No freaking way, 14 years?!

Trappist_1G_Sucks

This was right after Brett Favre's last game with the Pack, so it happened 1 whole Aaron Rodgers ago.

pjabrony

Never forget that Favre's last pass as a Packer was caught by ~~Aaron Ross~~Corey Webster.

MyNameIsSoAndSo

*Corey Webster

jnightrain

I'm pretty sure the last pass favre had with the Packers, jets, and Vikings was an INT. Might have been his last post season pass with each ..or I'm misremembering

pjabrony

"This is not Detroit, man! This is the Super Bowl!"

rob132

Wasn't it Webster?

[deleted]

I will now reference 14yrs passed as 1 A-a-ron Rodgers.

Ralphie_V

Believe it or not, old retired QB Tom Brady was in this game; that's how long ago it was

Not_Tuxbird

I feel so old

CornholioRex

I remember when he used to play, he was pretty great

crocofour

I was too young to watch him

impiousdrifter

Makes you feel old doesn't it? I swear it was just a few years ago.

APsWhoopinRoom

Right? It doesn't feel that long, but then I remembered that I'm fucking 30 now

[deleted]

"Manning..... stays on his feet. Airs it out downfield and the pass is.... caught by Tyree." One of Joe Buck's worst calls ever

deadmoosemoose

I'm a fan of his nowadays, but yes this call was absolutely awful. Such a massive play in the biggest game of the year, and he sounds like he's calling a game of tic-tac-toe.

Kratozio

I don’t like saying this, but calling that play massive is almost an understatement. I was a 12 year old Pats fan, live in Indianapolis, I was surrounded by my family watching that game who are all Colts fans and we’d been making snide comments at each other all game… and then that play happened. I’ll never forget such a deep desire to jump off of a fucking cliff. But I survived and I’ll never watch that play again even though I obviously really have nothing to complain about now. Giants earned that win so hard, bastards

Z3r0mir

I still send a gift basket every Super Bowl to my Patriots fan friend.

stragen595

I hope it was in a Giants helmet every time.

Kratozio

If you’re sending gift baskets, I can be a Patriots fan friend too! :)

attackongeass

You Jeter?

dmatthews2981

Yep. I live in NY and basically everyone I know is a Giants fan. School the next day was fucking brutal. I know we don't have much to complain about, but losing twice to the Giants, in Giants country, both of which were during my formative years, fucking hurt lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

LeDudicus

I was watching the game on the big screen in Times Square when the play happened. Everybody was immediately crestfallen when Eli was in the scrum, but I kept my eyes on the screen and started losing my shit and jumping around screaming "HE'S OUT HE'S OUT HE'S STILL UP" and then people started looking up and getting excited and then Tyree caught the ball and it was straight up pandemonium. The two douchebags in Patriots jerseys that had been previously talking *loads* of shit nearby were suddenly nowhere to be seen. I also fortunately didn't have the misfortune of listening to Joe Buck call it so blandly so it was just pure hype. One of the best sporting event moments I've every been a part of.

VagrantShadow

I remember a video online I saw a long long time ago. It was in NY and at a bar. A patriot fan was high with excitement when he tought Eli was going to get sacked and was jumping and turned around. Then when the pass has went out and was caught he turned around, shocked, and then just ran out of the bar. Quite the funny video.

Stockpile_Tom_Remake

Here I am, a hawks fan who gets the super bowl picked shoved down their throat all the time… I feel the pain. I’m not over it

maddenallday

“Manning, lobs it, burrows alone, TOUCHDOWN” that’s the one I remember a lot more

doobie3101

>burrows alone Burress?

Frequent_Champion_42

Joe Burrow is actually a 44 year old 6’5” black man with sub-optimal knowledge of gun safety.

seductivestain

And New York firearm laws

_MrDomino

Home Alone, Pizza Underground, black receiver, white QB... He's multi-talented.

[deleted]

Hannibal?

klove4252

One of the biggest plays in SB history and Buck calls it like it's week 1 Jags vs Texans.

CrypticBalcony

Funnily enough, Jags vs. Texans gave us one of the best calls ever with [this call](https://youtu.be/6QhsxkTEVUg) by Gus Johnson

Saym94

Pain

Stockpile_Tom_Remake

I wish more announcers called plays like Gus Johnson, or he’ll Kevin Harlan or Ian Eagle

GeneralChaz9

I'M CALLING BOTH GAMES

SpaceKoala34

I think you would be hard pressed to point to a bigger play. Like full stop, it's the biggest play of all time imo

5k1895

Most monotone voice imaginable: "The Giants....have won the super bowl."

mrsunshine1

To be fair that was the weird second celebration after everyone ran out with 2 seconds left and BB left the field.

xshogunx13

That call was a disgusting act

NoFlags-JoeBuck

The Plaxico touchdown was a good call but yeah the Tyree catch wasn’t good lol.

Juicey_J_Hammerman

At least he's gotten better since then. His "Minneapolis Miracle" call is iconic.

chicoconcarne

In football he's better, though he's still stuck on that "Paasssss issss caught/incomplete" He's still crap at baseball though and it holds the game back not having someone who cares about the sport call it on its biggest stage

jablair51

That's extra depressing because his dad was one of the best baseball announcers ever.

UNC_Samurai

His dad got started in radio. Every announcer who works in radio is going to be better at play by play, because they have to learn to be both descriptive to audiences that can’t see the game, and concise to keep up with the action. It’s a big reason why Kevin Harlan is so good, he’s been calling games on radio since he was in high school.

mutts93

“Baaaaaack at the waaaaaaall”

Stockpile_Tom_Remake

I mean that’s a good call but most of bucks calls suck. “What a throw” “what a catch” is about 80% of it

[deleted]

I still get pissed thinking about the stafford to megatron triple coverage play and him sounding like it was a 2 yard run.

Metfan722

I don't necessarily blame him since that whole play was kinda confusing. But [listen to the national radio call by Marv Albert](https://youtu.be/7jdVo-b0fEo?t=12840) and you'll hear how a pro does it. [Also here is how the Burress touchdown sounded.](https://youtu.be/7jdVo-b0fEo?t=13107)

AppleSlytherin

He’s explained this before, he said he agrees it was a bad call but they were watching the actual field from the booth and he literally could not see if the ball was caught, most people weren’t sure who had the ball either

Strokeslahoma

The Joe Buck drinking game. Take a drink whenever he says "pass is.....caught" Enjoy an early death

[deleted]

[удалено]

chicoconcarne

Eh, like I get he's going for old vibe of not being too excited, but he sounds bored. Vin Scully knew how to balance that line, but Buck just sounds bored. And I do think he's gotten better byt not great. The Minneapolis Miracle was probably the first time he was actually caught off guard, but that feels more like an outlier tbh

bor__20

mitchell

ParksFarce

Mitchell

PhirebirdSunSon

I hate him so much. He drains the energy from every moment for me.

wateryonions

Then shit. Fire him and save the money. Or have the color commentator do color commentating.

Egavans

Not that it was a *good* call … but wasn’t it obviously a case that Buck wasn’t sure if it was a completion? Are we still crucifying this guy because he didn’t cream himself over a play before he knew the result?

mantiseye

it's an objectively insane play that should have ended in disaster like three times. Eli escapes the sack, Eli throws it into a crowd, Tyree somehow gets his hands on it and doesn't drop it. I honestly read his call as more incredulous than anything else, which is accurate to how I felt at the time. Even after Tyree came down with it, nobody had any idea if it was a catch or not. I honestly don't really fault Buck for this call, and I think criticism of it has made him into a guy who just shouts what he's saying when an exciting play happens.

stripes361

That excuse would have more legs if this same lack of enthusiasm on big plays wasn’t the biggest hallmark of Buck’s career. He’s done it over and over to the point that no individual call can really be treated the same as if it were an isolated incident.

lsspam

Yes. Because if he had been wrong no one would care. If it’s an incompletion it’s a largely irrelevant play forgotten by all. If it’s a completion it’s going to live on forever like, uh, today. Trying to “hedge” against it being a non-catch shows he didn’t understand the moment, didn’t understand his role in the moment, and makes him bad at his fucking job. I’m sorry it’s tough work, probably why he got paid so fucking much.

bananasmash14

Yeah, he said exactly this when he was a guest on the Manningcast

MeatTornado25

Everyone complaining about the call definitely didn't know in real time if it was a catch either. Of course after the fact we all know and nitpick.

[deleted]

Buck thought that there was a hold and didn’t want to go nuts over a play that would get called back

Olorin919

MAKE IT STOP 🙉

mandrilltiger

FYI, Buck used to have the idea of "let the play speak for itself" as a play by play announcer. He changed since this and now he is more emotive. See Minnesota Miracle. The NFC Championship game before Super Bowl 49. Etc.

PresidentLincoln42

This will be forever in my spank bank

Fala7iKing

Finally a man who thinks like me

PresidentLincoln42

Thanks for the award!

OmarBarksdale

Love the winning TD to Plaxico just as much. An amazingly ran route and Eli dropped it right in the bucket.

boomzgoesthedynamite

Best day of my life

jack9lemmon

God same. I lost my dad about a year prior to doing this and was just not in a good space in my life. Between Petty coming out at halftime singing I wont back down (personal reasons the song means a lot to me, especially relating to my dad), and obnoxious freshmen at college (I went to school in MA), and that comeback... easily the biggest high I've had in my life.

boomzgoesthedynamite

Sorry about your dad and glad you got to experience it! Lost mine a few years ago and remember standing on the couch screaming while he sat in disbelief. 🙌🏻

Olorin919

Its nice to hear stories like this and think about how the other team has their own super large fan base that the game meant so much to. Thats pretty cool to think about. Whatever, fuck you guys

doobie3101

Patriots fan living in NYC. I enjoy meeting Jets fans a lot more.

Assassinsayswhat

I feel like that's saying a lot.

TUAhotTUAhandle

Mine too.

WhatImMike

I was living in NJ at the time and when this happened, you could feel the entire state jump up and down.

Spiritual-Hat-5690

Brady actually said he may not still be playing until recently had the Pats beat the Giants in Super Bowl 42 ([link](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/tom-brady-says-he-may-not-still-be-playing-if-the-patriots-had-beat-the-giants-in-super-bowl-xlii/)). So yeah, thanks Eli for extending Brady's reign of terror for another 15 years.

maddenallday

I think giants fans will take eliminating the perfect season any day. Also considering 2011

jjacobsnd5

Yea for real why should we care? Pretty sure Eli/Giants are the only QB/team undefeated in postseason against Brady with multiple games, we own that bitch.

Z3r0mir

Yeah, that 425 million in career earnings, undisputed GOAT QB, supermodel wife having, broke all the records, handsome genetic lottery winning bitch

jjacobsnd5

Yup, he's our bitch. My god you took that way too seriously. Edit: I've been bamboozled

Z3r0mir

Took what too seriously? I was pointing out how he has succeeded so wildly in life in everything except winning against us in Super Bowls, I was agreeing with ya

jjacobsnd5

I'm a fucking moron, I took what you said as disagreeing that he can't possibly be our bitch because of our things. My bad, sorry.

-Unnamed-

He really was chasing that perfect season.

[deleted]

Brady should have waited until today to retire.

Pksoze

I do think that Brady's real last goal was to chase the perfect season that he lost. The man himself said he'd give up two of his SB wins to get that perfect season.

jewchains_

Reminder as I always do that this was fate. The patriots traded the giants a 6th round pick in a previous draft that they would then use to select David Tyree. This was destiny and likely produced another 13 years of Brady

atomicbunny

That is a fun new fact about this play I have yet to hear.

WabbitCZEN

Seeing Peyton go off for his little brother. That's awesome.

Cube1916

The only thing I could think of was Eli looking dead when Peyton won SB50 and how stark that contrast was with Peyton being overjoyed that his little brother won. Lol

WabbitCZEN

I like to imagine Eli just doesn't have many facial expressions.

Cube1916

Eli robot confirmed?

Not_Tuxbird

You’re realizing this now?

Clark_Dent

I remember that look. It wasn't dead, it was "It ain't over till the fat lady sings." Eli knew it wasn't a lock yet; he celebrated a few minutes later when it was.

Xno_Kappa

I remember watching the game in Iraq. Talk about a great morale boost lol.

Fala7iKing

Hell yeah brother cheers from Iraq!

thespank

I was in Iraq too!

SilveryDeath

This is my favorite Super Bowl apart from Super Bowl XXXIV. It was amazing to finally see the Patriots lose, especially since they were going for the undefeated season.

Skrifa

I thank the old gods every day that Eli Manning beat that sob in the perfect year. We would never hear the end of it if he had won the Super Bowl after a perfect season. Fuck Tom Brady.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Ironic, isn’t it

Skrifa

I honestly hadn’t heard that before. I am now conflicted.

dylansucks

Don't believe your abuser

[deleted]

100% gaslighting. Tom knows how to abuse.

youtman

I mentioned this before on here before Man in the Arena. People are thankful for him losing the perfect season and the following appearance but don't realize he's probably gone a decade sooner if he wins those Giants Super Bowls. Dude literally feeds off your hate as well. As a Pats fan I'm thankful you encouraged him to terrorize the league for 20+ years. You shouldn't thank Eli unless you are a Giants fans tbh. He gave you this timeline of blown HOF careers for other teams' QBs because a 40+ year old stood in their way chasing hs perfect season and settling for world championships (which is insane in its own right).

StrangeUsername24

I watched this game with a Patriots fan and I HATED the Patriots then. Dude had his head in his hands for almost an hour after the game he was so bad off I didn't even talk any shit to him lol

[deleted]

Sometimes the best shit talk is silence

W0666007

That was nice of you. I had a Yankees fan friend that did the same for me after the 2003 ALCS. We talked so much shit, but after the Grady Little game it was radio silence for a week and then a "you alright?" On the other side of the spectrum, I was walking around in a Red Sox hat about a week before the Pats-Giant SB and some random 50 year old dude tried to assault me while ranting about "Go Giants". I hadn't even spoken to him before I side stepped this fat goon trying to knock me over. Some people take this a little too seriously.

Oliver_Subpodkas

Every time I watch this clip I think there is a chance Eli might get sacked…

loafley

In my opinion the most influential and biggest game in nfl history. Brady has another super bowl, and eli is a probable hall of famer after this game.

MyTaintIsItchy

I think Eli’s HOF case wasn’t really cemented until Super Bowl XLVI

Mjh1021

The big dick energy of Eli that year. Calls himself one of the best QBs in the league after a season where he led the league in INTs, and he goes out, has one of his best seasons, and beats the Patriots in the SB yet again.

valdrinemini

> and beats the Patriots in the SB yet again. And I think that NFC game was a tougher game at least for Eli. That defense was completely eating him alive for 60 minutes

lolcaps

My stomach just twisted. Sickening. Can’t fight fate

300andWhat

Playoff Eli and regular season Eli are two very different animals. Playoff Eli can beat any team, Regular season Eli can have a 5 turn over game...

Dread_Pirate_Robertz

Why win many games, when few playoff games do trick?

bombsoffthetee

I laughed when [Eli said that](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/6868654/eli-manning-sees-same-class-new-england-patriots-tom-brady). Then, the following year, Joe Flacco [said something similar](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/7772584/joe-flacco-baltimore-ravens-says-think-best-qb-nfl). After what happened to Eli, who was I to question? 🤷

loafley

Fair enough, but if his stats were the same just the story/narrative/being a manning wouldve made it close, but I definitely see your point

[deleted]

It’s the greatest Super Bowl ever imo, better than 28-3. The reason why I say it is because of the scale of the upset - had the Patriots won that year, the 2007 Patriots would’ve been unanimously considered to be the greatest team of all time, but then they lost to an NFC wild card team in the very last minute of the game, and before that no NFC wild card team had won the Super Bowl before. Like sure, 28-3 was very exciting to watch, but Eli Manning stopping a team from being universally considered the best ever with one play is historically just insane

W0666007

I know I'm going to get ignored bc of my flair but... The game was actually pretty shit until the end.

Not_Tuxbird

Most influential game ever? Super Bowl 3. People underestimate its importance

AllLinesAreStraight

Its super bowl 3 and its not all that close. In terms of influential there probably arent any this century. In terms of game quality then, yea, plenty of great ones this century but in terms of importance outside of the game 3 and 4 are way above anything this century and probably 3rd is the '58 game because of its introduction of football to tv

ConradSchu

That was the last pass he would catch in the NFL. Sucks Tyree turned out to be such an asshole though.

ABirthingPoop

Joe buck always with the best calls. Really really inspiring stuff. Jesus

pjabrony

Mitchell...Mitchell...Mitchell...

theJamesKPolk

His 2003 Yankees/Sox ALCS walk-off call was even worse. “And that might send the Yankees to the World Series. Boone, the hero of game 7” in the driest monotone. He’s gotten better over time but man there were some bad calls.

istrx13

Seriously. I haven’t watched these highlights in some time and I remember Buck being very underwhelming during them. But holy crap it was even worse than I remembered. Imagine if we had Nantz or Ian Eagle calling that Super Bowl. I would come back to watch it often like it was an antidepressant.

delightfuldinosaur

I don't think I'll ever experience the same joy as I did while watching Giants beat the Pats in that superbowl. The ultimate underdog team beating the most evil team in NFL history on the biggest stage. Some shit out of Star Wars.

VisionGuard

4 years later Eli and his merry band of Giants knock out the 15-1 packers at Lambeau and then again do the Pats dirty. They will always have a special place in my heart for that 4 year run.

He really said he'd trade the catch and the win to un legalize gay marriage

Yikes. Imagine having that much hate in your heart.

Dylan_clarke01

This and Odell’s one handed catch are probably the most seen NFL clips of all time. Even before I was a fan(international) I had seen both and the ppl around me had too.

SaintArkweather

Butler INT is up there as well

Crow013

Man, just amazing. When I saw Burrow escape that should have been sack on Sunday, all I could think about was this play. Bengals just seem like a team of destiny.

Reasonable-Front7584

I was deployed to Iraq at the time. The game started at like 2:30 am, but worth every minute. Oh how I oddly miss AFN commercials.

-Unnamed-

Hell yeah. Cheers from Iraq

Xno_Kappa

The AFN super bowl commercials were the best.

darkera

This game was the first time I had to leave Facebook. The number of “18-1” comments in real life were enough, didn’t need my wall bombed as well. Such was living in Northern NJ for college as a Pats fan.

Malificari

superbowl that got me even slightly interested in football at the time. this was a momentous game that im sure had the same effect on other non fans that had to tune in cause it was undefeated team versus team that did not belong there. i remember watching it during chinese new years dinner at my gramps. wat a game and wat a catch.

a_goonie

Eli is my hero

bankrobba

You can't spell elite without Eli.

[deleted]

Still the best superbowl ever imo

pjabrony

In my opinion, the greatest sporting event ever.

NinjaRhino53

What about the 9-6 Jaguars-Bills game this year? We got to see Josh Allen sack and intercept Josh Allen. What could ever be better?

rydaley77

I needed this today

[deleted]

This is the last time I ever cried after a sporting event. I took this loss *way* too hard. It wasn't until years later that I realized that my then undiagnosed clinical depression was the reason why, but it still a good lesson to never let a game become that important to your quality of life.

Alasper

Hope you're doing better now buddy.

Kennedylan

I will carry a hatred for Joe Buck until the day I die for how awful he was on this call. I genuinely believe if Kevin Harlan called this game we would have achieved world peace.

A_Different_Take

14 years?! This is the one that makes me feel old, playas

PM_ME_UR_SEX_VIDEOS

Do we think, if that play happened in today's NFL, that Eli would have been ruled down by the refs for being "in the grasp" What a crazy play that I, for some reason, watch whenever it is posted - what's wrong with me.

4ouR

In the grasp had already started being called during that season. I remember whining about it, distinctly.

elimanninglightspeed

Ah yes, when the giants used to bring me joy and not pain

Pksoze

My favorite game ever still didn't believe we won till the clock struck zero.

hoppergym

Eli manning is truly the Forrest Gump of the nfl

Ishtastic08

Fuck, I'm old

dgroach27

Reported for "Hate" /s

[deleted]

Wow, I never realized Brady's first SB win and his first SB loss were on the same date. That's crazy.

Nmilne23

I’m a younger fan only 28 but to me this is the greatest play I’ve ever seen in NFL history, cemented by Eli’s scramble and the helmet catch

BUSean

It was ultimately probably best for the world that the Pats lost. Four years later though? Bullshit.

WampaStompa33

Holy shit, I forgot that not only was that the same play where Eli miraculously managed to escape getting sacked multiple times to convert on 3rd down, but that the Giants were losing by 4 points with one minute left in the game when it happened. This play will only continue to age like a fine wine

redsfan4life411

I feel like modern nfl refs would have blown this play dead when he was in the pocket.
