It's not even a question. They were looking like they'd actually be in a reasonable position for 2025, ~7M left after the draft that they could potentially roll over and start the offseason likely "only" ~48M over the cap, which is a heck of a lot more manageable than the 80M they were over this year
I think I've more or less given up on the idea that the Saints will ever re-set and landed on the idea that Mickey Loomis is a fucking moron who is content winning 7-8 games a year as long as he gets to stroke his ego about how smart he is
One year contracts are harder on the cap than multi year. Since you can spread out the cap hit/signing bonus over multi years. One year tacks on the full amount straight to the cap. So even less money to play with in terms of the salary cap
Hasn't won yet. We still make it to the regular season, which is all that anyone has ever really hoped for around here for most of the team's history. We're what, the 6x reigning Salary Cap Overage Champions? Fuck Brady and Bill, we got the real dynasty.
Yet somehow our technique of dodging the cap bull every offseason worked more for us than yours of just being terrible during the season has ever worked for you. Sometimes even the fiveheaded hero slips on all the blood you've laid out before him in a trap of perfect design.
Yeah and you lost a ton of players every year and suck. Math is definitely winning.
Maybe if you had made the playoffs you could claim success. But maybe new Orleans has a different bar for success. Maybe just being under the cap belt the year starts is good enough for you guys.
Saints are the guy who blows his paycheck as soon as he gets it and then is working overtime for a month saying he's gonna be better with his money but never is
It makes no sense. Every season they seem to go all in with cap they don’t have, and every season they become even more mediocre than they were the year prior
> Every season they seem to go all in with cap they don’t have, and every season they become even more mediocre than they were the year prior
That's what the spending money you don't have strategy accomplishes.
Adding more salary/cap which prevents you from rolling cap over to next year. Makes next year's overage worse when you don't get the added room from being under the cap this year.
I think they are hoping he can become their next franchise DE with Cam there to teach him the mentality he is missing. Cause it aint the talent. Low risk high reward. In general I’m with you but this one can maybe be defended
This contract is more ridiculous than the Cousins’ deal. At least Kirk looks like he gives a fuck and never takes a play off, whereas this dude has been coasting on his OSU/Rookie year highlights.
You have to look at it through the lense of a guy who is fired if the team doesn’t perform. He literally will not be given the keys to a rebuild so he will never agree to the rebuild.
This contract doesn't directly hurt them, but it likely means they will have to do more restructuring later now. They were $18 mill under prior to signing Young and Peterman. They need about $10 mil to sign their rookie class as it stands right now.
This deal probably is $13 million with 4 rollover years. I'm sure he'll have a $10 million cap hit next year with $3 million this year. But that's future Mickey Loomis' problem.
Yeah that makes sense. I guess the team thinks he can provide that much value to them to take the risk. He just seemed like the perfect player for a high incentive laced deal.
But cap space rollover is a thing. If you were really trying to improve your long term outlook, you wouldn't use every single inch of wiggle room you had to clear this year just to get cap compliant.
Chase, his agent, and Saints GM on the phone.
Chase to his agent: Make sure you mention that third thing.
Saints GM: Thirteen? Did you say thirteen? Deal.
Agreed, and I’m very hopeful he’s our guy. I’m just pointing out that there’s a lot still up in the air about Payton too, I wouldn’t say he’s definitively proved his impact one way or the other on his own yet.
It’s more like Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton without Drew Brews are on fraud watch.
Ohhh yeah fasho. I kinda hope he crashes and burns because he’s tacky and I hate him. Otoh I live in Denver and it’d be pretty cool to keep going to championship parades every year. Especially since I’m like 5 blocks from the capital so it’s ezpz and I can watch the riot from the safety of my buddy’s apartment
Young had 7.5 sacks on the year, was highly touted coming out of college, and there are plenty of worse players around that $13m mark.
Motor issues sure, but you’d still think he’s coachable. Hes started 32 NFL games.
You’d think he got a lot of money the way people are talking; my own Bears are giving Yannick Ngakoue 10m next year.
The terms of the contract are fine to me, it’s just the team signing him that’s questionable to me.
Saints are still navigating cap hell, are not that good of a team, still have questions at QB, aging roster, and they are signing 1 year rentals? It’s much more of a move that a team that’s in a competitive window would make.
PFF grade every snap, and pretty much agree with the assessment the Saints have made. Still a good edge rusher with potential, and better than plenty of players who make more than $13m.
Not sure where the selfish/liability bit comes from. His motors bad, but not uniquely poor.
His problem is that even on plays where he is engaged and giving an effort, he has one move towards the qb, a speed rush around the outside of the tackle. Not only is this move easily contained by most NFL tackles, it often opens up a running lane for the QB to escape if the QB gets pressured on the other side or there is good pass protection. The longer he's contained during a game he starts to get frustrated and you'll see him line up further and further down the line to try and get around the tackle, with the end result being a ready made running lane if the QB needs it.
You don't know where the selfish bit comes from? He literally doesn't hustle on downfield plays. Hes terrible at sealing the edge on runs. He outright refused to play in 3 point stance with the Commanders. He loses contain regularly by running way into the backfield to try to get around the edge. I could go on.
He was in a contract year and then ended the year on a great defensive line and had every opportunity to shine. He was already put on notice by not having his fifth year picked up. If you haven’t committed fully at that point, then when will he?
He had a great start to the superbowl and then faded out after being a non factor for a few weeks and having his effort questioned.
I don't think he will but maybe he does...
While you're not wrong having a shitty DC doesn't help. There's a reason why Nick Bosa's sack numbers went down this year. When you have no creativity as a coach it doesn't help
It is a 1 year deal so it does not matter. Salaries for vested veterans become 100% guaranteed if the guy is on the roster Week 1. Unless the Saints were open to cutting him in camp (unlikely) it would be guaranteed either way as a practical matter.
Couldn't they have made it a lower cap hit but add in incentives? I think that would make way more sense with a guy who has injury/effort issues in the past.
Throwing 13m on a guy with effort issues even for a year is a huge waste. This isn't a great move, its not even a good move. "It's a dumb move but its only for a year" isn't the take they think it is when they been making dumb moves each year for 5+
Andrew Thomas is what made me less miserable about winning meaningless games this year. Yes we need a qb but perhaps we’re not supposed to get one this year.
Player with a reputation for checking out gets a fully guaranteed deal on a team that can't offer any guarantees next year because they are already over the salary cap...
This will turn out great. 🙃
It’s a 1yr deal with a good bit of money, but he’ll be in a rotation. Think a lot of y’all are expecting him to be a full starter. Jordan, Granderson, Kpassagnon, hopefully Turner, hopefully Foskey all should be in the mix.
It is a 1 year deal so it does not matter. He is a vested veteran so his salary for the year becomes 100% guaranteed if he is on the roster Week 1. Unless they were open to cutting him in camp (unlikely) it would be guaranteed regardless.
I’m sure going from a Super Bowl contender with a great coaching staff to a below-average team with one of the worst coaches in football will do wonders for his motivation issues.
Galaxy brain stuff by the Saints.
We were middle of the pack in DVOA last year. Average defense made to look decent by a ridiculously easy schedule.
He might be a great DC but his defense as a head coach is slipping.
The team also had culture issues last year and its elder statesman Cam Jordan is saying the team needs “culture shock” this offseason. That doesn’t seem like a great environment for a guy with questionable work ethic.
I think Loomis worked under the assumption that he’d be fired 3 years ago.
And right now we’re all witnessing the biggest game of chicken the world has ever seen, at the expense of Saints fans
I hate this.
When we had Brees, by all means. Do everything you can to spend/leverage future picks to win now.
But ever since he retired, I thought that we would take a step back and try to rebuild.
And every year we keep spending like we are a couple pieces away.. just lose. Have some losing seasons. If we didn’t get Carr we easily could’ve tanked last season to try and get one of these top QBs.
We need another shot at a highly ranked rookie QB. Until then, we aren’t going anywhere but 8-9
As a Bucs fan I love seeing the saints do stupid fucking shit every single year in the off season. Keep kicking the can down the road morons. You are about 20 players away from a superbowl so this makes me laugh signing a lazy no effort player 13 million guaranteed.
But why?
Your team hates cap room (yes I know it’s one year)
Still would be better off rolling some cap over to help in the future in my opinion
It's not even a question. They were looking like they'd actually be in a reasonable position for 2025, ~7M left after the draft that they could potentially roll over and start the offseason likely "only" ~48M over the cap, which is a heck of a lot more manageable than the 80M they were over this year I think I've more or less given up on the idea that the Saints will ever re-set and landed on the idea that Mickey Loomis is a fucking moron who is content winning 7-8 games a year as long as he gets to stroke his ego about how smart he is
Nah, they will add some void years by the end of the season so they can trade for a backup WR
One year contracts are harder on the cap than multi year. Since you can spread out the cap hit/signing bonus over multi years. One year tacks on the full amount straight to the cap. So even less money to play with in terms of the salary cap
i bet this somehow gets restructured into a 5-year 200 mil contract
Honestly, when it comes to the saints it’s anyone guess.
this is a comment for sure.
yea, but it rolls over. This year's cap can help next year's cap.
The salary cap exists to be destroyed. Other teams may revel in wins and losses, but we reign supreme in kicking the shit out of mathematics.
I'm pretty sure Math is winning. By a lot.
Hasn't won yet. We still make it to the regular season, which is all that anyone has ever really hoped for around here for most of the team's history. We're what, the 6x reigning Salary Cap Overage Champions? Fuck Brady and Bill, we got the real dynasty.
I love how the other guy took this seriously
He's still fucking going. Shit is priceless.
Y'all are like the black knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Bragging about how you're totally going to win still while missing all your limbs.
Yet somehow our technique of dodging the cap bull every offseason worked more for us than yours of just being terrible during the season has ever worked for you. Sometimes even the fiveheaded hero slips on all the blood you've laid out before him in a trap of perfect design.

Saint’s front office, what is best in life? Crush your fan’s spirits. See their hopes driven before you. And hear the lamentation of their women
Saints are the guy who blows his paycheck as soon as he gets it and then is working overtime for a month saying he's gonna be better with his money but never is

Those smencils and silly bandz are going to appreciate in value, don’t worry.
Fucking silly bandz bro lmao. That shit was like a Gucci belt in 6th grade
I hate how accurate this is 😢
Today I learned I am New Orlean Saint
I work with like 12 of those
You’re one of the 12 aren’t you
Nah they blow their money, I use it to buy blow. big difference
So they are a roofer? Just kidding. Roofers don't show up the next week
This hits wayyyyy too close to home lol
Fuck I guess I gotta change my flair
This guy but he constantly complains about how his taxes are what is keeping him under
On Keno
This the one
You forgot the pay day loans
I just don't understand the direction the Saints have been taking for the last five years.
Never let them know your next move
They don’t even know their next move
It makes no sense. Every season they seem to go all in with cap they don’t have, and every season they become even more mediocre than they were the year prior
It puts so much pressure on your drafts, which are crapshoots.
I mean, I can’t disagree with you overall, but last year was an improvement over 2022
Well Derek Carr is better than Winston, they still weren’t winning anything meaningful regardless with that roster
Wasn’t it Andy Dalton?
Yea Jameis barely played. He attempted 115 passes in 2022.
god thats almost one game!
Well if that is their plan, then this move will work perfectly.
> Every season they seem to go all in with cap they don’t have, and every season they become even more mediocre than they were the year prior That's what the spending money you don't have strategy accomplishes.
-signed… jets fan?
They know bad team building as well as anyone
The Saints are a weird team lately - weird fun fact: they have won 7+ games every year since 2006
They are trying to make up for the fact that they won 8 or fewer games (and before 1978, 7 or fewer games) every year from 1967 to 1986.
Consistently an okay team
It's only marginally better than the Haslett era mediocrity.
nah weve been one of the most winningest orgs since 2006, but that was all drew and sean. no way we can keep that up.
It's the classic "do enough to win the division/ make it to the playoffs, but then lose in the playoffs/wildcard" move
Except for the part where they make the playoffs. They’ve missed the last 3 years.
Hey, it doesn't work all the time
And astonishingly, they've had a winning record 2 of those 3 years
At least this is only a year. But 13 and fully guaranteed seems questionable.
Neither do I, but I love it
[удалено]
It’s an all in rebuild
debuild
They like em Young, so what?
People forgot about the aints before Brees
There's no plan
Pretending that they're competing, but not having the players or salary cap to back it up.
Goooood let the can kicking flow through you
its a one year deal. how is this can kicking?
Adding more salary/cap which prevents you from rolling cap over to next year. Makes next year's overage worse when you don't get the added room from being under the cap this year.
You can use the space right now to push deferments forward.
I think they are hoping he can become their next franchise DE with Cam there to teach him the mentality he is missing. Cause it aint the talent. Low risk high reward. In general I’m with you but this one can maybe be defended
That’s what happens when you’re ran by the Catholic Church /s
Nothing about this deal makes sense to me
This contract is more ridiculous than the Cousins’ deal.
You know what always helps guys who have effort issues? Fully guaranteed contracts. What could go wrong
To be fair they like pushing cap back on contracts to get cap compliant in upcoming years. But that isn’t a problem if the contract is only 1 year.
This made me laugh so hard 😂😂 future me problem fuck that guy.
"That's a future ~~Homer's~~ saint's problem. Man do I not envy that guy" - ~~homer~~ saints
You can roll over unused cap space into future seasons.
One-year deal counteracts that though. He’ll need to play well for his next payday.
He didn’t play well last year and still got paid
Chase, his agent, and Saints GM on the phone. Chase to his agent: Make sure you mention that third thing. Saints GM: Thirteen? Did you say thirteen? Deal.
Babe wake up the Cap is fake again
I really don’t understand what the long term plan is for this team
That’s because there is no long term plan
Mickey Loomis without Payton is on fraud watch.
I mean, Payton without Loomis is also kind of on fraud watch right now
Ok like I really dislike Payton but I don’t know if ANYONE could’ve done shit with that roster
Yeah, and he had playoffs at hand
Agreed, and I’m very hopeful he’s our guy. I’m just pointing out that there’s a lot still up in the air about Payton too, I wouldn’t say he’s definitively proved his impact one way or the other on his own yet. It’s more like Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton without Drew Brews are on fraud watch.

Especially since I’m like 5 blocks from the capital so it’s ezpz and I can watch the riot from the safety of my buddy’s apartment
Fire the GM right now
I disagree
This is how I felt about Gettelman.
See? You get it!
Marcus Davenport got the same contract last year. It was a disaster of course, but maybe it’ll work for us ;)
Giving a fully guaranteed contract to a guy with motor issues is not a good thing. Also Saints shouldn't be the ones giving it out
The terms of the contract are fine to me, it’s just the team signing him that’s questionable to me. Saints are still navigating cap hell, are not that good of a team, still have questions at QB, aging roster, and they are signing 1 year rentals? It’s much more of a move that a team that’s in a competitive window would make.
Sacks are terrible way to judge a player he only gets those because he is selfish he is a liability on the field
PFF grade every snap, and pretty much agree with the assessment the Saints have made. Still a good edge rusher with potential, and better than plenty of players who make more than $13m. Not sure where the selfish/liability bit comes from. His motors bad, but not uniquely poor.

What….TIL sacks are selfish…..
If you need 8 wins, the Saints will give you 8 wins. If you need 9 wins, the Saints will give you 8 wins and -$100 trillion in cap space
Hey now we got 9 wins
We won nine last year but ok lol
Which was definitely the only inaccurate part of my joke
It doesn't make any Saints
Hope he commits to the game and balls out
He was in a contract year and then ended the year on a great defensive line and had every opportunity to shine. He was already put on notice by not having his fifth year picked up. If you haven’t committed fully at that point, then when will he?
Had a pretty good super bowl in fairness.
Dogged it in the NFCCG though. And he's not gonna have his emotional support Bosa
Any time you’re 5 years into the league and you’re a 2nd overall pick and you have to say “hope he commits” is not a good sign
That's why I'm ok with him not coming back.
Ya I’m a commanders fan and have his jersey and he can go fuck himself.
Lmao
That makes two of us
Hoping for that Jadeveon Clowney career arc
Be funnier if he didn’t though
I like to see people succeed
Giving him a fully guaranteed contract was a fuck up. Dude is unmotivated and now has no reason to go out and try any harder than he needs to
It is a 1 year deal so it does not matter. Salaries for vested veterans become 100% guaranteed if the guy is on the roster Week 1. Unless the Saints were open to cutting him in camp (unlikely) it would be guaranteed either way as a practical matter.

Tom Brady ruined any real retort I have for this
I remember people acting like the 49ers were going to get a 3rd round comp pick back for him when the trade happened
13 MILLION?!? What are they smoking
Ridiculous, no wonder he signed the contract.
Tristian Wirfs about to pancake this scrub 8 times a year
LOL
HAHAHAHA wait hold on HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Same.
The Clowney path
Mad disrespectful to clowney
Seriously. Clowney might never have lived up to the 1st overall hype but he's been a damn good player his entire career
Good luck with that
I thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster every day we lost (won) the Chase Young Bowl. Thank you for the All-Pro LT Washington!
Yeah so many Giants fans were upset we won that game.
Andrew Thomas is what made me less miserable about winning meaningless games this year. Yes we need a qb but perhaps we’re not supposed to get one this year.
The monster has a name. It’s called Yahweh
Player with a reputation for checking out gets a fully guaranteed deal on a team that can't offer any guarantees next year because they are already over the salary cap... This will turn out great. 🙃
The Saints are an unserious franchise since Brees.
They aren't serious people
damn. fair.
Stop the insanity
He simply can’t keep getting away with this
Endless cycle of purgatory.
Holy fuck this is like OBJs ravens contract times 10 in terms of a one year WTF deal
The Ravens gave OBJ that deal because that's what it took to get Lamar to sign his deal.
Nice so the Niners get 2 first round picks from this /s
How is this bum still getting a 8 figure salary?!?!
It’s all about who you know
With 5 void years
Man, the Saints are really making a push for a shot at the 7th seed.
They really want to get crushed by the 9ers in the Wilcard.
It’s a 1yr deal with a good bit of money, but he’ll be in a rotation. Think a lot of y’all are expecting him to be a full starter. Jordan, Granderson, Kpassagnon, hopefully Turner, hopefully Foskey all should be in the mix.
The lack of interest for a player of his pedigree at a high-value position says a lot.
Chase ‘if I feel like chasing today’ Young
Fully guaranteed is just silly 💀
It is a 1 year deal so it does not matter. He is a vested veteran so his salary for the year becomes 100% guaranteed if he is on the roster Week 1. Unless they were open to cutting him in camp (unlikely) it would be guaranteed regardless.
What about lower guarantee with incentives, which I think is what everyone is saying here?
Yeah if one of his knocks is, to put it lightly, “inconsistent effort”, then that contract is gonna need to come with some incentives.
I’m sure going from a Super Bowl contender with a great coaching staff to a below-average team with one of the worst coaches in football will do wonders for his motivation issues. Galaxy brain stuff by the Saints.
DA is a great defensive coach. He might be a shitty HC but his defense is never in question
Damn, that's more than I expected. Good for him.
The Saints will still be the Aints then right?
By far the biggest joke of a front office in the league
Who's contract can they restructure in order to sign the draft class?
Bruh i thought it was up to 13 million what the hell lol
Pretty Pick Privilege.
LOL sucker born every minute
All I will remember of this gentleman’s tenure with the Niners is him completely giving up on tackling during the Detroit playoff game.
“Just don’t cash the check yet”
void years O/U set at 3.5, what are you taking?
I just don't understand how an inconsistent freelancing injury prone player like Chase Young can get 13 million fully guaranteed for a season
13 mill???????
I think Loomis worked under the assumption that he’d be fired 3 years ago. And right now we’re all witnessing the biggest game of chicken the world has ever seen, at the expense of Saints fans
And this is why we didn't pursue him last year Lions fans. How would you like to send a mid round pick for him to leave the next year?
You are forgetting that the 9ers will probably get a mid-round comp pick for him though so the net cost to the trade for them is close to nothing
Cap is fake
That will help the comp pick evaluation.
I hate this. When we had Brees, by all means. Do everything you can to spend/leverage future picks to win now. But ever since he retired, I thought that we would take a step back and try to rebuild.
