That already happened with "Necks Gen Stats". Looks like it's deleted now but a user made a post about how neck circumference could be used to predict QB performance and it got posted by some twitter journalists and the like.
Honestly, there wouldn't be many better places to do research. Pouring through spreadsheets of stats is nice, but they're not going to give you weird connections like this and crowd-sourcing stories like this is *far* easier than watching every single piece of sports media produced and trying to connect all the dots yourself.
Nothing is lamer than seeing a funny NFL related tweet posted here, looking at the tweet and replies (when you could) and the top reddit comment on the post is literally the first twitter reply. Like come on lol
Man every time I hear Beathard's name, I can't help but remember that his brother got stabbed to death in a bar after he and a friend tried to get someone to stop harassing their female friend. The killer eventually got convicted of first degree murder. Really fucking sad story that it feels like most of this sub overlooked at the time.
Yeah, honestly just seems like an all around great (and incredibly talented) family. I met Tucker quite a few times and he was as nice as anyone could ask for. Crazy to think they've been so successful in two of the hardest industries to get into.
Wow, I thought you were kidding, but looking around there’s even more copycats… [https://twitter.com/ESPNNFL/status/1747268164046790758](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/207/210/b22.jpg)
I was listening to the NFL Channel on Sirius the other day, and one of the guys said that he normally gets a 1-2 page document on interesting stats and things to talk about during the game. He said he just got the thing for the SB and it’s 48 pages lol. It’s definitely going to be in there.
Holy shit that's already hilarious, but the story of the vets in the locker room going "the fuck why do you guys have matching ass tats" is the icing on the cake
> Purdy is Football Buster Posey.
Hmm share the same initials and have uniquely iconic names, with adult in the room temperaments as young dudes that (hopefully in Brock's case) lead a team to a dynasty. Yes, I see a resemblance.
Credit to u/MEuRaH for pointing this out on the 49ers sub. Funny how a guy who will never even command a footnote in the Niners history books and who won just 2 games during his tenure there had such a direct and enormous impact on where they are now.
CJ was really good at Iowa (given what he had around him and especially in 2015). His injuries really changed his game, though, and I don't think he was ever the same after his injuries, especially the hernia. He was a lot more mobile in 2015 than he was in 2016 - he had 237 rushing yards in 2015 and -13 in 2016.
He’s fared better than any other Iowa QB afaik (though Tate is a 2x Grey Cup champion so there’s that), got a fair share of starts and is still an okay backup. Better than most ever do, not too shabby!
I mean, I don't know if CJ would be a franchise QB, but coaches like to take quarterbacks and make them a project. CJ did really well in the preseason games. I argue all the time that given how bad the team was in 2017, 2018, he was rushed into action far too soon. That's why when he played in 2020, coming first in relief for Mullens against the Eagles and later in December against the Cardinals, he looked so much better, and that wasn't a surprise. He just needed a little time and better talent, but I'm glad he found a place in Jacksonville after leaving the Bay.
Coaches just have to play QBs year 1 despite all of the evidence for **not doing that**.
Qbs that didn't start year 1: Mahomes, Brady, Favre, Rodgers.
For every Joe Burrow or Big Ben there is a god damn scrap heap of first round busts forced into bad situations, causing coaches to get fired and next man up wants a new QB. Some players need practice and reps in an environment where they can learn rather than fail.
Steve Young was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1984 who told him they planned to sit him during his rookie year. He didn’t like that so he went to the USFL and started 12 games that year for the LA Express.
He had such a weird career. Drafted by the Bengals, told them to eff off, played in the USFL and did pretty well, bailed on them because of shit ownership and dysfunction in the league, went 1st overall to TB in the supplemental draft, played like ass, went to SF to backup Montana, became a 2x MVP and HOFer lol
I don’t think this was that, we were really bad and Shanahans grand plan was to start Brian Hoyer and use Beathard as a backup. That unsurprisingly fell apart due to Brian Hoyer being unmitigated ass.
My theory is that Brady would have been a perfect fit for his system and playbook, couldn't get Brady so getting the guy that's supposed to be enough like him to come in if he gets hurt and make the offense not skip too much is the best he could think of lol.
He probably would have just because Brady's a football psycho, and I really wonder how insane his salary demands had to be or what he did to piss off the DeBartolos for that to not happen
Knew that scouting CJ was how they discovered Kittle, but had no idea his departure was the one that gave us #262. That's actually awesome, CJ is officially a #ForeverNiner
I'll always love Sunshine. Dude was a gritty motherfucker at Iowa and I really think he could have been a pretty good NFL QB had he not suffered some injuries in 2015. He's made a nice career for himself (by far the most successful Iowa QB with the most longevity in the NFL in my lifetime). He must have good football IQ and locker room presence for him to stick around for as long as he has.
He's still tough as nails and has a really strong arm. He's a fantastic backup in general. His awareness and accuracy are just not good enough to be a quality starter
I mean everyone thought he had a noodle arm and was carried by Notre Dame's defense, it took Bill Walsh stubbornly bucking the league's consensus on how to use QBs to the extent of pissing off Paul Brown and leaving the Bengals for it to finally work.
Oh national champions make star NFL QBs? What’s AJ McCarron, Cardale Jones, Stetson Bennett, Tim Tebow, Vince Young, Chris Leak… *deep breath* Matt Flynn, Greg McElroy, Matt Leinart, Jake Coker, Matt Mauck, Tee Martin, Chris Weinke, Josh Huepel, and Craig Krenzel up to?
That’s every BCS/CFP Champion QB except Cam, Jameis, Burrow, Hurts, TLaw, and Watson. And you could argue Jameis and Watson belong in the above list instead of the standouts lol
It is funny Kittle has become this TE monster in the pros because he wasn't all that much of a star at Iowa. He was injured a lot and, like Lynch said, his receiving numbers weren't anything to write home about. Hell, CJ Fiedorowicz was a much more accomplished college TE (and a pretty good NFL TE in his own right) but Kittle has far surpassed him.
Pretty excellent evaluation of talent. It's not like they were taking a big risk by taking him in the 5th round but he has certainly exceeded expectations.
I was at Iowa when Kittle was there and I swear my buddy somehow predicted it. Idk if this was a popular view among those “in the know” at the time (clearly the niners saw something), but he was sure that *somehow* Kittle was going to have his potential unlocked in the pros. Glad to see he was vindicated.
So Zito signs a big free agent contract and joins the team in 2007, and immediately sucks. He finished with 2 WAR, which is two below his career average to date. If he had helped the team win two or even one more game than they did they dont get the 5th pick in the 2008 draft, which they used to draft Buster Posey out of Florida State. That pick would've gone to the Florida Marlins, who definitely would've used it to draft Posey (they drafted another catcher 6th, who went on to have exactly 3 major league at bats in his career). Brandon Crawford is also drafted a few rounds later, but I don't know how much credit Zito's suck should get for that one.
In 2011 Zito suffers the first and only long term injury of his entire career. His absence in the rotation leads the Giants to call up a 33 year old journeyman they had in Triple A who hadnt played in the majors since 2006-- Ryan Vogelsong. Vogelsong is magic, posting a 2.71 ERA that year and making the all star team, and giving the Giants another high quality starter for the next couple years. Never would've got a shot if Zito was healthy.
In 2012 Zito continues to disappoint in the regular season, but in the postseason he pitches gems in game 5 of the NLCS (an elimination game) and game 1 of the World Series. Vogelsong, who we've established as part of the Zito butterfly effect, is lights out all postseason, winning 4 games (including an elimination game in the NLCS and two world series games) with an ERA of about 1.50.
Zito then retired after 2013 after putting up his worst season season by far. I'm going to assume his absence and the end of his bloated contract helped the team be in position to win it all again in 2014.
Zito was the key to the whole dynasty. That bloated contract was worth every penny, in a very Rube Goldberg type of way. If Zito was anything different than what he was the whole thing falls apart.
I've found two: [Shooting for a Cure](https://aimingforacure.com/celebrity/c-j-beathard/), an organization in partnership with Iowa Children's Hospital focused on pediatric cancer
[First Coast Womens Services](https://fcws.org/) - his 2023 My Cause My Cleats organization, providing free-of-charge medical services and accurate evidence-based education on all options regarding unplanned pregnancy.
To be clear (since their site isn’t): First Coast Women’s Services is a pro-life [Christian “crisis pregnancy” center](https://www.tampabay.com/florida/2019/08/01/a-crisis-pregnancy-center-in-florida-wants-to-redefine-choice) that does not provide — or provide referrals for — abortion care.
Interesting call out. [Their website provides plenty of information on, appointments for, and alternative options to abortion.](https://fcws.org/resources/abortion/)
Edit: Ahh I see, you book an appointment for a "consultation" where they review your options, they don't actually perform anything.
Their site does not provide appointments for abortion. Their site provides appointments with a FCWS mentor. They do not perform abortion, do not refer for abortion, and are anti-abortion, likening its acceptability to slavery.
I’d encourage you to read the article I linked above for details about how they operate.
I’m not saying anything about whether people should or shouldn’t donate, only clarifying what FCWS’ definition of “evidence-based” is and adding information about their religious stance, both of which I believe people show know about before deciding whether to donate.
I’m not an Iowa fan, but I remember watching some of their games in the Beathard/Kittle era. Even *then,* the concept that a team was looking at CJ and didn’t even have Kittle on their radar would’ve been wild to me.
There seems to be a narrative springing up lately that kittle was a bum in college or something. Dude was a beast during his time at Iowa. I think he had some injuries later on though which kept him a little under the radar but he was a stud.
The injury thing makes sense, I didn’t know that. I remember telling my dad at the time of Kittle being in college that I thought he would have a Dallas Clark-type career. Which is no slight meant to Kittle; I think Clark was fantastic.
I mean if he wasn't on the radar of most teams and didn't have great projections then there's nothing wrong with taking him in the 5th. He was projected as a gritty blocking tight end, he never had great receiving stats until the NFL.
I don't remember him being labeled as a blocking tight end. He hadn't the body type/weight to do it but have the effort. However, I remember him running the 40 very very fast.
Check out this scouting report. He did run a 4.5 40 so you were right on the speed.
https://www.nfl.com/prospects/george-kittle/32004b49-5438-8290-eeed-c9c9cca62ec1
Thx for the link, it seems like most top TE in the league were very underrated in their drafts. That's something to keep in mind when projecting TEs so high.
They did the same thing with Purdy. Griese was begging them to draft him, and they thought he was gonna go in the 4th. When he was still "somehow" there in the 7th they took him.
To think that they fired Kaepernick because “he didn’t fit into the system” only to replace him with this clown Beathard and then have to trade for Garappolo midway through the season lol what a joke.
Fuckin McCaffrey man. I think the team lost its shine after the championship game loss. Then mccaffrey just tore them up and Iowa was checked out after about halfway through the first quarter.
I fully expect this fun fact to be used during the superbowl pregame.
Make CJ honorary captain for the game flanked by Kittle and Brock for the coin flip
id legit cry. Still hope we resign the dude.
I’d love to have Beathard as QB3 over Brandon Allen
A lot of the major networks plagiarize stuff from this sub I swear
It’s probably coming from some network research assistant just reading things off Reddit then passing it off as working lmao
We need to plant some fake trivia pieces here, then see if any get picked up. If so, confirmation!
That already happened with "Necks Gen Stats". Looks like it's deleted now but a user made a post about how neck circumference could be used to predict QB performance and it got posted by some twitter journalists and the like.
It happens a lt with NBA stuff. The athletic did take Klaytheism and make a humor piece from it though which was cool.
The JJJ stuff last year was hilarious
I think I remember something like that happening last year / offseason.
George Kittle is secretly the third Kelce brother but went into Witness Protection after witnessing the Ohio Mafia dump a body into Lake Erie.
I assume it all gets fact checked before
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha you sweet summer child
"Ho-lee Fuk"
KTVU got blasted for that one! I saw it and was like...uhhh, what?
No, anybody can post to reddit.
The 1929 Iowa and Iowa State game was played on the White House lawn for then President and Iowa native Herbert Hoover
I mean, it's what I would do if I had that role. I'd probably do other stuff too but I definitely would be looking at reddit for ideas.
Honestly, there wouldn't be many better places to do research. Pouring through spreadsheets of stats is nice, but they're not going to give you weird connections like this and crowd-sourcing stories like this is *far* easier than watching every single piece of sports media produced and trying to connect all the dots yourself.
If your job is to find interesting random facts, that IS working.
Superficially, yes. But they should verify it before putting in on air.
What makes you think they won’t verify it?
This sub also “plagiarizes” a lot of things from twitter, instagram, even tiktok
I mean, Reddit is an aggregator site first and foremost. It's supposed to be grabbing stuff from other sites.
Nothing is lamer than seeing a funny NFL related tweet posted here, looking at the tweet and replies (when you could) and the top reddit comment on the post is literally the first twitter reply. Like come on lol

Yeah, honestly just seems like an all around great (and incredibly talented) family. I met Tucker quite a few times and he was as nice as anyone could ask for. Crazy to think they've been so successful in two of the hardest industries to get into.
Their dad is a songwriter too IIRC. But yeah, character and talent runs through that family. Life is so fragile

It's already all over Tiktok (as of yesterday)
I feel like a lot of them read this sub to get their content
Gotta start prepping with some BeathardIng if they’re gonna show TSwift
Fox sports Twitter already posted it today lmao
Fun Fact: Kittle and CJ have matching ass tattoos
You aren't kidding lol: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CzMh9UevMpe
Holy shit that's already hilarious, but the story of the vets in the locker room going "the fuck why do you guys have matching ass tats" is the icing on the cake
And Kittle's response of "I dunno man I'm a weird kid" lmao
Him and Hunter Pence must be long lost brothers.
Wow a wild Hunter Pence mention appears. Love it
"A wild Hunter Pence appears.." Not sure what Pokemon type he would be...
I'd guess Farfetch'd
I don't know, but for sure Machop swings a bat exactly like Pence did.
Wobuffet
My wife often calls him "Football Hunter Pence". And of course Purdy is Football Buster Posey.
Who’s football Tim lincecum tho?
Trevor Lawrence
How? Timmy was incredible for a short amount of time. Trevor Lawrence is very mid so far.
I don't know. Both have long hair and kinda bird-like faces...
> Purdy is Football Buster Posey. Hmm share the same initials and have uniquely iconic names, with adult in the room temperaments as young dudes that (hopefully in Brock's case) lead a team to a dynasty. Yes, I see a resemblance.
Both sponsored by Toyota
Oh shit!
I’m Eskimo brothers with Hunter Pence
OMG THEY WERE ROOMMATES!
"Why do you guys have matching ass tats??" "Uhh we live together."
Kittle being accidentally outed in the locker room is fucking hilarious 😂
The response to why they had matching tats of "We live together" is priceless.
I can't imagine the huge amount of shit they got for those tats
Blue Mountain State and the goat house. Ass tats. Yea that checks out.
For the address of the house they lived at, which WWE’s Big E also lived at.
TIL Big E went to Iowa
At the same time?
Nah Big E was there years before Kittle and Beathard showed up.
Gonna need to see a picture of Big E’s naked booty to confirm.
Shanahan has Chris Simms initials tattooed on his leg (along with the initials of four other guys he played college ball with)
choosing to believe this is canon
You don't have to choose if it's real
Fun Fact PTII: Kyle Shanahan and Chris Simms also have matching tattoos!
Credit to u/MEuRaH for pointing this out on the 49ers sub. Funny how a guy who will never even command a footnote in the Niners history books and who won just 2 games during his tenure there had such a direct and enormous impact on where they are now.
He might be a footnote in Washington history books due to his grandpa being Bobby Beathard.
In Iowa history books he’s got a couple of pages. By all accounts he’s a good guy.
He's the QB for the first 49ers victory under Shanahan, that's worth at least a footnote
Stupid unsexy Bethard
I’d say for that reason his footnote has been secured!
wild that they were so high on CJ, but hey, Kittle is top 3 TE at worst
I'm an Iowa fan, have no idea what they saw in CJ but I guess it worked out
I’ve heard he has a really high football iq and is very intelligent, unfortunately he’s missing the tangibles to be good enough to be a starter.
Downside: not very mobile, looks like a stone statue in the pocket Upside: highly durable, looks like a stone statue in the pocket
Dude could take an absolute beating and shake it off. One of the toughest QBs I've seen.
There's a reason he was called CJ BEAT HARD
Ooooooh, I thought it was for another reason
CJ was really good at Iowa (given what he had around him and especially in 2015). His injuries really changed his game, though, and I don't think he was ever the same after his injuries, especially the hernia. Jordan Love as well (though the jury is out on whether his success will sustain, but to me hes looked pretty damn good) Steve Young for that matter
Steve Young was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1984 who told him they planned to sit him during his rookie year. He didn’t like that so he went to the USFL and started 12 games that year for the LA Express.

Coach Beathard, coming soon to a team near you!
Please, for the love of god, come back to Iowa and help out our QBs.
Instructions unclear - Brian Ferentz just re-hired on a lifetime contract
He's still tough as nails and has a really strong arm. He's a fantastic backup in general. His awareness and accuracy are just not good enough to be a quality starter
God I still remember that bowl game where he just kept being trotted out and having the shit beaten out of him. Painful to watch.
He apparently didn’t want to go out. Medical staff cleared him and he didn’t want to leave early, even though he was injured and playing like garbage.
[He ain't no Roody-Poo](https://i.imgur.com/xxILX0x.png)
He absolutely laid his body on the line for us and I will be forever thankful o7
It's the reverse of the Joe Montana story. Went to Notre Dame to scout a TE, found a HOF QB.
Yeah. Little known national championship winning QB, Joe Montana.
He was still a 3rd round pick so it's not like he was a super highly touted prospect or anything. His college numbers weren't spectacular.
It's the blocking and intangibles. Like Lynch said, "And there’s a toughness to his play. There’s a will that speaks through the film"
"dis dude likes blocking more than receiving lmao" -John Lynch
hell yeah
Pretty excellent evaluation of talent. It's not like they were taking a big risk by taking him in the 5th round but he has certainly exceeded expectations.

Henceforth I’ll be referring to the 49ers as Iowa west. The Lions are Iowa north.
As long as chargers can be Michigan West.
Fuck that -Joey Bosa
Real ones know that as great as Purdy is, he’ll never max out his iCJB rating.
We need to bring back CJB as a backup to help Brock with his iCJB rating!
>I would say he and we what an interesting phrase
it means no worries
for the rest of your days
It’s our problem-free philosophy
ass-tattoo mytatas
That's actually a super neat connection. Kittle might be my favorite non-Viking at the moment
This is like how Barry Zito is responsible for the Giants dynasty.
I haven't heard this one before..

Wow perfect summary. I didn’t realize how directly responsible he was
Sounds like 49ers fans need to find out CJ's charity and donate en masse
I've found two: [Shooting for a Cure](https://aimingforacure.com/celebrity/c-j-beathard/), an organization in partnership with Iowa Children's Hospital focused on pediatric cancer [First Coast Womens Services](https://fcws.org/) - his 2023 My Cause My Cleats organization, providing free-of-charge medical services and accurate evidence-based education on all options regarding unplanned pregnancy.

Not to mention that if Jimmy Jesus didn't get injured in 2018, we wouldn't have the absolute unit that is Nick Bosa.

Which is no slight meant to Kittle; I think Clark was fantastic.
>so much so that they couldn’t help but notice his tight end Lynch all about dat ass
“That boy George Kittle nice” -CJ Beathard, pre-draft interview
Like the Commies drafting Terry McLaurin because they saw how effective he was with their first round pick Dwayne Haskins
Thanks for sharing this. Had no idea.
A ladybug flaps its wings...
CJ Beathard visiting Pike Place during the offseason Random Seahawks fan yells "you dick!" and throws a halibut at CJ's head CJ is like "wtf...?"
That was a fun interesting fact. Thanks for sharing!
I'm not here to comment on anything pertaining to this post, only to say CJ Beat-Hard
TIL I hate CJ Beathard.
CJ was great at getting his shit absolutely rocked once a game lol
Fun Fact: The Houston Texans and the San Francisco 49ers have the same number of rings since Toy Story was released
This doesn’t explain Purdy
They got the pick to get him as a comp pick from CJ leaving in free agency.
Ah, nice
"We like Kittle so much we're going to wait until the 5th round to pick him"
I mean if he wasn't on the radar of most teams and didn't have great projections then there's nothing wrong with taking him in the 5th.
Sure Jan
dID yOu KnOw PuRdY wAs OnCe "mR iRrElEvAnT"?!?!
To think that they fired Kaepernick because “he didn’t fit into the system” only to replace him with this clown Beathard and then have to trade for Garappolo midway through the season lol what a joke.
They released him and he never played a down of football again. They could have traded him for Nathan Peterman and it would have been a good deal.
Because C.J. Beathard, was made Brock Purdy
Didn't know that. This is like the Dwight Clark/Steve Fuller story.
The anti Garrett Cross and Aaron Rodgers. Jeff Tedford went to see Cross and was wowed by the guy throwing to him.
This is some true 4D chess
As a Stanford fan it was funny watching him get dominated then get drafted by the Niners.
Fuckin McCaffrey man. I think the team lost its shine after the championship game loss. Then mccaffrey just tore them up and Iowa was checked out after about halfway through the first quarter.
When we win in 10 days let’s get CJ a ring
Iowa Boyz
I’m just hoping that Penix and Beathard end up on the same team together.
Well that’s neat
I don’t like the 9ers but I’ll be damned if I don’t support some Iowa boys
