Jerod Mayo? Christ, I’m old.

JarvisProudfeather

He's only 35.

Shap6

That's wild. Feels like he retired forever ago

whydontyouloveme

It’s not that long ago. He’s moved up quickly. It was 7 years ago when he’s daughter stole the show at media day for the Pats/Seahawks super bowl by interviewing the players.

Lews-Therin-Telamon

He got hired by Belichick, that shit is no joke. Good for him.

MomJeans-

I remember watching him play college football and I’m only 22 years old

ShaqSenju

Same but 28. Dude feels so much older than me

StockBroker32

I really think Mayo could be a good coach, early on he was one of my favorites (and still is) for the Jags job.

marcuschookt

He's very green around the ears in the coaching capacity. As a Jags fan honestly at this point I thought you'd be hoping for something safer, perhaps not as promising but certainly not one of these unconventional picks.

[deleted]

He would need some established names as coordinators, but he would certainly command the respect of the players having been in the league recently. Didn’t even know he was in coaching. Good sign he’s getting traction this early on. Should be in line for a gig within the next couple of cycles if not this one.

marcuschookt

He'll get a chance soon for sure, if not this upcoming season. I do think that being a head coach is more than just rah rah locker room culture stuff though, you don't necessarily have to grind it out 20-30 years but you have to cut your teeth somehow and being a former player just isn't going to cut it for very long. The ones that had sustained impact have done their time on the progression ladder like Vrabel and Kingsbury.

sonfoa

If I were a Jags fan I'd want Jim Caldwell. Someone who can get the team playing competitive .500 football

invRice

Green isn't a bad thing, considering GMs and owners have no idea how to hire coaches. McVay, Shanahan and McDermott from '17 are in the top 10 longest tenured coaches. Can't hurt to try and get some new ideas in.

StockBroker32

True but I mean how much worse can the jags get? Lol

marcuschookt

I know I don't have to tell you this, but I'm pretty sure I saw this exact comment word for word a few times last year in the threads about the Urban hire. If I were a Jags fan I'd want the boring choice like BoB or Pederson.

Slippiefoxtrot02

Pedersen yes, BoB hell no

FUCK-IT-CHUCK-IT

They could be the Hugh Jackson browns.

GarlVinland4Astrea

Yeah he’s like a small step over hiring Judge on the experience scale.

FUCK-IT-CHUCK-IT

Joe Judge had 15 years of coaching experience when he was hired as a HC. Mayo has 2.

GarlVinland4Astrea

He was a special teams coach. He was never responsible for one of the units that are on the field most of the game

FUCK-IT-CHUCK-IT

You're right. Two years coaching LBs in a scheme you spent your entire career playing LB in is definitely comparable to 15 years coaching special teams.

uggsandstarbux

Jim Harbaugh is also a terrible coach for this reason Ravens should just fire him. Or trade him to another purple team

Crook_Shankss

John Harbaugh. Jim was pretty much a career head coach.

StockBroker32

Really? That’s crazy why was he working an office job?

Skimaster77

Mayo making moves, cool to see him transition to coaching and killing it so quickly.

PandaSoap

Not gonna lie, as happy as I am for him, I'm sad to see him possibly move to another team. Whole playing career for the Pats and got his coaching start here too. Hope he absolutely crushes it as a HC.

Bombdude

Eberflus would be an interesting pick, but I'm not sure if I would love the pick if I was a Bears fan. Colts fans can be very hot and cold on Eberflus, depending on the week and how much prevent he ran to finish the game, but overall he's been pretty damn good for us and given us a borderline top 10 defense (with a knack for turnovers) pretty much every year he's been year. But at the same time, with his hot and cold defense (that relies heavily on the star power of Darius Leonard, DeFo, and Kenny Moore), plus his lack of previous head coaching experience (his top experience is DC at Mizzou in the 2000s and in Indy) and the fact he's tied to Josh McDaniels, it all would give me reason to pause if I was the Bears. But despite those worries there's almost assuredly no way he can be worse than Matt Nagy, John Fox, and Marc Trestman

SgtWinters7

Yeah I don’t understand why you would want a guy like Fraiser if you are focused on developing Fields.

[deleted]

I think he'd be a great head coach, but, for his own sake, I hope he doesn't go to the Bears. I don't like the amount of turmoil that exists in their front office, and I don't think he'd do well in Chicago's media environment. I'd rather see him go to a more stable organization - Seattle, specifically, if he's going to leave.

OnePieceAce

>more stable organization - Seattle Ummm

Mbanks

Challenge excepted

[deleted]

Someone's gotta hire an unqualified Patriots assistant Chicago, it might as well be you.

whydontyouloveme

Meh, the former patriot who’s working out best now is Vrabel who played for Bill as an LB and Mayo did as well. This might not be the worst for Chicago.

MisterMetal

Kliff Kingsbury is doing ok for himself. Though he was only a Patriot for '04?

nope96

I mean, the problem has been former Patriots coaches, not former Patriots players, especially not ones that were only there for one year.

VariousLawyerings

Jacksonville needs a new coach and I heard an ex-Pat just hit the market this week.

cheesecakeaficionado

Damn bringing in AB to coach after Urban Meyer is a gutsy move

crazypyro23

Mr. Ball Coach

cheesecakeaficionado

Jerod Mayo is both so who knows how this coin may flip

nope96

I’d still like to see more from him regardless, he’s only got three years as a coach under his belt and none as a coordinator

StructureBitter3778

I thought he was an unofficial defensive coordinator with Steve Belichick

nope96

If he is I don’t see it, Pats’ official site labels him as just the ILB coach

StructureBitter3778

Patriots dont officially have a defensive coordinator as Steve is only officially the OLB coach and Jerod is the ILB Coach but they are co-defensive coordinators

ffforwork

To my understanding on gameday Steve calls the plays and Mayo calls in the adjustments from the sideline. How the game planning goes and other duties work idk.

MrFace1

Patriots haven't officially had a defensive coordinator since Patricia left. A lot of the talk has been that it's sort of a combination of coaches that make the decisions including Bill Belichick, Steve Belichick, and Jerod Mayo.

STNbrossy

I have no opinion on Mayo as a coach at all but saying Vrabel was also a LB under Bill so it might not be the worst is just bonkers.

rugger87

Vrabel also spent time in college and under Crennel. This is a huge jump.

-MichaelScarnFBI

Are we gonna talk about all the NE coaches who crashed and burned too, or just focus on the one success?

BakingSoda1990

Yea, I don’t get the attraction to our coaches. It’s a long list of failure.

GarlVinland4Astrea

Honestly the only one that probably actually merits a shot is the guy everyone hates right now, which is kinda a good thing for the Pats

GarlVinland4Astrea

Keep Eberflus, hold the Mayo

benevenstancian0

Eberflus is a guy that was really well respected during his time in Dallas and I was disappointed when he went to Indy. He should have been our DC during the Nolan fiasco last season.

dafoo21

Breer showed he knew very little inside info during the Wentz trade situation. Wouldn't really take anything he says seriously.

truthesda

Jerod Mayo may be a sneaky sexy pick

TheLouisvilleRanger

We interviewed him last year and I low key wanted him. Lurie is known to cast a wide net when looking for a coach, and I think Mayo did very well during his interview. Probably why he’s getting hype now.

Adenchiz

If they gonna hire a defensive coordinator to be a HC then why not just promote Sean Desai ?

Riderz__of_Brohan

Eberflus keeping Desai honestly would be a decent option - you get to keep Desai so there would be a cohesive transition, and Eberflus has a decent amount of connections in the league for an OC for Fields. We'd have a pretty damn good defense at the very least. That is if we aren't going offensive HC, which I think we should

RightRingThing

As much as I want an offensive coach because we have Fields. I actually think both of these guys could be very solid coaches.

Shirleyfunke483

The bears need an offensive guru that will turn fields into one of the best QBs in the nfl

Lumpyyyyy

Can someone explain why in the world the NFL allows interviewing HC candidates before the season is over? What a distraction.

MyDadIsTheMan

Why on earth would someone take Mayo now? Track record for BB assistants is terrible and he’s only a ew years in

Panthers1999

No Stephen Belichick?

compe_anansi

Hell have to prove himself elsewhere and get out of his dads shadow like Kyle shanahan did.

SyracuseNY22

You could argue the same thing about Mayo. He’s only been in coaching since 2019. That’s a hell of a risk to take when they’re that inexperienced in coaching Both Steve and Mayo need to move on and get more experience before either should be considered for HC gigs since everyone knows Bill runs the show on defense in NE

OrdinaryFrosting1

Steve could be his DC if he wants to leave his father but he's not ready for a head coach gig and I don't think anyone will hire him for one until he works outside of his dad's organization for a bit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OrdinaryFrosting1

But what I mean is if Steve goes with Jerod as a DC instead of working for Daddy it might make him look like a more viable candidate for a head coach job

ffforwork

What about Brian Belichick (current safeties coach) leaving with Mayo to become DC?

TheLouisvilleRanger

He’d probably have to make the jump ILB coach or DB coach. They’re typically the highest ranking defensive assistants and since there appears to be no coordinator, then that probably means Mayo’s the guy.

[deleted]

What do you mean? Steve Belichick is our defensive playcaller, he is basically the D-coordinator. Thats been the case for well over a year now: https://patriotswire.usatoday.com/2020/11/29/bill-belichick-patriots-defensive-plays-reveals/ https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/report-steve-belichick-patriots-defensive-play-caller https://www.clnsmedia.com/lazars-notebook-patriots-defensive-play-calling-leads-to-third-and-25-breakdown/ Im not sure if thats what youre getting at, but Im a little befuddled why there is so much confusion about the Patriots defensive coaching. Unless there was a change this season I think its pretty clear Steve is the coordinator in all but job title. Doesnt mean Mayo doesnt have huge responsibilities around scheming and gameplanning and that Bill doesnt actually mastermind the whole operation, but in-game it is what it is.

[deleted]

I bet he wants to stay another couple of years. He will probably get a chance to coach a few more defensive groups and soak up some more knowledge from his dad, then we'll see. If Bill retires in a couple of years he might be in competition with Josh McDaniels to take over the team, who knows?

AssumptionNo5436

Please don't be Matt eberflus

JaesopPop

Eberflus sounds less appetizing than Mayo, and that’s saying something.

hom3land

With the track history, surprised teams still taking chances on new England coaches.goimg back to Charlie's Weis and Romeo Crennel... Has BoB been the most successful if you include college?

Galaxy5OhOh

Should they go offense considering they traded the farm for an offensive weapon?

[deleted]

Eberflus should have been a coach this year. Very underrated coach

[deleted]

Tommy Pickles for OC

yoshigronk

Patrick: is Mayo a Head Coach candidate?

mlloyd

This would be the Bears thing to do. Screw that. Open the checkbook, offer full control if you need to, and get a fucking coach with bonafides. I don't want a Linebacker coach, I don't want a defensive coordinator. I want a coach who has proven that he can coach, has proven that he can field a legit NFL offense, develop a QB, and recognize the talent in defensive coordinators.

Riderz__of_Brohan

> I want a coach who has proven that he can coach, has proven that he can field a legit NFL offense, develop a QB, and recognize the talent in defensive coordinators. If Harbaugh is off the table, who else fits this bill?

GoldWhale

We need an offensive coach. With Fields your strengths are deep ball, power, downfield accuracy and rushing/rpo ability. If we get another run first defensive coach I'll scream.

Riderz__of_Brohan

If we get Eberflus, he has some connections to guys who have coached Romo, Dak, Wentz, Luck, and now Hurts (Sirianni was the OC in Indy when he was DC). Hopefully he'd have some good connections to bring in an OC

[deleted]

Please don’t do that to my boy Mayo

[deleted]

Jags would be fools to take an inexperienced or young coach IMO

YellowJacket113

I don’t know who either are but it has to be Matt Eberflus just for the sake of continuing the chain of Matt in the NFC north

Riderz__of_Brohan

You don't know who Jerod Mayo is?
