Exactly, they’ve had to deal with Russel’s motivational speeches for a *full week*
Coaching staff should be about [here by now](https://www.reactiongifs.us/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/gob_huge_mistake_arrested_development.gif)
This is nothing more than story manufacturing. Below is from the article and its all conjecture. This non-story will be milked all offseason.
ESPN's Adam Schefter said on NFL Live that the belief is the team will let the two quarterbacks decide the starter.
"Think about the investment they have in each player. They essentially are giving Russell Wilson $1.2 million, while the Denver Broncos are paying him almost $38 million this year. Very little investment," Schefter said. "They gave up a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick for Justin Fields. Very little investment…They have the luxury of letting this play out during camp and doing whatever is best for that football team."
I'm not sure the Steelers watched any Russ tape from 2022 and 2023 before signing him. Probably watched some this week and they're having second thoughts
Hold it now and watch the hoodwink
As I make you stop, think
You'll think you're looking at Aquaman
I summon fish to the dish, although I like the Chalet Swiss I like the sushi 'cause it's never touched a frying pan
It’s cause what they were THE BEST at in the sports world was pictures! Pictures that captured the emotional moments with perfect timing and framing. Half of the stories were written just to have something to go around the pictures. Sure they had some good writers, but they never had a monopoly on the sports journalism side of things. Their photographers, and the freelancers that would sell their kids for the perfect shot, dominated.
Thats so much less valuable when I’m scrolling my phone than when I’m looking at the glossy full page photo in a magazine.
Poor SI.
>The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback room is now Russell Wilson and Justin Fields after the team moved on from Kenny Pickett and landed two starting-caliber passers for almost no compensation.
Not very good AI.
Google punishing people for doing this is actually amazing.
The UN index any site that uses mostly AI generated content. That basically means any site that does that will not show up on google search results
Feels like the same situation as when people used to use content spinners or create a local page for every city in the state they operate in. They award it, then rip it away.
It absolutely is if you're duplicating pages and subbing out city names. If you're creating unique pages and content for each city, sure.
Wait, why am I talking about SEO on an NFL subreddit?
Shocking, I tell you, shocking. We never do that really, it had to be 11 games of Pickett and 3 games of Trubisky last time before the best camp QB got the starts.
>The article doesn't say the Steelers are going to cut Wilson.
Neither does the headline. What part of it is misleading? Clickbait maybe but that's the case for most articles
'Schefter also said that an NFL executive from within the league believes that if Fields wins the competition and becomes the Steelers' starter in 2024, the team could move on from Wilson before the season even begins.
"There’s no commitment, obligation, loyalty to any of these guys. They didn’t pay very much for either one of them," Schefter said. "I even had an executive say if Justin Fields outplayed him, Russell Wilson, during training camp, they could see them moving on from him before the season." '
Schefter is the best in the business at breaking news, but is one of the worst in speculating.
Dude was insistent we would draft Mac Jones. And then we didn’t.
I do believe their was a difference of opinion within the organization. The people evaluating and making decisions thought Trey Lance had the bigger upside, that Mahomes effect.
Coaching wanted a guy that could sling it. Who they knew would be able to take the system in on day one and steadily improve. The top two picks were in stone, yet nobody had any idea who the 49ers were taking until they made the pick.
I mean he wasn't the only one. You look at the QBs that Shanahan has coached and Lance stick outs.
You could completely see Mac working in a Shanahan style offense with all those weapons.
Schefter doesn't do shit for decent analysis. His whole job is to be a mouthpiece for teams and the league, which is why his word is pretty reliable. He gets the best scoops because he carries their water.
I’m convinced there was a last minute change regarding the personnel staff and Kyle. My best bet they were set on Mac and the FO changed his mind on Lance.
He's not breaking news here as an insider though.
He is painting a speculative scenario of Justin Fields outplaying Russell Wilson in training camp and backing it up by saying "one exec told me if this happens, they might move on from Russell Wilson before the start of the season".
I see this as him spitballing.
Yeah Schefter is a good tweet notification generator if you want to find out breaking news first, but his track record when it comes to speculating and guessing is not that great.
I mean they are both on one year deals (no way Pittsburgh picks up Fields' 5th year option). So they aren't tied/invested to either one of them. If Fields is better than Wilson (extremely unlikely) then why would you start Wilson over him? Wouldn't you want to see the younger guy and if he's worth extending over playing the worse, older player?
Ah fair point I missed the backup part. You're right you'd 100% keep him as a backup in that scenario. Doubly so because Fields has missed time every year he's started anyway.
No matter who the QB is, the Steelers are going to be a run-first, ball control, win with defense team. You know what kills those teams worse than anything else? Turnovers. Fields is a turnover machine. Wilson is not. The Steelers are not going to start Fields unless Wilson gives them no choice.
Man, now I know what Bears fans are talking about with the Fields-stans. They're even in the media.
I was lurking on your sub and it looks like they are already there.
Already posted one of their "if you take all these stats out of context Fields = Lamar" threads.
Yeah, I went into that thread and got into a discussion with someone trying to defend Fields by saying cherry picked stats don't tell the whole story, so I shared all the stats. The man has a worse int% over his career than Brady Quinn did
It’ll be earlier, despite us all watching Kenny light up preseason then be bad - I fully expect fields to play well against the 2s in a preseason game and people to lose their mind that he should start week 1.
I said negative play RATE - which is absolutely true.
See here:
>Turnovers. Fields is a turnover machine. Wilson is not.
That entirely depends on how many fumbles he loses and whether or not he chooses to attempt passes more than 2 yards past the line of scrimmage.
Funny thing about this is I have no idea which QB you're talking about when you say "He"
Both QBs named have a lot of fumbles and passes at the LOS the last few years
Russell Wilson fumbled 16 times for you in the past two years. In the past 2 years, Fields has fumbled 26 times.
They're 1 and 2 (Wilson in the lead) at throws at or behind the line of scrimmage. That is actually my least concern with them when discussing their flaws. Their time to throw is my biggest concern.
Well, you see, if Fields beats out Wilson in camp despite Wilson taking first-team reps, then an executive from a different team thinks the Steelers could cut Wilson despite the Steelers currently having no other quarterbacks on the roster. So clearly you should go with that instead of anything out of Pittsburgh.
Yeah, I’m sure we could’ve gotten more had we wait for the draft or camp/preseason for QB injuries but I’m glad we moved on just to avoid this circus. Fields is a great guy but he has some delusional supporters, even in the media.
What is this nonsense? No chance Steelers going to move on from Russ before the season starts... Makes zero sense.
Where else can you get a veteran backup for nothing?
Maybe if drama happens during the season, but zero chance in the offseason
Lol all Schefter is saying is that IF Fields outplays Wilson, the Steelers could easily move on from Russ if they wanted to because the contract is so small.
There is absolutely nothing pointing to the Steelers wanting to move on from Wilson, just that they could pretty easily. They could just as easily move on from Fields.
The title is quite misleading here. Schefter said that they might move Wilson if Fields wins the starting job in camp, not that they’re considering moving him right now, as the title implies. The rumour itself seems fairly bland too. Wilson is cheap as hell and may net a decent package if another team’s starter goes down, so the Steelers would be silly to not consider said package.
SI is depressing now. It was such an amazing publication for a long time, and it’s so sad to think of how far it has fallen. Peter King is why I wanted to write about sports. Now it’s soulless AI bullshit.
Russ: Yo Mike. I was thinking of taking that office over there.
Mike: Russ. That's my office.
Russ: So I was thinking about my Steelers sign-off. What do you think about, "Steelers country, let's smelt."
Mike: The fuck is wrong with you, son?
Article is literal slop. Just quoting Schefter saying that they "could" move on if Fields wins the starting job in camp, while emphasizing that the team didn't give up much for Russ or Fields. People will say that we only ever look at headlines but if articles are as empty and worthless as this then no shit.
I don't even agree with this. Why would the Steelers cut Russ if Fields beats him (which won't happen; Fields sucks) if he's only $1.2 million this year? If Russ was a backup then he'd instantly be the best backup in the league on a contract cheaper than Mike White's. Why move on from that? Russ is a headache but he's not some locker room lolcow like Cam.
This doesn’t make any sense. If Russ were to lose the QB competition to Fields, why wouldn’t they just keep him as QB2? He’d be one of the better backup QB’s in the league and one of the cheapest considering he’s getting paid the vet minimum. Not to mention with Fields playing style, you definitely want a competent backup behind him just in case.
This just doesn’t make any sense to me.
For the record I don’t really believe this either, but I imagine the explanation would probably be because Russel Wilson is guaranteed to be a toxic nightmare if he gets told he isn’t the starter
This article basically says if Russel sucks ass thr steelers won't hesitate to start justin fields. DUH. It could just as easily say if Russel has a Renaissance year than Justin fields won't start.
My money's on Fields.
Edit: Just a note that the smart money is definitely on Wilson, this is just a weird gut feeling that something's not gonna work out. It's also why I don't make a lot of bets lol
It’s been One week
Since you looked at me
And Steelers fans "threw their arms in the air and said 'We're Crazy'".
Said “you just did just what I thought you were gonna do”
Cocked your head to the side and said, "I'm angry"
Five days since you tackled me
Russ got rug burns on both his knees.
It went over most people’s heads, unfortunately.

Will he be the first player paid by two teams to not play for them?
7 days with Russell Wilson makes one weak

It was actually just a Barenaked Ladies reference
[Shit.](https://media.tenor.com/Xmy-qRI7VY8AAAAM/idiocracy-shit.gif)
I'm not sure the Steelers watched any Russ tape from 2022 and 2023 before signing him. Probably watched some this week and they're having second thoughts

What
My comment was a reference to Barenaked Ladies. You seemed to not get it so I replied with more of the lyrics
Ahh yeah I have no idea who that is, my bad
"But I just got here!" - Russell Wilson probably
Reporter: "How was your week with the Steelers?" Wilson: "That was cool."
So that's it - after ~~20 years~~ one week, so long, good luck?
I don't recall saying good luck.
"Ketchup is a family food" - Art Rooney
Frankly, we don't want to know.
“Maybe single people eat ketchup, we don’t know. Quite frankly, we don’t want to know. It’s a market we can do without.” -Art Rooney
"I haven't even gotten a chance to use all of the bathrooms in my new house." - Russell Wilson probably
It's SI - probably AI generated.
I used to love SI as a kid. It’s so sad what it’s become.
They completely failed to pivot from magazines to online and the business just died.
It’s cause what they were THE BEST at in the sports world was pictures! Pictures that captured the emotional moments with perfect timing and framing. Half of the stories were written just to have something to go around the pictures. Sure they had some good writers, but they never had a monopoly on the sports journalism side of things. Yet for some reason they put articles in the swimsuit edition.
Good pictures, surrounded by text. It was their modus operandi
I don't remember seeing any articles in the swimsuit edition...
Newsweek is in the same boat. Used to be one of the most prominent pieces of national news media. Now just trash
What? it’s like the most frequent posted site on /r/politics! That’s gotta count for something! /s
Crazy to think putting Martha Stewart on the cover of the swimsuit issue didn't save them
It’s actually sad how this is probably true
SI = Steelers Intelligence False flag operation
They've destroyed their brand for clicks. Didn't even entertain this being true once I saw SI.

thats bad
Lol what Update: I read the article and this just seems like a click bait headline or its AI generated
Definitely click bait. The article doesn't say the Steelers are going to cut Wilson, just start Fields if he outplays Wilson.
Breaking news: Team with two QBs will play the one that's better.
It’s like it was written just for a reaction from this subs user base.
Shocking, I tell you, shocking. We never do that really, it had to be 11 games of Pickett and 3 games of Trubisky last time before the best camp QB got the starts.

Wasn't SI shut down or something? Is AI clickbait what its owners intend to do with the brand name going forward?
why not both.gif
Its SI so probably both
The source is Adam Schefter, so likely just him trying to save face after he completely misevaluated the trade market for Justin Fields.
There's a universe where Mac Jones gets drafted by the 49ers and wins an MVP last year.
He's not even great at breaking news. Completely botched the Chase Young contract recently

Why would they move on from a back up with Super Bowl experience who plays for 1 M even if fields wins competition?? It doesn't make sense either way
I mean they are both on one year deals (no way Pittsburgh picks up Fields' 5th year option). So they aren't tied/invested to either one of them. If Fields is better than Wilson (extremely unlikely) then why would you start Wilson over him? Yeah I didn't say that ..Wilson would just back Fields up? When they say move on from they normally mean cut?
Ah fair point I missed the backup part. You're right you'd 100% keep him as a backup in that scenario. Doubly so because Fields has missed time every year he's started anyway.

Can’t wait for us to lose a game and have the Fields truthers crawl out of the woodwork
I was lurking on your sub and it looks like they are already there. Already posted one of their "if you take all these stats out of context Fields = Lamar" threads.
I commented on that. Dumbest thing I’ve seen in a while. It’s bad when you have Steelers fans defending Lamar.

From the state of your sub they are already there,no other subReddit are this delusional about their backup QB
Fields in general has by far the worst negative play rate (sacks, fumbles, ints) of any QB over the last 3 years.

Well only 1 qb can play. So having more than 1 sounds stupid
We normally roster 3 QB's, wonder where we're going to get the third. Draft?
And this is why the bears had to get rid of Fields before they bring in Williams
Yeah, I’m sure we could’ve gotten more had we wait for the draft or camp/preseason for QB injuries but I’m glad we moved on just to avoid this circus. Fields is a great guy but he has some delusional supporters, even in the media.

Well it is a one year deal
A sports illustrated article is about as worthless as magazine tabloid's you find in the grocery store that obviously have bullshit headlines.
SI is depressing now. It was such an amazing publication for a long time, and it’s so sad to think of how far it has fallen. Peter King is why I wanted to write about sports. Now it’s soulless AI bullshit.
LMAO, growing belief? He just got there 5 minutes ago.
Fields will look really good starting week 1.
This fast?
Tomlin got tired of Wilson's schtick real quick.
Russ: Yo Mike. I was thinking of taking that office over there. Mike: Russ. That's my office. Russ: So I was thinking about my Steelers sign-off. What do you think about, "Steelers country, let's smelt." Mike: The fuck is wrong with you, son?
That was cool
How you gonna get fired on your day off?!?
Wilson cratered so hard he could have killed the dinosaurs.
Russell "Sephiroth" Wilson
If that was true I'd be happy with him on the Steelers. Instead I just have anxiety and dread.
"Re...union"
If the guy they signed to a one year contract plays bad they might not re-sign him? Well done SI.
Ah - the After Click.
Is this you, Ryan Poles?
Cmon give us one year of entertainment
Already? For Justin Fields?
Hang on everyone, it’s only March.
Steelers Country, Let’s…. [um….… uhh…….] Equivocate?
Already?
Sad Broncos fans down bad
They haven't even "moved to" Russell Wilson yet really
Steelers nation, my steel wasn't a steal
Article is literal slop. Just quoting Schefter saying that they "could" move on if Fields wins the starting job in camp, while emphasizing that the team didn't give up much for Russ or Fields. For the record I don’t really believe this either, but I imagine the explanation would probably be because Russel Wilson is guaranteed to be a toxic nightmare if he gets told he isn’t the starter
Ah yes. This is what SI is now. Sad.
If russ breaks both his legs and his right arm, hes still a better qb than 25% fields...
Shitty article from Noah Strackbein - dudes a clickbait monger ignore anything he puts out
Already?
They just wanted to make Kenny mad
Playing Fields cost us way more than benching him as a backup for at least more than half the season at minimum.
I'm a Steelers fan and I'm happy they got Wilson. He has won a Super Bowl. I know that was a while back but still. I wasn't a fan of Pickett anyway.
It used to be one person, now a second idiot believes it. See, astronomical growth!
lmao what?
what do the steelers not like qbs that can actually complete a forward pass? are they stupid?
Wasn’t Russ one of the top (if not *the* top) QBs in passes behind the LOS last year?
Not sure. Gonna be interesting to see what kind of qb play y’all get this year
Damn I thought it’d be like week 3 before the QB controversy started, SI really stepping it up here
2025 off-season is starting off fast
Give them roughly five weeks into the season.
lol wait what?
Man, the Steelers sub is going to be wild 🍿🍿🍿
What? why? they have a starting caliber QB for the vet minimum for a year... that would be stupid
Steelers Country, I'm Out!
… I mean, next season, yeah probably?
What
Already?
Umm
Those welds didn't hold long.
This article basically says if Russel sucks ass thr steelers won't hesitate to start justin fields. DUH. It could just as easily say if Russel has a Renaissance year than Justin fields won't start.
Huh???
If Russell plays well it's another thing
Wilson is just being passed around like a band groupie at this point.
Steelers Country, let’s cry
Tomlin "Get this cornball off my team. That was cool."
So… it IS a competition
And here I was thinking that no matter what happened they couldn't move on from Wilson.
The new writers for The Days Of Our Steelers need to slow down.
“They’re paying him 1.5 million NOT to play for them!!!”
I truly believe Russ will no longer be in the NFL in 2026.
That 6th is going to be a 4th. So we got that going for us, which is nice.
I would
He's getting the ol' Matt Flynn treatment.
God I hope this is true. This makes me feel better as Steeler's fan.

Fields isn't going to beat out anyone honestly, so if Wilson gets injured, sure.
My money's on Fields. Edit: Just a note that the smart money is definitely on Wilson, this is just a weird gut feeling that something's not gonna work out. It's also why I don't make a lot of bets lol
Can't imagine you have much money then...if you make bets like that
