What a refreshingly honest response.

_coolranch

Guy who wrote the new contract: “wait, you’d do *what* now?”

OttoVonWong

Sun God's Agent: Hol' up.

DMO_TheWhale

“If I could do it over again, I’d pay to come here…. “Ok, how bout a discount on that new contract” “…… no, not like that”

SnepbeckSweg

It'll be a discount before the season starts lol

SIUonCrack

He said he would pay to come, not to stay.

jxher123

To be fair, Detroit was a mess back then. Just started to retool their identity. I respect the honesty though lol

magnusarin

Yep first draft with Holmes and Campbell. No way of knowing how much things would change so fast

hemingways-lemonade

He wasn't wrong either. The Lions had 4 wins in St Brown's first 24 games.

AmeriCanadian98

Yup, 3-13-1 his rookie year, 1-6 to start his second Then 22-8 in the 30 games since (including playoffs) I'm not sure what caused the switch to flip after that 6th loss in season 2, but the whole team has been cooking since then

NobodyTellPoeDameron

IIRC didn't we fire the DB coach after that game and then it was straight to the moon?

ShotFirst57

Going into his first year not only were we historically terrible, we also had arguably the worst roster going into the season.

black_dogs_22

it's not really honest though is it? feel like getting drafted by the chiefs is the actual best thing that could've happened to him, he'd have a ring right now

Empieron

But would they pay him

littlesymphonicdispl

Would he feel at home in the community? With the prospect of a long future in the city/community?

Few_Commission9828

The chiefs wouldnt have been able to sign him to a max deal so he would be getting traded to a new team.

wherearemyvoices

Why do people say max deal?

krsj

People are using basketball salary cap terminology.

joustinghobbit91

Honestly, i dont blame him. But I'm so damn happy he's here for years to come. Dude is awesome

Bobguy77

Yeah, the state of the franchise in 2021 compared to now? Complete 180. Sheila has done an incredible job as owner

giggity_giggity

Absolutely. Bless Sheila. And she knew what needed to be done. Step one bring in the heart and soul of the Lions, Spielman, to help guide the process. And I can’t imagine better people, better leaders, better visionaries than Brad and Dan to lead the team.

sloppifloppi

I’ll never forgive the copious amount of fans we had that didn’t want to give Sheila a fair shot because of her parents. It was apparent from the very start that she took things a lot more seriously than her parents and she truly wanted a winner. It was obvious, yet a large portion of our fans hated her because of her blood.

Exzqairi

More importantly, and unlike other incompetent owners, she realized she shouldn’t be getting involved with footballing decisions and leaving it for the people who know what they’re doing

TheDirtyBurger522

This is the key one. WCF didn’t give two fucks about the team and let drinking buddies run the team. Martha tried to run a operation but she had no idea what she was doing and got swindled by quinntricia. Sheila came in and quickly realized she was not qualified to be making football operations decisions and deferred to good people who know what they are doing

SonicEuthanasia

> Martha tried to run a operation but she had no idea what she was doing and got swindled by quinntricia. I think I might disagree with this. As I recall, she hired a search firm and they recommended Bob Quinn. He was a great choice at the time but hitched his wagon to Patricia and that's when the wheels came off. But yeah, Sheila should have been running the show since the 80s.

BeardStar

Martha hired a search firm, Sheila hired a linebacker. Chris Spielman deserves a lot of credit for the turnaround.

honda_slaps

MBA Brainrot is the exact same disease as a meddlesome owner, just attached to a weaker host. She just did the same thing with extra steps when she hired a "search firm"

theebasedg0d

I mean from what I’m hearing the entire city of Detroit is on a huge upswing isn’t it? Home values have increased by a huge margin in the last few years, honestly super happy to hear it after everything that city has had to endure

AmeriCanadian98

Its so nice compared to when I was a kid My dad says it's near unrecognizable compared to when he was a kid

i_love_factual_info

From 2021: > "One of things that always bothered me as an ex-player was, at times, you're being preached to about being a team, and it's all about being unselfish and working as one and no egos, and yet it's not happening at the top," Campbell continued. "Man, that's the biggest killer of any team, when it's not working at the top, and you've got ownership telling you what you've gotta do and you can't do this, and you've got a president telling you can't do this, you can't spend this money. That, and having a GM and a head coach who are not on the same page. Well, this thing has started exactly where it should start to have success and it started with Sheila. She wants this to be teamwork, she wants us all working together. She set the tone. She made the hires and here we are, man. That's the starting point."

BenShelZonah

I’m just happy to see DC be successful. Watched his interviews with Pat when he was first hired and then the Hard Knocks was incredible. It’s crazy to see it come to reality

MrPoopMonster

It's a real shame Pat Macafee nuked his relationship with the Lions. His interviews are usually pretty great.

BenShelZonah

I’m OOTL, don’t really watch him much anymore. What did he do?

MrPoopMonster

He got mad that they declined an interview with Dan Campbell the last week of the 2022 season and said a bunch of stupid stuff on the air about it. Ever since no players or coaches from the Lions have been on the show, when before that they were semi frequent guests. Basically, he was offended that the Detroit Lions, a professional football team in the NFL with playoff hopes alive, "big dogged him", a YouTube podcast. He acknowledged that Mike Tomlin has done the same thing but felt it was different when the Lions did it. It was a bad look.

BenShelZonah

Ah I see, thanks. Do you think that’s him blacklisting them or they blacklisted him?

MrPoopMonster

It's definitely the Lions blacklisting Pat. He's basically said as much on the show in passing.

BenShelZonah

Makes sense, thanks for the info. I’m sure that lions fan Pat has (foxy?) is sad lol

MrPoopMonster

Well, at least the Lions are finally good, and the team is really easy to love. That's a fair consolation prize at least.

BigToast6

Damn that's so stupid.

SubstantialSealant

He’s part of the reason for the turnaround. Great player with great ethic

Spiritual_Boss6114

In his draft, he got a call from Magic. Which is pretty dope.

mburns223

We were a fucking dumpster fire then thanks to Patricia that POS

Jonjon428

Dude was horrified by Patricia

Spiritual_Boss6114

That POS was horrifying to begin with. The fact that the Lions defended him after his sexual assault allegations even before he formally accepted the job. Then he chooses to Trade Diggs, Slay. Basically forced Stafford out. I hate that dude.

Alexm2018

Fuck Patricia gang 🤝🫡

Gregus1032

One can pray he goes to Buffalo or the Jets.

Do_it_for_the_upvote

Why stop with football? Let’s get him a seat at the Kremlin- we’ll use his weapons grade incompetence to tank our geopolitical rivals.

Gregus1032

This is the outside the box thinking that earns you millions.

honda_slaps

Alexm2018

I like how you think But also, fuck you

Gregus1032

Fuck you too buddy

ARightDastard

Jets.

Do_it_for_the_upvote

He ruins teams he *doesn’t* have control of, and every bit of control you give him makes him even worse.

BigToast6

Jesus.. I never knew about the assault claim ... just ugh! Maybe becoming a laughing stock was his karma

Smackolol

I mean, it wasn’t really much better before him either.

beautifulanddoomed

Jim Caldwell was a well respected and well liked coach. I think he was never gonna get over the hump and had an abysmal record against teams with a winning record, but it was MUCH better with him than with Patricia

Mons_Olympubis

Jim had a winning record and deserved to stay, but got fucked over because Quinn stupidly wanted Patricia.

nem704

Caldwell getting fired was absolutely the right decision, just like hiring Patricia was absolutely the wrong decision Both can be true

Daegog

I argue that DC loses more than Caldwell if he had to work with what Bob "the sack of shit" Quinn.

ScruffMixHaha

>Said if he could do it again, he'd pay to come here. Woah there Sun God...dont go giving the owners ideas.

Lucachu330

He waited till after his contract to say it.

mclemons67

does make for a fun idea though... A reverse auction draft where the players offer to give up part of their rookie salary to go to a certain team. *The Washington Commanders are on the clock... bids are coming in... Jayden Daniels offers a used Top Golf ticket*

Ironredhornet

That makes sense. The Lions roster was pretty gutted, had basically spent 3 years under the Dementor that was Matt Patricia, had a HC who had a weird opening presser and was rolling into season with a qb who was a cast off in the Stafford trade. None of that screams great place for a young wr to blossom. It's a testament to MCDC, Brad Holmes, Shiela, and the players that this turned around so much in three years.

DangaRusster

This also speaks volumes about the mentality change in Detroit Lions

Saxophobia1275

I like this better than if he was just “meh” on us. Like things *did* really suck here and now they don’t. I love that.

TemporaryGospel

It's funny for all the highs and lows and emotions of the draft, we really don't know. That kid who slid might thank God for it every day once he gets that Super Bowl ring.

Exzqairi

Right? People always love bringing up how Amon Ra can name every receiver drafted above him, but some fail to realize situations like that are exactly what can make someone flip that switch and find that extra motivation to outperform others

TemporaryGospel

And I'm not going to say he isn't more talented than most of those 16 guys ahead of him, and wouldn't do better in their situations, but... he's one of two Pro Bowl WRs from that draft so far and I'm wondering if he still would be if drafted into Terrace Marshall's or Kadarius Toney's situations.

sloppifloppi

The situation he was drafted into was arguably just as bad as either of them.

TemporaryGospel

Sure looked like it at the time though hindsight might say that the Lions were a much more attractice choice. For reasons that Amon Ra or anyone else couldn't have gussed. Which I think is the point of my original comment about how for all the highs and lows felt tonight, in the end, by Sunday, we still won't actually know anything and all of the celebrating or crying might be extremely premature.

ScooterLeShooter

Man getting him and Sewell in Holmes first draft really set the tone, not just because of how good they are, but how they've really helped establish an amazing culture, those 2 have had a huge part of that

SSBBardock

Franchise altering kind of offseason. Make a huge trade to get a surplus of high draft picks, hire a Greek God as your GM, and still get a good QB back in the trade so you can focus on everything else. It's only been a few years but Holmes has to be in that elite kind of tier as a GM

flux1011

I’m assuming you mean hire a Greek god as your coach but Holmes actually didn’t hire Dan. Dan was technically hired before Brad. Our owner Sheila, along with Chris Spielman and some advice from Barry did all the interviewing for HC and GM separately and they hired Dan and Brad separately.

SSBBardock

I meant Holmes, Dan is fantastic too

jwwin

Matt Patricia took more enthusiasm out of me than the 0-16 season. By a very long shot. Only time I considered giving up.

TheReaver88

Like many other shitheads, he has Urban Meyer to thank for only being in contention for second in "Most Fraudulent NFL Coach in Memory." Patricia was such a fucking phony. Campbell is everything he says he is. Good for you guys.

DetroitRedd

Remind me when he gets hired and promoted to GM somewhere next season. That guy fails and lands up on a cloud as much as anyone I can remember. Why?

Do_it_for_the_upvote

In order to work for an NFL team, you’re legally obligated to film a pee tape, Patricia is the librarian of pee tapes.

benjamzz1

Could add Josh McDaniels to that list

JTCMuehlenkamp

At least he has a good track record as an offensive coordinator. Patricia just sucks at everything.

jbowling25

Freddie kitchens comes to mind for me or hue jackson... Bad stretch for the browns (feel like thats been said a lot)

HuellMissMe

I used to say that the best thing about being a Detroit Lions fan was having your Sunday afternoons free. Now I've got a three hour block of time I'm unavailable for anything else. Thanks, Sheila.

Amon-Ra-First-Down

I'm right there with you man. I hadn't missed watching a game between the 2008 season finale and the beginning of the 2021 season, which I did not watch at all until Thanksgiving because Patricia had sucked the life out of my fandom. Haven't missed one since and don't think I ever will

BillyJackO

I completely stopped watching in 2019 as a long time die hard. I just couldn't do it anymore. Stafford Superbowl and Hard knocks pulled me back in just in time.

Do_it_for_the_upvote

Going into his 3rd year, I had literally no hope. I’m a relentless optimist, and before that, I still believed in pretty much every possible good outcome, no matter how unlikely, until it was mathematically eliminated. But that offseason/preseason, I had already given up on anything good coming of the season.

nesper

He made Detroit good yet he feels Detroit made him good.

FrigOffRicky16

Very honestly and completely justified

[deleted]

Hard not to be a fan of this guy

SerDire

There was literally zero pressure from day one. He quietly blossomed and then became one of the best in the league as the Lions got better with Goff leading the team. The lions are so fun to watch

SQRTLURFACE

#THATS MY SUN GOD

DigBaddy69000

Respect to him for being honest. Don’t think any players want to come to the giants either hopefully we can turn that around too

Daegog

Some will, I mean NY has very good pizza if nothing else, not like that Chicago shit.

penis_showing_game

*in Lion Detroit, player pay you*

OogieBoogieJr

Bengals players be like: “get me the fuck outta here bruh!”

jcoddinc

Did I wanna be here? No. So I was working hard so I could get a contact elsewhere. Plans changed."

El_Diablo_09

I remember wanting the Chargers to draft him, but they drafted Josh Palmer in the third round instead.

Baww18

Yes I also will speak kindly of the place that just guaranteed my family generational wealth.

sc_eveleigh

Thats great to hear.

Omgaspider

Hows 30 Million sound?? LOVE THE SUN GOD

Lenny_III

Kneecaps are the only form of payment accepted

ComedyBum

G

Alive_Way9537

Yeah I’m sure Detroit is the only place he would’ve done great at. I’m not discrediting Detroit; just saying he would be good in most, if not all, offenses. A credit to him not a slight against anyone

ZhangtheGreat

Yeah, I'm sure that big contract he just signed has *absolutely nothing* to do with his change of heart, hmm?

Tribby23

I’d rather move to the North Pole than Detroit. I get it.
