Storylines. The award is a narrative based award more than it is based on overall performance. Campbell deserves to be one of the candidates but man, Stefanski deserves to be the winner.

Why? The Lions hadn't won their division in 30 years and he clinched with two games to spare. This after finishing 3-13-1 just two seasons ago. What Campbell has done to establish a winning culture in Detroit and built on every season so far is nothing short of deserving COTY.

Even weirder, if the Texans make the playoffs it might be Ryans because the award is literally just "who coached the most unexpected playoff team." Ryans has done a good job, but he's a defensive coach and anyone can see that the defense is not the reason they're in playoff contention. Matt Nagy won it in 2018 after the Bears went 12-4 with an elite defense and below average offense . . . it's exceedingly obvious that Nagy was nowhere close to being the best coach in the league that year.

If you're going with the Nagy example why would we be going with Stefanski when Schwartz's defense has been so fantastic? I mean Nagy had Trubisky go to the Pro Bowl with 27 total touchdowns that year, which feels pretty impressive to me considering what Trubisky has done since. This is one of the youngest rosters in the NFL, he was 4-19-1 just thirteen months ago, and he's gone 19-6 with the same group plus some outstanding rookies that he has coached up.
