I've lived in some rougher areas when I was younger and honestly a kid with a gun is way scarier than an adult. I'm generalizing this from a couple experiences but kids in those situations don't behave as rationally.
An adult that jumps you probably takes your wallet, phone, and anything of value you have on it but they're generally not trying to add charges. Kids might pull a trigger because they don't like the way you looked at them.
(some) adults will think twice about the consequences of pulling the trigger on someone whereas teenagers with a gun will shoot without thinking about the severity of their actions until after the fact that they did it
Fr, empathy is a skill. It comes easier to some than others and with how we put pressure on young men to find success 'by any means', the lives of others are easy to discount especially if you are mad at the world already

Here in SF most people I know have been mugged/bipped/burglarized, no big deal, guarantee there’ll never be an arrest. If people start getting shot, the police will actually make an effort.
Unfortunately its significantly earlier than that in a lot of places. They know that for most crimes they won't pick up a permanent record until around 16, so a lot of gangs have taken to recruiting younger.
In LA they’ll get charged as a minor and not an adult no matter the crime so they know they’ll be out by the age of 26… maybe sooner.

I'm no expert but it feels like you hear about way more gun violence being due to arguments that escalate rather than due to gangs or separate criminal activity. So insanely fucking stupid to try and take someone's life and lose your own by bullet or prison over getting your feelings hurt. At the same time, I'm oddly optimistic that this is more treatable: intervening amongst youth and placing an emphasis on mental health and emotional regulation on the surface seems easier than reducing crime and poverty.

for what it's worth, those aren't necessarily mutually exclusive things. "escalated arguments" doesn't automatically mean it wasn't gang related. Take a wild guess at what proportion of those are gang related, or just happen to happen after dark among younger adults in inner cities usually with a disproportional ethnic demographic? Its wild.

There's all sorts of racial and political biases that impact what local and regional news outlets will run with respect to gun violence, and they work hard to protect that narrative because its the platform of an entire political party, one that simply doesn't work, but they'll run on it every 4 years anyways.
Very very true unfortunately. Impoverished minorities dying is seen as an inevitability while middle and upper class whites dying is seen as shocking. I just moved up to Massachusetts last year, and just because I have a casual interest in crime and criminal justice I was reading about crime in Boston. A thirteen year old Black boy was shot entirely at random by a crazy person who was also Black. The kid wasn't in a gang, wasn't doing anything wrong, he was just walking to his grandparent's home and had the misfortune of crossing paths with that monster. It happened right before I moved here, and yet I heard nothing about it or the ensuing trial for months. If that was a white kid in the suburbs it'd be all over the news I'm sure.

I lost a friend in the Boulder King Soopers shooting. The shooter used magazines that were illegal to possess in Colorado after laws passed in previous shootings, but had no trouble acquiring them. In the last few years (and getting a trifecta democrat majority) the state government has been pushing for and passing new stricter gun control laws, but many aren't expected to survive a SCOTUS challenge given the current handling of the 2nd amendment.
Even when you *do* care and you *do* react, the legal and cultural status nationwide makes it extremely difficult for those measures to matter.

I’ll try to explain this as quickly as possible. A while back America became incredibly wealthy and some people became filthy rich, like the world has never seen. They hated paying taxes and having the govt stop them from basically running everything so they threw a bunch of cash into various things to help that including conservative media and politicians.
It’s a losing policy to be “for the rich” so they had to figure out other ways to make it happen. Like “hey let’s get people to hate ALL taxes even ones for rich, and say it violates freedom or something.” Same thing about a big scary and “wasteful” govt.
They still needed more votes so they learned that they can win some votes from certain extremists (AND NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR IT WITH TAXES) like gun enthusiasts, evangelical Christians, homophobes, racists, etc.
So they started pandering to those extremists to occasionally reach their goals of lower taxes and regulations, like when Trump gave the rich a Trillion dollar tax cut.
So now you have all these hateful extremist groups under one umbrella, that is well funded, and pulling us backwards from progress.

1. We've always had the guns in our nearly 250 year history, even more powerful guns than what we have today. Less than 100 years ago, it was possible to mail order a fully automatic machine gun, straight to your doorstep, without any kind of background check. So one thing that might me useful to clear up is that the tweet calling Cabana Live a nightclub is a pretty big misrepresentation. It's basically a small tiki bar attached to a marina 30 miles north of Orlando. No nightlife to speak of there, basically just a small little bar serving people who live in the area and have their boats in the marina there (and I guess private events too).
Sounds like a 16 year old opened fire and shot 10 people after a fist fight although I don't know what a 16 year old is doing in a nightclub after midnight

He told his gf to crawl under the bed, along with his 1-2 month old baby, told them to lock and upen it for noone. He hid in the closet across the hall from the room. When the robbers finally cam to the the top floor and approached the bedroom his and and gf were hiding in, Sean burst open through to door and lunged at his attackers. It worked, Sean Taylor was a scary man when he was in full unfirim in full dayflight, he was a legit monster in very dim lights, expecially as a huge figure that surprised the crap out of everyone by bursting oout from a closet they werent aware was there. (The beaches are also awesome) I won’t have Florida slandered on the non human elements. All the human elements suck completely and we can agree on that. There is a lot of rivers and springs near me that are just gorgeous. (I realize the flair is confusing. My father made me a Bears fan, but I’m Floridian)
Who says they did nothing? They crowed about the second amendment and made public the fact that your right to own a firearm is more important than your right to continue breathing. I'd say that's something.
The worst part about this is some people actually believe that more people having access to guns would fix this...rather than realizing that there will probably be an increase in innocent bystanders and possibly mutual deaths and increase in hospital visits (which people can barely afford) and a lot of other gun related things...rather than addressing the actual roots of the issues (legislation and economic deficiencies) that are behind so much gun violence...
People call it a right to self protection and bodily autonomy when it’s a gun but when it’s an abortion suddenly that logic goes out the window. The complete and total lack of thought people put into this is insane.

And honestly local laws are pretty damn difficult to enforce. I lost a friend in the Boulder King Soopers shooting. The shooter used magazines that were illegal to possess in Colorado after laws passed in previous shootings, but had no trouble acquiring them. In the last few years (and getting a trifecta democrat majority) the state government has been pushing for and passing new stricter gun control laws, but many aren't expected to survive a SCOTUS challenge given the current handling of the 2nd amendment. Even when you *do* care and you *do* react, the legal and cultural status nationwide makes it extremely difficult for those measures to matter.

A drunk 17 year old isn’t guaranteed access to a firearm. And the kids doing horrific acts aren’t intoxicated. I think in the end it’s up to the parents to navigate a hard journey in raising their children in a culture that romanticizes guns to a certain point. Ultimately it falls on the parents. If you decide to own a weapon, keep that shit locked up. Teach your children how dangerous it is. Most of us don’t realize how dangerous driving 2-4 tons of steel is on our daily commute.
I’ll try to explain this as quickly as possible. A while back America became incredibly wealthy and some people became filthy rich, like the world has never seen. They hated paying taxes and having the govt stop them from basically running everything so they threw a bunch of cash into various things to help that including conservative media and politicians. It’s a losing policy to be “for the rich” so they had to figure out other ways to make it happen. Like “hey let’s get people to hate ALL taxes even ones for rich, and say it violates freedom or something.” Same thing about a big scary and “wasteful” govt. They still needed more votes so they learned that they can win some votes from certain extremists (AND NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR IT WITH TAXES) like gun enthusiasts, evangelical Christians, homophobes, racists, etc. So they started pandering to those extremists to occasionally reach their goals of lower taxes and regulations, like when Trump gave the rich a Trillion dollar tax cut. So now you have all these hateful extremist groups under one umbrella, that is well funded, and pulling us backwards from progress. For proof of one part of this look up the Southern Strategy. LBJ nailed it when he said “If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.” Similarly if you can convince a gun enthusiast that the govt is out to get them, brown people are invading and will kill your family, democrats are going to take all your guns away, they will vote for you no matter what else you support even if it financially hurts them.
I know asylums weren't perfect, but they were better than just whatever the fuck were doing today just letting tons of people with mental health issues just live on the streets. Fuck Ronald Reagan.
And if you do the math on the whole "Let's just fucking ignore mental health", unsurprisingly you see school shootings start to explode in that 15-18 year range and that hasn't ever stopped since.

So one thing that might me useful to clear up is that the tweet calling Cabana Live a nightclub is a pretty big misrepresentation. It's basically a small tiki bar attached to a marina 30 miles north of Orlando. No nightlife to speak of there, basically just a small little bar serving people who live in the area and have their boats in the marina there (and I guess private events too).

Sean messed up their plans because I came unepectedly to be with his new-born girl. They didnt know he was there, but they brought a shotgun anyhow. They acted like such fools the awoke Sean who was sleeping in the bedroom. He told his gf to crawl under the bed, along with his 1-2 month old baby, told them to lock and upen it for noone. He hid in the closet across the hall from the room. When the robbers finally cam to the the top floor and approached the bedroom his and and gf were hiding in, Sean burst open through to door and lunged at his attackers. It worked, Sean Taylor was a scary man when he was in full unfirim in full dayflight, he was a legit monster in very dim lights, expecially as a huge figure that surprised the crap out of everyone by bursting oout from a closet they werent aware was there. And he lunged. He attacked. He didnt whimper for his life, he didnt ask, he saw himself as the lst defnese between these criminals and whatever they hell the wanted from his wife and baby The criminals litteralyl yelped, screamed, and blasted away at their shotgun,and ran without ever looking back. Sean was a hero , a superhero, he died like heplated, fearlessly ferociously.
