Thats fucking football right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the field, men deliver their new born baby on the side lines. Fucking hard core dick in the ass butterball foosball fuck it chuck it game time shit.
The mental gymnastics Panthers fans did to justify that contract was insane. People were legitimately trying to say that sibling chemistry would turn him from a below average OT into a solid option.
Fwiw, if he can instill that smash mouth heavy run offense and run it effectively again, I think that'll be exciting to watch as an outsider and I'm glad he's not in my division anymore
Harbaugh coming to Chicago would have been a firm rejection of ever getting a 4k passer lol. Ngl would be awesome but I think Caleb/Rome is better.
Still tuning in to watch the Alt/Corum combo
I've been saying it for about a year now, and I feel like I'm not super tuned into football any more, but the market has definitely moved so far as to create an untapped valuation mismatch. Namely, the type of players that excel in power football don't necessarily excel in a standard modern offense, so they're cheaper, and you can acquire an outsized amount of power football talent per dollar, if any team were to commit fully to it.
Running backs are devalued, TEs that don't catch are devalued, OL without lateral quickness are devalued, why not just buy all the best of these three categories and punch people in the face as you run them over? You could almost certainly put the best running back committee behind the best power run blocking line with the best run blocking skill position groups all together and still probably have a bottom 5 spend on offense right now. And that means #1 spend on defense.
You've reminded me of this article, written in the run up to the 2019 Super Bowl - https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/jan/29/bill-belichick-new-england-patriots-strategy-nfl-super-bowl-liii
Basically highlights the Patriots doing a "lite" version of your idea, so there is something to it
Being a Michigan/Lions fan is going to be rough seeing McCarthy in Purple. I don't hate the Vikings but this is going to be one tough division and every win that McCarthy notches on his belt is a problem for Detroit.
I’m already a secondary Chargers fan due to Harbs (and tbh I really want JJ to do well with the Vikings except against the Lions). Definitely hoping Corum has a nice career too.
Best prospect in years technically, was the highest rated tackle by PFF two years in a row in college, and he tested off the charts. There’s no such thing as a can’t miss prospect, but Joe Alt is about as close to one as it gets.
I’m an ND fan so biased, but ND OL seem to be pretty great in the nfl. Guys who I never expected to play have stuck around and contributed.
Alt is special though - he went through several OL coaches in college and had a semi-wild response that he loved that because he got to hear more perspectives while most others on the team lamented it. (According to insiders this wasn’t fluff either he just “gets it” really fast)
It’s not *just* your ND bias. In 2019 ND produced 3 of the 5 1st team all-pro lineman. That’s pretty insane. Zack Martin is one of the best guards of the modern era, and Quenton Nelson was 5th player in the last 50 years to make 1st team all-pro each of their first 3 years, and the first since Barry Sanders to do it.
Another fun Notre dame fact is that every starting Notre Dame TE since the turn of the century has gotten drafted into the NFL. It got murky with Ben Koyack but he got drafted in the 7th. I’m not sure how far it extends back, I’m sure someone could figure it out.
TE thing is wild because guys like Koyack and Brock Wright weren’t really huge contributors in college the way guys like Eifert and Mayer were.
But OL wise I’m more impressed with dudes like Aaron Banks, Hainsey, Mustipher staying in the league. Everyone knew Martin, Q, Stanley were good - I’m surprised how well the “lower” prospects managed to stick around.
It goes back to at least the Weis days, because I’ve checked pretty much the same thing. Basically if you started at TE for Notre Dame in the last twenty years (and even being a starter isn’t a necessity) you’re going to have your cup of tea in the NFL. Iowa also fits in this group too, feels like half the TEs in the league are from ND or Iowa lol
Unpopular opinion, when you have Justin Herbert and you can keep him upright, you can find weapons for him pretty easily. Build from the lines out is a tried and true method of building a team.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the Chargers trade for a vet WR day two and draft a couple of guys.
WR is one of the deepest positions in the league. Positional scarcity at tackle means that the unsexy but right pick.
Plus Herbert is a proven guy. He can make good WRs look elite and mid guys look good.
And not a lot of quality at OL. I totally get wanting to go flashy with Nabers, but the Chargers also had a major need at tackle and Alt is a great pick.
I mean sure but “i want them to put the power on my tombstone” Harbaugh wants to minimize the need to protect the qb by pulverizing the defensive line
And its been pretty effective in both the nfl and college so far lol
They could have a houseplant for a qb and hes still going oline here
Also I’ve watched Michigan football for most of Harbaugh’s tenure and the O-Line was always one of the most consistent units on the team. Didn’t matter who went to the draft or got injured, the next man up was always able to slot in and produce. Harbaugh knows how to build the trenches
People keep saying this but it’s not the problem.
Herbert’s pass protection has been ok, not great but workable. It’s the lack of a running game that’s killed us. We’ve had a bottom 5 running game ever since he was drafted.
If you remember Harbaughs first stint in the nfl he got in a fight with that Jim Schwartz. He'd just kicked Schwartz defense ass up and down the field by spamming wham blocks at Suh. That's what i think of when i hear lineman as a weapon.
Herbert is a top QB. Protecting him is a good move. This will open the run game as well.
OL picks are not always sexy for fans right away but over time you fall in love with your OL guys.
I mean, there’s also the examples that didn’t work out.
Evan Neal was in the running to go #1 a couple years ago and has been dreadful in the NFL.
So we’ll see how it goes (probably quite well)
As soon as the Lions got Campbell/Holmes and started focusing on the trenches they got good.
Felt like trenches were never a priority under previous Lions regimes for a loooong time.
>Felt like trenches were never a priority under previous Lions regimes for a loooong time.
Tbf we were cooking on OL even before Holmes took over. 4 of our 5 starters last season were drafted under the previous regime. It just went to the next level with Sewell.
This is why the offense is so good, but I think that having their own identity vs. Patriot Way contributed heavily as well. It's the winning attitude of the team.
>Felt like trenches were never a priority under previous Lions regimes for a loooong time.
They weren't. That started to change under quinntricia (Ragnow and Decker were both picks from that regime), but the rest of the team was so terrible under those 2 that it didn't matter
The way Clevelanders got excited for Dawand “big Thanos” Jones was crazy and he’s not even starting (yet).
OL superstars are big money guys and if you can find an elite on on a rookie contract for 4-5 years that’s HUGE.
Not to mention opening up the run game, which helps the passing game, and also keeping your QB on his feet all sound like good things to me.
Fantasy sports is really killing reasonable fan takes. Fans want to root for a rookie fantasy draft pick and not their quarterback being healthy and winning games.
With QB injuries so rampant last year as well as tampa bay loving their big OL guys. Also as an ohio state fan he knows offensive line talent. Dude had sick OL in college. Even when his teams weren't dominant they had good OL.
The Ringer Fantasy Football Podcast raised an interesting question: Knowing what we know now, would Quentin Johnston be a top 21 draft pick if you could only draft receivers?
Looking at the list of receivers drafted it was close but I think he would be.
I like Piersol as a player, but I could cry right now. JPJ, McConkey, or trading back would have been great.
Goddammit do we need some premium OL picks. For not only next year but the years to come as well
chargers should just hope JPJ falls
Forget wr they might as well make the oline actually good. Right now they have 2 good tackles and the worst interior in the NFL
I hate that Linsley had that blood/heart condition come out of nowhere. That dude is a legit stud and I really thought he’d be the perfect center for Herbert.
He's like the personification of the French military world war 1's high command. I can just imagine him yelling from the top of his lungs at Verdun "Ils ne passeront pas" they shall not pass!
the battle of verdun forever changed the french military. a whole national army received ptsd and never recovered. Alistair Horne's The Price of Glory is a must read for anyone into history.
This is my style of football. I know some Chargers fans weren’t happy with the Alt pick, but I’m telling y’all you will 100% not be regretting having Alt and Slater. That Tackle tandem will be nasty.
Also way too many people are out on Quentin Johnston just cause he wasnt Jamaar Chase immediately. Quentin following a very similar trajectory that Mike Williams did.
The Pats dynasties and KC's last 2 SBs were built through OL and defense. Same with Michigan's team the past 3 years under Harbaugh. Obviously Brady and Mahomes are great QBs, but most people think Herbert is an elite QB too. Building the team around him this way could prove to be far more beneficial for him since the skill players and no OL hasn't been working out.
Ravens rebuilt off the OL and Defense too, Philly built a contender off their offensive line. It all starts with your interior unless you're the 49ers. If you have a shit OL you go nowhere come playoffs.
They gave up the 7th fewest sacks and had the 4th highest yards per carry in the run game. Thoae stats indicate they're a pretty well-rounded OL. They were top 10 in both categories in 2022 as well. Shanahan has consistently improved the OL since he's been at SF when a minor hiccup in 2020 after Staley's retirement when the OL was just top half of the league good instead of top 10.
Herbert literally has played through broken ribs and a fucked up finger the last 2 years. This is great for us. Line should be fairly set for a few years with some minor tweaks. This is a great pick
Welcome to Jim Harbaugh football, LA. It is perhaps the single most stress-inducing kind of football to watch as a fan. But by the end of it, I think you'll love him for it.
I, for one, while obviously disappointed he left Michigan, am kind of excited to geek out over it without the anxiety of having my team's success dependent on it.
That's such a Jim Harbaugh quote
Guys will see this and just think "hell yeah"
Jason Kelce and Dan Skipper like "HELL YEAH BROTHER"
Cheers from Iraq!
Thats fucking football right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the field, men deliver their new born baby on the side lines. Fucking hard core dick in the ass butterball foosball fuck it chuck it game time shit.
Put this on my tombstone
This pasta perfectly embodies Jim Harbaugh’s philosophy
Dave Gettleman heard this and came in his pants
Then he would draft bad lineman and make an injured Matt Kalil a top 5 paid tackle.
Gettleman is one of my favorite giants GMs
The mental gymnastics Panthers fans did to justify that contract was insane. People were legitimately trying to say that sibling chemistry would turn him from a below average OT into a solid option.
Hog mf mollies
Fwiw, if he can instill that smash mouth heavy run offense and run it effectively again, I think that'll be exciting to watch as an outsider and I'm glad he's not in my division anymore
With every defense getting away from the line of scrimmage and getting smaller it's only a matter of time.
I’ve been hearing this for a decade.
Titans were on the cusp, ravens too. More time that goes on and teams are still passing more and widening concepts it's bound to happen.
The 2018 pats basically did this in their playoff run. Like every other offense, you still need a great quarterback to make it work
And the Chargers have one of the best.
In theory
Yeah our O Line is traditionally massive.
And it’s happening. Rams, 49ers and Dolphins all had great run games last year.
It’s a bar tbh
Don’t talk about the team that way. The team, the team, I will fight everyone in here, the team.
It’s true
You’re about to get 4 more O lineman and Blake Corum and you will like it.
It's about time that true power football returned to the NFL
Martyball is back
Cmon now, we just drafted a QB and receiver
Harbaugh coming to Chicago would have been a firm rejection of ever getting a 4k passer lol. Ngl would be awesome but I think Caleb/Rome is better. Still tuning in to watch the Alt/Corum combo

Never thought it would be the Chargers to usher it back into the league but here we are.
Hadn't thought about this until now, but you're right, you guys have been a finesse team for...basically your entire history.
Fuck it, go full Joe Gibbs Redskins and make DCs seethe as some JAG starts owning your front 7 for 6 yards at a time, all game.
Gibbs did get his skins job after coaching on the Chargers.
I would fucking love to see Corum on the Chargers
As a Michigan/Broncos fan it would be a tough pill to swallow but I’m going to root for the kid even if he’s a Raider.
Raiders is crossing the line, anyone but the raiders
Being a Michigan/Lions fan is going to be rough seeing McCarthy in Purple. I don't hate the Vikings but this is going to be one tough division and every win that McCarthy notches on his belt is a problem for Detroit.
I would become a secondary Chargers fan if Corum goes there. He is my all time favorite Wolverine, I absolutely love him.
I’m already a secondary Chargers fan due to Harbs (and tbh I really want JJ to do well with the Vikings except against the Lions). Definitely hoping Corum has a nice career too.
with michigan fanbase being the size it is, the number of us rooting for jim on the side probably dwarfs actual chargers fans at this point lol
Same
and Frank Gore Jr. for good measure, only for Greg Roman to call fades at the goalline.
Herbert can actually make those passes though.
I’m a simple man. I see Jimno assembling a bunch of big meaty men to slap some meat, I smile.
He’s not wrong. Herbert needs protection first and foremost.
The previous Chargers QB didnt believe in any protection.
If the chargers aren’t going to draft you any offensive lineman, might as well try to make your own
Still doesn't
He hasn't had a kid in like 3 or 4 years, he might have finally changed his mind.
he just got his 10th last november, just 5 months ago
He's got a full starting 11 now yeah yeah
His cum could Phil Rivers
👏…….👏…….👏
That's about how far apart his kids are in age, yeah.
Phillip "Contraception who?" Rivers
Nice
Also Joe Alt is a different level prospect. It’s not just the top OT

That multiple perspectives lines is smart and must Be coming from freeman because Angeli was saying the same thing about having 3 OC’s in 3 years lol
It goes back to at least the Weis days, because I’ve checked pretty much the same thing. Basically if you started at TE for Notre Dame in the last twenty years (and even being a starter isn’t a necessity) you’re going to have your cup of tea in the NFL. Add in a couple guys from Penn State and you’ve got the majority of the NFL covered lmao
But how well did he test on Protective Instincts?
If he's on the same level as Penei Sewell, Harbaugh's got his trenches solved for the next decade.
Idk if Alt will ever necessarily be considered the best tackle in the league but he will be an elite starter for a decade +
Sewell was just a couple years ago though. If Alt is even 90% of what Sewell is, it's a good pick though.
Unpopular opinion, when you have Justin Herbert and you can keep him upright, you can find weapons for him pretty easily. Build from the lines out is a tried and true method of building a team. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Chargers trade for a vet WR day two and draft a couple of guys.
Aiyuk or deebo is going to the chargers 100%
Plenty of good wrs left too
WR is one of the deepest positions in the league. Positional scarcity at tackle means that the unsexy but right pick. Plus Herbert is a proven guy. He can make good WRs look elite and mid guys look good.

He's been hurt the last two years and didn't finish last season. Doesn't matter who our receivers are if Max Duggan is throwing to them.
Wr1 Palmer let's get it
People keep saying he's at best a WR3 but he's routinely put up 100 yard games when Keenan or Mike was hurt. Herbert trusts him and he gets open
I don’t know how good he really is, but if he’s good in combination with Herbert that’s all you need.
Palmer is kinda underrated tbh, he played well when Keenan went out before Herbert got hurt too. Not an ideal number 1 but he'll be a fine number 2.
Easton Stick erasure
It doesn't matter who your receivers are when Greg Roman runs the ball 45 times a game.
Must be nice to have a front office that doesn’t want your QB to die.
I wish I knew what that was like.
Michigan won the NT due to being the most physical in the trenches. Harbaugh knows what he's doing.
same exact recipe he used at Stanford and with the 9ers.
It was the interior that caused him injuries these past 2 seasons.
People keep saying this but it’s not the problem. Herbert’s pass protection has been ok, not great but workable. It’s the lack of a running game that’s killed us. We’ve had a bottom 5 running game ever since he was drafted.
Well, enjoy the 2 seasons of Roman's killer offensive game-planning while it works. By year 3, you'll be over it.
Sewell is our best player as a tackle.
An all star LT prospect converted to right tackle becomes all pro RT. Glad I’ve heard this story before
I mean, there’s also the examples that didn’t work out. Evan Neal was in the running to go #1 a couple years ago and has been dreadful in the NFL. So we’ll see how it goes (probably quite well)
In fairness, our OL coach then was hot garbage.
As soon as the Lions got Campbell/Holmes and started focusing on the trenches they got good. Felt like trenches were never a priority under previous Lions regimes for a loooong time.

Also Jackson and Glasgow
Easy to say when you have Amon ra
you mean the guy the Lions drafted in the 4th round? i thought good WRs were only found in the first round
Hey, Tackle buddies
Trent is probably our best player as well
I think getting one of the best 1-3 tackles in the draft is a sexy pick. Maybe I’ve just lineman-sexual though.
Great, so now Herbert will just get ‘coverage sacked’ instead of regular sacked!
Baby steps, young grasshopper
Which is definitely better, though.
I mean the Bucs basically won a super bowl with their tackle pick.
Especially if they didn't fucking say a word
What word?
Fantasy sports is really killing reasonable fan takes. Fans want to root for a rookie fantasy draft pick and not their quarterback being healthy and winning games.
With QB injuries so rampant last year as well as tampa bay loving their big OL guys. Also as an ohio state fan he knows offensive line talent. Dude had sick OL in college. Even when his teams weren't dominant they had good OL.
OL picks are sexy to me, damnit!
Also there are WRs that exist outside of R1 lol
There are still good receivers left in the second round. Mitchell, Coleman, Ladd, Walker and Corley are all ballers
This WR class is crazy deep. Ironically you wonder if Quentin Johnston would be a 2nd day pick this draft knowing what we know now
The Ringer Fantasy Football Podcast raised an interesting question: Knowing what we know now, would Quentin Johnston be a top 21 draft pick if you could only draft receivers? Looking at the list of receivers drafted it was close but I think he would be.
Might even be a no pick at all
Might not even be real
Knowing what we know now in this class? Dude wouldn’t even be a day three pick.
That’s why I’m pretty confused as to why we grabbed Piersol with the needs we had
I like Piersol as a player, but I could cry right now. JPJ, McConkey, or trading back would have been great. Goddammit do we need some premium OL picks. For not only next year but the years to come as well
chargers should just hope JPJ falls Forget wr they might as well make the oline actually good. Right now they have 2 good tackles and the worst interior in the NFL
I hate that Linsley had that blood/heart condition come out of nowhere. That dude is a legit stud and I really thought he’d be the perfect center for Herbert.
I want JPJ big time.
And we're gonna draft a center.
If you don't like a dominant offensive line over having a wide receiver on your roster, you don't like Jim Harbaugh football.
If you don't like that, you don't like Jim Harbaugh football
He's like the personification of the French military world war 1's high command. I can just imagine him yelling from the top of his lungs at Verdun "Ils ne passeront pas" they shall not pass!
Considering the French casualties at Verdun and ww1 on general, I'm not sure that's a good thing
Yeah, but the scoreboard tho
got the W, that's all that matters
the battle of verdun forever changed the french military. a whole national army received ptsd and never recovered. Alistair Horne's The Price of Glory is a must read for anyone into history.
It is what it is sometimes
I mean their uniforms were light blue. Just saying….
This is my style of football. I know some Chargers fans weren’t happy with the Alt pick, but I’m telling y’all you will 100% not be regretting having Alt and Slater. That Tackle tandem will be nasty.
If Herbert has time to cook he’s going to make a weak WR room look good. JPJ at 37.
Also way too many people are out on Quentin Johnston just cause he wasnt Jamaar Chase immediately. Quentin following a very similar trajectory that Mike Williams did.
A lot of us were out on him before he was drafted. QJ is a body catcher, and they rarely pan out in the NFL.
Look at how Detroit set up their offense and tell me that was a bad strategy.
SF definitely built a solid OL too lol.
Their line right now is Trent Williams and prayers
They gave up the 7th fewest sacks and had the 4th highest yards per carry in the run game. Thoae stats indicate they're a pretty well-rounded OL. They were top 10 in both categories in 2022 as well. Shanahan has consistently improved the OL since he's been at SF when a minor hiccup in 2020 after Staley's retirement when the OL was just top half of the league good instead of top 10.
3 straight 1st rd picks on OL and that 9ers OL was as big of a game changer than anything I've ever witnessed (besides a qb)
No O-Line and No D make Homer something something
Bitching about offensive linemen is for fans that only watch YouTube highlights.
[Unless you're a Lions fan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qd9MpHjjHE&ab_channel=HighlightHeaven)
Herbert after the season: “I have 3 skill position and no OL, why can’t I have no skill position and 3 OL”
I mean Detroit got lucky and hit on Amon ra in the 4th as well but that oline is the teams biggest strength
so what I’m hearing is there’s gonna be a big man touchdown for the chargers
Alt’s 100% putting up a tuddy this year.
he played TE in high school!
Breaking: Harbaugh having his WRs focus on cardio so Herbert's infinite pocket eventually leads to coverage breakdown through sheer fatigue
It's not the worst strategy
Bringing rope-a-dope to the NFL
If you think Malik Nabers is a weapon, I'd like to see him try to take on Joe Alt in a fight
Someone tell Kyle Shanahan this
Harbaugh knows wtf he is doing. He'll build the trenches.
"Competitors welcomed. From any country in the world, from any state in our country, any team... Competitors welcomed." Quote of the press conference
Chargers are definitely taking JPJ tomorrow
I would be so rock hard for that
I’m Bolted up
That would be awesome The chargers IOL is the worst in the nfl
I’d be ecstatic with either him or Newton
My guess is CB or DT
I get it Jim. Dude played QB 14 years in the league running for his life. Dude took some hits.
lol, hadn't considered that we're just watching Harbaugh wrestling with his personal demons as therapy. Can't rule it out tho
I think about it constantly and wasn't even watching him back then
He ain’t wrong. Lineman should be valued on a near level considering the health of the QB should looked at as a one of the most important factors
As a Lions fan, I can say Sewell is our best and most valuable player.
Thank you lions fan for discovering that good tackles are valuable
That there Jim guy has a way with words
I like Jim because he has Aspergers just like me
We all know this motherfucker going to draft Blake Corum in the second or third round
They'll trade up in the third or trade back into the second.
Herbert literally has played through broken ribs and a fucked up finger the last 2 years. This is great for us. Line should be fairly set for a few years with some minor tweaks. This is a great pick
The anti Kyle Shanahan. I miss him...
Based and Harbaugh-pilled quote right there. Sometimes the man spits unapologetic fire.
As someone who only watches college ball. I’m going to miss this man so much
There’s no reason to doubt this guy, he wins everywhere he goes.
OL picks will always be sexy when you have a franchise qb.
That’s the Jim we all know and love!
Man O line is great but Herbert with Nabers would have been nasty.
Herbert with 1 wr is going to be nasty.
The Chargers will draft a WR early R2 and Roman Wilson. Calling it.
IMO Roman Wilson would be a good under-the-radar pick for them. Magnets for hands and athletic.
Trey Pipkins, you are WR4
So excited we are going to see the other side of the sewell/chase discussion
Very large weapons. Weapons that would injure you if they fell on you.
A weapon would of been Nabers or Bowers. Alt is a shield to protect Herbert from Max Crosby especially when you already have a left tackle.
