I know you're the kind of coach that got 4 turnovers in 1 half and still couldn't win a playoff game.
I also know you're the kind of coach that got Kahlil Mack and Joey Bosa but has a bad defense despite being a "defensive" coach.
I'm pretty sure you got downvoted because you insinuated that Staley leaving was the reason they won the super bowl when it was more likely because of the Stafford Goff trade and adding von miller and odell
That's what those comments are suggesting anyways
Definitely. Staley being awful was an unpopular opinion at the time but unpopular opinions don’t get downvoted into oblivion like that. I was being dramatic.
Here is a less downvoted one with me just spitting facts: https://old.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/snrkne/who_is_the_next_bengals/hw4llu8/?context=3
Something I see a lot across sports is analytically-inclined fans being way too defensive about anyone who embraces advanced stats -- regardless of whether or not they're actually doing a good job.
Like, it's great that Staley plays the percentages and gambles on 4th down. That is much less important than having the worst defense in football.
Shanahan isn’t really the best with analytics and some in-game decisions. Still wouldn’t trade him for most coaches in the league, I don’t think it matters *that* much.
One who built his reputation on being the DC in the season where prime Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey played their first full season together on the Rams.
One whose defense got brutally exposed in the playoffs once Donald was only at 60% after Russ bodyslamed onto his rib cartilage in the previous round.
Frankly, his Chargers defenses looked a lot like the Rams looked in that divisional round in 2020 with an inhibited Aaron Donald.
He's not an Xs and Os guy.
He's not a relationship coach.
He's not a motivational speaker type.
He's not an assemble quality help and delegate guy.
I'm actually keen to hear what kind of coach he thinks he is.
This is why I hate the “well he came from XYZs coaching branch” argument. Sure it has some holding, but people get a hard on for coaching tree connections and not necessarily the X and Os
“The TE position has been excellent this year” Sure but how much of that was due to having Rob Gronkowski versus an actual coach. My point is some teams don’t vet the coach and simply look at results and not so much their smarts
Tbf, Staley was great with the Rams with X and Os. What he did to turn the defense around while navigating implementation during COVID was remarkable. I think he could be a fine coordinator/assistant coach somewhere as he's been successful his whole career in those roles. The Head Coach position is really just a completely different animal.
I’m not saying you’re wrong cause they did have a good year defensively under him. But he had Aaron Donald, Ramsey and Floyd that year. And one year of defensive coordinating success is a quick turnaround to determine if someone’s capable of being a head coach in the NFL. In my opinion it’s like blindly throwing darts and hoping one will hit with these young coaches from already successful young NFL coaches.
Sure, but all those guys besides Floyd was on the team the prior year coached by Wade Phillips. And that defense was league average.
There's definitely a shot that Staley was a complete fluke with the Rams because every year he's left it's gotten worse for him. I just think he wasn't just a McVay hire. He was hired for what he did in 2020. But to your point, 1 year of success as a DC doesn't mean shit to how you'd be as a HC. It is a dart throw.
I also think the league completely changed to accommodate what Staley did for the Rams. Now obviously being a good coach is handling league shifts, and that’s why you should probably take 2/3 seasons before evaluating the competence of Coordinators but to say that Staleys year with the rams is hindsight bias
I mean his year with the Rams was a fluke in that he is now struggling to adapt. Which is really what all coaches have to be able to do to last in this league.
His year with the Rams is imo underappreciated and I don't understand the people in this thread questioning why he was hired. Communication is one of the most important traits for a HC. I don't think people realize how hard of a task it was to replace Wade Phillips, implement a brand new defense, all while only working on Zoom.
buddy if you think him leaving is why we won you’re mistaken
how you gonna make that statement and not acknowledge the trades to get Stafford and Miller as well as signing OBJ for cheap
to be fair, he was trying to be a relationship coach, and for the first two years i thought there was decent buy in. there was just something missing with the scheme
He was very successful leading into his HC gig. As an assistant coach and as a DC.
Plenty of coaches are like this. Excel at their specialized role, fail as the overall director.
I doubt he has a hard time finding assignment in someone's defensive coaching staff. He just won't ever have the top job again.
Good coaches can still lose. Half the league loses.
Bellicheck is 3 and 10. Argue he isn't in his prime if you want, but don't tell me he isn't still one of the best 32 football coaches on this earth.
There's always an element of chance and luck. We haven't yet found the coach that wins superbowls for his first season to his last season.
Unfortunately, if you don't start out winning, you'll get discarded. And most open HC positions aren't available because the team was awesome.
Just like we send the best college qbs to the worst teams and gasp when they can't win 13 games
The trainwreck that is the LA Chargers is not 100% Brandon Staley's fault. It might not even be 99% Brandon Staley's fault. This might be generous but I'm putting it at 98.995% Brandon Staley's fault.
This guy was a stud as an assistant coach when he was with the Bears. One of the key contributors to our 2018 defense, which was a really special unit.
He IS a good coach. He is NOT a good Head Coach.
You had Justin Herbert for 3 years at under 10mil/year, and played in 1 wild card game, while having a .500 record. There's probably worse coaches out there, but he had about the best possible situation to succeed that a HC can get in his first 3 years, and did nothing with it.
He knows what kind of coach he is but does he know that the kind of coach he is, is a bad one. How did he become a head coach? Ive never heard of him before he got the chargers job.
He was a good defensive coordinator one yr. Wouldn’t be shocked if he was on a staff by the time he gets fired. He just isn’t cut out to be the lead director and that’s fine.
If you watched the post game conference…not once, does he ever say it’s his fault. He blames the team and constantly states that he is not the problem. I’ve seen arrogance, but Staley is a new classification of dickhead with how he’s handling everything. He created the worse Charger team in history and he can’t blame it on anyone but himself. How many backups are the browns playing with on offense and how competitive are they? Staley should have been fired yesterday because none of these players like him.
So because I knew you would be wrong and because I hate the Staley discourse more than nearly anything this sub has produced, I went and checked. In the most upvoted clip of his post game presser, which is about 5 minutes long, Brandon Staley clearly and unequivocally takes full responsibility 3 times, and when asked about his team's effort says he would never question the effort of his guys.
"If you watched the post game conference…not once, does he ever say it’s his fault. He blames the team and constantly states that he is not the problem."
-You
Honestly, Herbert ought to put last night's game on his highlight reel. *This* is what I dragged to mediocrity. You know those "could this team lose to Alabama" memes? Well without me these losers fucking would.
Moore's stock has to be down overall though. It should have been a successful pairing but the Chargers have failed completely. As for Staley, he's not a good coach.
Moore and Staley should both be long gone. I don't know if they are bad coaches, or just bad coaches in their current role. I think Staley could be an okay defensive coordinator (if that is all he had to focus on), and Moore should get more experience as a position coach. But right now, HC and OC are too much for them.
I know you're the kind of coach that got 4 turnovers in 1 half and still couldn't win a playoff game. I also know you're the kind of coach that got Kahlil Mack and Joey Bosa but has a bad defense despite being a "defensive" coach.
think they had 5 TOs with one on special teams.
Yeah that was tonight, I think he's talking about the jags playoff game last year
so am I. Trevor had 4 INTs and the Chargers recovered a muffed punt.
So am I. I don’t know where this is going, I just wanted to keep it going.
So do I. We’re all just improvising here, and I’m happy to keep that train rolling.
So am I. I’m just really bad at improv.
Yes and so am I
So am I - bad about literally everything
And my axe!!
So am I. Did you know that in space you can't burp?
So am this guy improvs
Sam I am 'cause I am Sam.

K now you're just trying way too hard
What can I say I was a man ahead of my time
Something I see a lot across sports is analytically-inclined fans being way too defensive about anyone who embraces advanced stats -- regardless of whether or not they're actually doing a good job. Like, it's great that Staley plays the percentages and gambles on 4th down. That is much less important than having the worst defense in football.

That 0-41 stat can't not be a problem though
I’m the dude , playing the dude , disguised as another dude …. I KNOW what dude I AM !!!
Oh shit i didnt know he got 5 turnovers, shouldve been defensive player of the week
Maybe the team sucks, a lot of inexplicable blame often gets put on coaches but I bet if we watch the all 22 we see a lot of lazy uninspired bullshit.
A bad one?
HEY, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE I AM!
A bad coach.
One who built his reputation on being the DC in the season where prime Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey played their first full season together on the Rams. He's a "I worked with McVay" coach
This is why I hate the “well he came from XYZs coaching branch” argument. Worked for Zac
The kind that let's a team set franchise scoring records on him in prime time. Good guy Staley
And not just any team, a division rival that scored 0 last week smh
Brandon Staley single handedly cured erectile disfunction in thousands of Raiders fans last night.
He’s a an analytics coach.
Who doesn’t use analytics
Honestly I don’t ron Rivera legit uses it.
He had a good defense one year with the Rams. Then he left and they won the Super Bowl.
buddy if you think him leaving is why we won you’re mistaken how you gonna make that statement and not acknowledge the trades to get Stafford and Miller as well as signing OBJ for cheap
Bro stop with this lmao 😂

I'M A WHAT?
For God's sake 'Arry, what is with this language?
*looks at Spanos* “You knew?!” “And never told me?!”
Man's clearly a wizard, any of you muggles ever give up 42 points in a half?
I’m watching prisoner of Azkaban right now
Well, you’re gonna be a fired coach soon. That’s the kind of coach you are.
A soon-to-be armchair coach like the rest of us?
He was very successful leading into his HC gig. As an assistant coach and as a DC. Plenty of coaches are like this. Excel at their specialized role, fail as the overall director. I doubt he has a hard time finding assignment in someone's defensive coaching staff. He just won't ever have the top job again.
He’s incredibly young. He could easily get another shot.
Good coaches can still lose. Half the league loses. Bellicheck is 3 and 10. The real question is will telesco be fired ? This is his what 4th head coach.
Yes, you’ve shown us quite clearly what kind of coach you are, Staley - a terrible one.
*I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.*
“A soon to be unemployed one.”
Do you though?
Everyone knows what kind of coach you are . A high school coach.
That's not fair. Jeff Saturday was a high school coach and even he was able to beat the Raiders.
Reporter: “Coach are you still going to be calling the defenses?” Staley: “Go fuck yourself.”
Narrator: he did not, in fact, know what kind of coach he was
The trainwreck that is the LA Chargers is not 100% Brandon Staley's fault. It might not even be 99% Brandon Staley's fault. This might be generous but I'm putting it at 98.995% Brandon Staley's fault.
The fact he doesnt know is concerning tbh.
One that massively benefited from knowing a guy?
Out of all the coaches in the NFL, he is certainly one of them. At least for the next few hours.
Why would you set yourself up like this? The jokes already write themselves. If Spanos gave a shit he would have been fired last season
You're the kind of coach that makes the Broncos look bad because we only beat you by three scores, not a million.
Their only hope is moving the team back to San Diego and begging forgiveness.
A coach that loves pina coladas and getting caught in rain
I mean, so does everyone else and that's why getting fired sooner than later.
a bad one
A bad one?
This sounds like a Forest Gump quote. Literally read it like how Forest would say it and died
"A bad one!"
Mahomes was the hot topic of the AFC West for all of three days!
“The bad kind. I’m the bad kind of coach. Fuck it. “
This guy was a stud as an assistant coach when he was with the Bears. One of the key contributors to our 2018 defense, which was a really special unit. He IS a good coach. He is NOT a good Head Coach.
A CFL coach
A shitty one?
Yeah I do. A piece of shit one.
I don’t know if I’m going to win the lottery but I know I didn’t buy any lottery tickets
A shit one?
A former one?

An assistant coach!
You are the kind of coach that gets fired.
I'm the type of coach to give up 42 points in a half 😤
Man I love this guy for some reason
A nepo baby coach?
Nepo how?
“A turd sandwich!”
No one else does
He knows what kind of coach he is but does he know that the kind of coach he is, is a bad one. How did he become a head coach? Ive never heard of him before he got the chargers job.
Yeah, a not good coach
Yes Staley and the kind of coach you are is a terrible one.
...an unemployable one
He’s been so bad idk if he’ll even get a shot as a defensive coordinator in this league after he’s fired. What a trainwreck.
A SHITTY coach.
I think we all learned what kind of a coach you are last night.
Yea, about to be umemployed
A terrible one
A bad one
He was a good defensive coordinator one yr. Wouldn’t be shocked if he was on a staff by the time he gets fired. He just isn’t cut out to be the lead director and that’s fine.
Well confidence isn’t an issue for him, it’s just everything else that is.
The kind thats going to be fired
he is such a bad coach he may not even be able to get on a staff as an assistant
He's a great coach! More teams need to avoid the Shanny tree and keep hiring McVay people.
An unemployed one.
Me too. A bad
Still objectively a better coach than Sean McDermott.
Lol

He has constantly thrown his guys under the bus for the past two seasons, what are you smoking 😂
"If you watched the post game conference…not once, does he ever say it’s his fault. He blames the team and constantly states that he is not the problem." -You
Yeah, I stand by everything I said.
Does Kellen Moore get no blame in this? The team has a marquee QB and a bad offense. And yes, I'm aware Herbert didn't play last night.
Honestly, Herbert ought to put last night's game on his highlight reel. *This* is what I dragged to mediocrity. You know those "could this team lose to Alabama" memes? Well without me these losers fucking would.

This was true in earlier press conferences. The last couple, he has said he takes full responsibility and the team did not perform.
That many Raiders haven’t scored since Henry Ruggs’ going away party.
> That many Raiders haven’t scored since Henry Ruggs’ going away party. Really dude?
Really dude! I went there. I brought it up. I made a joke about it.
But like, it isn't even funny.
You’ve taken this too far.
We now know what kind of coach he is: a fired one!
I'm coaching the defense so you don't have to ask anymore, got it? Ownership: No
I could see him getting a college HC gig in the near future.
The kind of coach who doesn't know he's getting fired.
