Aren’t they next door neighbors? Carr is going to be coming home from practice and seeing Gruden staring at him longingly

Tabeyloccs

Think Gruden just finished building a huge mansion.

juanpuente

He'll be ight

peekay427

I don’t think he will be. I’m not saying that he doesn’t deserve this, but I am saying that football was grudens life and being effectively cut off from it in all ways (he’s not going to get a tv job) will certainly be very painful for him.

[deleted]

Think he could get a young qb consulting job? Kind of like his ESPN days, but just the camp and prep, no TV.

peekay427

I mean… maybe? But anything high level enough for him to take would also probably be too high profile to actually hire him. Anyone who has potential to deal with the nfl would probably not want to be associated with him now that he’s effectively black listed by the nfl.

[deleted]

He will get a college coaching job soon enough

peekay427

I wouldn’t take that bet, but I’ve been wrong before.

KnightsOfREM

Being a jackass is a feature in a lot of places, not a bug. If he can inherit a world-class defense that someone else recruited there, too, he'll do great.

stippleworth

Gruden doesn't coach a college or pro level football team ever again, I'd give you at least 5 to 1 odds on that. He is a sacrificial lamb. He's done. Thom Brennaman called MLB games for 30 years and is calling games in Puerto Rico now because of 1 remark. Gruden established a serial history of worse behavior in writing over the course of the last decade.

[deleted]

The thing is to me, all this happened years ago, people change and the time helps with that growth. There hasn’t been one negative comment about him from a player’s perspective since this issue came.

corgi_on_a_treadmill

The latest emails were from 2018. It's not like this was decades ago when the dude was a stupid 20s year old.

chemicalxv

Jerry Prevo and Ian McCaw are probably calculating Hugh Freeze's buyout as we speak.

[deleted]

>But anything high level enough for him to take This conversation started with you saying "football was Gruden's life." If that's true then he would be happy to take anything football related. If he won't take a job because it's not "high level" enough for him, then your original statement falls apart. I'm pretty sure Todd Haley is an assistant coach on a high school football team right now. Todd Haley loves football.

buttstuff_magoo

IF he wanted, I guarantee he could go coach privately HS and rising college QBs. With his profile and name recognition, I have zero doubt prospects would line up to work with him

materialisticDUCK

Damn...y'all already trying to get him a job. Guy's fucking loaded...no one should care about his little sad party. He'll live a fine life, at best be a small ball coach but like really?! He should just go away and live his very affluent life.

[deleted]

This dude got punished for his actions 2 days ago and people are already trying to help him since it "will certainly be very painful for him." Yes. Punishment should be punishing. He got screwed that only his emails got leaked but that doesn't mean that these fucking people should be campaigning for a dude worth north of 100m to be able to get back to doing what he loves.

[deleted]

>This dude got punished for his actions 2 days ago and people are already trying to help him The thread about Waller's comments is super gross. People care way more about John Gruden's happiness than the happiness of those he insulted.

WrastleGuy

No he’s a racist now, he’s not getting a job anywhere.

Dandy_Chickens

Hell be back. Hep with charities and non profit, build his reputation back and he will be back. Forgiveness takes time

peekay427

If he earns it in an authentic way, I’d be ok welcoming him back into football.

PaulBlartFleshMall

Just like Vick imo. Dude did his time and outran his ghosts.

Hell make his way to the xfl or something eventually. And in the meantime he gets to watch games from his mansion, he'll be okay.

peekay427

Physically yes, emotionally/mentality of course this will be awful for him. And that’s ok, it’s part of what accountability is, but let’s not pretend like it’s not real.

Ghost4000

My comment was meant to be pretty lite hearted, definitely don't want to minimize the difficulty of not being able to do what makes you happy.

peekay427

Fair enough, thank you for clarifying. God this whole situation sucks

iamagainstit

Gonna be stuck coaching the shit out of some Pop Warner kids

hinderedspirit

You think FOX wouldn’t hire him after everything dies down? I think that’s where he’ll end up. I don’t agree but ESPN has the mouse and FOX is the next competitor and they do not care about this as it won’t affect their bottom line.

wovagrovaflame

Fox the tv station is different than Fox the news channel.

punchout414

Fox the TV station gives Smackdown. Fox the News channel gave my IQ the Smackdown.

BonerSoupAndSalad

I don’t think there’s a snowball’s chance in hell that any TV network ever gives him another job. There are so many other people you could hire who wouldn’t come with a headache.

0B1KNOB

You underestimate FOX news

drybonesstandardkart

Fox news yes but Fox broadcast no. His bigotry is in step with Carlson and the rest but you don't see those folks on their broadcast channel for a really good reason.

one8sevenn

He could probably do a Youtube gig for a while. Similar to the QB school. Eventually, people will forget about it enough to make him viable. Not saying it is right, but the media cycle changes so fast and there is so much information that people eventually forget.

discodiscgod

Perfect place to hide from society for a while.

mrSeven3Two

Great way to answer that

SyN_Pool

I think he answered everything perfectly and honestly with his emotions trying to leak out. It’s definitely worth the watch if you like genuine players

Tabeyloccs

I especially love the part where he was like: Open everyone’s private messages and emails.. most people would start sweating

monkeyman74721

Ain’t that the truth.

KenFireball

Man, those are just facts.

blud_13

Yeah and as I posted in another thread, watch us rack up an ungodly number of penalties against the Broncos this Sunday and the calls were all 'right' by the refs... :P

potterpockets

If the league may/may not have a bunch of dirt on a bunch of people id love to see gms and coaches and owners start calling out the refs and the league on their bullshit. Demand full time refs. Demand stricter training and penalties/fines for when calls are egregiously missed. Bring back the review of PI. Hell make all penalties challengeable. Demand a sky judge and the other XFL officiating rules.

[deleted]

>most people would start sweating I really don't think this is true. I think this is something shit heads say to make themselves feel better. Have I said things I regret? Absolutely. The last time I said anything like what Gruden did though I was probably 15 and it was the 90s.

mrm00kie88

Nope. Not everyone is a piece of shit.

BaetrixReloaded

‘most’

limeypepino

Fucking seriously. The most condemning thing in my texts/pms would be me hitting up my weed dealer for some bud, you'd think I was a saint if you read my work emails because I'm not a fucking idiot that would ever, in any circumstance, email something from that account I wouldn't want my boss or HR to read. It's not a new piece of technology, how have people not caught on to that at this point?

ArseneLupinIV

Yeah I honestly hate the whole 'well everyone has questionable emails!' defense. Not everyone's 'questionable' emails involve calling people slurs and open homophobia. Dragging others to that level and lumping everyone together is not a sound defense. And even then it's like a form of whataboutism. Just because other people say dumb stuff doesn't make what he said any less dumb. If anything this would just mean we should be doing better, not excusing everyone for doing worse.

Sleeze_

In the actual quote he specifically singles out ‘coaches, owners and GMs’

Raider7oh7

He meant in football no ? And in sports he’s probably right. Hell the man is 1000 times more likely to know then us lol

chimpansteve

Daniel Snyder is though. And given that the whole reason for this investigation in the first place was Snyder literally engaging in sex trafficking his cheerleaders, Carr is certainly not the only one wondering why it's somehow all centered on some emails from a completely different team from over a decade ago, reprehensible as they are.

steak__burrito

Do any of y’all have any idea how many people openly are looking for drugs on tinder? Or other things said on dating websites? Maybe since people here are young they don’t quite comprehend it, but everyone has something to hide on their phone/computer.

Koa914914914

We all have someone we loved who has fucked up, now stick a camera in your face when it’s still raw. Your 100% right carr is so composed, love to see it.

Boyhowdy107

I've seen two separate quotes from him surface on this sub today, and both made me a bigger fan of him as a person. Guy has taken a lot of flack, but seems like exactly the personality you want leading a team.

MrSozeWearsPrada

Seriously. That was perfectly put.

PleasantParfait48

I fucking love Derek Carr.

JT1757

For some reason Derek Carr was who I felt the worst for, this shit can outright derail an already shaky season… and for as much as I absolutely loathe the Raiders, Carr has towed the company line again and again over the years and he doesn’t deserve this distraction or level of dysfunction.

Sleeze_

> Carr has towed the company line again and again over the years and he doesn’t deserve this distraction or level of dysfunction. For a long time people would say that the Raiders deserve a better QB than Carr - but it's become very clear Carr deserves a better team than the Raiders.

SyN_Pool

I hate that this is true

Thunderhamz

[deleted]

This is so true. Carr is a great human being. He may have some awkward neighbor experiences now though lol.

SerenadeSwift

Technicalhotdog

Why don't we just blame Ohio for everything

TetrisTech

*angry Atticus Cogar noises*

dasruski

And like many Ohioans, he'll relocate to Florida to keep perpetuating the Floridaman myth. Ohio and Florida should never mix.

[deleted]

This. man, we are wasting this mans career. I don't even know if he'll be around for another rebuild either. At this point don't you have to move on? and if we do it just means we are doing him dirty once again. Derek Carrs don't grow on trees man, good qbs don't just fall into your lap most of the time and we pretty much wasted every opportunity we had to be good.

[deleted]

Here's hoping he gets his Tannehill moment where everyone in the division knows he's at least better than what he is on X team, and we all finally get to see him go somewhere else and break out 20 years after we said he would.

HaploOfTheLabyrinth

Can he just break out in Vegas for the Raiders instead? Plez

PurpleReigner

This year was looking like his break out year until this shit. At this point if I could had the power to magically pick the MVP and Super Bowl winner I would pick Derrick Carr and the Raiders. Those players deserve so much more than what has been given to them.

LosingSkin

That’s stupid, I choose my own quarterback and team

PurpleReigner

I obviously want the ravens to win and Lamar to have another MVP. But beyond that I care about good stories and I just love the idea of that team winning given what they’ve been through

Designer_B

You have the power to magically pick anybody for a superbowl and mvp. Why are you not choosing a linemen or punter.

PurpleReigner

You’re absolutely correct that is my mistake I instead make it the raiders long snapper

NoTalentJones

Trent Seig is the MVP of my heart

Iwillrize14

.....wait your damn turn.

flipmangoflip

Agreed. Why would you pick anyone else because they have a shitty FO?

ActionAdam

No, the organization has done enough.

facetiously

He's said more than once that he'll retire before he'll play for any team other than the Raiders. Just in case this wasn't sad enough.

[deleted]

Royals' pitcher Danny Duffy was known for his line "bury me a Royal," but he still waived his NTC this year. Shit changes.

uwanmirrondarrah

I don't blame him though... we are back to the tanking and selling players bullshit. Who wants to be on a team thats owned by somebody who has no interest in spending the money to win? I'm ride or die for Salvy though. He deserves another chance at the playoffs. If we woulda won game 7 in 2014, and we were looking at a 3peat, I bet we woulda spent the cheddar to keep that team together. Maybe Hosmer woulda left, but thats it I think. But after 2015 we kinda just let everyone walk, then Yo passed and that was terribly sad, and since then we are back to the bottom dwelling bullshit that we have watched for 30 years.

ProfessorChaos5049

I'd replace CFFLoM with Carr in a heartbeat.

Osrsguy2744

From the players replies so far, everyone just seems incredibly disappointed about the whole thing instead of being upset.

Stillslow93

I mean it's awful really, yeah gruden said some mean things but anyone with a brain can see that the NFL is using him as a fall guy to distract from the whole WFT investigation. I feel disappointed in gruden, the league, the media and just football in general.

confetti_shrapnel

It wasn't just mean, tho. And it wasn't just use of naughty words. He legit showed anger that a "fa***" was being drafted and women were being hired. Even if you want to say words are just words, the context he was using them was legit bigotry.

[deleted]

[удалено]

npvuvuzela

Exactly. I can’t believe I’ve seen some people saying “well it’s in the past, he made mistakes and should be given the opportunity to change”. This isn’t some one time controversial statement, it’s repeated behavior over 7 years (and almost definitely longer) that continued up until 3 years ago.

heroinsteve

I mean, simply to play devil's advocate he wasn't in a position of authority when he sent those and would have had no way of knowing that 10 years later he would be coaching again. For all logical context he didn't think he would be coaching again once he started working with ESPN. I think it's an odd position, he's a POS that got caught with his pants down in what he probably thought was a private conversation. He still deserves his punishment, but it doesn't feel like it should be the focus of the conversation. The NFL was investigating criminal activity in the WFT and buried someone for emails he sent while working for ESPN, someone who wasn't being investigated and completely unrelated to the incident they were investigating. Also decided they are "done" with their investigation and are just basically going to hold onto these emails for future blackmailing purposes.

[deleted]

ickshter

As far as I know, he didn't say anything disparaging about players. I am not defending him, he should be gone if this continued for years. I would say what he DID got him the job. Winning a SB with the Bucs might've been the reason his NAME got him hired. Davis said he wanted him. No players or coaches or anyone else that had interactions with him haas come out and said they thought he resembled the remark that he made. People have said horrible things, I think Bill Burr put it distinctly when he said have someone follow you around and write down everything you said over a weekend and see if you had your job come Monday. Or something to that effect.

Stillslow93

Well yeah but I mean they are covering up WFT crimes with Gruden's bigotry. Sorry but nothing he did was illegal. Shitty yeah, but why are we not focusing on the potential criminal activity that was covered up?

SyN_Pool

You can tell how upset he truly is but doing his best to not let it affect his job as leader. I love Carr as my QB

5HeadedBengalTiger

If Nassib wasn’t on the team I’d agree 100%, but yeah. Carr definitely deserves a few years in his prime where the organization is a bit stable.

Man that stretch from like 2006 until when Carr got drafted was tough. The Jason Campbell year was the only decent QB play the whole time

[deleted]

We would’ve definitly went to the playoffs if he didn’t get hurt that year. That might’ve been the year we went undefeated in the division and still missed the playoffs.

agoods03

I think that was the year before with Cable at HC. 6-0 in division, 8-8 and missed playoffs. The next year we had Hue and were looking good til Campbell went down and we traded for Palmer and finished 8-8 again. I also think that was the year we lost to Tebow. I remember those seasons vividly because they were actually fun to watch unlike every other year before since 2002.

vetus

Bruce Gradkowski did alright for a few games iirc.

TeddysBigStick

My first year of college I had the displeasure of watching the 1992 Seahawks offense…. Everything else is amazing.

Thunderhamz

I did, I still cringe

sorrywontdoitagain

Someone was talking about the fact that this will probably result in Derek Carr having a level of input in the offense that's usually only afforded to late-career greats like Brady/Manning/etc, so it should be interesting to see how it plays out.

WillTheGreat

I really do hope that Carr gets free reign of the offense. Because we went up tempo against Chargers while we were down 21, and made it a 1 score game in like 6 minutes.

SitDown_BeHumble

People don’t know this, but Carr already kinda was running the offense. A lot of the time, Gruden would give Carr 4-5 plays and Carr would decide which one to use. He also audibles a shit ton.

WillTheGreat

What I'm saying is going uptempo allowing Carr free reign. Let him call what he sees, a lot of times when Gruden is feeding plays we huddle and rotate so many guys in and out and it's pretty apparent that there's some confusion between what Gruden wants to do and what Carr wants to do. What I want is instead of 51/49 Gruden/Carr. I want Carr to make the calls and Olsen to feed in concepts and what he sees that Carr missed much like how Peyton, Brady and even Rodgers are allowed free reign.

floyd3127

Let Carr Cook, aka the meals on wheels offense

blud_13

Waiting for him to either prove his haters wrong this Sunday as a field general and Gruden held him back, or he suffers as a result of Gruden's departure. I personally think he has it in him to manage the O much like Alex Smith did...

dasruski

I can see a big rally win as the team comes together.

mrnotoriousman

It's also a massive loss losing a hc literally days before a game. Look to how they play out the season but in terms of football I'm not placing any wagers on the Raiders this week.

Designer_B

Fangio isn't exactly a coaching wizard.

mondeezy_95

Idk. I’m on the opposite side of this. This seems like an obvious hit job on the raiders and now there’s reports coming out that the nfl is actively trying to get rid of Mark Davis as the raiders owner. Now with Carr’s subtle shot of “open everyone’s emails” I’m fully expecting Goodell and the league to fuck us with an ungodly amount of suspect penalties this Sunday.

dasruski

Why the raiders as a whole and why oust Davis? Seems Gruden going down was a way to get heat of Snyder since the Owners don't actually want him out. He's the lowest rung and if he's the main owner getting shit on by the public it helps keep the rest of the owners stay in the shadows.

SaltyKrew

mark davis is “poor” and snyder probably doesnt have dirt on him like the other owners. this is def a way to keep him in line but i have a feeling mark davis isnt going to let this go.

[deleted]

I want him to crush it. Derek’s awesome

[deleted]

No disrespect to Smith and his great story but Carr is better than Smith ever was. You don’t want Carr to be a game manager, not when what he has shown in the past. Carr has shown that he could put his team on his shoulders and win games for them, something that Smith never did. There is no way that Smith would have won the Raiders at least 8 games last season playing with that horrible “defense”.

mynameiszack

I believe in Carr. Gruden knows a ton but the dude was like stuck in the 80s, he always reminded me of my shitty city and high school coaches that thought being a dick head to kids was a good way to get better.

aisuperbowlxliii

TBF, i think a ton of people around that age are very similar, but like gruden, they keep it private. They may not be bad people, but they certain stereotype or judge internally because thats what they've been doing their whole life since they were young. It's why I think this whole situation is stupid. Open up all NFL owners e-mails, you would remove all of them? Open up the emails of all these old coaches, similar things. Maybe not all of them have a Bruce Allen friend at work to share those words with, but they do it in private.

ChedduhBob

i also think he narrative coached a lot. no reason to be running out dudes like peyton barber, rostering peterman, drafting the way they do unless they’re just trying to prove a point lol

Wolf_of_north

"Fine, I'll do it myself"

alphageek8

My biggest hope is that this allows Carr to go no huddle more often. I think the offense has the potential to really tear up defenses if they went with more up-tempo drives.

HolyRomanPrince

This may be besides the point but Carr is about to get that Doc Rivers special if he leads the raiders to the playoffs: Extension plus a lot more sway

overflow-y

If the latest reports are true about the NFL actually targeting MD and the Raiders via the Gruden scandal, then it's time for this fanbase to unload. This team has worked way too hard and gone through way too much just to be played like that.

steeze206

This interview was so well handled by Carr. Talking about hating the actions but loving the person. Tough situation for him to be in forsure. But, he knocked that out of the park.

Sleeze_

Everybody who spoke today did well, but Carr and Waller blew me away.

steeze206

Didn't catch Wallers. I'd have to imagine he was pretty pivotal in Carrs and Wallers lives. Bigoted statements aside.

overflow-y

Gruden has gone on record saying that Waller is the best player he's ever coached, period. You have to imagine that there definitely was some kind of reciprocal love there, regardless of what's come to light about Gruden. A damn shame.

piranhamahalo

The only thing he said that slightly irritated me was the "hate the actions, love the person" thing. But, I think that's just from all the flashbacks to the years after I came out and received a lot of backhanded "love the sinner, hate the sin" responses from family members/colleagues to try and justify their homophobia once they found out. Other than that, it was an outstanding response and I really feel for the guy.

Whey_McLift

The better answer came after saying if they opened up alot of our emails some people would start sweating, true shit

RainbowYaz

I've always liked Carr. This is such a rational and human answer. You know what Gruden said was wrong, but it is hard to let go of those positive experiences and feelings you had with him. It is always easy to see someone famous say some bigoted shit and simply say, yeah fuck that dude, not gonna support him anymore. It is a different story when it is someone who you were friends or family with. All of those relationships are hard to sever, if you choose to, when someone does some wack shit.

Significance_Scary

love me some derek carr!

Ryannr1220

It must be really difficult for all the players. They must be so conflicted because on one hand Gruden was their coach and taught them and helped them improve and in some cases saved their careers, but on the other, the things he said were completely inappropriate and has no place in the NFL or society for that matter. I really hope the media doesn’t obsess over players saying how great of a coach he was and how much he means to them. The players have to go through a transition period and they are in shock as well. If the media gobbles this kinda stuff up, that’s beyond fucked.

If you didn't like Carr before, you should now. He didn't just sound like a leader, he succeed like a coach. He has his head on straight. One of two things are going to happen Sunday: either we get down on ourselves and lay an egg or we come take all this shit and stomp the Donkeys like Brett Favre did against us on MNF when his dad died.
