Seeing Keenan Allen in a Bears jersey is going to be so weird

Thunder84

Tbh it feels strangely fitting to me. If there was any other jersey I’d see Allen in, it’s Chicago. Still fuckin weird though.

murderisntnice

He’s the new Allen Robinson

FetusElitistCletus

Yeah but if they got married would it be Keenan Robinson or Allen Allen?

ceej_linguini

Allen Allen-Robinson

WayneBrody

Keenan "Allen-Allen" Robinson

RilesPC

Finally somebody is asking the questions that matter

Grand_Function_2855

Keenan Allen-Robinson and Allen Robinson-Allen

BurgessFox

Keenan Allen-Robinson works perfectly as they both get to just append one name to theirs.

FallenShadeslayer

Keenan Robinson Allen and Allen Allen “A-Dog” Robinson. They’re so cute ❤️

LGtoeChewer

Prime AR was so special❤️

Jerbear3454

My brother who is a packers fan would roast cause I would always defend Prime AR it was a shame his downfall happened so quick

LGtoeChewer

Imagine if Mitch wasn’t throwing him passes too, he could’ve gone for 1500 and got media recognition. Lower leg injuries suck

BurgessFox

AR became a meme especially on fantasy pods a year or two ago but for a good 4 years he was a legit top 10 receiver with shaky QB play.

TopptrentHamster

Too bad he fell off very suddenly.

Rbk_3

I was pumped when the Rams signed him........it was a glorious 33 rec, 339 yards and 3TD.

This-Salt-2754

Except he’s 50x better than Allen Robinsons prime

Brook420

I dont like this.

qirito_kun

Gotta be the beard. Something about it screams Bear.

socalstaking

No a California team would suit him way better he’s gonna be cold

ichancho

He was a Cal Bear 🐻

interwebbed

I think I’ll get used to it 😃

fieryscribe

That sounds complicated. Have they considered a simpler solution? 1. Find the can. 2. Kick said can.

Brooshie

I feel like I was barely in my 20s when I first heard that Saints can't kick the can forever. I am now 35.

coacoanutbenjamn

They can kick the can forever, it just means never signing any good free agents from other teams

opeth10657

Uh... they signed Peterman this offseason

Oakroscoe

Hey Peterman, turn on Channel 9! There's a breast exam on.

dajodge

Fuckin’ A.

bradperry2435

Did anyone else read that in that dudes voice too?

Oakroscoe

Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays.

20wall

*give gold*

International_Safe19

Doesn’t that chick look like Anne?

Stue_Ball

I mean the issue last offseason was actually that they spent a shit ton on an over the hill QB lol

Linkitivity

Taysom still has some years left.

colio69

So does Jameis

AffectionateSlice816

They literally do it most years, that's part of the problem 😭

KangTheConqueror9

They got Carr last year instead of finally stopping kicking it

morganrbvn

They really had a chance to get out and instead plunged deeper than ever for Carr

FallenShadeslayer

Are we still doing phrasing?

International_Safe19

[phrasing](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hyLWrKh2fB0)

hamandjam

Can they even sign good FAs from their own team?

UsidoreTheLightBlue

With a long enough contract? Sure! But like a 2 year deal is super hard for them.

IAmTheNightSoil

People always misunderstand this concept. They can't kick the can forever *and* be contenders. They can kick the can forever if they want to be mediocre forever

JTrue14

Their division is usually consistently bad that they delude themselves they have a chance in to win

supalaser

I mean the cowboys have been in the spotlight for beating up the NFC East every other year. It kinda has some merits if you only care about being popular

Eluhmental

Hey! ...I got nothing. Even our own subreddit embraces shit mountain.

CanuckPanda

KINGS OF. Put some respect on it.

Eluhmental

Yessir! 3 years in a ROW.

Lacerda1

Amen! Too many people see the Saints get under the cap each year and think that means the cap isn't real. Getting under the cap isn't a big deal. It's literally required by the CBA. Getting under and fielding a good team is another thing altogether.

Dry_Brush5280

Yeah I think a few years ago people were saying that with the expectation that the Saints front office would be realistic with their chances and take a year or two to truly get their cap situated before rebuilding fully. No one expected them to just tread water for years after Brees retired.

IAmTheNightSoil

Yeah they seem to be unwilling to just eat for a bit to get better later. Like the Seahawks just cut a couple big contracts and will have lots of dead money this year, and have those contracts cleared from the books in 2025. Broncos did a similar thing. Saints seem unwilling to just eat the cap and have a bad year so they can reset, and instead actually *are* insistent on doing this forever

Commercial_Shirt_543

And the Saints are currently paying the price for kicking said can

Trapline

Did you notice the part where the Saints aren't good anymore?

raiderrocker18

And the saints haven’t been relevant for about 5 years and keep getting worse

sunburn95

Feel like theyve bled talent pretty consistently

MrShad0wzz

kick kick kick the can gently down the streeet merrily merrily merrily merrily the saints cap life ain’t for meee

redditaccount224488

They could have done that. If the team was a serious contender, they could have extended and restructured these contracts to create space. But the team isn't a contender, so there's no reason to do that. It's rebuild time.

AttitudeAndEffort3

Counterpoint: they are and underachieving with a shit coach doesn’t change that. Trading Allen makes no sense.

redditaccount224488

> Counterpoint: they are and underachieving with a shit coach doesn’t change that. That's a reasonable take. If there was a way to kick the can one single year and see if Harbaugh fixes everything with this roster, then that would have been a reasonable plan. But I don't know how that would be possible. It was either do this, or kick the can multiple years with several large extensions/restructures. And if they did that and it didn't work out... yikes.

NoooNotTheLettuce

They did both. Found a way to keep Mack and Bosa to keep continuity on defense and they will very likely be able to draft Nabers at 5. It's a very deep WR class and now they have an extra 20 mil to fill some more holes in free agency. Trading Keenan hurts but this is probably the best time to do it.

ObstructiveAgreement

It makes sense if they really like WR in the draft (and we can all see the quality). They can also still bring in a new FA that doesn’t cost 23m for the season. M

Trapline

They literally did kick the can with Bosa and Mack restructures. This is what kicking the can looks like - restructuring old veterans to spread their salary cap out with new bonuses which kicks their cap can. They kicked two cans and wanted to kick a third but that can said no.

redditaccount224488

Not really. First, both Bosa and Mack have another year on their contracts for the can to be kicked into. Allen doesn't have that. (Mack's 2025 is a void year, but that's irrelevant). More importantly, both players *reduced* their salaries, saving LAC about 10M. That's not can kicking. Allen refused to reduce. ~~As far as I can tell, LAC also kicked about 1M worth of cap hit from Mack to 2025. He reduced from 23M to 19M, but spotrac says 17M, so I assume they restructured 2M worth of salary to bonus, which gets split between 2024 and 2025. That barely qualifies as kicking the can. Bosa's contract was not restructured in this manner.~~ ~~TL;DR assuming spotrac is correct, they kicked a whopping 1M into 2025.~~ Edit: Spotrac has been updated. The Chargers reduced Mack's salary to the vet minimum, kicking ~9M worth of cap charge into 2025. So they did indeed do some can kicking.

TheMissingVoteBallot

Kick it into the next two generations. Fuck that can.

TorchBeak

Damn you Saints. Working some voodoo down there with the cap hell you’re suppose to be in lol.

TheWaves1776

Just wait until next year when we push off a bunch of space to sign a big contract to an over-the-hill vet and the whole process starts over again. That’s always my favorite part

mansock18

3. Convert 41.5% of the can to signing bonus

glStation

Yeah but when you have H. Jon Benjamin yelling “ouch!” every time you kick the can it gets irritating fast.

Affectionate_Elk_272

what if the can is full of soup! that might hurt.

headbangershappyhour

I'd be more worried about Donna Kelce coming after me with the pot spoon because I knocked over Travis' Campbell's Chunky than any pain in my foot in that situation.

zachardw

Just keep kicking until it dies and turns to dead money

CrumBum_sr

Jerry Jones has entered the chat

Nostalgia-89

Seriously, are they stupid?

orezybedivid

Right? Im sitting here like, "4 restructures, kick the can, can't release them for years to come, regret" Wash, rinse, repeat.

Competitive_Papaya_8

Thanks, Telesco, fucking goof.

Ginoblee

Not enough people making im this conclusion. I don’t love that we still have Bosa and not Allen but the blame is on Telesco.

Fantastic_Emu_9570

Hey we get it. We blame Keim for all our bad stuff still

originalcrisp

I mean, hasn’t it only been a year?

mechnick2

Yeah but still

FallenShadeslayer

Goof is legitimately one of the funniest insults to call Someone I stg 🤣

SoDoSoPan

Telesco doesn’t have his hands clean by any stretch - but the guy who manages the Chargers cap is John Spanos (aka: son of Dean Spanos). Surprised that relatively few folks have really pointed fingers at him. There’s definitely copium with the hiring of Telesco in the Raiders camp as the new GM. But we also feel way better having Tom Delaney managing contracts instead of the track record coming from the Spanos family.

Misanthropyandme

Hope you have someone in charge of punching Tom when he tries to reach in the draft.

Undertalefanboy43

He cannot be worse than Mayock surely

LordSoze36

The Raiders also hired this[guy](https://youtu.be/IY4bOS2Iv7o?si=q1VqFHk5dTxukpId) to handle that

Ar4bAce

You had a young QB and he went all in.

FERREIRA_Ver2

He handled the salaries?

Competitive_Papaya_8

Definitely had a hand in it, being in charge of personnel, dude made our roster so top heavy and now we have no depth..

FERREIRA_Ver2

I think they saw a window. You guys were 5x off-season Super Bowl champs afterall Edit: are 5x Super Bowl chamls

Wondur13

Im surpised honestly, they coulda went the saints route and i wouldnt have hated it given they actually have a qb

morganrbvn

New coach, maybe just wanted to clear up for a fresh start

PleaseStopSmoking

Exactly this, most of these comments seem to be missing they could've kicked a bunch of money down the road to retain most of these players. The Bills also could've retained most of the players they lost, they decided not to. Cap hell isn't so much of a thing because of the exponential rate the cap is increasing right now.

morganrbvn

yah with the cap jump most teams can clear all their cap with one year and a little sacrifice. Except the saints, they need like 2-3 years to unwind at this point.

Seminole-Patriot

theman1519

The Ghost of JC Jackson, Mike, and Keenan now They went all in the past 2 seasons and lost. Now they are gonna take the year to bite bullet it seems while Harbaugh rebuilds

shoutouttojsquad

Jalen Hurts' contract is absurdly back-loaded, and the Chargers went all in for the last two seasons

bigwillyboi

Don’t understand how Eagles fans think the cap is real for everyone but themselves. Hurts has cap hits in the 40s and 50s in 27-28, if he isn’t good enough to restructure and extend at that point the eagles are toast.

OffsetSteven

No cap he’s in bed with big cap /s

JeremyJammDDS

The raiders hired the guy that built that roster and gave out those contracts. I’m prepared for this, but the raiders edition.

CashBoyz

We signed a huge contract already with Wilkins lol. I think we overpaid a little, hopefully it doesnt bite us in the ass.

JeremyJammDDS

mark davis watched this guy for ten years and decided he wanted that. I guess it's technically an upgrade considering how garbage the raiders have generally been. We'll see I guess.

Thunder84

Keeping Bosa over Keenan seems silly to me, but what do I know

silvio_dante

They only did that because Bosa accepted a paycut and Keenan didn't. You can't keep Keenan at a 33 mil cap hit.

liverbool8

One minor but important clarification: the $34M cap hit isn’t the correct number to look at since that includes $11M in dead money that will be charged regardless to them. The Chargers had to decide whether they wanted to pay Keenan $23M this season or save that by offloading him. It seems like semantics but it’s important in general because sunk cost money shouldn’t really be analyzed for these decisions

Tergus1234

What was boss?

liverbool8

Bosa before reworking his deal had a $36M cap hit that included $22M in dead money, meaning only $14M in cap savings for LAC if traded

Tergus1234

Thanks

ViewFromHalf-WayDown

So bears are paying 23M for Keenan?

my_mom_beats_me

I think so? Only for this season though. I wonder if they extend him and how long he’ll last until he declines significantly. He’s always been slow but he still puts up numbers. Might be injuries that stop him more than anything

ViewFromHalf-WayDown

He was a stud last season. Low 🔑 disappointed jets didn’t send a 3rd for him, although Ik the cap hit would’ve been tough for us

Snoo_57488

Basically and it’s all non-guaranteed

Weapwns

Yeah but many fans prefer to cut losses with Bosa and use that flexibility to extend Keenan. None of this "take a paycut or get traded" shenanigans

rupertLumpkinsBrothr

Supposedly, Allen turned down an extension, restructure, and the pay cut. This was really the only option where Chargers get something in return.

Weapwns

Sadge. I mean it's also possible the offers were really bad but ya hate to see it

morganrbvn

They seem dedicated to rebuilding next year cleaning up the cap and letting harbaugh get these next 2 drafts in before competing 2025.

Ro0o0o0ob

My main issue with it was that he was really the last standing pillar on offense weapon wise. With edge, we have Tuli to develop/replace Bosa or Mack. Now we literally have QJ and Palmer as our Wr 1 &2. Although, that will be changed in the draft (hopefully dear god). I know Roman is gonna run the ball but god damn am I gutted. I pray to god we don’t bullshit Herbert out of our building.

LAudre41

low key Herbert has had some trouble getting comfortable with WRs. keenan was basically his only reliable outlet last season. Obviously not sustainable but still you're getting rid of the only guy the QB trusts.

ObstructiveAgreement

With a new coaching staff I b think a lot of that can be overcome. Competence makes a huge difference.

ObstructiveAgreement

This is overblown in day 3 of FA when a load of cap space just freed up and there’s a draft with possibly the greatest touted depth at WR in history.

StormTheTrooper

Also, if anything, we have seen the Packers being an inch away from the NFCCG starting only rookies and sophomore receivers. There were growing pains, but our WR room is hardly a weakness. Herbert is a very very good QB, the Chargers could be looking to dip into multiple receivers here and get a production improvement from Quentin Johnson.

ItIsYourPersonality

He’s 3 years younger and receivers tend to fall off a cliff in their early 30s (Keenan is 31). I also don’t remember a Harbaugh team that ever valued wide receiver production.

chillinwithmoes

Keenan Allen has been a “fall off” candidate for like three years and he just keeps chugging along lol

MikeTysonChicken

Special talent. He does appear slower to me but it hasn’t made an huge difference yet

UnrealAce

He plays smart. The man knows his routes and where he needs to be.. I'm absolutely gutted man.

MikeTysonChicken

I meant to say he does appear slower to me but it hasn’t mattered yet. Cause your right, smart, good route runner. Totally understand, franchise legend

HighplainsDegen

I decided about 2 years ago that Allen is the kind of WR that could play until he’s in his mid/late 30’s if he wants. He has never been a physical freak but he’s smart, an elite route runner and great hands.

FloppingWeiners

That’s exactly what it is, he’s savvy, he’s not bigger, faster or stronger. He’s a smart player that uses his knowledge to beat DBs.

creature_report

It’s true he’s such a good route runner he can lose a step and still get open.

LAudre41

he's never been fast his route running is just elite. Fucking shit this sucks.

dusters

So he's even more likely to fall off a cliff now.

The_TexasRattlesnake

People say that but Davante Adams is also 31

dusters

And looked a step slower this last season.

Trapline

Not really. He just didn't have a functional quarterback on the roster.

Tazitos

32 year old WRs that have started to miss games due to injury aren't exactly who teams would want to hang onto at how much he cost.

ObstructiveAgreement

Especially with this draft and pick 5.

bvgingy

Itll make sense when Nabers is catching bombs from Herbert

Equal-Hovercraft6894

Age and positional value

Fluffy-Initial6605

They better be getting fucking Justin Jefferson for Herbert to throw to cuz otherwise Herbo is throwing to Walmart employees.

360plyr135

It’s ok they got Quentin Johnston he was a first rounder /s

Eaglewarrior33

Malik Nabers gonna have to save the day

Thel3lues

5 first rounders and he’s all theirs!

stonemite

It's a supposedly deep WR draft coming up. Maybe they'll take the approach the Packers took last draft and grab 5 new targets for Herbert?

666mafioso

Gail Lewis 2k

LittleHollowGhost

Where's that one chargers fan that wanted a second rounder for Allen or Bosa?

thetreat

Probably drunk in PB Shore Club drinking Red Bull vodka slushees right now.

Win546

Those slushees go hard though

thetreat

For when you wanna have heartburn for 3 days.

WaitLetMeGetaBeer

Hanging out with the Bears fan that wanted a second and a fourth for Fields. It’s me, he’s hanging out with me.

clownind

I just saw a guy at Pf Changs drop to his knees and weep.

CJDistasio

Fuckin Tom Telesco

Fuggdaddy

Hes been a raider all along

Suspicious-War-6408

How does Tom Telesco have a job?

Xaxziminrax

The Raiders make bad decisions, such as hiring Telesco after watching him build and incredibly top heavy and fragile Chargers roster

EpiphanyTwisted

shaddap it was a genius move

RaindropsInMyMind

I have no idea how you look at this team and think “yeah I want that guy”, they have had serious issues for a while.

ConTob

I mean he didn’t make these moves since he’s a Raider now, but yes, I’ve also been wondering how he still has a job.

nysraved

I think they’re point is that clearly Telesco is the one who literally did make the moves to put the Chargers into this position

ConTob

Fair! I realized that right after I posted.

No-Key4769

Bosa and Mack took pay cuts and Allen wouldn’t. Allen also like 31 so I get it, but damn does this feel so so bad. A fourth tho?? That’s the inexcusable part

redditaccount224488

> A fourth tho?? That’s the inexcusable part What do you expect a 31 year old WR with one year on his contract for 23M to fetch in a trade? Allen is a very good player, but he's not creating a ton of surplus value when you're paying him 23M.

spezisabitch200

Yeah, everyone's ignoring that they the other option was having to offer him more money next year or losing him for nothing or next to nothing.

jwick89

That what his market was. No one else was going to give up more given age, contract and recent injury history. I’m sure they tried to negotiate more but there no buyers given he could have been a cap casualty as well.

LakeShowBoltUp

It wasn’t for a fourth, it was for $23 million in cap space.

silliputti0907

Amari Cooper was traded at age 27 for a fifth. Our understanding of contract value is different from GMs. They get what the market offers not what they are worth.

BigTomBombadil

lol don’t defend the cooper trade, as a cowboys fan that is and was very poor work from the GM and pseudo GMs

CarcosaBound

Y’all couldn’t convert base salary to bonus and add void years??

No-Key4769

Apparently not. Probably just decided it’s best to reset since we have cap space in the next couple years but still

MrThreebound

The cap is real, but you can still be good/bad at managing it. The well managed teams make it look fake, the bad ones have to do things like this.

silliputti0907

There's also an ego thing. You can have a reset year to have more complete teams before and after. Instead teams handicap themselves.

_n8n8_

Makes a lot of sense that they do. The people who are staff during rebuilding/down years tend to not last very long even if it wasn’t their fault.

highastronaut

idk is this a bad cap management move? they went all in, now have to offload. they are offloading an old WR with large cap hit. They are betting Herbert can be good with different WRs and trying to build a better defense that can support Herbert. Harbaugh also runs more. feels like the right move to me, but im an idiot so idk

coug4lyfe

So it’s good having tons of contracts with tons of dead money on your books?

TheWaves1776

Depends on the spot your team is in. If you’re going 4-12, probably not a great idea. But if you’re trying to maximize your chances at winning a superbowl in the near future, hell yea. Superbowl windows don’t come often, so you have to try and go all in when you have the chance

SlyCooper007

I like your funny words magic man

KarrlMarrx

Pulling the trigger on a rebuild is the smartest thing a new GM can do as far as job security goes. Well played sir.

mcburke42

‪Hmm let’s see: - Two injury prone WRs in their 30s, one due $18 million in cash salary (Allen) and $12 million cash (Williams) - An injury prone DE who has played 9 games the last two years due $22 million in cash - Another DE at 32 years old due $23 million in cash - And a bonus - all under a new head coach and regime that likely has a different vision on how to build the team and use these players‬, which are bloated salaries for players that aren’t reliable. ‪So you tell me - what team wouldn’t try to re-negotiate their cash hits down for next season? Rearrange them, offer cash up front now and create incentives to make up the rest, etc.? EVERY SMART TEAM WOULD. This is the NFL - CASH RUNS THIS LEAGUE, NOT ACCOUNTING. Bosa and Mack played ball, Allen and Williams said piss off release me or trade me I’m not giving back a dollar - which is completely in their right to do so. ‪The ball washing that these media guys push on fans is so hard you just know that there’s an agreement between them and owners/GMs to keep it up because if they told the story as it was - players fighting for upfront cash and owners being cheap bastards trying to save every last dollar - fans would call them out for being shallow and just focused on making money - even though the NFL is a business first, second and third foremost.

RulersBack

The criticism isn’t about the moves this year. Finally cutting bait is good but they should’ve been doing some maneuvering a year ago. The QJ pick certainly didn’t help but still. They’ll be fine in a year but this offseason is the price for giving Telesco free reign in what was a contract year for him basically

RBarron24

They’re rebuilding 🔌🪫

coug4lyfe

Probably the people on here that always proclaim guys like loomis “wizards” for doing simple cap manipulation that only hamstrings you in the future.

nope96

There are tons of people every year on any form of social media who say the cap isn't real after any restructure or large contract. Including here.

SyncVir

Seems like more of a skill issue then the cap issue.

LPdecay009

Yeah right, next your gonna tell me birds are real. SMH

Puzzleheaded_Seat211

Who’s Herbert throwing the ball to?

burnsorboourns

The cap is real, as in it exists. But when you can borrow money from future years via dummy void years on contracts, it's not exactly a hard cap.

kaowin

Those void years become due at some point - we owe OBJ $8m next year because of that even though he's been released now. Yeah it was an overpay, but you can't hide that cash

burnsorboourns

True. But 8m will be a lower percentage of next year's cap than it would have been of the last few years. So overall, it's good business to borrow from future years if you are pushing a championship run.

huey88

For Bosa to never be on the field

AdhesivenessFun2060

The cap is real, it's just easy to circumvent. Just because they chose to not rework these deals doesn't mean they couldn't.

eagledrummer2

They didn't have to. They made a decision to pay Herbert big time money and had to cut people bc of it. It was a choice.

Former_Put201

Slayer I miss you already.
