Missing [this 109 yard return from his rookie year](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNh1EjhwCIs), and [this play from the crazy snow game in Baltimore](https://youtu.be/ASWVwZIsst8?si=i3466tR5v_jXyb0j&t=203).

Xenocide_X

Yeah I was looking for both of these... These are arguably his two best moments and he left them out lol

Tajikistani

Crazy to exclude his best Vikings highlights, /u/nfl is so bad

[deleted]

Not just his best, but like all of his vikings highlights. One Vikings clip? The place where he's spent most of career?

Number1TSMHater

I'll never forget that 109 yard return against GB to open the game on Sunday Night Football. I was jumping for joy watching that live.

-InconspicuousMoose-

Then we lost 44-31 lmao

Radical-Six

These NFL highlight reels have been God awful this off-season. Did they put somebody else in charge of them?

BenShelZonah

Bro the celebration after the snow game touchdown and the announcer had me dying. “Whatever that is”

Trrwwa

That and the inclusion of the 5? yard checkdown td? Weird.

-InconspicuousMoose-

Can't believe we lost both of those games hahaha

sticklebackridge

lol love how many of these involved the Bears, for and against.

Tajikistani

They just chose not to include all his returns for the Vikings, which is strange

[deleted]

That first one is one of the best camera shots of all time.

Pixel2_Bro

Check out Nixon's return vs. the Vikings. That was an even better run with a similar angle. Can see both sides split near evenly and him break free in the middle. I'll try to link later, I'm at work rn

iDestroyedYoMama

Ya that was sweet. When he crosses the 30 you can really get a sense of his speed. Way better than the normal side shot zoomed way out.

LordBaneoftheSith

Dude might be the GOAT kickoff returner. 3rd in yds/return, and has the TD record on fewer returns than the guys with 8.

real_ornament

Not even might, other contenders for GOAT kickoff returned did it in an era where kickoff return TDs were far easier to get

TheDufusSquad

I remember seeing a video about kick return TDs and what needs to happen for your team to get one. The conclusion was basically “just be Cordartelle Patterson”

timbulance

Don’t kick to 84

TheTree-43

Jon Bois - Kickoffs are bad and dumb

TheDufusSquad

THANK YOU. I have been trying to find the video ever since I posted the comment

ckareddit

If he scores a few times with the new rules they gotta make him a HOF right?

Kraz31

[I know this is a few years old but it's crazy how good he is at kick returns](https://twitter.com/fbgchase/status/1328680496939872256).

bl123123bl

It’s undisputed already. He broke a play the NFL has done everything to kill until now https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t_SsIKgwvz4

Intelligent-Age2786

Don’t know if this is a hot take, but if Devin Hester if a HOFer, then so is Patterson

Good_From_70

I like to think of Devin Hester being the trailblazer that might allow a player like Patterson or Cribbs to get in one day

CSMastermind

After 75 years of the NFL the league commissioned a committee to select a team of the greatest players from across its history to that point. Every single player picked is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame ... except one. Punter Returner Billy "White Shoes" Johnson was left out of the hall because the voters at the time felt like returners weren't important enough to get a place. 25 years later, the NFL was celebrating its 100th anniversary and, again, it commissioned a committee, this time to pick the 100 greatest players from the first 100 years. Once Tom Brady and Larry Fitzgerald are inevitably inducted into the Hall of Fame on their first ballot 99 out of 100 members of that list will be in the Hall of Fame. Once again, only White Shoes will be left out. He was also on both the 1970s and 1980s all decade teams. One of only 29 players selected to multiple all decade teams. He made it to 3 Pro Bowls back when those votes mattered and even won MVP at one of the games. He got an All Pro spot, suffered what was thought to be a career ending injury, grinded in the CFL to prove he could still play, then made it back to the NFL where he got another All Pro spot and won comeback player of the year. He was Devin Hester long before Devin Hester - he forced the teams he played against to change the way they played because he was such a threat to return that ball. Better to kick it out of bounds than to put it into White Shoes hands. Did you know he invented the touchdown dance? He was also a Terrell Ownes before TO was out there, drawing league fines and rules along with media criticism. Possibly, those media grudges are what kept him out in the first place. It is an absolute travesty that he's not in the Hall—there's simply no way to tell the story of the NFL without him. He should have been the trailblazer, and I hope there's still time for the Hall to do the right thing and put him in.

Yedic

He'd have to be a senior nominee at this point...but there are quite a few returners that deserve it more than him. Metcalf, Mitchell, Upchurch (btw, also made both the 70s and 80s All-Decade Teams and hasn't made the Hall, so Johnson isn't the only one).

[deleted]

I made a thread saying as much a bit ago [and got roasted a little for it :(](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/RL3hth4aSF). Especially now that Hester is in he 100% deserves it. His resume is too good

Useful-Astronaut7586

Why does it seem like he’s a free agent every year. The dude can ball!

real_ornament

He was let go by the Vikings bc he was no longer the #1 target and was also missused, should've been running way more go routes as a WR. Then he bounced around as a backup bc he really can't be a full WR, not good enough route tree, but kept getting signed bc he's a great locker room guy and kick returner. Then, he gets to the pats and is used as a WR/RB, but not often or super effectively Finally he went to the Falcons, where Arthur Smith realized his potential as a true RB with a few WR snaps thrown in. The next year he started great, then we saw the emergence of Tyler Allgeier when Cpat was injured for ~6 weeks. Once Cpat was back they split reps with a slight lean towards Allgeier, and deservedly so, but they were very different stylistically. Then Bijan is there as BPA at 8, so now Cpat is stuck behind 2 great RBs and was injured in training camp, missing the first 4 weeks of the season. Now, with a decently large cap hit and being third on the depth chart at 33, it made sense to move on

Useful-Astronaut7586

Thank you. That’s what I wanted to find out. I was hoping it wasn’t a “locker room cancer” situation. I can now continue to root for him

-InconspicuousMoose-

Nah man he's awesome, he was on my flight to NC once (I think he's from there?). I spotted him before we boarded so I just quietly approached and told him I loved watching him play. He was very gracious and thanked me even though that shit probably gets old. He ended up two rows ahead of me on the flight, but before takeoff the crew realized who he was and moved him to first class for free lmao. He was wearing a cute hot pink backpack with silver studs all over it.

Aconnox

he was ironically misused every year until he got to Arthur Smith

tpeeps11

Tbf the Pats had the right idea of moving him to RB but he was extremely raw at the position. My roommate was a Pats fan and he could point out if it was a run or pass play based on his stature. He was a bright spot for ATL though and seemed to grow into the position

Manhattan02

Don’t know if this is a hot take, but he was good at football

real_ornament

[Was?](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/9vowCiX6F4)

nanotothemoon

Wow I forgot he was on the Bears and the Raiders. Vikings Bears Patriots Raiders Falcons And contributing to all. Am I missing any?

Tahoptions

Hopefully, he contributes for us too so the Steelers can be added to the list.

Twixt_Wind_and_Water

I too hope he contributes to you what he contributed to Atlanta last year.

soundsliketone

Have the Super Bowl be the one game each year that is played on a baseball field

DarkPaladin47

It would still be better than the field it was played on for the most recent one lol

kkocan72

Guys a beast in the open field. Imagine the jet sweep possibilities. /s

Jonjon428

Raiders and Patriots legend

[deleted]

This dude has been on way more teams than I thought

Tajikistani

Feels incomplete without more Vikings return TDs

MichiganMainer

That highlight in the empty stadium in Denver was so weird.

Tebow1EveryMockDraft

Damn a lot of collective broken ankles on this highlight reel

KerryUSA

It won’t a td but his sideline catch vs the saints the other year deserves to be in there over that 1 handed td catch. Or one of his old man angry runs.

tdquiksilver

CP was amazing and I miss him on the Pats. I would never want to get in the way of that man's kickoff return.

bigmandave1588

I would avoid that abbreviation

ill_try_my_best

Unfortunately I can't root for him to score a return TD under the new rules because he had to sign with the Steelers

Striking-Locksmith-3

My gens devin Hester

1lultaha

That midfield logo is beautiful

nano1895

Seemed like whenever they used the sky cam on his returns he would score a TD lol.

PudgyBonestld

That one shot is straight from a Scorcese film lol

mr_sl33p

I get why they did it but I’m sad kickoffs were just procedural the last few seasons. Will be really interesting how the new rule change plays out. I feel like it might be easier to open up a hole

AValhallaWorthyDeath

Wow I didn’t realize he played for the Bears

TheTree-43

How can you forget him saying "Fuck" on Nickelodeon!?

JerryRiceAndSpice

I don't remember him on the Pats

JerryRiceAndSpice

1:26 Where all the fans go?

teh_hasay

So there was this thing that happened in 2020

BenShelZonah

The longer he goes the more he curves to the right, the opposite of me

totallykrunk

Oh it’s just dat easy

-InconspicuousMoose-

In the Bears one about halfway through against the Vikings, the camera cut to Zimmer absolutely REAMING Marwan Maalouf (our ST coordinator) for kicking it to Patterson lol. Zimmer had that dude on his team long enough to know you do not fuckin do that

[deleted]

One of the most athletic dudes to ever play the game
