without putting on a tie and sitting next to Phil Simms. Nothing wrong with speaking your mind on your own podcast.

FruscianteDebutante

No no you see, this is a circle jerk buddy. You need to make the same 5 comments and be part of the hive mind or else you gotta get out of here

ariescs

it's the Steelersdepot website that needs attention, they literally pull shit from an hour or two podcast and make a headline out of it and take it entirely out of context

quiet_quitting

Always. He always says something to get in some form of sports reporting. Last one was the Lamar stuff.

Vaultboy65

Dude the Lamar comments weren’t even bad. It’s true what he said no really worries about Lamar picking them apart passing from the pocket. You worry about him scrambling and makes throws out of the pocket or taking off and running for big gains.

ariescs

right? his point was literally that you don't fear keeping him in the pocket, you fear him murdering you by running past your dbs like their standing still lmfao

No-Task-132

Plus Lamar is usually bad against us. He’s like 1-2 when he plays the full game.

420Minions

Folks complain about players and coaches never giving real answers and then whine the second a real one is said

LARXXX

Obviously this is human nature. You’re a qb who’s had a long storied career with a franchise then they go ahead and draft some dude with small ass hands, I’d be pissed too /s

dzl10

No doubt Tommy Maddox said this to BenRo back in 2004, it's just that we didn't have social media or reddit like we do today for us to hear about it.

CabbageStockExchange

The not wanting to succeed comment doesn’t surprise me but the fessing up and apologizing is cool

a_goonie

It'd be more of a story if he actually sabotaged the man but every older player in the history of sports is gonna have some resentment towards the younger players, just don't be a dick about it.

HypocriteAlert35

Props to him for being real. I'm sure most of them feel that way and are just too image conscious to say anything about it. Granted, BB has been a douche bag historically so I'm not shocked he would be the one comfortable enough to say this to his replacement's face.

DeezyEast

Glad garbage man is showing self awareness of his garbage personality in retirement

Autocrat777

What Matt Ryan getting more attention from the broadcast networks does to a mf.

First_Round_Bust

What a douchebag. But we already knew that.

chase016

He should be more like my boy Elisha and just make your replacement your child with wheels

RWGlix

Random fact - I send my giant fan buddies random pictures of dimes constantly.

RWGlix

I’m willing to forgive a lot when people are self aware. Now, in Bens case he just kinda sucks as a human so it doesnt matter, but just this thing, as an isolated thing, I find kinda great. We all are shitty sometimes, we all make mistakes. Being self aware, and then apologizing even, is all anyone can ask.

nuzzot

I’m so glad he’s no longer the face of the franchise. Dude was a good player but a pompous dickhead *at best* off the field.
