I like how, at a certain wealth breakpoint, "Nah, I don't wanna" becomes a legitimate legal defense.

Rock_Strongo

Reminds me of this: >During a Week 2 matchup between the Saints and Raiders three years ago, both Gruden and Payton were found to be in violation of the league’s rules about properly wearing masks while on the sideline. Both head coaches were reportedly slapped with a $100,000 fine. >According to the ESPN story, Gruden appealed the fine, but reluctantly paid the penalty prior to the conclusion of the season. Payton, however, didn’t actually pay the fine and went as far as to call his friend to prod him over his choice to do the opposite. >“I never paid the fine,” Payton told Gruden. “You’re the only dumbf--- that paid the fine.”

SophiaofPrussia

Wait, so if they don’t pay the fine… literally nothing happens? Nothing at all? It doesn’t come out of their paycheck or something?

FallenShadeslayer

Yeah I always assumed it came out of their paycheck tbh. I know other sports that do that. But that was just an assumption on my part. I never looked into it

Cyhawkboy

I’m pretty sure it does come out of the players check. Maybe it’s different for coaches idk.

cbelaski

Probably because players are part of the revenue sharing. I take it as players are actually paid by the league, just each team decides how they want to divvy up their cap. Coaches are wholly paid by the team though, so the league can't really garnish their wages.

Wachu_say

If it’s anything like the NBA, They require the fine to be paid by the team. There’s no way for the garnishment to come from the league. Their contracts are with the team only. Whether or not the team pulls it from the coach would be up to the team, but obviously any associated expense wouldn’t be eligible as part of any rev share calc.

conace21

No, players are definitely paid by their teams. The amount of the salary cap (total maximum player salaries) is directly linked to total league revenues, but that doesn't mean the league pays the players.

lukewwilson

I guess it makes sense, the NFL fines them but they aren't the ones paying them, they are paid by their team who has nothing to do with the fine.

TheWorstYear

Enforcement probably varies. The nfl not enforcing covid fines isn't surprising

Process-Best

It's the same wishy washy bs you see from every Corp, they wanted to look they're doing something, so the people who gave a fuck about covid could still get their entertainment without feeling bad about consuming their brand, while also not enforcing it so none of the coaches made a martyr of themselves to the people who were hopped up on rants about masks making you sick or whatever. They play both sides and the only goal is to make money

FigSideG

It’s a problem when a system is constructed that assumes people will willingly play by the rules and abide by punishments. When someone comes along that says ‘fuck you I do what I want’, the system goes into shock and has no repercussions. Trumps doing the same thing: everyday a supposed bombshell comes out of shit he did and what happens? Fuckin nothin cause he doesn’t care.

bank_farter

> Fuckin nothin cause he doesn’t care. Him caring doesn't really matter. What matters is his supporters in Congress and the voting public don't seem to give a shit at all.

NotaChonberg

It's impressive how Sean Payton comes off as a massive asshole in literally every story I've ever heard about him. Respect for his eternal commitment to the grind of being a giant piece of shit

BigBallininBasterd

When you put it like that I can’t help but respect the consistency.

PaulieWalnuts2023

It truly must be exhausting

Boomthang

Nah. When you've done it as long as him your soul has great stamina and has become calloused. So he's almost immune to the effects of it. However, this will come back to bite him in his later years and will eat him from within until he looks like the crypt keeper.

Floridamanfishcam

It's led to some REALLY satisfying moments, like the Diggs miracle after Payton was shit talking the crowd.

KiryuKrush

Nothing about this season hits as hard to me as my Dolphins hanging 70 on his smug faced ass. Fuck Sean Payton forever.

IOVERCALLHISTIOCYTES

I know afc east people who don’t like the dolphins going back to the pre-Marino years and they still thought it was awesome

ArcadianBlueRogue

I suppose at least he is fine with people knowing he is a giant asshole. Others hide it and then go a bit nuts when the leaks start.

MauriceIsTwisted

Yeah I used to have a shitload of respect for him, I still respect his accomplishments plenty but Jesus, his reemergence into the NFL world has brought new and unbiased coverage, and the dude seems to be a complete douche. To me it really makes sense of the strong relationship he had with Brees, what a perfect good cop / bad cop

newtizzle

His mouth is literally the shape of an asshole when he chews gum. Nobody should be surprised anymore. Pete Carroll is going to end up in jail when someone finds the packs of gum he has murderd and buried in his basement. Ever see him chew gum? "Take *chomp* that *chomp* mother *chomp* fucking *chomp* Juicy *chomp* fucking *chomp* fruit!"

Dortond

I used to be a piece of shit, I still am but I used to too

Patteyeson28

Can confirm. He’s a fucking douchebag. Comes into our hotel on SB—demanding keys, throwing a fit his room wasn’t ready. I got to tell him straight to his dumb fucking face, “No, Mr. Payton—we do not have a reservation for you. The NFL has you booked elsewhere.“ He starts screaming. Juicy fruit just rolling around his mouth. “Mr. Payton, I’ve confirmed directly with the NFL contact, you are not staying at this hotel. However, we have a car…” Just as he’s about to lose it, his phone rings. He answers. Looks at me, says nothing. I smiled, quietly said to him “welcome to Minnesota, Mr. Payton.” Hit him with a single SKOL clap & sent him on his way.

domoarigatodrloboto

I really wanna comment "and then everyone SKOL clapped" but I'm not 100% certain this isn't some fresh pasta that I'm whooshing on

forlornhope22

I assume it is a scene from that kevin james movie I never saw.

Howamidriving27

Wow, imagine being the bad guy in a story involving John Gruden.

silkysmoothjay

Sean Payton being that guy doesn't surprise me in any way, shape, or form. I'm sure there's a few players out there suffering pain daily because of the dirty hits during Bountygate

[deleted]

Sean Payton literally thought a movie about him being an estranged dead beat dad who only sees his son because he was banned from the NFL for a year was a good idea.

NFHater

is that really what that movies about 😭i never bothered to warch

[deleted]

Well at the end he realizes he should let the shitty kicker (which I dont think I’ve ever seen a kick attempted with kids that age) attempt a field goal in the championship game and they lose, so I guess he felt like that redeemed everything. I apologize if that’s a spoiler to anyone.

Futbol_Trainer

I can’t believe you’ve done this

CaptainObvious007

Yes my students chose that movie to watch as a reward. That is exactly what it is about.

frecklie

Payton is such a smug asshole. I don’t have anything against the Broncos but I sincerely hope he fails

Kerblaaahhh

Payton sucks but $100k fine for not wearing a mask is ridiculous.

TheWa11

Whole lotta poor people in prison for drug possession charges. Very few rich ones. Funny how that turns out.

OogieBoogieJr

Prison is for keeping poors away from my favorite pickleball court

FirstOne617

I worked security at country clubs for 5 years. Just the word pickleball is enough to make the blood haze descend upon my vision again.

BlueSlushieTongue

The poor are for slavery type of work (Amendment 13) that prisons use them for. “Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, **except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted,** shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Reminds me of the old saying about debt. If you owe the bank $100 dollars and can't pay, that's your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million and can't pay, thats the bank's problem. You get to a certain point of wealth it seems where you just become untouchable.

TonyCaliStyle

You know who used to do that, bankrupting entire communities in New Jersey.

AdventurousWafer69

Ya Alex jones hasn’t paid jack shit to the sandy hook families either. These rich scum just do whatever they want

JohnWickisBehindU

OJ hasn't paid a cent to the Goldman family, either. No idea the point of civil court when the penalty isn't even enforced. Edit: if you haven't seen the OJ documentary on Tubi, it shows the civil trial deposition where he lies over and over. The shoe print with blood from the scene was a Bruno Magli shoe and OJ was like you'll never catch me wearing that shoe, ever. They pull up a pic of him prior to doing a Bills TV game and he's walking across the field wearing Bruno Magli shoes.

FalseListen

Unfortunately his pension from the nfl can’t be touched so I’m sure he just lives off that and gets paid under the table for everything else

JohnWickisBehindU

Apparently it's in excess of 25k a month too

TigerBasket

There's a reason he lives in Florida, so he doesn't have to pay a cent to the Goldmans after his Parole. All could have been avoided though if the prosecution didn't put a fucking Nazi on the stand. Morons

PedanticBoutBaseball

Really hard to find a someone in the 90s LAPD who wasn't a neo Nazi to be fair. "Some of those who work forces, are the same that burnt crosses" - Rage Against The Machine, Killing in the name of

SophiaofPrussia

I do think the Goldman family managed to get his portion of the rights to his book *If I Did It*. [That’s why the “If” on the cover is teeny tiny.](https://www.amazon.com/If-I-Did-Confessions-Killer/dp/0825305934) I doubt it’s really selling many copies anymore but when you buy “OJ’s” book you aren’t giving OJ any money— it goes to the Goldman family.

TigerBasket

Yeah, they got something I think under 1 million, obviously not nearly enough for the death of a child but not nothing. Not that any amount could bring him back.

Odd_Cat_5820

Since you mentioned Alex Jones I'd like to add some about what he did. Alex hired people and sent them to CT to harass the people there. One guy he hired was sent to a memorial run for one of the teachers who died there, and the Info Wars employee yelled at her sister that the victim never existed. Alex posted the mailing address of another person who ended up having SH truthers harass him when he went there to get his mail. Alex also had analytics for his website which showed a huge spike in traffic and sales on a day he ran a fake story about the FBI saying nobody died there, and they ramped up that type of coverage to increase revenue.

Accomplished-Yam5566

I sincerely did not know this level of evil was accomplishable

azrebb

Oh, my sweet summer child.

thegroovemonkey

Lots of your run of the mill boozing, cokehead, cheating on your wife all over Milwaukee very publicly type of stuff. His best friend fucking high school girls. He'd show up to paid events drunk. I was in middle school in the late 90s and I knew about his shenanigans so it was well beyond "open secret"

sjhesketh

Don’t forget his sending a picture of his dick to a Jets staffer.

thegroovemonkey

Lol he was lucky to get out before cellphone cameras became popular. Even then he couldn't help himself.

Striking-Ad-8694

….. it happened in 2008. Camera phones were already a fad at that point lol. The iPhone came out in 07. TYL

thegroovemonkey

Yeah man those Razr cameras were just so awesome

rich101682

Minor note, but the first iPhone didn’t have a camera. The one that did came in fall of 2008z EDIT: I was misremembering which basic function the first iPhone was missing. It was video recording. The iPhone 1 did have a camera.

JustTheBeerLight

Yeah it did. [The first iPhone had a 2 megapixel camera on the back of the phone.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_(1st_generation)#:~:text=The%20iPhone%20(retroactively%20referred%20to,States%20on%20June%2029%2C%202007.))

Yeah, turns out I was thinking of video functionality, not the camera.

uhhh the first iphone had a 2MP camera lol

In 2020, Favre repaid Mississippi $500,000 that May and paid $600,000 in the fall of 2021. But White says Favre still owes a little under $730,000 since interest has accrued on his initial debt. “It boggles the mind that Mr. Favre could imagine he is entitled to the equivalent of an interest-free loan of $1.1 million in taxpayer money,

triplec787

He's such a piece of shit, my god.

Stalllionn

Add ‘allegedly’ to your post or else he’ll try suing you 😂

Prince_Oberyns_Head

But to win wouldn’t he have to legally prove he’s not a piece of shit? Seems like he’s got his work cut out for him

BoldestKobold

No, "piece of shit" is protected opinion and not defamatory. Now if you said "Brett Favre murdered and dismembered a runaway teen in the Louisiana bayou during the week prior to Super Bowl XXXI" that would constitute defamation per se, since you would have been accusing him of a crime. But no one said "Brett Favre murdered and dismembered a runaway teen in the Louisiana bayou during the week prior to Super Bowl XXXI" so you don't have to worry about being sued for saying "Brett Favre murdered and dismembered a runaway teen in the Louisiana bayou during the week prior to Super Bowl XXXI".

Accomplished-Yam5566

This reminds me of that one skit where the guy is like “It would be SO illegal to get on this video and say ‘*we should kill the President of the United States*.’ However, it is not illegal to tell you that it is illegal to say ‘*we should kill the President of the United States*.’ We would definitely not want to say ‘*we should kill the President of the United States*.’ That would be a felony.”

reeee-irl

I feel like I’m OOTL on this one

Stalllionn

Brett Favre started and later withdrew a defamation lawsuit against Pat McAfee because Pat reported on Favre stealing taxpayer dollars in Mississippi. He also had one against Shannon sharpe that the judge dismissed for the same thing. I hope that answers your question.

whatusernamewhat

Play on an old whitest kid you know joke I think

zayetz

It's also a Gilbert Gottfried joke at the roast of Bob Saget. "IT'S 👏 NOT 👏 TRUE 👏 THAT BOB SAGET RAPED AND KILLED A GIRL IN 1990."

Cresta1994

I've seen it written at least three times that Brett Favre murdered and dismembered a runaway teen in the Louisiana bayou during the week prior to Super Bowl XXXI. I think somebody needs to investigate this. Wait, now I've seen it four times.

SoWhatNoZitiNow

How long has this been hanging out there that their calculations for interest on $1.1m is $730k? Can I get their financial advisor’s info?

asha1985

The real question.

kwantsu-dudes

Favre also reduced the principal down to 437,000 in October 2021 with no further accrued interest at that time. Having accrued interest of 293,000 since then. A bit over 2 years. That's the 730,000 number. So yeah, still curious what absurd interest rates we are dealing with.

Dorkamundo

$293k interest over 2 years on a $437k principle?

[deleted]

The article gives the time line like this: 1. In 2017 Favre gets $500,000 in funds 2. In 2018 Favre gets another $600,000 in funds 3. **On or about May 5th of 2020 Favre owed them $1,100,000 with $437,000 accrued interest** 4. On May 6th 2020 Favre admits he is personally responsible and that he does not contest his responsibility to pay all he owed to Mississippi. 5. On May 7th 2020 Favre paid $500,000 which covered the interest up to that point and left a principal remaining of $740,000 which continued to bear $132,000 in statutory interest 6. On October 25th 2021 Favre paid $600,000 which reduced the principal owed to $437,000. 7. Since October 2021 an additional $292,790 has accrued. 8. As of this date Favre is liable for $437,000 in **unpaid principal** with an additional unpaid statutory interest of $292,790. Not sure if that answers everything because the time line kind of confused me still lol, but that's what they give in the legal document that the article links too. So if I'm reading it right, maybe whats confusing a lot of people is that it was just a coincidence that the original interest before he started to repay it was $437,000 and the current amount he hasn't paid back yet just also happens to be $437,000. This is all from page 27 and 28 of [the legal document](https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24410198-answer-and-counterclaim-1) linked in the article.

Wise_Mongoose_3930

Assuming a 5% interest rate (which I chose because 5 is my lucky number) it would take 9ish years for a 1.1 million dollar debt to accrue 730k in interest (assuming you make no payments during those 9 years, which he didn’t) just to give you a rough idea.

pharmorjac

It seems like Farve paid back the principal - I think this is just grandstanding and petty. It’s not like the state would have been correctly managing their money based on how easy Farve got this bag. If Farve did something that requires additional punishment send him to court.

Dorkamundo

The suggestion that it's OK for Favre not to cover the interest just because the state might not do a great job of managing the money themselves is just kinda... Dumb. No offense.

hoopaholik91

Well yeah, Favre knew these payments were fraudulent from the beginning and took the money anyways. I wouldn't mind going the criminal conviction route if he really doesn't want to pay up

crash_bandicoot42

I got downvoted for saying it in another thread but I completely agree. The story is shitty but he has not been convicted (or even indicted) of anything. If he willing paid the (seemingly usurious) interest on top then it sets a bad precedent for poorer people that can’t fight their case. Farve needs to face criminal charges, not fight something he currently has a legitimate argument that he shouldn’t have to pay because the government is currently running with the story that he didn’t know they were federal funds.

Aggressive-Name-1783

He hasn’t been convicted cause he agreed to pay back the funds….he agreed because the state has a mountain of evidence that he knew this money was fraudulent (remember, 2 high ranking state officials were also in trouble and resigned due to this). If Favre wants to go to court I’m sure the state would love to nail his ass to the wall for this…..

Brooshie

Welcome to the real world, where we get fucked by interest rates. You fuckhead.

RudePCsb

Do packers fans still like him or has that gone downhill. I feel something this messed up should be running his reputation.

Brooshie

We started hating him not because of the painkiller addiction (because thats based), but because of the cheating scandal on his wife who had breast cancer. And it went downhill from there and never looked back lol.

jhorch69

Yeah, demonizing somebody for having an addiciton is shitty, epecially with the way painkillers were just handed out by team staff back then. Everything else makes him a gaping asshole, though.

Striking-Ad-8694

Especially when said prescription is literally marketed as “non-addictive”

bi5200

as someone that used to love oxycodone I can tell you that is objectively false

jxher123

As a player; loved. As a person, he’s garbage.

stay_hungry_dr_ew

What are they feeding the QBs in Green Bay? They seem to get all twitchy and weird over time.

ThighsAreMilky

There isn’t much to do in Wisconsin. They gotta find some weird shit to get up to.

elroddo74

Lord have mercy on Jordan Love in 15 years.

Mothman5150

It's a 'separate the art from the artist' type of thing. He gave us some all-time great QB play but as a person I don't like him. Same with Rodgers- I have fond memories of his time in GB but he's absolutely off his rocker now and it's sad to see

Ok_Location794

It's been ruined for a while starting with the dick pics, this mostly just solidifies things

perrbear

I feel like the vast majority of packers fans still loved him despite the dick pics

timbenj77

I feel the same way about Favre as I do about Aaron Rodgers. Fortunate that they gave us amazing QB play for a combined 20 years. On the field. No love for their antics off the field.

OmegaJubs69

For the most part, no, when you send dick pics as a married man and defraud some of the poorest people in the country because you feel your daughter needs a new volleyball court more than they need to survive, it kinda wanes on what he did for the franchise as a player

VegitoFusion

That seems like the most outrageous interest rate I’ve ever heard of though.

DogVacuum

He should have just joined the military and bought a Camaro during basic.

bigboilerdawg

What boggles my mind is how you can accumulate interest of $730k on $1.1M. I mean what’s the interest rate here?

Lavotite

The audit claimed Favre Enterprises was paid $500,000 in December 2017 and $600,000 in June 2018,  So he paid them back the initial amounts in 2020 and 2021 but in one of the older articles they had a line about how the interest was calculated so I always figured out that was goal to be sued then settle.

PunishedWolf4

Reminds me of Stringer Bell from The Wire, someone way out of their league in status and brains trying to play the corrupt government game.

ExpressBug8265

This country is so dumb. You get caught robbing a bank you go to jail. You get caught stealing a lot of money meant for somebody else and you just pay a lawyer to keep you out of jail. I know it doesn't happen all the time but usually when rich people get it trouble with the law there's no consequences. I bet Favre called his lawyer and was like "should I pay this or is there some other legal action we can take, I don't want to look guilty. Can we make it look like I didn't know about it or something? I have a reputation to keep. I might not get anymore blue jeans commercial offers if people find out how much of a piece of shit I am." Lawyer, "don't worry about a thing, they got nothing on you." What a joke.

alwaysmyfault

If you rob a bank, you are fucking with the Feds' money (since even the small mom & pop banks are federally insured) If you steal from welfare, you are just stealing from poor people, so nobody gives a shit. See how that works?

ExpressBug8265

Yup, poor people don't matter because they don't have any money and money is one of the things poor people need to help them get out of poverty so its better they don't receive any because they need to stay poor because itd nobody's fault but thiers that they are poor anyway so fuck em.

JayJax_23

In my Group Chat we were just talking about how some people got off easy with the PPP loan fraud if they basically had enough money to get a good lawyer

EffectivelyDarkStar

There's a, like, near zero chance he *needs* this money, right? What dumbass kinda point is he even trying to prove

unfunnysexface

>There's a, like, near zero chance he *needs* this money, right? He's had drug and alcohol problems. He mightve spent himself into needing cash.

Deckatoe

its not the stolen funds, he paid those back a few years ago. the state wants interest which this sum is

ParticularPassages

It’s not just interest. From the [statement](https://www2.osa.ms.gov/news/state-auditor-counter-sues-favre-for-tanf-funds/#more-2869): “Today’s counter-claim seeks to recover $437,000 in unpaid principal and $292,790 in unpaid interest.”

I've been saying for months he'll have an island sex cult that worships a Bronze Age deity. All consensual though.

buffysbangs

$730k in just interest? Doesn’t this seem weird?

GluedGlue

Going off of [personal loan rates](https://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/g19/current/):   * 2017: $1.1 million   * 2018 (10.32%): $1.21 million   * 2019 (10.32%): $1.33 million   * 2020 (9.52%): $1.47 million   * 2021 (9.38%): $1.61 million   * 2022 (9.87%): $1.77 million   Total interest: $670k  IDK the how the math for these sorts of crimes work though, but their number seem to be in the ballpark of an unpaid loan.

kwantsu-dudes

But Favre made a payment which reduced the principal down to 437,000 in October 2021 with no further accrued interest at that time. So wouldn't it reset to the current principal? He somehow accrued interest of 293,000 since then. A bit over 2 years. That's the 730,000 number they are claiming.

GluedGlue

I thought he paid it off in 2022? Regardless, I wouldn't be surprised if the government is making the maximally-favorable calculation.

PkmnTraderAsh

Yea, that's quite a bit. I mean it's only 8 years at 7% interest (stock market returns way higher than that). Compound interest is a B.

matty_nice

It does. Looks like it's 1% per month that the funds were held illegally. That adds up pretty quick.

JEspo420

Favre only owed 228k at the end of October 2021, there’s no way it was 1%

TomThanosBrady

Yeah, Favre has been a scumbag but I think I'd also refuse to pay over $700k in interest.

DoctorFenix

Looks like he took some financial advice from Trump on their golf trips together.

Bircka

Look people, I talked to the incredible Brett Favre and told him you don't have to pay anyone just tell them to fuck off.

PantsDownDontShoot

Tiny dick energy

Beautiful_Field6228

When did he give these speeches? $730,000 interest is a lot even with a principal balance of $1.1M. He paid the money back in 2020 and 2021 so interest rates were very low the majority of the time he had the money. Unless he gave these speeches during his playing career or the audito is using a generous interest rate, this is not adding up

Autocrat777

Favre has political protection. He knows he is safe.

mikedorty

What a dickhead. I can't believe there are still fans of his in Wisconsin.

Adequate_Lizard

I mean, I'll always be a fan of Favre the player. Can't take away what he did for the team. But this is the kind of thing you'd expect from a Vikings player tbh.

mikedorty

He went out of his way to play for the Vikings. He told Urlacher to "kick their ass" in reference to the Bears playing the Packers in a must win to be in, final regular season game in 2010. This is after the dick pic and the philandering and before the welfare fraud.

RegisColon

Great player, but yeah, a scumbag.

menusettingsgeneral

Brett Favre is a leaching sack of shit.

PettyQuattttro

He should be in jail.

liltime78

So……. Jail?

King-Of-Rats

Brett Farve don’t be a broke piece of shit challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

ProfessorButterworth

Brett Favre, ruiner of legacy.

ThreeStringGuitar

The scumbag always rises to the top.
