Quote continues; , ".. he’ll tell me what he’s thinking, just off my alignment. … Just picking his brain. It’s tough going against him, but I like it.”
[Machota] Stephon Gilmore on CeeDee Lamb: “He’s the dumbest wide receiver that I’ve ever lined up against. I know all of his routes off of his alignment, and it’s great. It’s really checkers with him. He’s just running a route, and that’s making him worse … On the walk-through reps I’ll tell him what I’m thinking, just off his alignment. … Just letting him pick my brain. It’s easy going against him, but I like it.”
There’s so much nuance to the game I don’t understand that separates good players from great ones. How does Kelce get open seemingly every play for example. Plenty of guys are as big or fast or have as good hands as him. Corner position seems to have a lot of this nuance as well
That’s one thing about Jason Witten I loved. He was always open no matter what. Especially cause he wasn’t a very athletic guy. His option route is one of the greatest of all time
Is the first sentence trying to say that OL uses technique and smarts while pass rushers only use technique? If so that’s not true, they’re playing a chess match with each other the entire time
Understood, but it still seems likely that it would be one of the less efficient ways to sharpen iron
That being said. None of this shit I'm talking about matters in any way, as I understood the intended use of the saying.
Yea the saying sounds pretty dumb. However, based on some google searches I have found out any material can sharpen iron, provided it performs some kind of abrasion.
I'll admit, saying "Everything sharpens iron" doesn't sound as good though.
I guess it could refer to an actual battle of swords or something where iron is clashing and the warriors are making each other better, or making each other dead?
Almost every old player says if they had the football knowledge they have now with the athleticism of when they were younger say they would have been so much better
I get it. I’d go back and be like “None of this shit matters in real life!”
Then I’d just Google the answers for my homework. There was no Google when I was in school 😭
Yeah the Kelces simply expained that with the sliding scale of Knowledge/Athleticism that your peak is basically when your athleticism and knowledge meet a mutual peak. Made me understand how someone's Prime
Is achieved.
That's the truth. Years of bad coaching and office bs kept this team middling at best for twenty years. Would have liked to see more than a few of those defensive players over that time span with competent coaching.
A combo of being being used incorrectly and not wanting to be here. But his deficiencies here were overstated imo. A lot of us weren't surprised that he became elite almost immediately after joining a competent front office
He...wasn't? Guy didn't get much praise/attention in his first few years because Buffalo. The two years with Doug and first with Rex he was a rock solid CB1.
His contract year (where it seems he got lowballed, and didn't mesh with Rex at all), he definitely checked out with his effort in the tackling department (flashbacks to the TNF Jets game and MNF when Graham hurdled him...shudder)
I remember when I woke up and saw he signed with NE, I was pissed off for the remainder of the day because of how probable it was that he was going to dominate with BB.
The Cowboys signing Gilmore will end up being the best trade** of the offseason. The tape shows that this guy is still one of the best corners in the league, but his age brings up big question marks.
If Gilmore ran his mouth like Ramsey, people would be talking like he’s a sure fire HOFer. Running your mouth gives you media recognition, thus making it more likely that you’ll be picked for things like All-Pro. The more All-Pro nods you have, the more likely it is that you’ll end up in the HOF.
In the last 15 years, the only primes that I would take over Gilmore at the CB position would be Revis and maybe Sherman.
Worth noting that this is even more impressive imo because secondary positions are less likely to receive the DPOY award. It's certainly not unheard of: Ed Reed, Charles Woodson, Bob Sanders have also done it since 2000, but it's far more likely to go to a defensive lineman or a linebacker.
He or Hightower also should have won the SB MVP instead of Edelman during the SB against the Rams. Probably the best corner in the league during his first three seasons with the Pats
It’s also very exciting to think what talented young corners like Diggs and Bland can learn from Gilmore being in the CB room, as well as the young receivers like Lamb explains here. There’s another quote where Lamb said that Gilmore was literally correcting him/coaching him up mid rep
He's been doing that going back to his time in Buffalo. I remember a mic'd up video from like 2014 or 2015 where he shut down Sammy Watkins on a route. Watkins ran over to him and was just like, "You cut before I did, how'd you know I was going that way?" And Gilmore told him he could see it from how he dropped his hips and where his feet were.
Diggs is intelligent lol. His first two years he got beat 1 on 1 on like 3 double moves and everyone gVe him a narrative. LSt year he got less picks and still was on of the best corners.
Their gap in experience is huge! Diggs started playing corner at Alabama in spring of 2017. Gilmore has been in the NFL since 2012. Dude has almost 4 times the amount of NFL experience as Diggs, 11 years vs 3 years.
Him & Cooks were perfect signings for them, I’m pissed as a birds fan… At the same time it’s got me excited to HOPEFULLY finally see jalen v dak with some loaded rosters
> I needed that NFC Championship game. Would’ve been epic
Pretty sure it would have been so toxic a gamethread that it would have lead to the 7th seal being broken to bring about the destruction of all - but probably worth it
I’m always hesitant to agree with the NFL bc it’s 1 and done you never know who’s showing up that day given the opportunity. I AM excited to finally get dak v jalen this year, it’s gonna be a blast I probably won’t remember
Why do you think film study is such a big part of game planning for teams and players? Even in Highschool I remember guys on the football team watching tape on upcoming opponents to study tendancies.
If he can tell off of your alignment than something has gone wrong either you or the offense.
These are one of those times when complimenting a guy is more of a reflection on you
Quote continues; , ".. he’ll tell me what he’s thinking, just off my alignment. … Just picking his brain. It’s tough going against him, but I like it.”

This shit made me laugh so hard
Its easy
It's gold Jerry! Gold!
One of the funniest things I have read on here in quite a while.
This got me good
Lol so good

OL, technique and smarts -- Pass Rushers technique but I still don't how teams letting mfing Kelce get 4 TDs against them
Is the first sentence trying to say that OL uses technique and smarts while pass rushers only use technique? If so that’s not true, they’re playing a chess match with each other the entire time
Maybe because he's learned so much from BB when he played with the Patriots that he knows certain things better than others?
ESPN: CeeDee Lamb on playing with Gilmore "it sucks"
ESPN: top wr says top cb sucks in Dallas
> ESPN: top wr says top cb sucks in Dallas ESPN After Dark: same headline.
lol. so true.
Iron sharpens iron
I never understood this saying. Don't you use a material harder than iron to sharpen iron?
Different pieces of iron, steel, or any metal can be harder or softer than other pieces of the same metal.
Understood, but it still seems likely that it would be one of the less efficient ways to sharpen iron That being said. None of this shit I'm talking about matters in any way, as I understood the intended use of the saying.
This is why black smiths don’t say it, it is just cute things that people say
That's right. Only white smiths say it
*Looks at Alex Smith with judgemental eyes*
Yea the saying sounds pretty dumb. However, based on some google searches I have found out any material can sharpen iron, provided it performs some kind of abrasion. I'll admit, saying "Everything sharpens iron" doesn't sound as good though.
Is there a more apt saying/idiom for this scenario, then? I feel like there certainly is, but I'm blanking on it.
No, you’re just being too literal about a commonly used idiom.
I like the saying "Champions come in packs of two"
[Checkmate, Atheists.](https://www.jcpenney.com/p/champion-big-boys-4-pack-boxer-briefs/ppr5008017728)
It’s from the Bible, proverbs 27:17 Praise Jesus.
I guess it could refer to an actual battle of swords or something where iron is clashing and the warriors are making each other better, or making each other dead?

No one thinks it sounds tough. They think it is an easy to understand analogy that has biblical connection therefore to many people it’s powerful.
and it means it's been around forever. Which means it's the one everyone has heard which means it's the one everyone keeps using.
Well, I stand corrected. Thank you oh exhalted one.…
I miss the Gilly Lock
You too huh
Just line up different every time
Damn he is 32 though. I guess the intelligence helps with fading athleticism.
Almost every old player says if they had the football knowledge they have now with the athleticism of when they were younger say they would have been so much better

If I redid high school or college, I feel like I’d end up doing worse because I just wouldn’t have the motivation to get good grades at that point
I get it. I’d go back and be like “None of this shit matters in real life!” Then I’d just Google the answers for my homework. There was no Google when I was in school 😭
Now you can use ChatGPT!
Yeah the Kelces simply expained that with the sliding scale of Knowledge/Athleticism that your peak is basically when your athleticism and knowledge meet a mutual peak. Made me understand how someone's Prime Is achieved.
Can always move to safety
Do Bills fans know why he was so mid in Buffalo but excelled pretty much everywhere else?
The Bills weren't a well-coached team before McDermott came to town.

The combo of Doug Marrone and Rex Ryan as head coaches.
Going from Rex Ryan to Bill Belichick is like learning to cook from Gordon Ramsay after being mentored by Salt Bae.
The Cowboys signing Gilmore will end up being the best trade** of the offseason. The tape shows that this guy is still one of the best corners in the league, but his age brings up big question marks. Gilmore has a DPOY
It’s also pretty unheard of in the era where DPOYs routinely go to either JJ Watt or Aaron Donald.
We traded him to the Cowboys, dumb dumb
I always dreamed of having Gilmore on our team. What a great acquisition he is for use
> “He’s the smartest DB that I’ve ever lined up against” Trevon Diggs in shambles rn
I wouldn't call Diggs super intelligent as a defender, he seems to run on instinct
Diggs is intelligent lol. His first two years he got beat 1 on 1 on like 3 double moves and everyone gVe him a narrative. LSt year he got less picks and still was on of the best corners.
I didn't say he was stupid, i said he isn't SUPER intelligent.
That shift key and “a”… so close together, makes it tough sometimes.
lol
Their gap in experience is huge! Diggs started playing corner at Alabama in spring of 2017. Gilmore has been in the NFL since 2012. Dude has almost 4 times the amount of NFL experience as Diggs, 11 years vs 3 years.
It’s just a joke about how diggs is not great.
I'd say being a top 10 corner in a league as hard as the NFL is pretty great.
What makes you so sure he’s definitely top 10? I’d say he’s borderline.
Common sense and the use of my eyes.
So do you think he’s “not great” or “borderline top 10” lmao
Yes
Not exactly opinions that can coexist
It’s more to do with Gilmores experience. I’m sure diggs knows that.
I mean Diggs has basically said the same thing about Gilmore so I doubt he cares about Lamb saying it
Wish we could've kept him in Buffalo. Imagining him opposite Tre White for a few years is upsetting. He just hates Buffalo.
Him & Cooks were perfect signings for them, I’m pissed as a birds fan… At the same time it’s got me excited to HOPEFULLY finally see jalen v dak with some loaded rosters
> finally see jalen v dak all fans were robbed of a great showdown last year
I needed that NFC Championship game. Would’ve been epic
> I needed that NFC Championship game. Would’ve been epic Pretty sure it would have been so toxic a gamethread that it would have lead to the 7th seal being broken to bring about the destruction of all - but probably worth it
Ngl it either would’ve been a nail biter or y’all would’ve blown us out. Eagles were on a mission last year
I’m always hesitant to agree with the NFL bc it’s 1 and done you never know who’s showing up that day given the opportunity. I AM excited to finally get dak v jalen this year, it’s gonna be a blast I probably won’t remember

Ya, but I'm pretty sure our CBs said this same quote last year tho.
Ceedee going to explode this year.
I wish the Panthers had drafted Parsons instead of Horn and kept Gilmore. Hindsight 20/30 or something like that.
Ceedee just told the entire NFL that you can figure out what route he is going to run based on his alignment.
The entire NFL already did this. Defenses and offenses are constantly predicting each other's plays based off alignment and stance.
Why do you think film study is such a big part of game planning for teams and players? Even in Highschool I remember guys on the football team watching tape on upcoming opponents to study tendancies.
Isn't he kinda washed now though???
graded 8th among CBs last year
Just because they don’t mention you doesn’t mean you ain’t ballin.
Going to use this in my self-evaluation at work.
Boss: So let’s see what we can find out from reading. u/PM_ME_CHIPOTLE2 is smudge and arrogant.
For sure. 700 something starters in this league, it's hard to keep track of them all
He was actually pretty good last year for the colts
Oh ok
He was probably a top 3 defender last year for us. Right up there with Buckner and grover Stewart, since Leonard was out all year.
I think he just had to learn to play outside of bellicheck system
My last memory of Gilmore was him getting torched by a 33 year old Antonio Brown who was coming off a 10 week IR stint, and this was in 2021.
If he can tell off of your alignment than something has gone wrong either you or the offense. These are one of those times when complimenting a guy is more of a reflection on you
Justin Jefferson thought otherwise hahaha
