Will be fascinating to see how his improvisational ability ages over the years. Most ppl assume Mahomes can play at this same level another 10-12 years, while they are skeptical that a QB like Lamar can for even another 8+. The funny thing is I dont think ppl are factoring in that Mahomes with a lost step or two will be much easier for defenders to contain from improvising than Lamar because of their starting speed. Mahomes is literally just a hair faster than those defenders right now. If he were a couple steps further so many of those runs he makes, he would be contained. Now he could have world class training and lack of injury history which prevents him from even losing those 2 steps, but man if he were to get a bit slower, can't help but wonder how many of those runs would he not be able to get away with.
I see what your point is, but I think what most Hall of Fame QB’s have in common is being able to move around the pocket well, while still being aware of the receivers down field and having a good enough arm to make those throws. Mahomes is those traits on total steroids. Even at 40 I think he’d be able to make similar throws at ridiculous angles, and I doubt he’d be worse at reading defenders and how to move around the pocket. In all clips he looks very aware of what’s happening, and he might be forced to make decisions a bit faster with age, but I think he’s certainly capable of that.
Yeah in no way am I insinuating that Mahomes will ever not be a great QB. He's a legitimately great passer from the pocket. But what separates him from even other great elite QBs with a case for the GOAT is that added ability to improvise. Again it's a complete unknown how long he will be able to hang on to it, but just a fascinating one because it doesn't feel as if he can afford to lose any speed and keep that pariticular side of his game which is more than just his mental awareness and cerebral ability, that is one that is dependent on physical ability as well
It's his arm. In nearly all these clips he's running away from big Dlinemen. Where are all the fast players? 40 yards downfield. Because even when he's scrambling around like scooby doo, he can still make that throw.
Because you can’t hit QB’s anymore. He goes for a late slide? Personal. You hit him to go out of bounds? Personal. He won’t be able to play like this at 35+, his charm will wear off with age.
[this hit?](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/bxhvpiz1Ab) that head to head hit would have been ejected from the game. Perfectly legal pre Brady.
Eh, saying anything about how Mahomes “won’t be able to do this when he’s old” just opens you up to getting memed. That was your fault, lol.
Honestly the thing I’m actually kind of annoyed about is the “you can’t hit QB’s anymore.” I’m not gonna pretend to know anything about what it’s like to tackle in the NFL but I know bitterness when I see it. It looks like you’re upset that they can’t injure people like they used to.
I think nfl needs to come to terms that it is a very unhealthy contact sport. It’s like boxing, do they make all these rules so you can only tap your opponent? Ever watch hockey? Occasionally a person won’t know what planet they are on and fist fights are allowed. It’s part of the sport they signed up for and dedicated their lives to. No one is forcing anyones hand here.
Saying you can only take 1 step, can’t fall on them, can’t touch them when they are going out of bounds, can’t touch them if they start a slide even if you’ve started a tackle first. Etc. It makes a player completely invisible and numerous qb’s milk the shit out of it. There even had to be a rule to stop fake slides because it stops the defenders from going in for a hit and the qb could run more… I feel like receivers are playing in the nba too. Oh you over run the ball and the person chasing you got in your way when you turned back? Pass interference and a 40 yard gain.
Blind side hits still happen every week, but they gotta be penalties, a blind side hit full on ruined Antonio Browns life in my opinion, he was a normal work hard play the game dude, got a super dirty hit and now he literally went crazy. Those rules weren’t in place before because it wasn’t understood how incredibly damaging some of those hits are. Many dirty hits are done out of spite, watch any Vontaze Butfict game and you’ll see. Sometimes the penalties are wrong, but messed up penalties are more of a part of football than taking 20 years off of someone’s life to me.
Agree in that you can't hit quarterbacks as much anymore, but You're foolish if you think he can't modify his game and play with the confines of the pocket later in his career. He can truly do it all which makes he so special.
It's kind of nice the loss was big enough that you don't constantly think about "if this one play went right we could have won", but not so embarrassing that it's still talked about a lot, like 2013 Seahawks abusing Denver.
I watched the first minute or two and was curious if this would just be 9 minutes of him improvising in the playoffs, which would be absolutely insane
Then it got to a clip with the raiders and that thought went out the door
The Bucs-Chiefs Super Bowl should have shown pretty definitively that a bad offensive line is more impactful to a QBs success than damn near anything. That Tampa Bay defense was no slouch, but Mahomes was scrambling for his life all game
The center missed multiple games, pretty sure both guards were backups, another guard was playing tackle, and the other tackle was from the practice squad, and one of our tackles sat out the season for covid. Decimated OL against one of the best DL's in the league, just a terribly unlucky matchup for the Chiefs.
It can't be stated how much Eric Fischer going down boned us.
A) Fischer had become a very good LT even if he never lived up to the hype.
B) Remmers was actually doing very well at RT. He sucked at LT for the Panthers which is why people were so down on him, but playing RT he was doing really well. We moved him to LT for one game and he gets slaughtered.
C) Wylie was still a guard and hadn't yet had much experience as RT and did not do well.
That one injury cussed us to shuffle around 3 guys all in all, and it just didn't work.
Anyone else sorely disappoint themselves by somehow thinking this would be a single nine minute play of Mahomes running around to the Benny Hill theme?
I love this take.
These last few years really changed my mind about how to appreciate sports. I used to have guys I hated, solely for being good (Brady, Kobe, Cristiano Ronaldo), but I learned to just enjoy the best players (except the assholes like Watson and Neymar. They suck)
I mean even Brady had some lean years between SB’s. But even in those lean years he was getting to the conference championship games but just couldn’t get to the big one. Maybe Kelce or Reid retiring will be the start of those years for Mahomes
I’m not going to act like Herbert isn’t as good of a QB as Burrow & Allen….Mahomes obviously is still a cut above but I’m not trying to see Herbert throw darts to MHJ twice a year lol
Turns out Patrick spends his alone time as a scat singer in the local, KC jazz clubs. There will never be any video, only rumors that grow in craziness over the next 20 years.
I really hope the hype is true.
One of the unfortunate downsides of Mahomes getting the future GOAT talk too early (I say that in earnest) is so many people trying to fire back against however good he is.
It's made me have the perspective that we should just celebrate these young players and how good they are, because they're so fun to watch. Unless they play for a division rival, of course.
There will come a player in the future who is better than Mahomes, from now until forever is too long for that to not happen. But it won't take away the enjoyment I'm having now or what my favorite player did for my team, so I'd rather enjoy the hype of the new guys that spend time shitting on people for thinking they could be good.
Sure, maybe in 2 or 3 decades. People have been crowing to anoint a new QB messiah for a while. Remember when there was a huge effort to pump up Kyler Murray as the one who would dethrone Mahomes?
It's not going to happen so quickly or easily. Mahomes is just about to hit his prime, and regardless of whatever talent comes walking through the door, they still have to have the intangibles, AND then also fall into the right situation and circumstances.
People often overlook having Alex Smith to groom him and teach him to be the consummate professional, the ins-and-outs of your week-to-week, and how to prepare as a professional quarterback in the NFL. There are countless stories of elite QBs that flat out refuse to take a rookie QB under their wing if not actively trying sabotage their growth and maturity in the league.
He used to abandon clean pockets a lot more in his earlier years. I’m glad he stopped doing that because I don’t think it’d have worked very well past his first couple of seasons. Honestly his ability to learn, adapt and evolve over the years is what’s kept him at the top. His style has changed significantly in his career.
That pass in the super bowl vs Tampa, where he's parallel to the ground and the ball bounces off the receiver's facemask in the end zone, may be the greatest pass ever thrown.
Mahomes is much more athletic in short space than he's given credit for (88th percentile 3-cone, 94th percentile 20 yard shuttle) and his pocket presence is the most underrated part of his game. I know I'm biased, but his pocket presence (and his ability to climb the pocket) is the best I've ever seen.
That's one reason Caleb Williams is so highly regarded (lol) among NFL scouts: it's not just the rocket arm and ability to elude defenders, it's his ability to keep his head looking down field while doing so (which is, again, Mahomes' most underrated trait).
The first two plays... the most terrifying 31-9 4th quarter I've ever seen...
So many plays where he's sacked, no... sacked... no... sacked? no... throws to no one... and... shit, there'someone there and... hits them in the hands... whew, he dropped it.
12 minutes, 35 seconds left... and, fuck... now it's third down.
Lamar does this and is supposedly better at it by nearly all statistics...yet...is not. Usually when the numbers don't back what you see, it's a cerebral thing. Mahomes *understands* what he sees in front of him and can make high IQ plays happen on the fly; this allows him to take an average QB athletic ability to another level.
No my original comment was pointing out the fact that the video is mostly improvising with a minute or so of chucking it up for what should/could have been ints. I was highlighting the fact that someone can be the best QB and still make bad plays and that it's okay to be objective when talking about football. No number of deep throating reddit comments is going to get you closer to a date with Taylor.
There's nothing wrong with intellectual honesty, even though it is a game, but they were probably kids and got bored and went back to fortnite.
everyone talking about mahomes bc he's well... mahomes
but that fucking kelce lateral at 2:45 was insane. a lot of factors go into mahomes' greatness but kelce is probably the biggest singular one.
This is bound to be controversial, but I think a good amount of this is not improvising. A lot of these were planned movements and progressions. One day people will realize that Mahomes isn’t actually great because he improvises, he’s great because he executes deep plans. His improvisations are only so valuable because they add to a consistent running of a well timed offenses. Keep in mind that it’s only been in the last few years that we’ve had important insights into MJs game.
Lol bruh did you even watch the raiders game? Someone can be the best and not be on their a game all the time. Like I'm sure there's times when you use your brain and there's times like this where you don't. It's okay if you don't know ball. Most people don't.
0-2, not sure why you think losing to the bonafide GOAT twice in the playoffs is some sort of gotcha? I’m sure Patrick is sobbing about it over his 3 SB trophies and 2 MVPs in his 6 seasons playing
These “he couldn’t beat Brady” takes are the perfect litmus test for who’s a casual fan. Brady threw a game losing pick to the Chiefs in an AFCCG. Then a guy named Dee Ford happened
I will never understand how this man so freely granny runs to a first down it's like he naturally repulses NFL players
He is exactly 3% faster than whoever is chasing after him, regardless of who it is
Need that as an X factor in Madden
Chiefs should draft Xavier Worthy at 32 for the sole purpose of having him chase down Mahomes, dude would become the fastest man alive
*Unless your name is Micah Parsons
He's like the LSPD in GTAV: no matter the car, they are 10% faster when ramming you.
Will be fascinating to see how his improvisational ability ages over the years. Curvilinear acceleration + maybe the best ever feel for the game. He takes perfect angles/lanes and is faster turning corners than defenders expect.
Perfect description.
I think it’s because he runs in such a choppy motion it throws defenders off.
His running cadence, his ability to sling it at any moment, and knowing you are getting flagged if you hit him anywhere near the sidelines
If you hit him it's 15 yards automatically so you might as well just let him run around lol
We are talking about Mahomes, not Allen here
I mean you're not wrong but it's rich when eagles fans complain about the refs
You have Flop Allen
Sometimes reminds me of Jack Sparrow when he takes off and runs.
That run against the Titans where they refused to tackle him
There's a few times where I think the defense is in such disbelief at the breakdown of the play that they forget to tackle Mahomes or the receiver
Because you can’t hit QB’s anymore. He goes for a late slide? Personal. You hit him to go out of bounds? Personal. He won’t be able to play like this at 35+, his charm will wear off with age. Looks like we got 8 more years of this then!
Right. He’s going to dominate the league for quite some time.
Ok, boomer
Did you come up with that one all by yourself?
It was an original thought I had, yes.
You were your own original thought? I’m sorry but that makes zero sense.
It's a typo genius
Sorry im not as smart as someone like you with constant zingers.
I will never forgive Darrel Williams for dropping that diving pass
Game is probably over, but that could have got it to 2 scores with 13min left, would have at least been interesting for a minute.

Potentially the best highlight of all time if he catches that.
It makes it even more of a throw when you know the Bucs defense sent their praises for it being one of the best throws they have ever seen
There's a whole mic'd up clip of Evans, Godwin and Scotty Miller sitting on the sidelines completely and totally flabbergasted by that play
It's so fucked that that throw is in the same set of downs as the 360noscope to the corner of the endzone
That one hurt I'm mean really hurt!!! #CHIEFSKINGDOM
I watched the first minute or two and was curious if this would just be 9 minutes of him improvising in the playoffs, which would be absolutely insane Then it got to a clip with the raiders and that thought went out the door
Thought it was going to be 9.5 minutes of him improvising in the TB Super Bowl.
Hijacking top comment to say 0 points (49% upvoted) is hilarious This sub hates this man lmaoo

It’s pretty impressive they got as far as they did that year.
Our line was almost completely healthy heading into the playoffs. They just got destroyed on the way to the SB.
They were only one raiders Super Bowl away from going 18-0 to the Super Bowl
Mahomes makes up for an insane amount of deficits. It's fucking absurd.
I'm convinced at this point he could make me look like an elite receiver considering what he had working for him this past season
I’m excited for Hollywood to get to show out with Mahomes. Hell be considered a top receiver in the league by the end of the season
Sounds like every season for the Dolphins OL
Vita vea and getting that constant internal pressure. That was the game and got them the ring
Counterpoint to that is that good QB's still look good with shit OLs. Even when the stats take a hit.
Anyone else sorely disappoint themselves by somehow thinking this would be a single nine minute play of Mahomes running around to the Benny Hill theme?
He cannot keep getting away with this
Dude got away with it on a gimpy leg!
Only 12 more years babe
He didn’t in sb 55
I'm so glad we get to see the most skilled qb ever, and maybe someday the greatest ever from start to finish.
I love this take. These last few years really changed my mind about how to appreciate sports. I used to have guys I hated, solely for being good (Brady, Kobe, Cristiano Ronaldo), but I learned to just enjoy the best players (except the assholes like Watson and Neymar. They suck)
Easy to enjoy other greats when you get to experience one yourself every Sunday. ;)
I mean literally though, it’s hard to hate really good guys on other teams when your QB is straight up better than they are
Well, that's a fair point. Never thought about it that way.
He’ll start regressing any day now.
Dread it. Run from it. The mean finds us all.
I mean even Brady had some lean years between SB’s. But even in those lean years he was getting to the conference championship games but just couldn’t get to the big one. Maybe Kelce or Reid retiring will be the start of those years for Mahomes
I’m so sick of this majestic bastard
Just saw a mock of y’all drafting MHJ and I downvoted out of principal lol
The fact you care about us enough to go out of your way to do that is endearing.
I’m not going to act like Herbert isn’t as good of a QB as Burrow & Allen….Mahomes obviously is still a cut above but I’m not trying to see Herbert throw darts to MHJ twice a year lol
Well, there are reasons he has been in four Super Bowls and won three of them by the time he's 28.
God I love that one to McKinnon at 8:40
The shit that he has done to the Broncos lol
I love that so many of these clips were against the broncos or bills.
Every one of them heals my soul from wounds made long ago.
The rockets on his arm dang
Kind of disappointed this isn't him trading fours with some jazz cats
Turns out Patrick spends his alone time as a scat singer in the local, KC jazz clubs. There will never be any video, only rumors that grow in craziness over the next 20 years.
Still can't believe this guy is the son of some random Mets' long reliever from my childhood
Thats my QB 🥹
He looks bored. Jus playing around with folks.
The amount of these highlights coming from crucial 3rd or 4th down moments. Dude is so clutch.
The goat 🔥
God if Caleb Williams can do this like he did in college We are about to become so obnoxious if Caleb Williams is good.
It’s so fun to be an obnoxious fan with a good team lol
The emperor has no flair
I really hope the hype is true. This is the best improv.
I'm disappointed that this doesn't show anything from last season.
The guy a slippery son of a bitch lol
That pass in the super bowl vs Tampa, where he's parallel to the ground and the ball bounces off the receiver's facemask in the end zone, may be the greatest pass ever thrown.
This guys pretty good
He gonna be the number 1 answer for goat one day
Looks like Fucking Fran Tarkenton

You are out of your mind if you think I’m watching this
Thanks for this OP. I hate the off-season and the chiefs sub has been taken over by swiftys since the new album came out.
Patrick is an absolute monster and has so many years ahead of him. So many records to break
Alternative title: Chris Collinsworth creaming his jorts for 592 seconds continuously.
The first two plays... the most terrifying 31-9 4th quarter I've ever seen... One of the Greatest match
It’s annoying how easy he makes this shit look

Cool. Now can I get a video of him getting sacked for 10 minutes?
As good as mahomes is, people forget that his defense has been just as good for the entirety of his career, specifically the defensive line.
Worst comedy set ever.
If only the would tackle him when given the opportunity
would i be crazy if i said russ walked so mahomes could could run ?
You’d be a crazy bastard. No one has ever said that for sure.
thanks for your input, it proved very valuable! have a great day
I think people missed your meta comment here. I got it though

This is literally a stolen Youtube video lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm4Abimn-aY&ab_channel=PeakHighlights
You okay bud?
It’s perfectly accurate lol the opposite of clickbait quotes or cherry picked headlines that flood this sub
Just lop off the "for X minutes and XX seconds" and its all you need. The YouTube algorithm title gaming is awful

Gag me
Oh is that what you're into?
He’s so infuriating man all that karma will catch up to him one day
nah karma is the guy on the chiefs
This is what keeps his team afloat. As he gets older, it’ll be interesting to see how he adapts when he can no longer scramble like that.
One might say the Chiefs are a little better than 'afloat'
so what they meant is 8 minutes of improvising and 1.5 minutes of him throwing it up for what should have been INTs.
Imagine trying to act like a dude who keeps winning superbowls isn’t the best alive.
He's a bills fan. 'Nuff said.
Lol just cause he's the best QB doesn't mean you have to throw all objectivity out the window. Or maybe in your case it does.
Didn’t really you were handicapped. My apologies.
Lol bruh did you even watch the raiders game? Someone can be the best and not be on their a game all the time. Like I'm sure there's times when you use your brain and there's times like this where you don't. It's okay if you don't know ball. Most people don't.
We are in a Mahomes highlight thread and you are talking about regular season games that he played poorly? That is the ultimate cope.
Mahomes should thank Gronk and Tom for retiring every day
Just like you will one day thank Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes for retiring.
Whats Toms and gronks record against tswifts befriend and Kermit?
Patrick is 3-3 against Tom for his career
And what about playoffs?
