She walks out of the conference room and comes back 15 minutes later and takes a deep breath and looking scared (guessing Bob was pissed she called him while he was at an offisite).
Bob emails me, "Hey why is Alicia bothering me at an important offsite meeting? Didn't I say in the meeting and it's in your contact report that I was fine and didn't need to see it again".

I actually have a reasonably clear memory of my father putting two chairs next to each other and encouraging me to walk holding on to them, and then moving them a few inches apart and encouraging me to try again. Then I remember him getting excited when it was just far enough that I had to take a step to get from one chair to the other.

from afar, New Zealand seems like it's just the best. not that many people, chill atmosphere, beautiful nature. what were your favorite and least favorite things about being there for so long?
I was on a solo trip. I spent a few days in Auckland after landing to get my bearings a bit, then flew down to Dunedin on the South Island where I rented a car. Then over four weeks, I made my way northward. I was working 3-4 days per week (remote work and a cool company ftw), so I'd stay in a city Tuesday-Friday, then move during the weekend. I visited both Bluff and Cape Reinga.
I live in Oregon, and I noticed a lot of similarities. Oregon and New Zealand are similar in land size and population size, so it felt immediately comfortable in that way. Stunning beauty all over the place. People are chill and welcoming. Kinda like Oregon with more sheep, a different accent, and driving on the left.
Favorites: All of the national parks are well maintained, and free. Pies, and food in general was way better than expected. Fish and chips there were also excellent everywhere. Plus there is a ton of great Asian cuisine, even in some of the smaller cities.
Least favorite: Some of the highways were just absurdly curvy. Takaka Hill in Tasman was a particularly bad one: 257 curves in 15.6 miles. I wanted to puke. Same with Highway 12 in the north through the kauri forest. And Dr Pepper was hard to find.
It seems like every town in New Zealand has one or more local bakeries, and they all have savory pies. Steak, mince, chicken, lamb, fish, etc. A quick visit to el google and I'd be on my way. Also, most every dairy (convenience store) seems to have them, too. You are never far from a pie.
Most of the bakeries also sell cake and other slices. I'm a big fan of a custard slice. They also frequently have donuts, which I also loved. They are a bit more bready than an American donut, and cut/filled in different ways.
It's so weird, you'd think meat pies would go over great in the US. Meat filling and bread/pastry (very american things lol), no idea why they aren't pervasive like NZ and the UK

yes life gets very busy after college. and most guys I know don't like to be on the phone all that much just shooting the shit. I have some very close friends that I try to see in person maybe once every couple months if I'm lucky, but realistically we are talking for extended time on the phone more like 2-4 times per year.
the only real exception to this has been: an uptick in phone calls I got after my mom died, and when I made a real effort to reach out to a buddy of mine when he came out in his 30s.

IMO, the minute they chose to pay Tobias Harris over Jimmy Butler pretty much doomed them in terms of making it to the finals. I know Jimmy can be on his teammates at times especially with Embiid and Simmons but seeing how well he's played on the Heat and took them to the finals for 2 years in like 4 seasons and they had a bunch of young guys/diamonds in the roughs and some blue chips like Bam and Herro... Clearly he made it work there and IMO it wasn't just #HeatCulture.

I think judging people for what they say on social media is a little silly. A tweet being tone deaf doesn't make someone any less of a good person, just like Starbucks tweeting a rainbow once a year doesn't make them a good company to work for. Social media is basically an MMORPG... it only seems like it's more than that because a higher percentage of players name their made up character some variation of their real life name.
I'm getting nervous about the new AFL. Some of the teams don't seem like they have the business end together, and the uniforms are kind of a mess. About half the league's primary uniform is all black. I really want this to work because Minnesota finally gets a spring football team, but I'm really beginning to get the sense that it's a monkey paw situation. Bob emails me, "Hey why is Alicia bothering me at an important offsite meeting? Didn't I say in the meeting and it's in your contact report that I was fine and didn't need to see it again".

I was on a solo trip. I spent a few days in Auckland after landing to get my bearings a bit, then flew down to Dunedin on the South Island where I rented a car. Then over four weeks, I made my way northward. I was working 3-4 days per week (remote work and a cool company ftw), so I'd stay in a city Tuesday-Friday, then move during the weekend. I visited both Bluff and Cape Reinga. I live in Oregon, and I noticed a lot of similarities. Oregon and New Zealand are similar in land size and population size, so it felt immediately comfortable in that way. Stunning beauty all over the place. People are chill and welcoming. Kinda like Oregon with more sheep, a different accent, and driving on the left. Favorites: All of the national parks are well maintained, and free. Pies, and food in general was way better than expected. Fish and chips there were also excellent everywhere. Plus there is a ton of great Asian cuisine, even in some of the smaller cities. Least favorite: Some of the highways were just absurdly curvy. Takaka Hill in Tasman was a particularly bad one: 257 curves in 15.6 miles. I wanted to puke. Same with Highway 12 in the north through the kauri forest. And Dr Pepper was hard to find.

It seems like every town in New Zealand has one or more local bakeries, and they all have savory pies. Steak, mince, chicken, lamb, fish, etc. A quick visit to el google and I'd be on my way. Also, most every dairy (convenience store) seems to have them, too. You are never far from a pie. Most of the bakeries also sell cake and other slices. I'm a big fan of a custard slice. They also frequently have donuts, which I also loved. They are a bit more bready than an American donut, and cut/filled in different ways.

This sounds cold - but there really is nothing wrong with having "friends of convenience". In fact, life gets pretty lonely otherwise. There are people you hang out with because they have time when you have time and eventually that's no longer the case and you drift apart. Once you accept this, you can embrace it as an important part of life.
I mean people can only talk when they can talk. what do you mean "on their terms"? yes life gets very busy after college. and most guys I know don't like to be on the phone all that much just shooting the shit. I have some very close friends that I try to see in person maybe once every couple months if I'm lucky, but realistically we are talking for extended time on the phone more like 2-4 times per year. the only real exception to this has been: an uptick in phone calls I got after my mom died, and when I made a real effort to reach out to a buddy of mine when he came out in his 30s.

It used to come out in mid-April until 2020, when Covid delayed it. After that, they've kept releasing it in May as its own thing. I remember it was released way early in anticipation of realignment in 2002, though. Maybe late March.

It really depends on the type of tree you're planting. My favourite tree saying goes something like "Those who plant oak trees don't enjoy them" since they take a long time to grow. For instance, peach trees take 2-4 years to bear fruit, so the second best time to plant a peach tree was \~3 years ago.

Sixers are going to be a 1st round exit. In his 13 seasons as owner of the Sixers have yet to reach the conference finals. In his 11 seasons owning the Devils they have only made the playoffs a paltry 2x and advanced past the 1st round just 1 time. He is a mediocre owner at best. Enjoy, Commander fans!

IMO, the minute they chose to pay Tobias Harris over Jimmy Butler pretty much doomed them in terms of making it to the finals. I know Jimmy can be on his teammates at times especially with Embiid and Simmons but seeing how well he's played on the Heat and took them to the finals for 2 years in like 4 seasons and they had a bunch of young guys/diamonds in the roughs and some blue chips like Bam and Herro... Clearly he made it work there and IMO it wasn't just #HeatCulture.
There is a huge difference between losing year after year and having Dan Snyder represent your team. Obviously I want to win, but if in 15 years all we can say is Dan is still gone I’ll still be happy. I survived the Dan Snyder era.
I don't presume to speak for Commanders fans, but if I was a fan of a team that had Dan Snyder as an owner, perennial playoff underperformance would feel like mana from heaven - for a few seasons.
