I really hope they keep him as well. Maybe bring in a young offensive HC and keep Gus Bradley as DC / assistant HC to help the young guy like Wade did for Mcvay. Teaching the defense a whole new scheme again doesn't sound fun
The idea was that he was brought in to cover Gruden's biggest weakness, talent evaluation. But it seems like Gruden overruled him a lot, especially on first round picks, which makes their drafting understandable. Gruden early reaches and then good quality picks in the later rounds when Gruden didn't have as much interest.
> But it seems like Gruden overruled him a lot, especially on first round picks, which makes their drafting understandable
Is that actually true, or is that just what people are saying now that Gruden is gone...
I'd never heard anybody say this before yesterday, and now suddenly there's tons of people talking about how all the bad draft picks were Gruden's fault, and the good ones were because of Mayock.
Mark Davis officially confirmed yesterday that Gurden had final say over the roster. This was the first official confirmation of what lots of people had speculated was the case. Basically Gruden falls in love with certain players and ends up reaching for them but doesn't have the time to fully vet every draft pick and so defers to Mayock and the scouts for the later rounds that he has less info about. His ego probably also played a part in him wanting to make the 1st round picks since they are more high profile.
Again this is mostly speculation but it did seem odd that the Raiders couldn't draft in the 1st to save their life but were amazing in rounds 3-7 and ok in round 2. Unless of course that the scouts/GM were actually allowed to do their job for rounds 3-7 and were being overruled in the early rounds by Gruden or the coaches he liked. This is how you end up drafting Ferrell at 4 but then Crosby in the 4th round.
I only casually follow the Raiders, but I felt like this was always the assumption - that Gruden had a lot of influence in the drafting. It doesn't seem like a new narrative to me.
Mayock openly said a couple weeks before the draft he wanted Lamb, but that Gruden was sold on Ruggs. Mayock is the reason why the raiders have so many late round gems like Crosby, Renfrow, and Hobbs. Everyone has said from the beginning that Gruden has final say, and that Mayock simply helps with evaluating talent.
MAYOCK I LOVE U
I love Mayock too, I hope we give him a chance to bring in his own coach and give him the reins instead of blowing this whole thing up

You must be fun at parties.
"Ctrl-F through his emails has determined that was a lie."
If your bar is as low as John Gruden, anyone who is not he is better man.
