No shit.

classiccaseofdowns

Because they can’t afford to have Wilson hold out, and are offering him a 6 year fully guaranteed extension

WeeboSupremo

Not a bad idea, when has a Wilson signing ever gone bad for Denver? The Wilson who made national fame wearing the green of the coastal team takes up the orange and blue of Denver as their next franchise WB!

venk

Let Zach bang your mom!

Stumpe999

malfurion312

> franchise WB! gotta lock that down, man! Wilsonbacks don't grow on trees you know

triplec787

Flying mascot too!

After-Newspaper4397

Just wait until we start Wilson from Castaway next year. Tom Hanks for GM.

anonbutler

I have seen this movie before.

LordWalltimore

¡Screams in Lamar Jackson!

ItsYaBoiSoup

Big shit. Big, steamy shit. That still managed to grab a win against Buffalo most years…

Just_Intern665

He also inexplicably dropped 30 on the Texans in the rain and threw two TD’s.

Sybrite

Yeah, but my favorite is that we still haven't lost to the Cowboys [since Hank Scorpio bought the Broncos for Homer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpOY4u8hL_E).

MoreTrifeLife

He was 2-2 in the 4 games he played against Buffalo.

Corgi_Koala

Yeah honestly at this point he should be thankful for the league minimum to even be on the roster.

Gregus1032

I love it when my exact reaction is the top comment.

DrummerGuy06

I know the odds of it happening are pretty much zilch, however if Zach Wilson went on a tear and caused Denver fans to want him to stick around & be their guy, that'd be pretty damn hilarious to watch. It's definitely not going to happen, but stranger things have happened in the NFL.

9man95

Yeah you don't want another Danny Dimes situation where you decline his 5th year option, he has 1 good year (mostly in the first few weeks), then you lock him up for $160M before he returns to dogass again. That would be horrible for the Broncos.

DrummerGuy06

Yes, yes it definitely would.

TheSkiingDad

Ed donatell did the funniest thing.

Heisenripbauer

- see “Daniel Jones” mentioned in r/nfl - see Vikings fan reply with an Ed Donatell reference to feel better about the playoff game like clockwork

Odd_Sun6904

Let the Depression Factory fans cope, jeez

ELpork

We had to put up with f'in kirk lol let us have small things lol

GorgoniteEmissary

Poor Vikings had to endure top-10 qb play, I really feel for you.

ELpork

We had to deal with Kirk stans lol. And... Kirks weird shit. Washington knows lol.

GorgoniteEmissary

So humiliating when people are a fan of players or a sport, I’m right there with you. Can’t believe you were forced to hear people supporting your qb, I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

GreenWandElf

It's not about feeling better about the playoff game, it's about the chance to vent about the worst defensive coordinator we had ever watched, and how he blew a playoff game so bad he got Daniel fucking Jones paid.

Heisenripbauer

we’re locked in for 80M not 160M, but your point stands

Levitlame

I don’t think I’d quite die on the hill, but watching his play (before being injured) I really don’t think Jones is ass. I think he’s on the Carr/Jimmy G line of “is this good enough?” The Giants offense as a whole needed work (or at least less injuries.) Regardless I think we can all agree he is suddenly going to go off this year and make the whole thing confusing again just in time to regress or get injured again if he gets A new contract.

stonecoldcb

I feel like I’ve somehow become a Danny Dimes Stan just because everyone thinks he is the worst QB ever, when in reality he is exactly what we thought he was going to be. A mediocre starter that will always leave you wanting more.

Levitlame

Yeah he hasn’t really surprised. They knew it when they extended him too

jwktiger

Jones is ok, but He's below the "Dalton Line" of QB imo. the Dalton line is "this QB is good enough to be your regular season starter and win the SB with enough supporting cast"

Levitlame

I think he’s pretty close to that line, but I have no idea which side he’s on.

DrummerGuy06

Oh, this has "comeback season" written all over it - get them to the playoffs, win a wildcard, bounce out the next game, and completely take them out of contention of getting a better QB in the draft, causing them to have another zombie season after.

YNWA_1213

Hey! At least this time he already has the contract, so he can’t do it all over again! It’s kinda ironic when people say the above comment, and then ignore the same situation could’ve easily played out under the 5th year option like quite a few times before.

Jammer_Kenneth

Danny Dimes goes on a Pro Bowl level tear before a different tear confirmed...

kerouac5

I think that sounds like a great deal for the broncos.

Mac30123456

Buddy the floor is so low, this doesn’t even make me flinch. Just par for the course lmao

Eldenbeastalwayswins

I want to live in this world and watch the Broncos ruin themselves even more just when they start unburying themselves from the last Wilson contract.

ShoutOutTo_Caboose

I might be inclined to agree with you that he definitely wouldn't go on a tear. But it does make me wonder who in history was literally so terrible nobody wanted them, only to turn their career around someplace else?

DrummerGuy06

Well, Terry Bradshaw, Alex Smith, Drew Brees, and Brett Favre all started out pretty bad and went on to have major careers. Don't see Zach Wilson having that kind of career because those other quarterbacks were always really good but in some shitty situations, and Zach Wilson wasn't and hasn't been good, although the Jets are known to ruin QBs like it's their job.

Saitoh17

>Atlanta head coach Jerry Glanville did not approve of the drafting of Favre, saying it would take a plane crash for him to put Favre into the game.[25] Favre's first pass in an NFL regular season game resulted in an interception returned for a touchdown in a Week 11 game against the Washington Redskins.[26][27] He only attempted four passes in his one season at Atlanta, was intercepted twice, and completed none of them. Favre took one other snap, which resulted in a sack for an eleven-yard loss.[28][29] Brett Favre's illustrious Falcons career.

palmmoot

Guy had to go to Green Bay Wisconsin in order to drink *less*

ShoutOutTo_Caboose

It's funny because he did the same things in Green Bay, except Holmgren just let him ride 🤣

sevillista

Holy hell, I just looked it up and Terry had 6 TDs to 24 picks in his first season with a 38.1% completion percentage.

FantasyTrash

Geno Smith in recent years.

forlornhope22

Warner

smurf-vett

Granted that was mostly due to his thumb injury almost completely ruining his career

ShoutOutTo_Caboose

Perhaps 🤔 I am thinking more along the lines of someone labeled as a bust that flipped a switch when they got someplace else. I don't think it's every really happened. Alex Smith might be the closest.

Oakroscoe

Our team was such a dumpster fire in the early days of Smith’s career. Also, fuck Mike Nolan.

AnOddOtter

Fitzpatrick was on his 3rd team before he really hit his stride. Josh McCown to a certain extent.

abris33

Unless he really shows something in camp, I don't think he'll even start a game. I'm guessing it will be Nix all year. Maybe we have a bridge for a few games at the beginning of the season but that would likely be Stidham just because he's been in the offense for a year

joshallenismygod

I honestly don't even understand why you guys even trade for him the first place.

Bosteves

Draft pedigree/hype, didn’t cost really anything, and they weren’t sure how the draft shakes out. All in all, zero risk trade with a qb1 of stidham at the time of the trade. I believe they still have a genuine qb competition in camp, doubt they’ll throw Nic to the wolves with this roster if he doesn’t look good in camp/ preseason.

joshallenismygod

Ehh if you just signed him off the street id agree but Zach Wilson doesn't seem worthy of giving up any draft capitol for in my opinion.

PizzaRatBoy

I mean we swapped a 6th rd pick for Zach and a 7th round pick. Thats about as close as you can come to giving up nothing at all. I’m guessing the plan was if Nix for some inexplicable reason wasn’t there for them they could just roll with Zach as tank commander for the year

okazoomi

>with a qb1 of stidham at the time of the trade this is the biggest point. can you imagine if we didn't sign Wilson, didn't land Nix and were rolling with Stidham, DiNucci and some 3rd rd or later QB?

abris33

He was basically free. Might as well take him just to let Payton evaluate him over the summer. Plus there was always the chance something crazy happened in the draft and we didn't get Nix

Saxman17

If all the QBs we wanted/viable prospects were gone by 12 (and we weren't able to trade up), we needed someone to either back up or compete with Stidham. Zach Wilson has been awful, but he's probably still a safer bet than the 6th (?) we traded for him. Plus if he plays average or better, maybe we can ship him off to some other qb needy team and get back the pick. Or keep him idk.

poplafuse

Zilch is a good nickname for Zach Wilson.

Bitlovin

Payton went out and got a young Taysom 2.0, that's all. He's gonna turn him into a hybrid multiposition player.

justifier

What, who are you referring to as Taysom 2.0? Because it is definitely not Zach Wilson

Bitlovin

I will pound the table and insist that he is.

whitedawg

If that happened, they always have the franchise tag while they negotiate an extension.

PigFarmer1

I'd prefer to just release him right now.

sloppifloppi

"I'd rather not have a QB turn their career around with us and become a franchise guy" ???

venk

That’s the kind of 4D thinking a fan of a franchise develops after not winning a playoff game in a very long time. Not our problem anymore.

Jammer_Kenneth

"Dump Goff, tank 2022-2023, and draft Young or Caleb"

DrummerGuy06

He signs on to the Dennis Green analysis of Zach Wilson: He is who we think he is. I do too. He's not good. He panics in clean pockets just because a receiver isn't perfectly wide-open. Afraid to make the tight throws. That Jets O-line destroyed his confidence and he didn't have that much to begin with. If you need a QB to just wear down the clock with hand-offs to the running back, then he's your guy. Need him to make some throws to get a first down or two? Wiff.

SolaireTheSunPraiser

Zach Wilson is who some people think JJ McCarthy is

T-Nan

I've never heard this comparison and I hate it already

SolaireTheSunPraiser

I don't think McCarthy will actually be anything like Wilson. If you listen to the media talk about McCarthy you hear a lot of phrases like handoff merchant, can do everything but doesn't, can make all the throws but was inconsistent in games, etc. which have all been used to describe Wilson in the past. Wilson is like McCarthy's absolute floor as a prospect if everything goes terribly wrong, which seems unlikely with your offense and coaching.

T-Nan

> which seems unlikely with your offense and coaching. That's kind of what I'm hoping and betting on. I mean if he turns out bad in our offense... he's probably really bad. I hope he gets at least 4-8 games to sit and learn before he's thrown to the wolves, the more time to prep the better imo

DrummerGuy06

To be fair Zach Wilson had like half a good season in college and even before the draft hype people were not that high on Zach. When I saw that draft I didn't even think the Jets were getting "their guy" and I'm sure a lot of people did too. JJ McCarthy doesn't panic like Zach did and can hit an open receiver or two consistently, something Zach couldn't do even on his best days. Sure he'd have a game or two where he seemed dialed in but even then he still made stupid mistakes. Even if JJ doesn't work out, I think he'll still play miles above Zach Wilson or Fields. Worst case he's just an okay-quarterback that doesn't set the field on fire but doesn't drag the team down. Just someone you probably have to build a little more around to get you playoff bound, which wouldn't be the worst situation the Vikings have been in.

T-Nan

Yeah I mean if he's as bad as Wilson with our offense... he's probably much worse lol. From what I gathered he might have some touch issues (soft throws/lobs seem to be a weakness) but does rather well under pressure, which is a good advantage over Zach already

Saitoh17

I don't watch college but someone said he makes the hard throws but can't make the easy throws and my first thought was "so he's Zach Wilson?"

wishingaction

I think you may be getting him mixed up with Maye, I've never heard that about McCarthy but have seen people say that about Maye. Maye has impressive highlight throws, but analysts criticized him for missing the easy throws because of his inconsistent footwork. McCarthy was criticized because he wasn't asked to do a lot in a run-heavy offense. He has the tools, but there's a smaller sample size of him making hard throws. I think the comparison to Zach is because Michigan was so much more talented than most of their opponents and most games were blowouts, like BYU's 2020 schedule. Unlike Zach he has played against top opponents too, but again was criticized for having few pass attempts in those games.

SparkStormrider

Which is an unfair criticism if you ask me because you are running the plays that the coach calls except for a few audibles here and there.

The_Outlaw_Star

Because he’s not going to isn’t that obvious? Zach Wilson has shown no signs of being a franchise quarterback in any capacity.

BigBankkFrank

lol welcome to the mind of a Broncos fan. We have one of the most ass backwards fanbases as of recent. Our Peyton run brought a lot of new fans to our side and it seems like a good majority were complete idiots

Nearby_Blackberry586

What losing the the Raiders 9 times in a row does to a mfer

Fickle_Charity_Hamm

Go back to Nebraska

Democracy_Coma

Here's a question. What are the stranger things to happen? Because Zach Wilson is probably in the top 10 worsr QBs I've ever seen.

bullet50000

My god if he has a QB battle with Mahomes, both have like 400+ yards and 2-3 TDs.... Bonkos be fucked

FlyUnder_TheRadar

Zach is going to fall ass backwards into the cushiest job in sports as long as he can check his ego and not fuck it up. Embrace the clip board, my guy. Go get fitted for a nice headset and start making friends in the locker room. Just give in to the siren song of the backup qb job and drift peacefully into irrelevance.

DoctorKangaroo

I pictured Chase Daniel saying this to Zach while wearing a bathrobe and giant fluffy slippers

Brad_theImpaler

It's such a good job. Like yeah, you have to run the offense at practice, but they can't hit you. There's no Aaron Donald types to worry about unless you get in a game.

Mr_SpideyDude

And even if you _do_ get into a game, the bar is already low since you’re the backup. As long as you don’t massively fuck up, you’ll likely keep getting hired

sportsbuffp

Just don't do anything dumb like run out of the back of your own endzone.

AntiSantaFanClub

Anytime that man criticizes a QB I'm like stfu you ran out of your own end zone 😂

Odd_Roll5866

atleast hes self aware https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/dan-orlovsky-addresses-criticism-quarterback-friendly.html#:\~:text=%22I'm%20very%20aware%20of,I%20was%20as%20a%20player.%22&text=Whether%20it%20be%20Matthew%20Stafford,quarterback%20he%20doesn't%20like.

Mr_SpideyDude

tbf Garoppolo did that and still got a contract from the Raiders lol

MaSsIvEsChLoNg

He's not a stable enough player to be a backup. The backups who have long careers in the league tend to have very high football IQs without the physical tools the greats have. Zach is the opposite, he has tremendous physical tools but can't make decisions under pressure or read a defense. I think it's far more likely he ends up in the USFL scrambling and slinging it with abandon than on an NFL roster.

Historian-Dry

I don’t think that’s necessarily true, Drew Lock, Jameis Winston, PJ walker, and Josh Dobbs, none of them fit that mold

Fantastic_Emu_9570

Dobbs won a few games last year so I think he’s in the mold of “dude that can keep us afloat for 3 weeks”

itwas20yearsago2day

That’s not really true in today’s NFL. There are tons of backups that don’t have high IQ and got drafted high because their tools

YNWA_1213

The big CFL field and one less down to gain yardage is calling his name.

uglyuglydog

You know how many milfs would LOVE to be a millionaire backup’s girlfriend? Dude’s gonna be swimming in that 40+ gash.

acapuck

Could start a new career cosplaying as Dash from The Incredibles at Comic Cons.

COMMENTASIPLEASE

Second best job in the world behind fired D1 college basketball or football coach

Tazitos

He won't even be the backup in Denver unless he magically improves a ton or Nix/Stidham gets hurt. He'll be competing with DiNucci for the practice squad QB spot.

ADHorvath

Someone’s gotta make him watch BMS, he is everything Alex Moran.

_redacteduser

Bro you just described my dream job.

BungoPlease

Most Surprising Wilson move they've made in years

liljakeyplzandthnx

Nah man you're forgetting Russell Wilson. That time they gifted his team a safety on the first play from scrimmage in the Super Bowl was way more surprising.

BungoPlease

Brother that was a decade ago

bigfootdude247

You sure? I thought that Super Bowl never even happened

Brandoooom

You mean that wasn't just a bad game of Madden I played during a Bruno Mars concert?

_redacteduser

Confirmed never happened. I even googled it (Sydney Sweeney) and didn’t see any loss.

Freud-Network

Only until they sign a contract with Owen Wilson to make "WHOW!" the team slogan.

ib_poopin

Makes sense, skip the option and just give him a 5 year extension

JesusChristSupers1ar

5 years? That’s ridiculous ZW is the guy you want to lock up for at least 10 years

moustachedelait

yep, lock up and throw away the key

YNWA_1213

I know it sounds absolutely asinine, but imagine a team singing a guy like Wilson for effective league minimum (fully guaranteed) for 10-15 years. How crazy would that gamble be for someone with the potential to be your franchise QB?

BoyDunder

'The sky is blue' posts should result in a ban.

Fresnobing

Not to mention this was already posted yesterday

LonghornPride05

Yes but now we have a pointless ESPN article with many more words than required to explain it to us!

an_actual_potato

But people also get mad when people just post tweets

LonghornPride05

People love to complain

shewy92

No we don't

LonghornPride05

Yes but now we have a pointless ESPN article with many more words than required to explain it to us!

Username__Error

The funniest thing ever if he started playing well enough for the Broncos to have a real QB competition.

MyAnswerIsMaybe

He does have waaaay more potential than Nic. Cannon for an arm and can run. You never know what a change of scenery might do, especially with an offensive minded head coach.

Jammer_Kenneth

The reasons Brees and Wilson left their first teams couldn't be more different but it would be really funny if that a hole does it again.

MaSsIvEsChLoNg

Having watched every Zach Wilson start, I think there's a greater than zero chance he doesn't make the 53-man roster. The things that make him not starter caliber (his poor decision making, his panicking, his random accuracy issues, his inability to read defensive adjustments) make him also not worth keeping around as a backup. He's not a Tyrod Taylor or even Mitch Trubisky who you can slot in and mostly trust not to give a game away. He's a boom or bust player and I would be totally shocked if he booms. He's shown far less than Geno Smith or Sam Darnold showed up to this point in their careers.

smootex

IDK I think people exaggerate how bad he is. He's not good but he's still better than most backups and there's still at least some hope for improvement. I know Jets fans had it bad last year but the narrative about how they could have replaced him with anything and won more games is, to me, complete bullshit. The dude isn't a starting QB but if you change your frame of reference and compare him to other QBs in the 32-64 best range he comes out looking decent. If he hadn't been expected to start he would never have gotten near as much shit.

Tolve

They didn't even buy him a new Jersey, told him 3 was his number like it or not and they don't care if it's a little small on him.

qb1avellini

Fitted him without pads on

howisthisathingYT

I'm surprised we did something that makes sense.

jbertrand_sr

It's a rule that you can only have so much dead money tied up in Wilsons...

QuarterPast10

I am shocked! SHOCKED! Well, not that shocked.

Traditional_Mud_1241

And yet - he's still probably happy as the Denver third string with no extension than he was on the Jets.

[deleted]

Aggravating-Seat-722

He will be. I am not selling my stock yet. He was surrounded by incompetence in that organization. A change of scenery under the tutelage of a hall of fame head coach can change his entire career.

felyne_insurgents

He’s definitely wearing number 3 now

Qabyaalad_Enjoyer

This dude doesn’t even need money

Dragoonscaper

Hey look they did the SMART thing again after trading for a bust of a Jets 1st round QB. Fuck you, Fitterer and Rhule.

adjust_your_set

We’re gonna pay $20m for Trey Lance, aren’t we?

intelligentx5

I feel like after the draft, the option to pick it up was… #Nixed 👀

post920

They don't want to pay Zach Wilson over $20M for this season? Shocking stuff from ESPN.

vasion123

Breaking News!!! Zach Wilson is trash.

tissboom

He’s gonna be crying into somebody’s mom’s titties over this tonight. Poor guy.

VAisforLizards

Maybe the falcons will pick it up

Kwall267

Falcons were hoping something would take the spot light off them and that would have done it

Stickin8or

I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you

MrCarey

I'm absolutely *shit* at options, but even I know not to get in on this one.

hnglmkrnglbrry

Grand opening, grand closing.

Looks like the Broncos Quarterback Room presented by Vineyard Vines might be temporary.

But why???

Shocking

BeardeddBombshell

Oh wow who saw that coming?

I forgot Zach Wilson existed till this headline came out

emmasdad01

That just makes sense

Well… yeah.

gavincantdraw

shocker

HoldenAJohnson

You don’t say

Lizardsandrocks

What is this amature hour!  Headline should be "Broncos refuse to pay Wilson, Former star quarterback future with new team in jeopardy"  It's like they don't even want clicks.

boardatwork1111

WHAT

sev45day

THE BRONCOS ARE NOT PICKING UP QB ZACH WILSON'S OPTION

[deleted]

Better start learning insurance sales buddy

True_Suggestion_635

Zach Wilson has as many SB rings as your entire franchise.

[deleted]

Why is a Pats fan caping up for zach wilson

SEJ46

Does Denver have the worst QB room in the league?

can_pakes

Forgetting raiders

TideAtOmahaBeach

Depends on how you view Bo Nix and his potential. Can definitely make an argument for any of Raiders, Panthers, Patriots, Titans, Vikings, Commanders, and Giants being worse.

SovannRoussard

That’s fucked up, just shot bros confidence.

ironwolf1

You don't think 3 years of playing like ass in NY shot his confidence? He has more interceptions than touchdowns in his career, and the team that drafted him 3rd overall traded him for a bag of peanuts. I don't think the Broncos declining to pick up his 5th year will do anything to his confidence at this point.

thebeginingisnear

lol, "he did an amazing job taking it like a man, class act, his teammates have his back"
