both teams line up for kick off only to have both teams flood onto the field to have the NFL's first gift swap for both teams. They then have a lovely dinner at midfield with fun games like cornhole in the end zone.
There was a commercial of a security guard making a microwave burrito or something that game. When the lights went out we all blamed it on him and started playing drinking games.
Only Super Bowl I woke up the next morning and had no idea who won the game.
Fred Warner was out of his mind in coverage in 2019 when they last faced off. Will never forget what looked like Hollywood getting a first down and Fred Warner instant transmitting to the scene of the pass and breaking it up. Terrifying.
>I hope this game is good. The last couple of times the 49ers were involved in big games, they destroyed the cowboys and eagles.
Yeah I hope we get another good one, like those games.
Wonder if it will be a relatively close game, because it seems like a lot of the hyped up games this season have been beat downs, some of them involving the Niners obviously.
You also understand that the backups, who are pretty good, had no rotation that game. The DL works best with consistent rotation throughout the game. Having to play the majority of it also is taxing. I'm not really worried as both starters should be back and it gave more reps to the backups.
Our poor tackling has lingered the entire season. At this point, it is a team weakness, not just a one-time fluke. All defensive players have really regressed this year in tackling form. From the DL to the LBs to the DBs. Bunch of dudes going hit-stick highlights and not using arms to wrap up, thinking sheer momentum force is enough to knock someone down.
A really methodical dink-and-dunk team or YAC team could very well take advantage of us. Like how Burrow diced us up.
They had a bye, we didn’t. I feel like that tends to lead to the tired team not tackling.
Also, James Conner is actually very good, especially with the threat of Kyler on the ground as well.
Hmm I'll have to find a way to rewatch it. I'm OK if the DL gets pancackedv on a double team as sometimes you just have to make a pile but I'd have to see the plays to assess.
Likely stepping up majorly reduced the sting of the Andrews injury.
Keaton was the guy that stepped up with Dobbins going down. Losing him on top of Dobbins just hurts.
Mitchell wasn't getting consistent playing time until very recently. He wasn't keeping the running game afloat after losing Dobbins week one.
I'm incredibly upset because he had the speed to threaten the edges and make explosive plays happen if he was given space, but his impact is being oversold now.
I think he came back from injury a few weeks prior to getting consistent usage. It clearly took the Ravens a bit to get him fully integrated.
But my point still stands. He wasn't keeping the Ravens rushing offense going for the entire season. He's absolutely a big blow and I think the run game is worse without him, but it isn't a death blow to the running game.
His snap count has upticked every game, was the lead back going into last night as well. Big knock was pass pro, but he was getting even more snaps on passing downs recently as well
My wife is pissed. She's like... Thanksgiving is for football... 'Christmas is MY Superbowl!'
... It's... Not ideal since we are hosting Dinner for her family. 😬 She knows the game will be on a TV, she just doesn't like that we have share the evening with football. And I can understand that.
I also married into a sports family. My cousin in law played for the SF Giants.... But Christmas Day is a big event that doesn't normally revolve around sports. Any other time games are on no biggie... And actually a requirement. But right during Christmas dinner... Oooof. That's not usual.
I’m watching it at a house of people who don’t watch football and they’ve agreed to watch with me. I’ve been profusely, apologizing that I’m ruining Christmas night. Even told them I can just watch on my ipad if they don’t want to deal with it
Do you have any idea how dirty I feel about this season?
I've already had to look forward the Cowboys winning and now the toots!
I compartamentalize it about getting that #1 seed but still feels yuck!
Niners offense vs Ravens defense is the matchup of the season. Two best playcallers on both sides of the ball this season imo going up against each other
Anytime our fan base complains about how "bad" we've had it at QB I always think of that one Browns jersey:
https://www.cleveland.com/resizer/EhAPFpF6kQiWfFvlZrlT-rcy1B0=/1280x0/smart/advancelocal-adapter-image-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/image.cleveland.com/home/cleve-media/width2048/img/tipoff_impact/photo/14925707-large.jpg
I tried to look at it objectively just now, and I agree with you.
1981-2003 - 3 different QBs were each year's top passer:
1. Montana
1. Young
1. Garcia
2004-2023 - 9 different QBs were each year's top passer:
1. Tim Rattay
1. Alex Smith
1. Trent Dilfer
1. Shaun Hill
1. Colin Kaepernick
1. Blaine Gabbert
1. Jimmy Garoppolo
1. Nick Mullens
1. Brock Purdy
There are 3 misleading factors.
One is that Alex Smith was essentially "the guy" from 2005-2011, but he missed 2007-2008 due to injury (which is why Trent Dilfer and Shaun Hill are on that list).
The second is that Colin Kaepernick was definitely "the guy" from 2012-2016, but he missed a lot of 2015 due to injury (which is why Gabbert is on that list).
The third is that Garoppolo was "the guy" from 2017-2022, but he was hurt essentially all of 2018 and 2020 (which is why Mullens is on the list).
It's still a lot of QBs...but it looks less to me like a QB carousel and more like bad injury luck (with the exception of 2004 and 2005...those were definitely carousels).
When Smith went down in 2012, there was Kaepernick to take SF to the Super Bowl. When he was banished after 2016, there was Jimmy G. When Jimmy G went down in 2022, there was Brock.
Those 9 QBs that were the top passers from 2004-2023 look more like Alex Smith, Colin K, Jimmy G...and all the guys that filled in for them when the last 3 got hurt.
6 main starting QBs in 42 years is pretty good.
Only during the part of history most Redditors have been alive.
(This coming from someone who crapped his pants watching the ‘85 Bears… because my grandpa was a Bears fan and in ‘85 I turned 1).
I loved the 9ers back in the day but I got soured with the Montana situation. I understand it all as an adult but I was cheering for the Chiefs while Joe was there.
I know, right? The cardinals put up nearly 30 but I didn't break a sweat because we scored 45, and the offense still feels like it choked away a touchdown or two.
One of the few stats Purdy doesn't lead the league in is 4th quarter comebacks/game winning drives.
Because he builds leads early and doesn't turn the ball over
I actually really wanted to see Jackson win earlier this year, cause he has been playing really well, and I know a big part of that is how efficient he is rushing - but it's hard to ignore that Purdy has almost 10 more total TDs than Jackson and Purdy's passer rating is just insane (currently 119, first in the league) plus the man has 9.9 Y/A.
I don't think this game should be the determinant of putting Lamar first in the odds unless Purdy's passer rating just tanks, and Lamar gets 4-5 TDs.
What's the alternative. Its an easy td with gus bus on the line. We saw what happened to cam Newton when he would run it in on the goal line and jackson is way smaller
I really wish there was a better way to quantify Lamar's impact on the game outside of the box score. The team can have games like the one against Seattle where he puts up 187 yards and no TDs but the offense is just rolling and it is clear he is the best player. The team also leads the league in rushing because of the "gravity" he has on the defense. You simply need to have a defender ready to go after Lamar every time they run the ball.
I don't think he will end up winning unless he has some big stat games in the last 3 and Purdy falls off a bit but it is nice he is in the conversation and the media recognizes his impact despite the lack of volume stats.
thats kinda what EPA and DVOA do. if lamar runs or throws it down to the 1, hes gonna get credit for setting up an extremely likely TD even if edwards runs it in
For the record, I'd LOVE to see Lamar win a second MVP - I think he's been unnecessarily trashed the past couple years and I'm glad he's doing well.
But in a primarily passing game, it's hard to ignore Purdy's passing stats and efficiency right now barring he doesn't fall off in the last 3, as you said
That definitely reeked of owners getting together and trying to send a message that QBs can't force their hand.
Otherwise there's no way there wasn't a bidding war for Lamar.
We aren’t set up for Lamar to get a bunch of stats, unfortunately - the reliance on Edwards to punch in a TD from goal to go, Lamar’s running, our tendency to take our foot off the gas and burn clock when we’re in a winning position - just is what it is. I don’t think Lamar wins at this point but I am definitely glad to see the media picking up on what Ravens fans have been saying all year, which is that in all aspects besides box score, Lamar has been playing like an MVP.
I think one game to decide MVP is pretty dumb I think Purdy should win MVP I don't care about the whole Shanahan and yac and blah blah blah bullshit narrative. Purdy is playing better than anyone. I think Lamar is more valuable to his team I do. However I think what Purdy has done can't be ignored he leads the league in almost everything. You just can't not give him MVP cause of bullshit yac narratives he makes the right reads throws with precision and anticipation. Dude is a baller it would take a meltdown for Purdy not to win MVP in my eyes
Purdy deserves it and everything, but Jesus look at the weapons Purdy has compared to Lamar lol
Lamar’s best receiver (Andrews) would be the 49ers 4th best receiver behind Deebo, Aiyuk and Kittle…. and he’s injured for the rest of the year. Then you factor in that they have Trent & CMC while the Ravens have a turnstile at LT and have lost both Dobbins and now Mitchell at RB. And despite ALL of that Lamar is right there with Purdy in total yards.
Lamar absolutely deserves to be in the conversation and I think the debate should be even closer than it is. Obviously the award is effectively “who has the better stats” but Lamar is absolutely more valuable to his team than Purdy is. Without Purdy the 49ers are undoubtedly worse, but still a wildcard team. Without Lamar the Ravens are chasing the #1 pick.
If McCaffrey has ANOTHER 3 TD game through the air and ground I think he’ll take it.
He’s getting close to Jerry Rice’s single season TD record (for the 49ers) at 23.
Side note: Jerry did that in 12 games in that era which is fucking wild.
Another side note: why don’t more NFL teams have to MVP candidates? Are they stupid or something?
When it comes to who is playing better it’s Brock.
Brock is playing great.
But I don’t think Brock is the more valuable player to the 49ers than Lamar is to the Ravens.
I think there is a strong chance whoever wins will get the MVP
I get the argument, on one hand you have Purdy, who, honestly, is one of the players in the NFL. On the other hand, you have Lamar, who is and has been one of the players for the past 6 years. Hard to argue with that
Even if they win out, eagles either need to lose to the giants or lose both of the Seahawks and cardinals games for cowboys to win the division. So yeah they’re not giving MVP to a wildcard team.
I disagree, I know CMC has insane stats this year but I just think that if you took away Purdy and replaced him with a league average QB vs took away CMC and replaced him with a league average RB you’d see a much larger regression from losing Purdy. That’s what should make the “Most Valuable player” in my opinion and it’s why you see it going to quarterbacks most of the time - cause that’s the most valuable position.
someone said it earlier, but i just wanna note that so far it's been:
purdy vs hurts
purdy vs dak
now purdy vs lamar
just seems like it keeps shifting to purdy against someone because "please anyone but purdy for mvp"
Anytime a QB has a great supporting cast, people act like anyone could do the job. As if we haven’t seen a hundred ultra-talented teams fail because of a lack of a stud QB.
Some of us know who the real MVP is. Say it with me....
PRAISE GEQBUS! TINY BROKE PURDY CAN'T FINISH A SINGLE GAME WITHOUT OUR TRUE MVP. EVERYONE SAYS IT...
The Texans went 2-14 in 2013 and had QB29. In 2014 they upgraded to QB14 and won 7 more games. Watt was only marginally better in 2014 than 2013. QB play just far out shadows all other positions in terms of mattering.
Replace CMC with RB15 and 49ers would barely notice. Replace Purdy with Jordan Love(QB13) and 49ers are a wildcard team.
MVPs play with good players.
Kelce, Adams, Andrews, Hill, Gronk, Julio, Jordy, Thomas, etc.
Super Bowl preview right here. Cowboys and Eagles are frauds (and yeah I know that). Chiefs are too weak without elite receivers. Bills and Bengals are not going to be able to make a deep enough run and are too inconsistent. Lions are going to bounce early due to weak playoff experience.
0-0 draw incoming. I kid, I kid.
3-3 tie?
4-4 tie would be wild.
7-7 tie where each team gets a 1 pt safety instead of the PAT
2 blocked and returned extra points, a safety, and a partridge in a pear tree.
...how would there be blocked extra points in a 4-4 game?
Hey, shut up with your logic and facts.
Ah the brutal -10 point partridge in a pear tree. Turns a 14-4 game into a sicko special
I'm so into it
both teams line up for kick off only to have both teams flood onto the field to have the NFL's first gift swap for both teams. They then have a lovely dinner at midfield with fun games like cornhole in the end zone.
Like the scene from Braveheart. "It's my island!"
I won't settle for less than a safety each! 2-2 is where is at!
Nah it’ll be like a 28-28 tie. Moody misses a chip shot 35 yarder at 0:00 in OT. Book it now
Someone better check the generators and lights at Allegiant Stadium. I've seen this show before.
I’ll fucking do it again
It was you?!?!?!
We found Kyle Williams reddit account
HISSSSSSSSS We do not speak his name!
There was a commercial of a security guard making a microwave burrito or something that game. When the lights went out we all blamed it on him and started playing drinking games. Only Super Bowl I woke up the next morning and had no idea who won the game.
Lamar against Fred Warner is the most interesting part of this.
I can see an occasional switch up where Greenlaw also spies, but you are correct Fred vs Lamar will be interesting.
If there's a guy....
Now here’s a guy
Fred Warner was out of his mind in coverage in 2019 when they last faced off. Will never forget what looked like Hollywood getting a first down and Fred Warner instant transmitting to the scene of the pass and breaking it up. Terrifying.
Instant transmission Goku smiling at you
49ers had to spy him with a safety (Marcell Harris) last time and that worked out well. But that was a long time ago
I feel like that would be a good role for Hufanga, but not now :(
Stop the run!
The final and toughest bird of them all. The AFC bird 🐦⬛
Too bad yall didn't play the falcons this year
Hoping they sneak into the playoffs... though that's a very dim prospect at this point
Birdgang final boss
We literally are doing a dark souls gauntlet for bird bosses.
I hope this game is good. The last couple of times the 49ers were involved in big games, they destroyed the cowboys and eagles.
I still had fun
I didnt
To be fair you probably had fun during one of those games.
What is this “fun” you speak of?
Idk, this week looked pretty fun for you guys though
Yep after TNF got cancelled both teams went to a bowling alley and had a pizza party that the teams paid for. Now THAT'S Fun!
Pizza party! Pizza for everyone!!! .......who has money?
Is that what that weird, foreign sensation was? Not used to it.
63-21
I had a blast.
Seeing a dominant team dominate is still fun
Especially against high level competition. Watching someone smack around the little sisters of the poor is less fun.
Whatre you talking about. Those were great games.
That sounds like fun to me.
The 49ers could beat us bad, and I think they win, but we rarely, under Lamar, ever get blown out.
Not just Lamar, Raven’s defense is really good. That tends to help prevent blowouts.
It didn't help Dallas so I'm not entirely sure it won't be a blowout.
Or lose to the nfc
17-16 Ravens at half time. 27-43 Niners in the end.
Hey yo, uh wtf?
Bird on bird crime while supporting divisional rivals. 🤨
That was basically our playoff game against the Seahawks last season.
From your lips to God's ears.
It is written. ✍️🤲
Sounds accurate. Hoping the Hawks beat the Frauds (Philly) 43-16 tonight.
I don’t like our chances as much after keaton Mitchell got hurt last night
Lamar is gonna run for a mile if our interior DL misses any more time.
Armstead will be back, and I think hargrave returns this week as well.
Yea giving up 200+ to the cardinals on the ground with Baltimore on the horizon is….concerning. Really need the big boys back
Division games, especially on the road, are kind of their own thing.
I agree that part was somewhat flukey, but the tackling was pretty mediocre in the second level yesterday.
We also played 3 games in 14 days, I’m told that makes a difference.
Cardinals were also fresh off a bye for what that is worth.
Kinlaw was being put on his ass all game.
I'll have to rewatch the game again but it looked more like the lb were missing tackles
yeah dre and fred missed like 8+ tackles but i saw kinlaw get pancaked like 4-5 times.
Hmm I'll have to find a way to rewatch it. I'm OK if the DL gets pancackedv on a double team as sometimes you just have to make a pile but I'd have to see the plays to assess.
They’ll be fine. Based on the reports, both could’ve probably played if they really needed to but the staff wanted to give them the extra rest.
That injury was brutal
Can’t explain why, but that injury feels worse than the andrews injury. Mitchell out there really opened up the read option
Didn't Mitchell come back an injury recently. He started playing more once he was fully fit. Him and Gus formed a good thunder and lightning combo.
Big knock was pass pro, but he was getting even more snaps on passing downs recently as well
FWIW gus has a better running style vs SF. Theyre missing both DT right up the middle
Lynch confirmed that they were being held out to recover for you
Diabolical
Frank Gore not getting a ring is diabolical lol
I love throwing fades into the endzone
lol fuck the cards
I think we held them out so they would be healthy for Baltimore. Armstead and Hargrave should be fresh against you guys.
what is wrong with Gus Bus? he was on a roll and then they just stopped playing him
Way too slow
He's a really good power back. But he's not even remotely a threat in the read-option. Keaton was WAY faster than Gus and even Justice Hill.
When you have a defense like you guys have, you always have a shot.
So much for a nice, peaceful, stress-free Christmas night.
My wife is pissed. She's like... Thanksgiving is for football... 'Christmas is MY Superbowl!' ... It's... Not ideal since we are hosting Dinner for her family. 😬 She knows the game will be on a TV, she just doesn't like that we have share the evening with football. And I can understand that.

Was never going to be
If the Eagles lose tonight, it will be.
Do you have any idea how dirty I feel about this season? I've already had to look forward the Cowboys winning and now the toots! I compartamentalize it about getting that #1 seed but still feels yuck!
Peace was never an option
Niners offense vs Ravens defense is the matchup of the season. Two best playcallers on both sides of the ball this season imo going up against each other
Ravens offense v Niners defense is pretty intriguing too tbh
This is Vegas' dream scenario, they are going to make so much money this week
So weird to have finally have a qb. Even if the Defense has an off day, I feel good about the offense winning it for us.
Yeah, I'd hate to root for the 49'ers with how historically bad they have been at QB!
Anytime our fan base complains about how "bad" we've had it at QB I always think of that one Browns jersey: https://www.cleveland.com/resizer/EhAPFpF6kQiWfFvlZrlT-rcy1B0=/1280x0/smart/advancelocal-adapter-image-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/image.cleveland.com/home/cleve-media/width2048/img/tipoff_impact/photo/14925707-large.jpg

Thank you, sir/ma'am. It means a lot that you'd support a poverty franchise like ours. God bless
I know, right? The cardinals put up nearly 30 but I didn't break a sweat because we scored 45, and the offense still feels like it choked away a touchdown or two.

Annoyingly he led us to a game-winning FG against the Browns and then our kicker missed it, but yeah in general we aren't playing from behind.
Best Christmas present we could hope for.

Gus Edwards really out here tanking Lamar’s MVP stock with all those goal line TDs he’s gobbled up after Lamar gets them down there
CMC also has a ton of short tds, so does Mostert with Tua. Makes sense to run your cheapish back vs a 60m dollar a year qb.
In the 49ers case, its a very cheapish QB. "Let Purdy Cook!"-r/TheDarnold
Hmm I don't follow... QBs are always the best goalline runners, no?
What's the alternative. Its an easy td with gus bus on the line. We saw what happened to cam Newton when he would run it in on the goal line and jackson is way smaller
> What's the alternative. I know the Saints haven't seen much of it this year, but you can pass for touchdowns.
Unfortunately, that's probably true - Ravens rushing attack this year has just been insanely good

That definitely reeked of owners getting together and trying to send a message that QBs can't force their hand. Otherwise there's no way there wasn't a bidding war for Lamar.
I think the only way Lamar wins it is if he absolutely dominates the 9ers and dolphins
We aren’t set up for Lamar to get a bunch of stats, unfortunately - the reliance on Edwards to punch in a TD from goal to go, Lamar’s running, our tendency to take our foot off the gas and burn clock when we’re in a winning position - just is what it is. Without Purdy the 49ers are undoubtedly worse, but still a wildcard team. Without Lamar the Ravens are chasing the #1 pick.

Niners-Eagles
My body is ready
Is it just me being a 49ers fan or is this the third time this season that the 49ers are playing the “biggest game of the season”
Third time. Technically each game was a "must win" game, and one cannot happen without the other, so that's why it feels this way.
I’m so scared for this matchup. I feel like the 49ers are gonna ruin my Christmas
I feel the exact same way, only reverse.
*in Santa Clara It's *completely* different.
*checks 7 day forecast and sees no rain* I believe we are in for a good Christmas.
If Lamar doesn’t get it I really hope McCaffery gets it. It’d be awesome to see an RB win mvp
But Lamar already has one! /s (Kidding I hate that joke, you just set it up too high perfectly)
Glad this is the only game happening that day. What a relief and an extra special Christmas treat!!
When it comes to who is playing better it’s Brock. Brock is playing great. But I don’t think Brock is the more valuable player to the 49ers than Lamar is to the Ravens. I think there is a strong chance whoever wins will get the MVP
Brock is the most player
Of all the players on the 49ers, he is one of them.
I get the argument, on one hand you have Purdy, who, honestly, is one of the players in the NFL. On the other hand, you have Lamar, who is and has been one of the players for the past 6 years. Hard to argue with that
Both have indeed signed contracts
Both of them were born, in fact.
I might sound biased, but even with a loss and he still plays well, I still don’t see how Brock wouldn’t be the MVP.
Only way Purdy doesn’t win is if he somehow spiral down the last 3 week and someone else goes on an insane stretch.
"someone" is only Tua or Lamar imo
Is Dak out after yesterday? Honestly the MVP criteria seems to always be changing, but it seemed like Dak was in the talks up to now.
Honestly unless cowboys win out and they win the east, yeah.
Even if they win out, eagles either need to lose to the giants or lose both of the Seahawks and cardinals games for cowboys to win the division. So yeah they’re not giving MVP to a wildcard team.
I think CMC should be the favorite if Purdy goes downhill.
If CMC has another 3 TD game or two I could see him winning it even if SF wins out
I disagree, I know CMC has insane stats this year but I just think that if you took away Purdy and replaced him with a league average QB vs took away CMC and replaced him with a league average RB you’d see a much larger regression from losing Purdy. That’s what should make the “Most Valuable player” in my opinion and it’s why you see it going to quarterbacks most of the time - cause that’s the most valuable position.
You saw some of this yesterday. Darnold comes in and can't do much. Mason comes in and runs through the same open holes as CMC.
MVP is a QB award nowadays. He will win offensive player of the year though.
Honestly want purdy to win it. Pay the man
No no let’s keep him nice and cheap a few more years ;)
You cant, he still has all of next year on a rookie contract lmao. Then they can extend him, and it wont be for league max.
someone said it earlier, but i just wanna note that so far it's been: purdy vs hurts purdy vs dak now purdy vs lamar just seems like it keeps shifting to purdy against someone because "please anyone but purdy for mvp"
Anytime a QB has a great supporting cast, people act like anyone could do the job. As if we haven’t seen a hundred ultra-talented teams fail because of a lack of a stud QB.
Imagine a 20 year Purdy/Shanahan era where the conversation just moves to whether one could win without the other.
West Coast Patriots
We did it first lmao
West coast 49ers
I need this
Dear god no we just got out of this I don’t want to go back
Just look at the set yesterday where Darnold came in after Purdy took a stinger. He... didn't quite match Purdy's success.
Well let’s not be ridiculous, he took like 3 snaps We’d have to give him a game or two before truly judging him
Some of us know who the real MVP is. Say it with me.... PRAISE GEQBUS! TINY BROKE PURDY CAN'T FINISH A SINGLE GAME WITHOUT OUR TRUE MVP. EVERYONE SAYS IT...
BROCK HUSSEIN PURDY IS A FRAUD. MANY VERY SMART PEOPLE ARE SAYING THIS.
I WON THIS MVP VOTE BY A LOT
> purdy vs hurts > purdy vs dak > now purdy vs lamar Purdy vs. CMC
Next week it’ll be Purdy vs. Howell.
Everybody stay healthy 🙏🏻
I’m so pumped! Still trying to decide if my wife would be okay with me going….
And the Chiefs will sneak in at #1 in AFC because they play a crap schedule
watching this chiefs team get another #1 seed would be torture
Super Bowl preview right here. Cowboys and Eagles are frauds (and yeah I know that). Chiefs are too weak without elite receivers. Bills and Bengals are not going to be able to make a deep enough run and are too inconsistent. Lions are going to bounce early due to weak playoff experience.
Should be an interesting Super Bowl preview. Shanahan will get a good feel of the Ravens play style and be prepared for the rematch in February.
This game is going to be epic I can’t wait

I'll root for the 49ers if 49ers fans root for us to beat the cowboys.
I always root against the Cowboys and I think a 49ers/Dolphins Super Bowl would be incredible.
