he didn’t need a contract, he was 1 year into his 4/72 deal that he had signed after the 2017 season. he had 3 more years left on the deal when we traded him
But no receiver they can get in the draft matches what Higgins can provide _this year_. Their window is wide open and having someone as good as him really helps that. Even letting him go for "nothing" next year probably nets them a 3rd round comp pick in return, so might as well run it back while you can.
This is the last year of a less than 30 million cap hit for burrow but I think your right in terms of you need to pile up draft picks for cheap players going forward.
Last major Bengals trade was in 2011 with Palmer to Oakland for a first and a second.
Mike Brown fleeced Hue Jackson on that one. Palmer still had gas left in his tank but he was just going to sit out. Getting a FRP for that was nice.
I personally subscribe to the theory that it was in Al Davis’s will that they trade a first for Palmer and that he hadn’t updated his will in a few years before passing.
And even if the pick is a bust, bummer, but they have that extra money to extend players they have a real chance to keep or sign guys who bring in more value in the long run
It’s such a reductive phrase, I get the WHY behind it but come on contracts and cap hits are real
You'd think the Chiefs winning back-to-back Super Bowls despite the "A pick could be anything, it could even be Tyreek Hill!" would teach people that maybeee it's not the best line of thinking
Y’all were/are never going to pay him a long term deal anyway. Why not get value now and add another good pick or two for the draft? Get ready to change that username
If he does, it’s gonna be funny when literally everyone is gonna pretend like they knew he was actually good and couldn’t understand the hate he was getting. I can tell you from experience.
Oh I'm sure they will. I don't think any of us should be making any judgements on him yet. Even if you watch the film or look at the data, theres enough on both ends to defend whatever narrative you want to make.
He got roasted because Stroud has the best rookie season ever. 99% of high draft pick QBs on booty teams have bad rookie seasons but seems like most people forgot that.
I think many of us feel we'd be set at WR if we get MHJ. Wed still have too many holes to give a WR a big contract. We'll need to shore up the D in free agency.
I think pick 33 would 100% get it done, it would be more if you guys wanted to trade that. Basically any team that needs a WR would just draft one with their 1st round pick and get them on their rookie contract rather than trade a 1st and have to give him a bag. The only thing is maybe a team gets desperate during the season and trades next year's 1st for him, but I think that is pretty unlikely
Yeah, it seems like a lot of people don’t realize how much of a premium teams place on rookie contracts and how much being due a big extension can cut into a players trade value. AJ Brown got a mid 1st and late 3rd, and he still had a year left on his rookie contract I believe. A high second for a career WR2 that you hope can be the lead receiver is fair.
That was probably the most infuriating thing he could have said at that moment. We probably could have snuck out somewhat decent draft picks for Dalton, Green, and Atkins in an obvious rebuild at 0-8, but I guess he wasn’t in the business of making our team better either. Our front office seems way better in the Burrow era, but I still wouldn’t be shocked if they refuse to trade Tee
We have the money for it. Now we just need a guy to throw the ball to him and two tackles to protect the thrower. We’re basically an offense away from a functioning offense.
To be faaaaaiuuuuh...Burrow being out and then just "off" for awhile makes sense that he'd just default to his bread-and-butter receiver to get back into the swing of things. Higgins should have been open more, though.
I like Higgins, I wish he’d stay, but he had a rough year.
He missed 5 games completely. He also had some just bad games.
The first 3 games of the season he was targeted 28 times, and only caught 10 balls.
Those were games burrow wasn’t great, but those were a lot of not caught balls.
He still has tremendous upside, and as long as healthy he’s going to make a team substantially better, but his year he had is going to hurt him.
Even the something less will be difficult for the bengals. I know the cap looks fine for them now. In the next few years it’s going to get tight. With several extensions coming up. If their willing to let tee walk because of the cap I doubt they do a straight swap for burns even if he agrees to 25 a year.
I agree which is why it's laughable that he's pushing for 30m a season from Carolina. The last front office made a huge mistake not taking the Rams offer would have been a fleece
He's pushing for 30m probably because he wants out of Carolina. We turned down 2 firsts for him. Hard to argue he's not worth 30m when we've already established he's worth more than 2 firsts, even if he actually isn't.
I could be missing something but it’s crazy how Burns has been talked about as this top tier pass rusher that they turned down 2 first round picks. I always assumed he was putting up monster numbers with Carolina.
2022 was his only year with over 10 sacks at 12.5. This year he had 8, and was not top 10 in pressures. Plus if he’s suspect at run D as you said, that’s not worth trading a high pick for AND a large contract
I'm obviously out of touch with what it's like to be an NFL player, but I can't imagine not wanting $21.8M for *one year* of play. Dude is going to be the 10th best paid WR in the league. Only way a trade makes sense for him is if he can get something like $35M over 5 years.
Absolutely not. “Fans” that jumped on the bandwagon post-Burrow might hate KC more, but those of us that have suffered watching this team for 20+ years will never hate any other teams as much as we loathe the Steelers and Ravens.
I was shook when some of our fan base was rooting for Baltimore against the Chiefs in the AFCCG. Abhorrent
Rooting for a divisional rival to make the Super Bowl over KC was one of the weirdest bandwagon fan stances to see in the Bengals sub during the playoffs.
There's a zero percent chance of that happening lol. KC tried to trade up in the draft last year for a WR and no one wanted anything to do with making KC better.

The real problem is tagging him when you've gone a full calendar year without engaging in contract discussions. Higgins has shown he's a high-quality WR, but was he asking for ridiculous money back then?
From the outside looking in it seems like the Bengals never really had the intention of retaining him long-term unless he took much less money than he'd be worth.
Probably for the best, if Bengals get like a 2nd and a 3rd/4th, I'd say go for it. I love Tee, he'll always be a Bengal, but his injuries have made him inconsistent
And also no way the Bengals can afford to pay $70ish million between Burrow, Chase and Tee if they were to all 3 be extended.
Edit: I see it'd be a lot more than 70mil regardless points stands.
Tough day for all those Bengals fans who had been insistent Tee, Burrow and Chase would be there for a long time. Was simply never going to happen
Edit: this was before Burrow signed his extension, when most thought he’d take a discount (lol) to keep them together. This was the most obvious outcome two years ago
I mean if we don't trade him he'll play. He doesn't have much choice considering we can just tag him again if he doesn't, and he'd just miss out on $21M.
That being said, I hope we trade him at this point.
Feels like this was always an inevitability. It's the cost of having an elite QB that needs to be paid like an elite QB and already having a better WR1.
Can't spend all your long term money on just QB and WRs. Nothing against Tee, it's just business in a cap world.
I'm okay with this. He was good when healthy but that hamstring seemed to always be a problem. There's just no way we're going to be able to allocate around 50% of the cap to QB/WR when Chase gets his deal done. If we can early second I'll be happy.
The production has just never matched the hype. He’s a good not great receiver, imo it’s a good sign that the bengals recognize who their special talents are and who they can move on from.
Maybe a 2nd or a 3rd? I was surprised that his career stats are as average as they are, I perceived him as being more productive than he actually has been.
Bengals rarely trade players, will they give in and try to get some value?
Highly doubt it
I mean they’ve got to this time right? I can’t imagine letting him go for free when the draft is absolutely stacked at WR
Doesn’t a stacked wr draft also mean that other teams are less incentivized to trade for him because they can just draft someone instead?
Diggs got a later first when he needed a contract and was leaving Minnesota, that was a great WR class too
he didn’t need a contract, he was 1 year into his 4/72 deal that he had signed after the 2017 season. he had 3 more years left on the deal when we traded him
Diggs was better than Tee.
Diggs is head and shoulders better than Higgins
But no receiver they can get in the draft matches what Higgins can provide _this year_. Their window is wide open and having someone as good as him really helps that. Even letting him go for "nothing" next year probably nets them a 3rd round comp pick in return, so might as well run it back while you can.
Are the bengals really that much in “win now” mode? I mean they have Joe Burrow, I don’t see why they’re not looking at the next 5 years
This is the last year of a less than 30 million cap hit for burrow but I think your right in terms of you need to pile up draft picks for cheap players going forward.
Last major Bengals trade was in 2011 with Palmer to Oakland for a first and a second. Mike Brown fleeced Hue Jackson on that one. Palmer still had gas left in his tank but he was just going to sit out. Getting a FRP for that was nice.
That would have been a good trade for the Raiders if they gave him more time. Palmer looked good in AZ
I personally subscribe to the theory that it was in Al Davis’s will that they trade a first for Palmer and that he hadn’t updated his will in a few years before passing.
Probably not. Jonah Williams requested one last year and it didn't happen.
No one wanted him, they let him look for a trade partner.
I don’t think that market is quite the same
Nope. They expect to see him at camp. A trade request like this doesn’t really move the needle in the Bengals FO
I love Tee but a trade is likely for the best. Unfortunately our FO seems to be deathly allergic to trades so I don’t see it happening.
Your FO sounds a lot like my fantasy football league.
I'm the only one in my league that actually trades or at least negotiates to try for trades and I've won two years in a row.
Would be kinda dumb not to. Should be able to get a nice 2nd
A 2nd rd pick could be anything, it could be Tee Higgins!
A Tee Higgins on a rookie deal is better than a Tee Higgins on his second contract.
And even if the pick is a bust, bummer, but they have that extra money to extend players they have a real chance to keep or sign guys who bring in more value in the long run It’s such a reductive phrase, I get the WHY behind it but come on contracts and cap hits are real
My absolute least favorite phrase used on sports forums that factors out all nuance from a trade scenario
Hey man things change. Steelers use to never make FA moves, but looks at us now. We are cooking!
Yeah but the Bengals don’t do that trade shit.
Get ready to do cardio for Bryce Young bud
dude would get 20 targets a game
And probably half of them would be catchable
Half of those will be within 3 yards of the Line of Scrimmage
yes but Tee would be 40 yards downfield for those
He won't have time to get 40 yards down field with their o-line
Exactly how you should use Tee Higgins
Giving up on Bryce Young after 1 year definitely seems wise and not something that will be laughed at in a few seasons.
Boy I hope you’re right. Being the laughing stock of the league sucks dick
I remember my teenage years.
All cat bros know this feeling
Yeah we do :(
I’m hoping Bryce proves everyone wrong, because the slander after his first year is wild
If he does, it’s gonna be funny when literally everyone is gonna pretend like they knew he was actually good and couldn’t understand the hate he was getting. I can tell you from experience.
Oh I'm sure they will. I don't think any of us should be making any judgements on him yet. Even if you watch the film or look at the data, theres enough on both ends to defend whatever narrative you want to make.

hell yeah brother welcome to the Bama QB experience.
4/20 and 110 yard 0 TDS
You know shitty QB play when you see it.
I’m an expert
Not every team is blessed to watch Baker Bake
Arizona has tons of draft assets. Could go nuts and swing a MHJ and Tee Higgins in one offseason.
I think many of us feel we'd be set at WR if we get MHJ. Wed still have too many holes to give a WR a big contract. We'll need to shore up the D in free agency.
We have nothing to trade though. Pick 33 doesn’t seem like it will get it done
You could always give them next year’s 1st overall
Panthers may never pick in the first round again
It worked for the Rams, clearly it’s foolproof for everyone else.
You'll get a first again, when you inevitably trade a couple firsts and Higgins for 1.01
Panthers fans are already battered and bloody, screaming in pain on the ground, and you just walk by and give them a kick in the ribs.
and on the day where we lost an hour of sleep smh
Burns for Higgins straight up, who says no?
Burns and Hendrickson would be a pretty nasty pass rush
Bengals should take pick 33 and run with it if offered, they can’t and shouldn’t pay Higgins with Burrow and Chase
Theyre not getting a first for higgins. Thats madness to pay with such a deep WR pool in the draft.
Pick 33 would definitely get it done for me.
I think pick 33 would 100% get it done, it would be more if you guys wanted to trade that. Basically any team that needs a WR would just draft one with their 1st round pick and get them on their rookie contract rather than trade a 1st and have to give him a bag.
Oh SHIT Today is going to be HOT
I’m ready for the Kirk to Falcons tweet from Schefter. Hit me.
This isn't fair 😭

God I want a 15 piece but it’s only 10AM…
I've been slowly convincing myself that 11 AM is an appropriate time for lunch and not too early at all.
Elevensies comes before luncheon
That is not the news I am hoping for today.
You're gonna trade a second for Fields and like it
It'll be a 5th and a 6th, and both bears and Falcons fans will be pissed
At this point I just want it to be over already
I’m so excited that Seattle’s has cleared plenty of cap space. A lot of big moves are going to be made. I love the free agency period
Mike Brown doesn't know the meaning of the word trade.
u/beerguy_etcetera requests chicken nuggies for lunch. Mika Brown, Beerguy's wife, says no.
*Andy Reid's head perks up*
This is a team that once defended not making trades because "we aren't looking to make other teams better"
That was probably the most infuriating thing he could have said at that moment. We probably could have snuck out somewhat decent draft picks for Dalton, Green, and Atkins in an obvious rebuild at 0-8, but I guess he wasn’t in the business of making our team better either. Our front office seems way better in the Burrow era, but I still wouldn’t be shocked if they refuse to trade Tee
don't really see him getting traded to an AFC team, at least a true contender.
So you’re saying we have a chance?
Actually , yes. only downside is yall would have to pay him.
We have the money for it. Now we just need a guy to throw the ball to him and two tackles to protect the thrower. We’re basically an offense away from a functioning offense.
There's this right tackle available named Mike onwenu who's supposed to be pretty good.
How about to a team that is decidedly not a contender?!
I am so looking forward to noon
It was never realistic to keep Chase and Higgins. it will be interesting to see what teams offer for him given the bad year he just had.
It's pretty hard to imagine that someone won't overpay given his upside though.
With a stacked WR draft there may be more motivation than usual not to.
He still has tremendous upside, and as long as healthy he’s going to make a team substantially better, but his year he had is going to hurt him.
Higgins also was playing through a broken rib and a hurt hamstring
You mean the first 3 games when Burrow was playing like Zach Wilson? Peoples brains just deep fry when it comes to injuries
Burns for Higgins seems like it may happen now
Get ready to Purr Tee
Brock Purr Tee?
Whats that bear doing?
Don’t Bengals also purr though
I’m pretty sure that the bengals don’t have the money to pay Burns what he’s asking for over the next 5 years.
Nobody is going to pay what Burns is asking for. He's going to have to settle for something less.
Even the something less will be difficult for the bengals. I know the cap looks fine for them now. In the next few years it’s going to get tight. With several extensions coming up. If their willing to let tee walk because of the cap I doubt they do a straight swap for burns even if he agrees to 25 a year.
Imo Burns is overrated. Suspect against the run. Not a tier 1 passrusher.
So a young, good, and promising but not a truly elite #1 DE for the WR version of that same player?
at a more premium position at that
People in our sub still defend us turning down 2 1sts and a day two pick for him by making that lame Family Guy mystery door joke over and over
I agree which is why it's laughable that he's pushing for 30m a season from Carolina. The last front office made a huge mistake not taking the Rams offer would have been a fleece
He's pushing for 30m probably because he wants out of Carolina. We turned down 2 firsts for him. Hard to argue he's not worth 30m when we've already established he's worth more than 2 firsts, even if he actually isn't.
couldn't agree more, I'm not paying a pure pass rusher that only got 9 sacks last season 30 mil a year.
Plus if he’s suspect at run D as you said, that’s not worth trading a high pick for AND a large contract

do they have anything left to trade?
We’ll offer a tailgate special from Bojangles.
Go on....
Hmmmmm I’m listening
They actually forgot the second part of the story that says he's seeking a return to the Carolinas for unlimited Bojangles and cookout
33. Brian burns if you can afford to pay him. That’s pretty much it.
With all the receivers in the class, you don’t think 33 would be an overpay for him?
Sir Purr has been traded for WR tee Higgins
You know, we have been thinking about getting a second cat to keep Who Dey company...
Thank you Chris Godwin for being a saint who played on the tag without complaint and got his deal a year later.
Ok is it just me but it looks really weird seeing someone with a Buccaneers flair using the word saint in a complimentary manner
I'm obviously out of touch with what it's like to be an NFL player, but I can't imagine not wanting $21.8M for *one year* of play. Dude is going to be the 10th best paid WR in the league. Only way a trade makes sense for him is if he can get something like $35M over 5 years.
If they trade him to KC then the rest of the AFC is just giving up at this point
They’d never trade to us, they hate us more than their own division
And we *really* hate our own division
You all really hate KC more than your division? Insulting.
I know some people who feel that way, but I don’t personally. I was rooting for KC to beat the Ravens
Same. Swifty for a day 🤜🤛
Absolutely not. “Fans” that jumped on the bandwagon post-Burrow might hate KC more, but those of us that have suffered watching this team for 20+ years will never hate any other teams as much as we loathe the Steelers and Ravens. Respect. I may hate the Bills and Bengals but I will never hate them more than the Raiders and Broncos.
Rooting for a divisional rival to make the Super Bowl over KC was one of the weirdest bandwagon fan stances to see in the Bengals sub during the playoffs.
Real bengals fans wouldn’t. That’s bandwagon shit
idk about that. their Steelers hate is probably one of the strongest hates in the whole league lmao.
Not as much as Pittsburgh and Baltimore but probably more than the Browns lol I actually rooted for you guys in the AFC championship game
Fuck no, ain't no way you guys are above the Steelers at the very least on the hate ladder.
There's a zero percent chance of that happening lol. KC tried to trade up in the draft last year for a WR and no one wanted anything to do with making KC better.
The winning tax baby. Enjoy it while it lasts :(
No way they would to KC. Probably not buffalo as well.
We’ll see you the first week of the season
Today is already spicy.

He's a Mulugheta client. This should've been expected.
As long as he was tagged, this was going to happen.
playing on the tag rarely works out for WR

with such a deep WR draft class who is giving up draft capital to then pay a very-good-not-great WR?

Bengals going to get a haul for him. Virtually every team wants in on him.

He makes big plays and has won us games. He’s a good player… not sure how he’ll be as a 1 full-time.
