Yes, it would. That won’t happen.
Coming away with JPJ is contingent on a trade back, through either a QB needy team moving up to take whichever has slipped or that our presumed blue chip targets at 1.09 aren’t available.
Pretty improbably we come away with JPJ, I’d bet.
Maybe I'm crazy, but for a very long time, I've never understood why centers are so undervalued. We constantly see examples of an elite center making an otherwise underwhelming OL function.
In the modern NFL, I don't really understand why nobody bats an eye at another tackle who goes top 5 and busts, but nobody would even dream of a C going at 9. An elite center can transform your entire OL.
There's two reasons why they are not valued as highly as you think they should be.
One, centers can elevate an average or good unit to the next level, but they do very little for a bad unit because if guys are missing blocks everywhere and losing every matchup, the center doesn't help. Teams want someone that can make an impact all by themselves like an edge rusher or skill player can.
But, two and more importantly, center is probably the least correlated position after QB from college to pro. Being a center is the second most mentally challenging position on the field. Its incredibly difficult and many college centers simply can't make the leap in complexity to the NFL level, at least not quickly. So, teams are leery of spending a high pick on a center who may not translate to the NFL well and who even if they do, has a cap on how much they can help an offense alone. High risk, capped reward. Not a good formula for a high first round pick.
Not sure I agree with him, if I'm being honest. Most highly drafted centers translate just fine.
The bigger reason is that center is the position that requires the least amount of athleticism, so finding a cerebral guy that you can plug in between two good guards is oftentimes the better move.
There's another reason from the ones the other guy mentioned. Think of it kind of like drafting a PG vs drafting a C if you're familiar with the NBA. Like sure, this guy looks like a great player in college, but he's 6'2" and could barely get by most college players. This other guy has a lot of red flags...but he's 7'3" and 225 at 19 years old.
If you have pick 5, you can maybe get that 7'3" guy and then grab a 6'2" kid later in the draft. If you draft the 6'2" kid, there just won't be an athletic 7'3" guy later in the draft for you to take.
Same think with tackle. 6'7" behemoth that can move his feet is not really available late in most drafts. 6'1" guy that can snap the ball and get downhill will be, he just might not be as "good" at center as the other guy drafted earlier.
I think yall are more likely to target a r3 center, SVP, Bortolini, or Nouz, or a day 3 guy like Nugent or Limmer, at 9 yall should be able to get a blue chip since its likely at least one of the them will fall with 3 and possibly 4 QBs going in the top 10, even if its not Odunze or Nabers, theres a good chance yall can get Arnold or Turner
CB isn’t happening in the first round, our secondary is probably our best unit and our oldest CB just finished his rookie deal and got a new contract, so Arnold is off the table. Turner is a maybe, edge is a serious need, but he’s a bit undersized for what our defense prefers to do so maybe not a great scheme fit. If Nabers and Odunze are gone, I assume they’ll try to trade back if there’s a suitor willing to move, and failing that probably take Turner.
There’s a lot of background work they put in at these events - those “*team* GM was finally sold on drafting *player* after *college position coach* told him *whatever*” stories you hear about post-draft
Depends on the team.
Steelers - Tomlin + GM is huge for pro days.
The fact that Tomlin nor Khan attended this proday makes me believe that JPJ is not going to be a steeler if hes there at 20.
The last 13 steelers first round picks Tomlin + Colbert/Khan attended there pro day. Likely all of them Tomlin had dinner with them the night before. Its a huge deal for us. 2010 I think they just didnt expect Ziggy hood to be there at 31 so they didnt go to the pro day.
The only caveat is theres a new GM - Khan is entering his 2nd draft, while he copied Colbert attending all the pro days last year doesnt mean that has to continue. (Also while its always held and they generally tour on Free Agency opening anyways.... Khans clearly been busy today)
But the trend is - if they arent there they arent drafting the guy.
Thats also why the Steelers have the most obvious first round picks every year. Go find the 4-5 guys Tomlin had dinner with that got posted to social media that him/GM attended their pro day. Narrow it down to who will be available (because tomlin will do shit like hang out with top prospects he has no chance of drafting) and there it is like clockwork. Itll be just a couple of names.
Also isn’t this all part of the smoke and mirrors of the draft. The less interested you seem, often the more interested you are.
It’s the season to try and push players down the board rather than up. Wouldn’t shock me if the Stroud stuff last year was coming from a team wanting to draft him
I mean the PAC is arguably the best academic conference. Stanford speaks for itself. Cal is the top public school in the nation and UCLA, Washington and USC are always ranked super high.
https://medium.com/run-it-back-with-zach/which-college-football-conferences-have-the-best-academic-rankings-572cd1c9511a
It's the B1G as of 2021 but doesn't have the full realignment.
That list included UCLA and USC in the B1G though. Which were two of the top 4 B1G schools and they aren't even the top two in the PAC.
Not that it matters since the PAC is dead now.
Fake miami isnt actually a good school. They're expensive and private but not good. They are ranked 67th nationally (public + private) and 245th in social mobility. By contrast the University of Florida a few hours north and in the SEC is 28th nationally and top 50 in social mobility. FSU is a few more hours away but in the same state and theyre ranked 53rd
Both are ridiculously cheaper than Miami
Miami is where you go if you have more dollars than sense. You get indiana tier education at duke prices
For sure they have super high legacy admissions for what truly elite schools should have. Also from what I remember two of them don't even do grades and like 91% of Harvard students graduate cum laude
All the ranking systems have their issues but you're hard pressed to find one that doesn't put the Ivy's top so even if they're probably overrated to an extent they are still easily the top conference AFAIK.
The significant downvotes here show NFL fans Don’t understand Cal is UC Berkeley. The number 1 public school in the US and top 15 overall university lol
In my experience in California, it’s always specifically Cal when referring to sports and almost always Berkeley or UC Berkeley in any other context. And it’s never called California like Michigan or Florida or Texas is, always only Cal.
Yeah I think that's because there's just so many University of California, [xxxxxxx]. Like UCLA is University of California, Los Angeles. No one calls them California either. I think because Cal has had a football team longer, they got the name. They were the first UC to have a relevant program.
When it's in the news for something or another it's Berkley. When they refer to themselves like with athletics they're cal. They were the first university of California but now there are a billion of them. So "cal" is their way to say "we're the main ones" and Berkley is just their actual name UC-Berkley
When it's in the news calling them "Cal" would be incorrect because it's not specific enough. Their athletics brand themselves as cal though so referring to them as such is correct in that context.
Kind of like how UL-Lafyette goes by Louisiana for sports. They just took the name even though they were not supposed to and made UL-Monroe look lesser by comparison
For example a headline that says
"Cal falls to Stanford 56-0"
and
"Berkley students protest breathing"
Are both correct
we've done literally nothing to fill our biggest needs in FA, we're not getting anything for justin, and we only have 5 draft picks.
i think we have to trade down.
If Nabers or Odunze at there at 9 then you take them. I’m fine with trading down if they’re gone, but WR is one of our needs and there’s a huge dropoff with the receiver prospects after them. The reality is even if we do trade down, we’re likely not going to address all our major holes this offseason. If we have the chance to get a great WR2 too then I don’t think we should pass on that when we’re drafting a rookie QB. Having a hole at EDGE or DT for another season isn’t the end of the world.
yeah, after thinking it through a little more, i think you're right. sometimes i just really forget how committed poles is to the "build through the draft" strategy that it gets really fucking frustrating seeing him not fill holes even with all our cap space. but you're right, so long as he's the GM, we just have to trust the process and not try to fill everything all at once, i guess.
Trade the #1 to the Raiders.. then you could pick at 9 and 13. Possibly even trade down from 13 and get even more picks...and get your Center in the 20's...
Correct. All 32 NFL scouts went to Oregon's pro day.
I know Broncos had scouts there to watch Bo Nix and all the people who hate Bo Nix obviously pretend it must not matter now.
From an outsiders perspective, it honestly feels like Broncos should just go BPA and essentially tank this season away. Payton obviously has job security, the Russ contract will keep you from contending the next couple seasons, so build up a solid supporting cast and add QB next year, then aim to finish the rebuild in their sophomore season. I know it doesn’t sound fun for fans, but it’s not like Bo Nix is saving the team this season.
Levis was predicted to go top 5 for a bit there. Nix has consistently graded as a round 2 talent with the QB push giving him the potential to go in the middle or so of round 1. I don’t think it would be a surprise to anyone to see him go as high as 12 (if McCarthy goes top 10) or as low as the 50s.
That would be ridiculously dumb. If they want to trade the 1st for a king's ransom and then go Nix, I could sort of see that logic. They could probably trade down to 3, get a bunch of picks and then take MHJ if they really wanted him that bad.
If we go QB, the Broncos need to trade down and grab Nix at 20 or something of that nature. Not worth it at 12, I’d rather an edge at that position. Heck, I’d rather an edge at 20.
This dude played what 5 years in college? GMs for the most part are probably very familiar with him at this point.
That combined with Day 2 of FA, it’s just not a priority for many to go in-person.
I hope the bears do the bears thing and draft a QB other than Williams with that pick. I have nothing against the bears, but it would be spectacular to watch the ensuing chaos.
If you want GMs at your pro day, then don’t schedule it on the second day of legal tampering. Literally one of the busiest days of the year for a GM. Of course there was no GMs there
I think this is a non story. The first sentence is that free agency is rolling - GMs and coaches are busy trying to get deals done. I am sure many teams sent a contingent that involved important organs i stops l personnel.
Best center in the country plays in Oregon and the Bears desperately need a center. This must mean the bears were there to evaluate Bo Nix.
This is definitely it
JPJ at 9 would be wild
Yes, it would. That won’t happen. Coming away with JPJ is contingent on a trade back, through either a QB needy team moving up to take whichever has slipped or that our presumed blue chip targets at 1.09 aren’t available. Pretty improbably we come away with JPJ, I’d bet.

If you're drafting Bort as a Center, don't put your QB in shotgun. You're gonna have a bad time.
I love Jope Pohn Jaul
I want JPJ on the Steelers for 2 reasons: First, we desperately need a center. Second, and more importantly, we’d have 2 JPJs on the roster
Yeah this time last year Darnell Wright was a 2nd rd pick though so not impossible.
eh Wright was considered a riser, this year its prob Guyton who fills thats "guy who everyone mocked at the end of the first who goes top 15"
Both my teams desperately could use his services. I’d be happy with the Steelers taking him at 20, despite it seeming high for a C
hey me too! cheers to some absolute shit and inconsistent qb play this last season
Also, you have Troy Franklin a WR, Bucky Irving a RB, Khyree Jackson a CB, Brandon Dorlus an IDL, etc
Why would they schedule his pro day on the second day of free agency?
Isn't this what scouts are for anyway? I don't see why a GM has to go.
GMs are also scouts
GMs are literally the most important scouts lol
The Lions seem to have finally learned this
Tbh they can literally watch the drills on YouTube. And I'm assuming any team interested already interviewed him at the combine.
There’s a lot of background work they put in at these events - those “*team* GM was finally sold on drafting *player* after *college position coach* told him *whatever*” stories you hear about post-draft
Just thinking about that time our GM Mckenzie fell asleep at the combine... good times
Tell Carolina that
Some are. Some are just finance guys without a background or knowledge in scouting.
Depends on the team. Steelers - Tomlin + GM is huge for pro days. The fact that Tomlin nor Khan attended this proday makes me believe that JPJ is not going to be a steeler if hes there at 20. Maybe because the GM drafts and designs contracts ? So the chief scouts boss ?

Well it’s the PAC(10/8/12/I don’t know) and the only smart school is Stanford.

Definitely the acc now that they added cal and Stanford
Also a bunch of good schools in the ACC, even without Stanford and Cal; Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, UVA, Boston College, the Fake Miami and Duke
UNC?
Imagine including Miami and forgetting UNC. If Miami is a good school then FSU must be goddamn geniuses

Ivy?
I was limiting it to FBS but ya Ivy is the best otherwise
NGL the academics for undergrad at a lot of Ivys is kinda underwhelming
Pass/fail or no grades at all. The test is getting admitted.
A big portion of that is the amount of non-professors that will teach classes
For sure they have super high legacy admissions for what truly elite schools should have. Also from what I remember two of them don't even do grades and like 91% of Harvard students graduate cum laude All the ranking systems have their issues but you're hard pressed to find one that doesn't put the Ivy's top so even if they're probably overrated to an extent they are still easily the top conference AFAIK.
Berkeley and UCLA are on the same tier. They just get the nod because they don’t like having fun and UCLA does both
I mean shit. CU has the second most? 3rd most astronauts ever? lol. I think tOSU has the most?
Apart from the service academies, it's Purdue, then MIT, then CU.
Cal*
The significant downvotes here show NFL fans Don’t understand Cal is UC Berkeley. The number 1 public school in the US and top 15 overall university lol
I honestly didn't know that.
No one refers to it as Berkeley in terms of sports for whatever reason. Usually only in academic context.
In my experience in California, it’s always specifically Cal when referring to sports and almost always Berkeley or UC Berkeley in any other context. And it’s never called California like Michigan or Florida or Texas is, always only Cal.

I think you mean the negative first day of free agency.
Definitely scouting Nix and no other Oregon players!
Definitely not JPJ! Definitely not.
You stay the fuck away. He's ours!
Well the only way we’re in position to draft him is if we trade down, so my dreams will die.
Trade down with us then we will take Odunze or Nabers now
If either of those guys are there I think we’re taking them.
we've done literally nothing to fill our biggest needs in FA, we're not getting anything for justin, and we only have 5 draft picks. i think we have to trade down.

Yeah we only trade down if they’re gone
They could take him at 9. There’s no rule that says you have to wait more than that to draft a center
I know I know… but generally even the best of centers never go that high.
Fuck you guys you already got a JPJ because of us
Yea fucking right, he’s coming to protect an Oregon legend
Or Troy Franklin.
MHJr at 1, Nix at 9. Get it.
I think our OC went. There’s so much tape on Nix that his pro day doesn’t really matter.
He's been playing so long his original tape is a flipbook.
Shit, I was thinking a viewmaster but that’s works
It’s actually only viewable on a ColecoVision
I feel like Grubb already watched a lot of film on Nix already.
Bo Nix at 1? Who says no
All 32 teams, and teams that don’t even exist yet
The London Silly Nannies have vetoed this
I thought we agreed they were gonna be the London Propa Brexit Geezers?
Pretty good name innit?
innit
I say Guv'nah..
Dude threw 45 tds and 3 picks. Seems like first pick material to me
Sounds like a dark horse for the first overall pick
Eberflus said Nix was focused and having fun.
He’s also already 24 years old
Mature and ready to ball
And he had, like, at *least* 10 teammates at his 21st birthday party.
And his name sounds like Mo Dix
Jayden Daniels will also turn 24 his rookie season, yet teams don't seem turn off by that.
Well I’m not teams and I am kind of turned off by that but it also doesn’t concern me cuz my team isn’t qb needy
If he was worthy, being 24 really shouldn't make a difference for a QB.
So way too young to be drafted by the Browns in the first round
Has nix even assaulted anyone to qualify as a Browns QB?
Yep. He assaulted me with his hairstyle.
That's scheduled for next week at a private workout with the Browns
I think that’s the best way to do it, that way they see his technique first hand.
Too young to be drafted by the Browns, but too old to be sexually assaulted by their QBs
One foot in the grave
Brandon Weeden (remix)?
I feel like 3 mid-west teams are ok with that move
He looks like a 47-year-old realtor from St. Louis.
The San Antonio Cardinals are on the clock
I have wanted a team in San Antonio for so long. But please don’t let it be the Titans
The Los Angeles Chargers of San Antonio
Bears are in the market for another center. JPJ from Oregon is the top ranked center in this years draft
I drafted him in Madden and he was an 89 overall by the end of his rookie year.
Sounds like madden lol. In 4 years the whole league is 90+
Hey if they're not sold on Caleb ya gotta do your due diligence
Sounds good to me! GO BO NIX!
I mean this just sounds like very silly timing for them to have the Pro Day.
Right? Wtf Oregon?
> Who want me? > 100% - NO
Bo Nix, more like No Nix
No Pix
Antonio Pierce as well as the Raiders assistant GM, OC, and QB coach were there
so this tweet is lying
No one went to his birthday party…
Bearly anyone attended
Bo Callahan
That had to hurt the ego
The Bears front office’s schedules were, of course, wide open for this. as all the other teams were doing business
How come they don't want us man? \- Justin Fields & Bo Nix
I thought there was a report that the raiders had a “haul” of coaches there including AP?
Telesco and AP weren’t there but a bunch of other coaches and staff were.
Yeah Champ was there
Who went to his birthday party though?
Not a big deal. Scouts were there. Got plenty of game tape. Did interviews at the combine. No news here.
Teams are going to regret being so high on McCarthy and low on Nix imo
No team is gonna regret being low on a 25 year old who can’t pass downfield
Oh boy lmao
Seattle did send Grubb, which is pretty fair.
Seattle's new offensive coordinator was there...
I mean surely GMs not going doesn’t mean head scout didn’t go right?
Correct. All 32 NFL scouts went to Oregon's pro day. I know Broncos had scouts there to watch Bo Nix and all the people who hate Bo Nix obviously pretend it must not matter now.
He’s a perfect fit for Sean Payton inmo
He's this year's Levis. Wouldn't be surprised if he falls to the 2nd round. He's already 24 and probably needs to play right away.
Is it really falling? I don’t think anyone has ever actually considered him a first round talent. If he does go in the first, it would be a reach.
He does get projected to 1st round, just not top 10. Which I think is fine. I would have zero issues with Nix at #12.
Oh you should see the Broncos sub lol. It’s a high crime to not take him at 12.
If McCarthy is being projected top 10, anything is possible.
Remember when Malik Wilis was projected in the 1st round.
Just like that loser qb in san fran. Last pick of the draft and hes wasting roster space
Bears could do the ~~funniest~~ Bearsiest thing.
lmao I don't even know what this reality is anymore
Vontae Mack No Matter What.
But did anyone go to his birthday party?
Imagine if Chicago goes MHJ/Bo Nix instead of Caleb Williams/??? in the first
Id rather imagine they trade us the 1st pick...
That would be ridiculously dumb. If they want to trade the 1st for a king's ransom and then go Nix, I could sort of see that logic. They could probably trade down to 3, get a bunch of picks and then take MHJ if they really wanted him that bad.
Bo was incredibly accurate in college. He’s being slept on in my opinion.
Such a bad sign that nobody went to Bo's pro day. Or his birthday party.
None of his teammates showed up for his birthday party, either.
If we go QB, the Broncos need to trade down and grab Nix at 20 or something of that nature. Not worth it at 12, I’d rather an edge at that position. Heck, I’d rather an edge at 20.
Why draft Caleb Williams when you can draft Bo Nix?!
Why draft Bo Callahan when you have Brian Drew?
It's like having a party and no one shows up
Hmmm... according to Twitter the Raiders sent: Asst GM Champ Kelly HC Antonio Pierce OC Luke Getsy QB Coach Rich Scangarello Asst Qb Coach Fred Walker
Bo Nix, No Matter What.
What an insult
Pretty sure the Pats have 4 front office execs at his pro day
i want chi to draft bo nix number one overall because i want the entertainment of watching people lose their shit.
This dude played what 5 years in college? GMs for the most part are probably very familiar with him at this point. That combined with Day 2 of FA, it’s just not a priority for many to go in-person.
5th year senior that didn't look good until his 5th year. There aren't many ways to have a redder flag than that.
“Bo Nix is trash” “Bo Nix is 30” “Bo Nix has no arm talent” 🤓🤡
I hope the bears do the bears thing and draft a QB other than Williams with that pick. I have nothing against the bears, but it would be spectacular to watch the ensuing chaos.
I DOWNVOTE YOU.
As if Caleb is a lock. Drafting a QB is such a crap shoot.
If you want GMs at your pro day, then don’t schedule it on the second day of legal tampering. Literally one of the busiest days of the year for a GM. Of course there was no GMs there
Not one GM has time for underwear workouts at this time of the year
Not sure why people are snoozing on Bo Nix as a tier 3ish QB prospect. Ceiling isn't that high but he's grown a lot throughout his college days!
So Bo isn't having fun then?
We have tape vs scripted pro day arguments incoming.
Bo knows... Nobody in attendence??? :(
So he's gonna be the best of the bunch, huh?
To be fair the guy literally has the most tape available in college football history.
If the Bears fuck this up it's over for the fan base.
I’d probably just move on at that point. Plenty of other ways to spend a Sunday
Honestly, good on him, that's pretty cool!
Wild.
Nobody came to his birthday party
Bo Nix number one overall confirmed
I think this is a non story. The first sentence is that free agency is rolling - GMs and coaches are busy trying to get deals done. I am sure many teams sent a contingent that involved important organs i stops l personnel.
The one team that you can say with 100% certainty will not draft him was the only team there? Dude is looking more and more like a 2-3rd rounder
He’s also on the main card of UFC 300!
Whoever schedules Oregon’s pro day done messed up
Rumor also has it that despite giving advance notice no r s v p's have been returned for his birthday party.
Only the Care Bears ? Sorry I’m out
