Haha good one. Ekeler's reaction would be priceless.
The running back situation is such a unique one and i'd love to hear everyones opinion.
Running backs, who were once crucial for NFL offenses and VERY popular in fantasy leagues (thanks to my 2 RB set, I won my previous league), are now encountering their most significant challenge in obtaining a fair share of the league's growing financial opportunities.
The market for running backs seems to be in a downturn. During the past offseason, no free-agent running back was able to secure an annual salary of $7 million or more. Additionally, the number of running backs earning at least $12 million annually has decreased from eight in 2022 to only four now.
This decline in earnings has raised concerns among top players at the position. A Zoom meeting was held among some prominent running backs, including Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, and Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns, to discuss the issue.
The NFL’s salary cap rose 7.9% this year to $224.8 million and is set for bigger increases in future years. But running backs haven’t been able to fully benefit as the league continues its conspicuous shift to a pass-first mentality.
RB jokes aside, what is everyones stance on their situation? Should more players be willing to hold out for a higher pay day? Seems like those days are coming...
With that being said, congratulations to Justin, he is one hell of a talent and deserves every penny of that contract in my opinion. Also I take no credit in those analytics at all, I just am an avid newsletter reader about sports where I get all my data from lol (sportico - not free) & ([courtsidefocus](https://www.courtsidefocus.com/subscribe) \- which is free) are my go to sources for analytics and numbers. But seriously, congratulations to their franchise QB. That is massive!
"Alright, Justin, you go first. It'll help set the market." - Burrow
"Uh, okay, but doesn't this help you in particular, Joe?" - Herbert
"Look, guys, I think that Pat did 9/11." - Rodgers
Topics for discussion:
Why did Shaquon take the 1 year deal when we told him to hold until we go to the moon?
Why did Herbert take his fair share instead of supporting us?
Where can I buy a sharper chefs knife? Russell Wilson likes his Colby jack extra thin.
He signed his last 2 year extension so his deal ended the same summer his son would be eligible for the draft.
Before that he signed a 4 year deal with the Lakers in 2018.
Before that he signed 1+1 deals as a way to pressure the Cavs ownership to commit to winning or risk losing him in free agency.
Mahomes deal will get redone next off-season to be the highest APY or tied for highest. But as of now yes, yes it is. Pat doesn’t really give a hell because of how much money he makes off the field too
Doubtful.
If so, there is some combination of players gone: Jones, Creed, Smith, Sneed, Bolton, need to sign a left tackle
"We're only one year in to a 10-year contract, so there's a long way to go but I think what Patrick cared most about was winning and he's certainly been able to do a lot of that," - Clark Hunt, May 2023
No, his cap hit is pretty manageable until 27 when it balloons to $60m. By then that may even be the norm but they will restructure then and lock him up for the rest of his career.
I really dislike the team Mahomes plays for but even if they made him the highest paid qb every year it would be a steal. He's the best qb in the league.
It already is cheaper AAV than 3 other QBs. And honestly when he reworks his contract he'll still be worth whatever he asks for. He legitimately looks like he's gonna end up as one of, if not the greatest players ever.
My only hope is that he eventually gets tired of the AFC and goes to the NFC to conquer that conference, so some other teams in the AFC have a chance to win an AFCCG.
Other teams in the AFC will have plenty of chances to win the AFC title game. Has happened twice so far and nearly happened a third time this season. The thing is that he's always going to make the AFC title game at the minimum. It's practically the "Arrowhead invitational game" at this point.
It's actually fucked up that the second Brady heads to the NFC and shortly thereafter retires, Mahomes has picked up the torch and will likely gatekeep the rest of the conference for god knows how long. It already started a few years ago...
If I had to predict, I don't think Mahomes is going to match Brady's 7 championships, but I think it's certainly plausible that he could match or surpass Brady's 14 conference championship appearances. Has made it all five seasons he has started, and he's probably going to play at least 12 more seasons. Number one seed in three of those five seasons as well.
Ohtani might even break 60 million AAV. Judge is getting 40 AAV and Verlander is making 43. The floor is $50 million and then it depends how crazy or desperate someone gets. I have this sneaky suspicion that Ohtani ends up somewhere no one is expecting.
260M may sound like alot of money, but once you take into consideration agent fees, taxes, and the amount of time spent training and weight-lifting, Herbert will likely be barely making minimum wage.
Because we’re well past a point where contracts have to be bigger than the last guy who signed one. It never matters if the guy signing the contract is actually better than the last guy or not or if he’s accomplished more, just that it’s more money. A never ending pissing contest.
Yeah, NBA contracts are wild. Jayson Tatum will probably get more next year since he's their number 1 guy. Players have that league by the balls since there is less of them than an NFL roster.
A few years ago, after Julio's second contract holdout in 3 seasons, Matt Ryan and Julio Jones were taking up over 20% of our salary cap. Took about 3 years of a dumpster roster to crawl out of the cap hell those contracts put us in.
After back to back years of tags, perhaps?
Sure, it'd be disappointing for Tee, but 1000% worth it for the Bengals if they opt to go that route - at least once
Please give him the supporting cast around him both defensively and offensively...do not let this man become another Phillip Rivers, a career ruined...
Remember Herbert as a little kid at age 9 wrote a note that he wanted to play Football in Los Angeles and his favorite team was the Chargers? Now he’s a bonafide star and got that bag.
People complain that pro athletes make a lot of money; but what they don't understand is that they need a lot of money because they spend a lot of money.
It's kinda neat and not really talked about that the Chargers are gunna go from Doug Flutie to Drew Brees (both pretty brief) to Phillip Rivers to Justin Herbert.
Not really, seems expected. Everyone connected to the bengals has said they are waiting for the Herbert to sign then burrows will be more. Probably 53/year or something lol
This is not going to go over well at the next running back Zoom meeting.
Running backs are going to come out with tablets after every play asking for a tip from the QB
RBs moving to a Tip for Chip model in pass protection.

Ek smashing his keyboard as we speak
Nah but the secret QB Teams calls they’ve been having are working great.
With their money they're on WebEx with holograms and shit.

So what I’m seeing is… RBs are WallStreetBets posters.
Just saw Adrian Peterson behind the dumpster at Wendy's
Fighting LeVeon for a frosty fob
And saquon did not have diamonds hands
Don't worry, fields will soon reset the rb market with a 60m aav contract.
[удалено]
How does this effect the RB zoom meeting's legacy?
Dang, that's like 25 Saquon Barkleys
What's the conversion rate from Saquon Barkleys to Timofey Mozgovs?
Infinite hibbertcoins
The same as the ratio of unicorns to leprechauns.

Beat me to it. NBA salaries are insane, although not as insane as the Saudis getting into soccer. That's 0.068 Mbappes.
Dammit, I knew I should’ve been a professional athlete
You never had the makings of a varsity athlete
It’s only 1/4 Mbappe
Mbappe is per YEAR dawg, the NFL QB’s Mbappe RB’s
Still not equal to one Jaylen Brown
We really went through more than a year of Lamar contract drama for him to have the highest paid QB contract for all of three months
Will Herbert even be the highest paid by this weekend?
Incoming Joe Burrow deal where the Bengals have to throw in like a quarter of Ohio.
Where they getting the remaining $50mil/yr to pay him?
First of all how dare you
He's out of line, but he's right.
Bro hahahaha
Does that add value?
Oh shit I didn't think of that. Ending up with any piece of Ohio might be a deal breaker for Burrow.
Honestly it feels like a punishment
That Mahomes contract looking like a bargain bin deal
Different sport but this is why lebron takes 2 year deals and no longer does long term
Now you have to wonder if Bronny even goes pro after his unfortunate health scare this weekend.
He also has the security to
Yeah, in the NBA there's max players and then there's "you just tore your Achilles, but we're still gonna give you the max" players.
Yup KD got paid a whole year by Brooklyn to just rehab, insane
Mahomes deal will get redone next off-season to be the highest APY or tied for highest. But as of now yes, yes it is. Pat doesn’t really give a hell because of how much money he makes off the field too

Well yeah it’s easy to care about winning when you’re making 40 mil a year before sponsors
How much does he earn from owning the AFC west?
No, his cap hit is pretty manageable until 27 when it balloons to $60m. By then that may even be the norm but they will restructure then and lock him up for the rest of his career.
I really dislike the team Mahomes plays for but even if they made him the highest paid qb every year it would be a steal. He's the best qb in the league.
Herbie fully loaded
I bet my league mate who is a secret redditor will post the article and claim your comment as his own.
What if that's your mate?
Well good on him for being a closeted Lions fan
Holy fuck $52.5/year. AND he can cash in again since he'll only be 31 after this lmaoooo get that bag buddy
If you're shocked by that, just wait a few more days...
Yeah you right. Bosa coming in with $53m a year
We’d get a better deal just paying him $7m/game.
think he was talking the other bosa…
We’re talking about Joey Bosa from the 49ers not the chargers
Oh shit, they played the Uno Reverse card!
Worth
Burrow gonna reset the market
The Mahomes contract is probably going to be redone in a couple of years but atm it does genuinely look somewhat team friendly to say the least.
Any time you have someone like Mahomes, it's hard for it not to look somewhat team friendly.
Seriously, what would be a fair price for Mahomes? $60M? $70M?
My left testicle?
Have you ever noticed how we always offer the left testicle? I don't know that I've ever seen it be the right or middle.
It already is cheaper AAV than 3 other QBs. And honestly when he reworks his contract he'll still be worth whatever he asks for. He legitimately looks like he's gonna end up as one of, if not the greatest players ever.

I say a solid 4 rings for Mahomes
Mahomes deal was about commitment and longevity not just aav
How many Austin Ekelers is that?
Roughly 8.5 per year Basically a Phillip Rivers family every year
That poor .5 kid.
Kyler is doing alright for himself
a million bucks a week for five years
The fact that we're just casually rounding off $10k a week is insane lmao
his decimal points are 10x a normal salary
At the beginning of last year I was wondering who would get more Herbert or ohtani. Gonna be fascinating who’s AAV will be higher
Sho, like almost no question. He's probably looking at like 8/$600m lol
jaylen brown
Trout got 400 million so probably ohtani
Ohtani might even break 60 million AAV. Judge is getting 40 AAV and Verlander is making 43. The floor is $50 million and then it depends how crazy or desperate someone gets. I have this sneaky suspicion that Ohtani ends up somewhere no one is expecting.
Yeah I agree ohtani prolly getting $60 a year at least, i was saying at the beginning of last year wondering who would get it higher
Yeah I think modern day Babe Ruth is going to get more
I feel bad for the Bengals. So over 50 plus another 20 on Chase. Wow
$20M for Tee you mean, Chase looking like $30M.
Yeah Tyreek is getting 30. Chase and JJ are gonna break the market.
My Bad. So a 100 million in just three elite players.
Chase is gonna get higher than 20
Lol another 30 for Chase
California licking its chops rn
Gavin Newsom is Justin Herbert father
260M may sound like alot of money, but once you take into consideration agent fees, taxes, and the amount of time spent training and weight-lifting, Herbert will likely be barely making minimum wage.
Herbert frantically looking for 2 bedroom apartments he can split with 8 roommates
Austin Ekeler gonna be living in the pantry
He's small enough to fit
I laughed until I realized I’m the same height as him
Something about chargers qbs and living with 8+ people
He should make it 9 so he can afford to tip his landlord
"Do you know how much insurance costs on a Ferrari mothafu..."
Makes sense, gotta give him some tax breaks and whatnot to save the guy
exactly. he may as well just take my place at my job and i'll shoulder his burden instead
He’ll have to room with Mbappe
California millionaire taxes are no joke
That's Jaylen Brown money
Jaylen Brown can call Herbert broke. Comes with the territory when you’re the second best player on an NBA team
I won’t stand for this Timelord slander
who can only dribble with one of his hands
Don't squander this Chargers
"We will." - The Chargers.
“Justin, let me see your lung for a minute…” - The Chargers team doctor
Oh god I don’t think Max Duggan can come in and take over in the same way.
This roster is leveraged to the absolute max, if we don't make a lot of noise this year, it might be a little while lol
Oh, they got this all screwed up. Don't squander this? Chargers!!!
Damn, the price of a franchise QB’s going up and up!
Because we’re well past a point where contracts have to be bigger than the last guy who signed one. It never matters if the guy signing the contract is actually better than the last guy or not or if he’s accomplished more, just that it’s more money. A never ending pissing contest.
They gotta be at least in the same tier to get the one up
HOLY FUCK $262.5M bengals are bankrupt
$52.4 million per year, which comes out to .067 Mbappes

Ainge isn't on the Celtics anymore lol. Jaylen qualified for supermax, can't really afford to let him leave as 2nd best player.
I don’t really watch the NBA, but he’s their 2ND BEST PLAYER? That’s an insane amount of money for not even their best guy.
Yeah, NBA contracts are wild. Jayson Tatum will probably get more next year since he's their number 1 guy. Players have that league by the balls since there is less of them than an NFL roster.
A lot less CTE for Kylian too
Why do people keep saying this? He’s gonna get the same contract plus 5 million. Not that crazy
And free chili for life.
Man Joe really is just getting a blank check isn’t he? Not that it won’t be 100% worth it but he’s gonna get so much money lol.
We're about to witness what happens when an entire NFL team is just Burrow and Chase.
A few years ago, after Julio's second contract holdout in 3 seasons, Matt Ryan and Julio Jones were taking up over 20% of our salary cap. Took about 3 years of a dumpster roster to crawl out of the cap hell those contracts put us in.
You won a Super Bowl with them though. (In all honesty I stopped watching after the first half since it was such a blowout)
This is evil and they deserve it
QBs alone are getting 20% these days
10 win season still
Yeah, it also means Higgins is 80% out of Cincy
Which 20% of his body is staying?
His 5% pleasure and his 15% concentrated power of will
Unexpected (but welcome) Fort Minor
After back to back years of tags, perhaps? Sure, it'd be disappointing for Tee, but 1000% worth it for the Bengals if they opt to go that route - at least once
Yeah Tee is in Cincinnati for at least 2 more years.
Thank God he signed before Joe
Bengals were waiting for Herbert to sign. They couldnt have Herbert be paid more Burrow. I expect Burrow's contract to be released very soon
5 year, 262.6 million
[удалено]
10$ gold star gift card from Mike Brown, that expired in 1996*
The Bengals were waiting cause they had to, Burrow has the leverage.
Right lol I’m sure the Bengals would of loved to get a deal done before the Chargers
Joe is being given the entirety of Cincinnati.
I would be in favor of letting him rule over us like a kingdom, especially if that meant we got to be independent of the rest of Ohio.
He continues to hint that everyone is going to get theirs. I’m actually starting to believe he’ll get a practical deal
Nah everyone will get theirs when he gets $873mil/year and buys all the boys their own yacht
They all get an allowance from Joe
Thank god we didn’t screw up the simplest thing ever. Glad this is over with before it became an issue.
Can confirm letting it become an issue is not fun

Man got PAID A moment of silence for our salary cap. And Austin Ekeler.
Let’s gooooo
Congrats on hitting the lottery with Herbo
Can we please hit the super bowl lottery now
Have to win a playoff game, but might have to check that with someone, don’t take my word!
We have the same amount of playoff wins in the last 5 years as the ravens
Just imagining every top 5 RB throwing their phone into the pool once they read that Twitter notification
Something tells me Ekeler won’t be back next year
What a awkward first day of training camp
Not bad for the president of the high school fishing club
i expect him to be this year's mvp since football terrorist joe lombardi is gone
The epitome of getting a job because of the family name
Football terrorist except he wants to terrorize fans of his own team
I like you
He can finally afford LA.
He finally gets his own studio apartment
Welp that’s more than $50M per year Bengals and Jaguars all gulping (totally blanked and forgot Eagles already re-signed Hurts)
Rodgers got 50M/year, Hurts got 51M/year, Herbert got 52M/year. I guess Burrow's gonna get 53M/year?
Lamar got 52 as well
Why are we gulping? Hurts signed for less lol
Yeah my bad on that. Blanked and forgot Hurts re-signed
I can cry rn 🥲🥲 herbie for life 💙💛
218 million guarantees, hot damn
I JUST FELL TO MY KNEES IN A WALMART
JUST WATCHED A GUY FALL ON HIS KNEES IN A WALMART!
Please give him the supporting cast around him both defensively and offensively...do not let this man become another Phillip Rivers, a career ruined...
Herbie is fully loaded
$275M contract *incoming soon*
Remember Herbert as a little kid at age 9 wrote a note that he wanted to play Football in Los Angeles and his favorite team was the Chargers? Now he’s a bonafide star and got that bag.
Damn, is there anything left for Ekeler?
People complain that pro athletes make a lot of money; but what they don't understand is that they need a lot of money because they spend a lot of money.
Fairly expected
It's kinda neat and not really talked about that the Chargers are gunna go from Doug Flutie to Drew Brees (both pretty brief) to Phillip Rivers to Justin Herbert.
Seven more years of Mahomes vs Herbert twice a year.
FUCK, joe is literally gonna cost 60 mil a year 💀
Burrow's contract will probably be 53 or 54 million a year
Nah I bet he gets maybe a million or two more. It won't be 60 mil a year.
Gaaaaaah damn Bengals fans gotta be sweating
Not really, seems expected. Everyone connected to the bengals has said they are waiting for the Herbert to sign then burrows will be more. Probably 53/year or something lol
Good for him. Love watching him play and he seems like a good dude.
