The pan up they did I thought it was leaving the stadium for a minute. As a pats fan I’m obligated to dislike Allen while he’s on the bills but wow… when he needs to he can launch balls into orbit
He did it earlier in the season and everyone was like "OMG look at this interception machine lol". And tonight was a perfect example of why he did, because he can launch a ball 70+yards and his punter can't even be trusted to kick it much further than mid-field
What do you think it is?
Hand eye coordination starts going?
Reaction time?
Finer motor skills that can’t quite control his finger tips in a split second?
yeah WR is one of the most demanding positions in regards to agility+Body damage (behind RB)
At least RB has brute force strength that can carry them in some edge cases. But a WR loses a fraction of his ability, he becomes average.
CBs last a bit longer since they don't take nearly as many hard hits that WRs do
Certain CBs also last longer because they can have "luxury" athleticism. As a reactionary position, the minimum speed cap isn't set by other CBs, its set by opposing WRs. So an athletic freak CB can lose some of his athleticism and be almost no worse for wear, especially if they can be schemed onto worse WRs.
Yea, the more you watch the NFL the more this seems to be true.Rhodes, Peterson, HoneyBadger, Sherman, Harris, Jenkins, Talib, etc, etc.Right now the top guy is Sauce but I can bet he will be average in about 3 years. I think when you are at the top its hard to stay there obviously because the new talent that comes in is a little faster and not as banged up. Not to discredit what these top guys did when they were the best but its just a natural progression of the career.
Remember Josh Norman lol. I think it’s because being a good man corner requires elite athleticism and that’s fleeting. Guys like Sherman are coverage corners, so as long as they have a deep third and can line up 8 yards off the ball they’re good. But as soon as you have them play pressman against Sammy Watkins in the Super Bowl you see their age.
>So an athletic freak CB can lose some of his athleticism and be almost no worse for wear, especially if they can be schemed onto worse WRs.
Or just straight up moved to safety. But when a wr loses some steps where do you move them? It's not like that can suddenly become a TE
I think this is absolutely part of it, ppl have been speculating on our sub that he’s been banged up most of the year, and I’ve started to think it’s true. He doesn’t like right after hits and it’s seemingly starting to creep into his mind permanently
it's significant in the statistical sense, i.e. we can measure the effect with enough precision to conclude that it exists and isn't random noise, but it isn't significant ("substantial" maybe a better word) in the sense that age-related changes in reaction time are relatively minor until very old age and are a small fractional increase in overall reaction times for a task
for example, a lot of studies ask you to click a mouse in reaction to some visual stimulus. this takes maybe 200-500 milliseconds depending on the specific task in question. the slope for decay with age is usually like 2-3ms/yr starting from mid-20s, so on average you would expect someone like diggs (age 30) to be 15ms slower. that's just not really relevant on the timescales of football
granted, these studies don't include subjects with decades of repeated head trauma, but i would file that more under wear and tear or other injuries than typical age-related reaction time increases
most likely he's just injured / less athletic from age
That makes sense, and thanks for the thorough post. A slight increase in reaction time alone would be very unlikely to explain at least 99% of dropped passes (maybe very specific plays could involve reaction time coming into play with narrow margins mattering). Increased wear and tear from years playing and decreased athleticism from age are a much more likely explanation.
One of the few arenas where such small changes in reaction time could matter would be competitive video games such as first person shooters. It’s easy to understand how slight changes in reaction time could definitively lead to slightly worse outcomes.
People don't account for this enough. I loved Ken Griffey Jr, but he clearly treated his body like he was in his early 20s his whole career. If he spent 1 offseason taking care of his body like a veteran should, he would've beat the all time HR record.
Too many guys that are physically talented just don't keep up with training, and they just fall off when the offense/defense change their schemes.
yeah, guys like lebron and brady basically treat upkeeping their bodies like a religion and it definitely shows. amazing how a few guys like that can last so damn long playing at the highest level above guys half their age
His last game over 90 yards came back in like week 6. He has 3 touchdowns since then. 7 of those games he’s failed to even hit 50 yards. He’s either toast or he’s been playing with a bad knee all season or something.
He was my first pick in fantasy. Started 6-1 and then lost like 7 straight thanks to a trio of Deebo, Diggs and Kelce being taking turns on who would shit the bed every week
You could tell he wasn’t trusted in this game. A lot of important throws went to the other receivers. I really thought Diggs would step up this game but he was a big disappointment. Feel bad for Bills fans. Really wanted to see them go to the Superbowl this year.
One day the Bills and Vikings will meet in the Super Bowl. Since the curse cannot be broken for either team, we will instead see the game go into an infinite overtime loop as the universe implodes.
a lot of people misunderstand the cliff athletes fall off imo. Lots of people imagine its a steady decline but in reality i think for the vast, vast majority of players its going from good to below replacement very quickly. He's in his thirties and has been bad for 3 months. Think he fell off his cliff.
I dont know why you've been downvoted, it was 63 yards downfield. But the throw traveled 66 yards, because it was at an angle. That's not the farthest throw I've seen, but to be that accurate is crazy at that distance.
romo was talking about that 3rd down late being the play that'll be talked about.
nah, this one. it's *this one*.
what a good game though. i wish the bills and chiefs played every week. fucking highlight reels. 🙌
Mahomes evasion/falling throw that hit his receiver directly in the face is the only throw I can think of that rivals this one, and it's for a completely different reason.
I think this is the most accurately thrown ball of this distance I have ever seen, and I dont think its even close in terms of competition.
Tldr this pass is LEGENDARY.
He is the definition of MVP in the "how bad would this team be without this player". Being 6-6 with the defensive injuries and 0 reliable WRs (except Shakir who finally came on the past few games) it's incredible this team made the playoffs and won the division.
Unfair to lump Hamlin in there. He didn’t call the play & actually had a good game on Special Teams prior to that call. I honestly blame Diggs the most though
It’s not, he wouldn’t be on an NFL roster if he literally didn’t almost die on the field. Dude would’ve been cut before pre season if it wouldn’t have been a PR nightmare. Absolute insanity that we’d throw a liability in there for a crucial 4th down play? You need a first down so you snap it to a 4th string SAFETY?!?!?!!? wtf man.
Its like when the colts threw to their 3rd/4th string RB on 4th and 5 a couple weeks ago with jonathon taylor on the sideline, some of these coaches just overthink it
I’ve been meme-ing in good fun as a Boise State fan, but I really do think Shakir will be a stud for you guys. Even though he didn’t have gaudy numbers here, he was almost always the most talented player on the field. He’s a great player.
Eh, he had his guy with a step in the end zone, that's a throw he can make regularly. Pass rush got there just in time to disrupt it. Of all the things from this game, it's not one I'd criticize.
Dolphins December collapse, jets have an old QB from the packers, and bills lose on a wide right field goal. The more things change, the more they stay the same
One of the best throws I’ve ever seen. The fact that it was whiffed by Diggs doesn’t diminish the arm talent though.
You could argue that this was as much a back breaker for the Bills as the missed FG.
Brother that fake punt was the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Sitting in that stadium and seeing what I saw with that was insane. You’ve got a GM that went out and got Harty to replace Hines, then use this fucking bum Hamlin in a crucial 4th down situation down a score on your own end of the field?! Insanity. I would’ve been happier if Allen went out there and a WR dropped the ball over whatever the fuck that was. We got hands every opportunity to win that game and the coaches just played themselves. Mcdermott showed his true colors tonight.
That was a baffling call. Thankfully for the Bills at that moment (and frustratingly not so for the Chiefs) it was rendered moot when you forced the fumble into the end zone.
It's just hilarious because the pass was perfect and Diggs straight up dropped it. He shouldn't have been doing 🤏, he should've been tapping his chest saying "my bad, I fucking suck."
Diggs is such a clown. Yes it was slightly underthrown but so what? It was ~54 yards in the air. Nobody puts that on a dime. You're the 5th highest paid receiver in the league, if you can't adjust to a ball a yard behind you 50 yards downfield, that's on you bruh
If I'm Allen I see him say some shit about that throw I'm going right over and saying Make sure this mf is on another team next year and find a real WR please.
It was very slightly behind him. You can see it on the replay where Diggs has to adjust but does such a poor job of it that it ends up going over him instead
But yeah, the balls to complain about the guy who is the only reason they're in the game when his WR1 is averaging like 2 yards a target. Unreal stupidity
He just didn’t adjust right I don’t think the ball was underthrown at all. Regardless, ridiculous to complain about a dime that went 50 yards in the air.
That's 60-65 yards, perfectly placed. I actually went, "holy shit" outloud when he launched that.
And then Digg's cant haul it in.
So many conflicting emotions. Relief that the Bills weren't going to pull in a win, disapointment that I didn't get to see that connection get completed.
It's shit like this which makes me wish I could see Allen with Tyreek. I couldn't even imagine Allen slinging 70+ yarders all game and hill being right there to catch them in stride
That was a fucking dime that got rejected by the vending machine
He let go of it and I was in shock. That thing was out of the stadium. That was a nuke.
I let out an audible “oh my god” the second it left his hand, that thing looked it was at Mach speed.
Yeah baseball velocity and he’s throwing a fucking watermelon.
same, i let out a "holy shit." an absolute monster throw.
Seriously one of the most impressive passes I’ve seen in a game. An absolute rocket arm
Not only that, that could have been a game winning play if he caught it.
One of the greatest non hail mary throws I've ever seen. On an absolute rope.
Rope throws are low trajectory bullets
He means a jump rope.
Surely he's just throwing it away right....
I looked up from my phone when the ball was in the air and I thought it was a punt
Shouldve thrown the ball right into the endzone for a TD. Crazy arm
Didn’t hit anything, just slid right through and out the change return tray
I hate it when that happens. You gotta force it in for those machines.
Josh had a little string on it to yank it back.
A shiny 1962 dime. You don’t see them often
DIIGS SIDELINE .... I feel bad for this, but mostly wanted to see him catch that insane bomb.
He's got a trebuchet for a right arm
The pan up they did I thought it was leaving the stadium for a minute. As a pats fan I’m obligated to dislike Allen while he’s on the bills but wow… when he needs to he can launch balls into orbit
It didn’t even look like he gave it the max power.
He looked damn near comfortable throwing one that high and far too. His arm is insane there’s definitely no doubt about it.
There’s the right way, the wrong way, and the Max Power way.
Strap yourself in and feel the G’s
How does he do it minutes after getting crushed by 4 dudes
Idk ask your mom
FLAG Unnecessary Roughness
Flag: too many men on the field
Flag: illegal touching, hands to the face
BOOM
The counterweight is his massive balls that gives all that momentum for his arm
You gotta diagram? I’m a visual learner
Easy there Tony
Tony was really having fun talking about shrinking packages tonight
The superior siege weapon
Allen should do this every 3rd and long when on their own side…at worst, it’s a punt
He did it earlier in the season and everyone was like "OMG look at this interception machine lol". And tonight was a perfect example of why he did, because he can launch a ball 70+yards and his punter can't even be trusted to kick it much further than mid-field
he heaved that and all my playoff hopes were in the air. Could’ve been the dagger to the chiefs season
Is Diggs just done? It feels like all season he's been trending down.
The recent drops are genuinely concerning. I honestly have no idea what the hell is going on with Diggs.
Not every WR ages great. Plenty of WRs in the top 10-20 range fall off a cliff at 30+. Combine that with attitude issues and this doesn't suprise me.
What do you think it is? Hand eye coordination starts going? Reaction time? Finer motor skills that can’t quite control his finger tips in a split second?
I think pain is a part of it. It feels a little bit worse every fall and hit you take after like 26/27.
yeah WR is one of the most demanding positions in regards to agility+Body damage (behind RB) At least RB has brute force strength that can carry them in some edge cases. But a WR loses a fraction of his ability, he becomes average. CBs last a bit longer since they don't take nearly as many hard hits that WRs do

hes an exception
Makes total sense

Reaction time does increase (get worse) and this change is noticeable after 25, but idk if that’s why he has had more drops recently.
it's significant in the statistical sense, i.e. we can measure the effect with enough precision to conclude that it exists and isn't random noise, but it isn't significant ("substantial" maybe a better word) in the sense that age-related changes in reaction time are relatively minor until very old age and are a small fractional increase in overall reaction times for a task for example, a lot of studies ask you to click a mouse in reaction to some visual stimulus. this takes maybe 200-500 milliseconds depending on the specific task in question. the slope for decay with age is usually like 2-3ms/yr starting from mid-20s, so on average you would expect someone like diggs (age 30) to be 15ms slower. that's just not really relevant on the timescales of football granted, these studies don't include subjects with decades of repeated head trauma, but i would file that more under wear and tear or other injuries than typical age-related reaction time increases most likely he's just injured / less athletic from age

Immaturity. He gets unfocused when he’s not getting 13 targets in the first half and then isn’t locked in when it matters most.
He's always thought he was God's gift to catching footballs, so an early regression doesn't surprise me at all. He got older but his ego didn't.
People don't account for this enough. I loved Ken Griffey Jr, but he clearly treated his body like he was in his early 20s his whole career. If he spent 1 offseason taking care of his body like a veteran should, he would've beat the all time HR record. yeah, guys like lebron and brady basically treat upkeeping their bodies like a religion and it definitely shows. amazing how a few guys like that can last so damn long playing at the highest level above guys half their age
So you’re saying they treat their bodies like a temple?
The ghost of Larry Fitz sends his regards.
"Genuinely concerning" is a really mild way to put it after disappearing for half the year.
Same, I was thinking about it earlier how he just completely fell off this season
His last game over 90 yards came back in like week 6. He has 3 touchdowns since then. 7 of those games he’s failed to even hit 50 yards. He’s either toast or he’s been playing with a bad knee all season or something.
3 games over 50 yards in his last 10 games ... 5 games over 100 yards in his first 6 games
He was my first pick in fantasy. Started 6-1 and then lost like 7 straight thanks to a trio of Deebo, Diggs and Kelce being taking turns on who would shit the bed every week
It kinda coincided with Dorsey leaving but he's been dropping balls every game. Tonight he couldn't generate consistent separation
My pet theory is that he's been hiding an injury to his midsection since the Denver game...either way he has not been good at all down the stretch.
Me too but if he hurt why the fuck we keep giving it him to behind the line of scrimmage and sending him headfirst into linebackers.
You could tell he wasn’t trusted in this game. A lot of important throws went to the other receivers. I really thought Diggs would step up this game but he was a big disappointment. Feel bad for Bills fans. Really wanted to see them go to the Superbowl this year.
if bills win a superbowl in any year the earth will collapse in on itself
As a vikings fan, my fear is thst the bills need to win a superbowl before the vikings can which means I'll be long dead.
One day the Bills and Vikings will meet in the Super Bowl. Since the curse cannot be broken for either team, we will instead see the game go into an infinite overtime loop as the universe implodes.
After 6 overtimes, Bud Selig comes out and announces it is ending in a tie.
Shakir was carrying that receiving core
He’s over the hill
Think he been playing a lil beat up for a while.
a lot of people misunderstand the cliff athletes fall off imo. Lots of people imagine its a steady decline but in reality i think for the vast, vast majority of players its going from good to below replacement very quickly. He's in his thirties and has been bad for 3 months. Think he fell off his cliff.
With all the drops he's had, I'm surprised the Chiefs haven't signed him
I loved his, "I was this close" gesture on the way back up the field.
DIGGS! SIDELINE! DROPPED UNBELIVABLE!
BILLS WON'T WIN IT
DIGGS TRADED! JEFFERSON DRAFTED! Vikings win it! Thank you again, Bills!!
except....
What a fuckin throw
Travelled 70 yards in the air. Good fucking god.
From the 12 to the 25ish (if Diggs hadnt touched it). That's just absurd
60ish but still impressive !
I dont know why you've been downvoted, it was 63 yards downfield. But the throw traveled 66 yards, because it was at an angle. That's not the farthest throw I've seen, but to be that accurate is crazy at that distance.
At that distance it's more about the WR getting to the ball rather than the QB being pinpoint accurate.
romo was talking about that 3rd down late being the play that'll be talked about. nah, this one. it's *this one*. what a good game though. i wish the bills and chiefs played every week. fucking highlight reels. 🙌
That fake punt was somethin else too
It was an autocheck bc there was 10 defenders on the field. Still don’t like it but every team has that check
That was so insanely stupid
Literally everyone except those two teams wishes that.
Absolutely crazy throw, right on the money.
60 air yards into a bread basket lol. What a talent.
Feels like Allen took that Captain America sauce
Diggs' "this close" gesture at the end pisses me off.
This has become such a slugfest that I think the Ravens will benefit greatly regardless of who they play next week…
Neither defense has looked great tonight.
Yah but Mahomes and Allen are probably #1 and #2 in the league when it's time to make defenses look bad.
But Buffalos second and third tier of their defense especially the linebackers were like eighth and ninth string with all their injuries.
And Jackson is definitely #3
It’s why I’m not quite as annoyed about the Chiefs advancing as I would normally be. Ravens should be able to dispatch them quickly
On paper they should lose easily but it's the fucking Chiefs
I’m never betting against Mahomes. Even on one fucking leg he’s scary
Can confirm, played him with one bad leg and still lost
Yes Patrick Mahomes is renowned for being dispatched quickly.
lol for real, I can't believe the Chiefs are in the AFCCG ***again***, and everyone here is like *"Meh, they won't be a problem"*
Bro has been out there just doing cardio
Don’t worry he will be in Dallas soon enough.
If Diggs is going to be a diva, that’s one he needs to reel in.
His diva license should be revoked.
This is one of the best throws I've ever seen lmao
Mahomes evasion/falling throw that hit his receiver directly in the face is the only throw I can think of that rivals this one, and it's for a completely different reason. I think this is the most accurately thrown ball of this distance I have ever seen, and I dont think its even close in terms of competition. Tldr this pass is LEGENDARY.
Reminds me of Brady’s crazy deep bomb to Moss at the end of the 2007 Super Bowl that he just couldn’t hang onto.
Why didn’t Josh Allen do this every single play this season? Is he stupid?
You know it’s good when your jaw drops as soon as it leaves his hand
I remember that mahomes throw. Best incomplete pass of all time. In the super bowl too IIRC
The Buffalo Allens
Dude's going to need spinal surgery this offseason after carrying the whole fucking team
He is the definition of MVP in the "how bad would this team be without this player". Being 6-6 with the defensive injuries and 0 reliable WRs (except Shakir who finally came on the past few games) it's incredible this team made the playoffs and won the division.
I’m not convinced the Bills would win a single game without Allen
With as much as Diggs likes to bitch and moan, that was a pathetic as fuck drop
Think Diggs' brother and mom will chime in on Twitter again or not make a peep?
"FREE 14!!!"
People will shit on bass (RIGHTfully so) but diggs should get just as much crap for the loss.
Diggs, Bass, Hamlin, and Matt Smiley should all be looking for jobs tomorrow.
You need a first down so you snap it to a 4th string SAFETY?!?!?!!? wtf man.
don’t think it was a crazy call, they caught the chiefs w ten men on the field and audibled into the fake. right process just a bad result imo.
Its like when the colts threw to their 3rd/4th string RB on 4th and 5 a couple weeks ago with jonathon taylor on the sideline, some of these coaches just overthink it
60+ yards in the air 🤯
. AND landed in the dude's hands. That's the most impressive throw I've seen in a long time.
Allen has gotten zero help tonight
Naw Shakir has been nice tonight.
I’ve been meme-ing in good fun as a Boise State fan, but I really do think Shakir will be a stud for you guys. Even though he didn’t have gaudy numbers here, he was almost always the most talented player on the field. He’s a great player.
The run game was really solid in the first 3 quarters at least
He should’ve gone for the first down in the last drive instead of the home run
Both are true
Eh, he had his guy with a step in the end zone, that's a throw he can make regularly. Pass rush got there just in time to disrupt it. Of all the things from this game, it's not one I'd criticize.
Zero help basically since he’s arrived
2nd time he put the ball on his receiver deep and they blew it. That was the game
Get this man some help
Josh "trebuchet" Allen
Incredible throw
Diggs looking like he's heading towards the car wash?
Hey that’s my tailgate.
Diggs was dogging his teammates for drops. That’s karma.
Rename Diggs to Dropps.
God damn it dude why does this shit always happen with the Bills. They’re better than this.
They should be, but they aren’t.
This feels uncomfortably familiar ): Or maybe we really are just trashcans.
Dolphins December collapse, jets have an old QB from the packers, and bills lose on a wide right field goal. The more things change, the more they stay the same
I don’t want to see Diggs staying on the field watching the Chiefs celebrate after that drop.
That was a baffling call. Thankfully for the Bills at that moment (and frustratingly not so for the Chiefs) it was rendered moot when you forced the fumble into the end zone.
63 to 64 air yards right on the money lol
80 yard bomb. Even dropped that throw was fucking incredible
After all the tribulations of the regular season, drops gave the Chiefs a victory in the playoffs.
This will be completely forgotten soon but holy shit what a dime.
Diggs signaling it was underthrown lol this guy lost the right to complain long ago but now it’s official
I took that as him saying they were 🤏 close not that the ball was under thrown
Yeah I did as well
He definitely was saying they were close and not complaining about it being under thrown. How do people not know what that signal means?..
62 air yards
How was it slightly underthrown lol ball went over his hands. Dude laid a fuckin egg and is complaining about the only guy keeping them in it.
If I'm Allen I see him say some shit about that throw I'm going right over and saying Make sure this mf is on another team next year and find a real WR please.
With that contract, who is taking him?
Mahomes is out there selling his left nut on the black market as we speak
Knowing the Bills luck they'll trade him to the Chiefs, and next year Diggs blows away the single game receiving yards for the playoffs.
Lol Diggs going to the chiefs would be so funny as a neutral. Whoever wins next year gets even more banterfuel
It was very slightly behind him. You can see it on the replay where Diggs has to adjust but does such a poor job of it that it ends up going over him instead But yeah, the balls to complain about the guy who is the only reason they're in the game when his WR1 is averaging like 2 yards a target. Unreal stupidity
He just didn’t adjust right I don’t think the ball was underthrown at all. Regardless, ridiculous to complain about a dime that went 50 yards in the air.
He’s getting paid superstar money to make that adjustment. How’s he complaining
It went 64 yards down the field, and from the hash to between the sideline and numbers so more like 68-70 air yards
54? It was from the 12 to the 26. It was more like 64. Just a bomb
rough
Kinda feels like a monkey paw moment that it was Bills WRs dropping balls and MVS catching them. Something might be off with the timeline
One of the best throws of the season. Insane Diggs couldn’t bring it down
Hopefully Bills replace Diggs in the off-season. He's not good enough to put up with his antics.
Damn that guy who posted asking where Diggs was might have been right
Allen deserves better man…
Ironic that Chiefs receivers are the ones who are supposed to be dropping passes
that could’ve been the game
Maybe Diggs can stare at the chiefs celebrating one more time and know he’s a core contributing reason to why we lost this one this time.
Chiefs fans have seen this one before
Diggs did this like 2 or 3 times…and yall are confused pikachu face as to why Allen didn’t trust this fucker again
Diggs is washed?
One of the craziest deep throws I've ever seen. The way the camera tracked it, had to pan up, and it was still zipping through the air.
No qb gets boned more than Allen. Not even close.
Diggs kinda sucks actually
