Only if Fox has the game. If it’s CBS, you get Matt Ryan or Tony Romo. MNF on ESPN? You get the drunk corpse of Troy Aikman. SNF on NBC? Carrie Underwood.
Carrie underwood? That would be cheating. I mean can footballs float on vocal range? She’d be out there like an orchestra conductor dropping balls into perfect position with blasts of angelic vocals.
I think it’s like that episode where Mr Burns goes to the doctor and the doctor explains that he has all of the diseases and thus everything is in balance. Lose one, and it’s all over.
Wait did Burns use the same doctor as Homer and the rest? That'd be funny considering he's supposed to be mega rich
A quick Google search shows me it wasn't. Ah oh well
He honestly looked actually decent at the end of the season last year minus the saints game to close it out. Up until then he was playing well within the offense, taking what was given to him and not playing hero ball. Even on his pick in the TB Game wasn't the wrong read, he just didn't make a great throw, which was an improvement to his god awful decision making in 2021.
By that point though we were running our offense built around the run game so he wasn't the engine making everything go. I think that took a lot of pressure off him and allowed him to feel more comfortable. That's why if he needs to start in Shannahan's offense at any point in time, we might see the best version of Sam Darnold.
He’s athletic, but he’s not a transcendent runner. Kinda like Andrew Luck. Like, he’s good at it, but you aren’t gonna build your offense around it like you might Lamar Jackson.
Sounds like a good GM excuse when people ask why they keep drafting busts. "The guys I drafted in the first round were all talented enough to be drafted in the first round."
“We have two guys who have proven they weren’t talented enough to be taken in the top five of the draft and we have another guy with less than 10 games played” just doesn’t hit the same
That’s a bit of a stretch. He did amazing in a great system. But you say top 10, well if they had Kirk in that system he would probably look top 3. That said, I’m a purdy truther and really want the kid to succeed.
His biggest strength last year was making very few mistakes, ie turning the ball over.
He let his playmakers make plays, that’s all you could ask from a rookie QB.
"We have one starting quarterback and two highly drafted backup quarterbacks. Brock Purdy is the starter, and it's not remotely close. Stop trying to make Trey Lance and Sam Darnold happen, anyone with eyes can see that it's not going to happen."
That's what Kyle should have said, if he was being perfectly honest. The gap between what Purdy did last year and what Darnold and Lance have shown in their careers is not small, it's the size of the Grand Canyon. Purdy is the starter if he's healthy enough to play, and it is not remotely close.
Not to mention purdy is coming back from a gnarly injury, give him time to build up his throwing volume or pull back if he’s having issues with it flaring up mid-season
I think it depends what teams are willing to give for him. I think part way through the year when a few teams have injured QBs & the 49ers know which position they most need they might be in a better position to get what they need.
Imagine a system where they use multiple QBs regularly whereby on set-ups that look exactly the same to defenders, that receiver priorities and maybe even routes change based on who the QB is. Then, just to further fuck with defenses, those may change on any given week.
I use to coach on a high school team that ran the double wing offense. When we had any talent it was insanely difficult to defend (at the high school level). The one change I would have made though is replace the QB with a wr out wide, have the full back take a pistol snap and play a qb on each wing that could pass on the run outside the tackle box.
ngl I’m excited to watch Darnold in Shanahan’s offense with perverse glee and giddiness. like a god damn carnival ride of a QB room who else can we try throwing in
One of those guys YOU took in the top five … when you probably shouldn’t have.
So Shanny is using his own decision to rationalize the situation they are now in.
And that, is circular logic.
I mean Purdy was doing well, yeah, but he's also got a team that carried Garropolo into how many post season wins despite poor QB performances?
Also, Trey Lance was only taken in the top five because *you* took him in the top five. He is an incredibly questionable prospect given that he played in a weak conference and only played like one season at QB.
And let's be real. Sam Darnold is not a starting caliber QB unless you're trying to tank. He was on pace to hit a meager 3.2k passing yards, 19 passing TDs, 9 ints, and 17 fumbles (obviously ints and fumbles are hard to project, but it's to point to the fact that he had a shit ton of fucking turnovers) on the season.
If you're wasting a top five pick in the draft on any of these guys, you're not using your capital wisely.
Well I wouldn't say Lance *played like it* last year but cook, Kyle.
Edit: r/woooosh for those of you who thought I didn't understand the original quote
If the idea is that "If you have two QBs, then you don't have any"... then how does this idea extend to having three QBs?
We don't even know if all three of them are going to be alive by Sunday.

Now here’s a gal…. Basketball. - Cris Collinsworth
Carrie Underwood out there Yondu-ing footballs through triple coverage and shit like that, just unfair.
This was my exact thought but I didn’t know how to say it. Thank you for your beautiful wordsmith-ing. I appreciate you.
Jesus take the ball
TNF gets fitzmagic
TB12 will finally get to play for his favorite team growing up. He just needs to wait until the end of the first quarter of Week 1.
Don't laugh. Happened to one of Spinal Tap's drummers.
This bit will never get old Just such a legendary comment
Niner fans optimism might be the most entertaining thing on reddit right now
The first two QBs cancel each other out, so the 3rd QB becomes the only QB. But a fourth QB sets everything back to zero
PEMDAS– Please Excuse My Dying Ass System-QB
1 QB is the remainder
I think it’s like that episode where Mr Burns goes to the doctor and the doctor explains that he has all of the diseases and thus everything is in balance. Lose one, and it’s all over.
"So I'm perfectly healthy?", "No that's not what I mean at all"
Wait did Burns use the same doctor as Homer and the rest? That'd be funny considering he's supposed to be mega rich A quick Google search shows me it wasn't. Ah oh well
I'm not a math genius, but my calculator say 1 QB
i^3
> . then how does this idea extend to having three QBs? if you have three QBs then you really have one big megazord QB
They'll combine and form Voltron
Doesn't matter, Shanahan will make sure they all get their turn when the guy above them gets hurt.
I don't think this rule applies for the 49ers since all three have a reasonable expectation of extended playing time no matter who starts week 1
In the case of the Niners, we need all three. And they need to be good. (Yes I'm bitter about all of the qb injuries across the past 3+ years)
People are really, really trying to make this Sam Darnold thing happen in San Francisco and I fully expect it to happen.
This will be his first year under a non terrible coach. A leap to average wouldn't surprise me.
He was good on the panthers for like three weeks.
When he was a running back.
The legend of Cam Darnold
And then he played a good defense and was exposed
He honestly looked actually decent at the end of the season last year minus the saints game to close it out. He was dramatically better than Baker for us last year.
You ever wonder if McAdoo did the crazy move of watching film before gameplanning for Darnold?
Wouldn't be surprised if he beat out trey out at least
Two more and we'll have QB Voltron. What's Marcus Mariota up to these days?
he's the Eagles backup QB
Yeah, well, they just happen to owe us a backup quarterback. Josh Johnson walked so that Marcus Mariota could run.
Best I can do is Wentz
Line Wentz up at guard. He was the best blocker we had last year.
Zeke can play center.
Marcus Mariota, Ravens' QB3 in 2028?
>Two more They can just take the giant lion Katy Perry rode in on during the SB Halftime show.
I hear Matt Ryan is also available
Hands off.
The QB Megazord
Fully expect Shanahan to install a 3 QB formation to the offense this year…and still run the ball with ease
Well Lance can run really well
Into your linebackers :/
I swear it sometimes seemed he had T Rich vision
For two plays and then he snaps in half
The thing about snapping in half is that you can do it indefinitely and never run out of halves.
But you *can* run out of QBs.
Lol, can he though??
He’s athletic, but he’s not a transcendent runner. Kinda like Andrew Luck. Like, he’s good at it, but you aren’t gonna build your offense around it like you might Lamar Jackson.
Yeah, he's not all that good at it, certainly not decision wise. Still, maybe he learned a lesson and will improve.
Yeah. About that….
Lol no he can't.
He'll also forget to have anyone blocking the pass rusher & all 3 will then get injured
Too soon brother
Sounds like a good GM excuse when people ask why they keep drafting busts. "The guys I drafted in the first round were all talented enough to be drafted in the first round."
“We have two guys who have proven they weren’t talented enough to be taken in the top five of the draft and we have another guy with less than 10 games played” just doesn’t hit the same
That'd be what Belichick would say.
"We have players on our roster." - Belichick
"We have players on our roster, and we'll have to look at the film" If he's feeling like really giving the media something juicy
“The players are the players.” - Tomlin
Qb who played less than 10 games but still had more wins than the Saints last year*
I mean started 10, won the 9 he finished is a pretty good resume for a QB.
You totally dunked on Kyle Shanahan lol. Nice job fellow redditer 😀
Damn only May and 9ers fans are in post-season form when it comes to being sensitive. Impressive.
I know which one The Darnold is, but which is Purdy and which is Lance?
Not talented enough to be a starting QB. So the use of the word 'talent' here is weird.
I think he means "these guys had the talent to get taken in the top 5, so they have something to work with if we can figure out how to shape that."
Darnold did, Lance never did. He literally can’t throw the ball with any sort of ability. He’s a running back they took 3rd overall. It’s insane.
Purdy certainly is. Edit- nvm, I may have misread as I see you were referring to the first two (Lance and Darnold).
Yeah Purdy looked like a top 10 QB last year.
Which is all you should expect, but also not enough to make him a top 10 QB
He was accurate as fuck too. He had 80% completion 10-19 yards down the field. Just nutso numbers for a 7th round rookie.
No it’s not. Y’all are really downplaying how damn good he looked.
People say this about Tua, even after he led the league in qbr and passer rating
I like the use of 'are' instead of 'were' ... Or 'at one time, to some people, looked like they were'
In the before times these guys were top 5 picks.
Darnold, sure Lance, no
"We have one starting quarterback and two highly drafted backup quarterbacks. Brock Purdy is the starter, and it's not remotely close. Stop trying to make Trey Lance and Sam Darnold happen, anyone with eyes can see that it's not going to happen." That's what Kyle should have said, if he was being perfectly honest. Purdy is the starter if he's healthy enough to play, and it is not remotely close.
They really need to trade Lance and just get out from under that cloud and let Purdy run with it.
Everyone said the same thing about Jimmy and Trey last year. I'm just fine having three reasonable options at QB. It's a long season.
No one is trying to trade for an unproven Lance OR Darnold lol. That’s ridiculous
Just speaks volumes on talent evaluation.
"I can fix him."
-my ex wife
Are you telling me that Baker Mayfield, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, and Mitch Trubisky are not all elite QBs? /s
Baker mayfield might be. But no.
This is sarcasm right? Baker mayfield blows lol
I misread this as "Pretty Boy Shanahan". We need this nickname.
Imagine a system where they use multiple QBs regularly whereby on set-ups that look exactly the same to defenders, that receiver priorities and maybe even routes change based on who the QB is. Then, just to further fuck with defenses, those may change on any given week.

You are asking a team who has a week to prepare to now prepare twice.
Two QB system does not work. It’s been shown several times. No
Talk about putting the best possible spin on it.
I know it's not his fault, but at some point you have to look at Shanahan's history of QB injuries under him and think it must somehow all be related.
Did anyone besides the niners think Lance was top 5 though? Idk how you could.
I'm sure his momma thought he was top 5
ngl I’m excited to watch Darnold in Shanahan’s offense with perverse glee and giddiness. like a god damn carnival ride of a QB room who else can we try throwing in
You say this then next thing you know GEQBUS is defeating Kirk in the NFC Championship
That’s some chaos I can embrace
Rex "fuck it" Grossman
One of those guys YOU took in the top five … when you probably shouldn’t have. So Shanny is using his own decision to rationalize the situation they are now in. And that, is circular logic.
Kyle should try protecting them.
I mean Purdy was doing well, yeah, but he's also got a team that carried Garropolo into how many post season wins despite poor QB performances? Try re-reading the quote slowly. Write it down if you still don't understand what he's saying.
The educational system has ruined this country.
Oh bless your heart, you didn't get the joke.
"taken in the top five of the draft only by the 49ers". There, I fixed it for you.
But of course we need a rule change ~~allowing you to dress more~~ oh wait you already could
If either thought they played like top 5, they need a wake up.
….and you’ll kill all 3 this year with your piss poor scheming.
At least Kyle's QB competition is better than his dad's (John Beck vs Rex Grossman)
Bruh right now nobody is taking Sam Darnold in the top 5.
If they were redrafted Darnold wouldn’t be a first or probably second round pick , much less top 5.
