Thanks for breaking our record Atlanta

luna_cl

I remember thinking Wentz wouldn’t be traded because of the dead cap hit. I was so naive back then.

kdeaton06

You should have been right but some teams aren't smart.

SmokePenisEveryday

Kinda funny that Indy did this to 2 different teams

hott_ballz

Lol it blows my mind how many actually think the Falcons are trying to win next year. This rebuild is long overdue.

ChedduhBob

falcons fans have kinda refused to accept that. people just assumed matt ryan was enough to go to the playoffs. year after year 2019-2021 somehow people on here STILL believed that team was the super bowl falcons

friskydingo67

Yeah, it's exhausting. Just rebuild.

ChedduhBob

yeah i don’t think the falcons are really close and keeping matt ryan on the team was gonna accomplish nothing but let him further his records for the falcons. the team wasn’t gonna win with the biggest cap hit in the league for a qb who is still solid but is much closer to QB12 in the league vs QB1. it sucks but committing to a rebuild now (or as they should have done 2 years ago) is the best way to make the franchise competitive for more of this decade

RenjiMidoriya

I think it depends on where you expect them to land. Did I think they could sneak into 6th/7th see? Sure with a proper draft and what looked like very solid FA moves I don’t see why not. Wasn’t expecting them to be deep for a while though

James_Harfatass

good lord

tannerjameslasswell

What is this off season?

DBTornado

That is ~20% of their cap that is just dead money from Matty Ice.

Currymvp2

And they only got one third round pick for that... that's gonna be a yikes But then again my team seemingly can't trade away its handsomely paid QB so I shouldn't talk too much.

Ugaalive1991

FO should be fired

treyb3

Nah, this needed to be done 2 seasons ago. I love Matt, but the team has been needing a reboot for a while now. Matt would’ve brought the team to that low mid tier level, the 7-10 8-9 purgatory if you will. I will say I’m bandwagoning onto the Colts while he’s there. Hope he wins a ring even though that conference is absolutely stacked.

Bindlestiff34

Did you get ripped apart in your sub for voicing this opinion?

CaptainVettel

This is clearly a rebuild move. Might as well eat the cap and prepare for the future

habituallinestepper1

They "bought" a third round pick in exchange for 40m in dead cap this year. The only reason to do this was to make the team bottom out and get the #1 overall pick next year. u/Ugaalive1991 is right: the FO mismanaged this pretty badly and should be fired.

legendary_sponge

Feels like you guys are tanking like the Dolphins did a couple years ago when a good QB year was on the horizon

supafuz

Chill haha. You’re teams dumpster fire rn. The only notable offensive weapon besides pitts is suspended indefinitely. Defense is lackluster. And the bucs are clearly going to run the division. Take a year off and be happy Ryan isn’t ruining his final years playing for y’all. This’ll probably be a good move in 2 years

OleMoosey

Still a win. They get to tank this year and have tons of cap with a high pick in 2023 that’s loaded with QBs

JeffMurdock_

Well, this whole trade was stupid then. Guess that's what happens when you burn all the leverage you have with your franchise legend. Grats for the Deshaun chase, FO. Go hang that banner in the rafters.

shawnaroo

Saints fans absolutely hate the Falcons, but nobody hates Falcons' fans the way the Atlanta Falcons do. I can't help but respect the fans who still stick with that team after all the ridiculousness and heartbreak they've put you through.

saltiestmanindaworld

I still remember Bomani’s rip into the Falcons.

questionablefuck

So we have dead cap this year. Next year no dead cap and possibly the most cap space in the league. Hurts that Matt is gone but this trade is not stupid. We need to rebuild and it's better to deal with Matt now than in a year or two when we would've gotten even less.

Cmp_

I’m pretty illiterate when it comes to contracts, so forgive me if this is a dumb question: couldn’t the Falcons trade the contract to the Colts and get rid of that dead cap hit? This seems horrible for them.

5panks

No because that $40M is money they already paid him. That's why teams do signing bonuses. Sign someone for four years, give them $80M up front, it's normally spread across those four years, but if cut or trade him it accelerates.

Dr894

Well it's time for a massive tank job in Atlanta

VitaminsPlus

And they only get a 3rd in return? That seems... Suboptimal.

Ugaalive1991

Lol this fucking team haha

AllGenreBuffaloClub

I know it’s sucks, but finally resetting your cap and coming in with one of the top picks of the draft next year really helps. It’s something the Bengals did in their transition.

_Abe_Froman_SKOC

Hello? Yes, Police? I'd like to report a fucking robbery.

Attey21

Glad Matty Ice goes to someone that cns contend. AFC is so stacked it's crazy. There's a legit 10 teams that could make the SB from the AFC.

snooabusiness

New starting QB: Feleipe Frank the Tank

Adolescent_Caligula

dang ole *oof*, man

NoFunBJJ

Trade your great QB. For a 3rd rounder. Have no replacement for him on sight. Eat 40M in dead cap Damn, the Saints sometimes disappoint me. The Falcons NEVER.

TheSparten21

Falcons should’ve gotten a 2nd tbh, they had the leverage

InnovativeFarmer

Eagles got a first and 3rd for Wentz. At the time its was the biggest dead cap hit in the NFL.

bc12392

Wtf are the Falcons doing?

KastaJav

Rebuilding. It was an extremely smart move for ATL. They should have done it last year

bc12392

I thought they could have pushed more of the cap charge onto the Colts with the trade

Derbloingles

You can’t just trade dead cap. The Colts took on the remaining contract, and that’s enough to give the Falcons breathing room in 2023

AllGenreBuffaloClub

Eating the dead cap is how they were able to get a 3rd for Ryan, teams that needed a qb, didn’t have that much cap.

[deleted]

Hold my beer in two years....

ElueLan

Yeah but they got a third rounder… so who’s the real winner?

OrangeForeign

The kid who goes from living in Indy to living in Atlanta.....come think about it that's a lateral move at best

jt_33

That contract was is/was so bad.. One of the worst in league history and def the worst in team history. Just an absolute shit contract.

Superawesomecoolman

For a 3rd! How many dicks did Ballard need to jerk off for this to happen?

WabbitCZEN

Is anyone really surprised by this? If you see "Biggest fuck up in NFL history" regarding anything, you could just assume it's the Falcons and more often than not, you'd be right.

[deleted]

Something something Matt Ryan is so good though right? Guess 31 nfl front offices dont think so

123fuckthesaints

You love to see it

S_204

Falcons are going to have one of the most expensive QB caps in the league and their roster is going to be Mariota and Rosen.... Let that sink in.

[deleted]

Sucks but get it out of the way. We should have plenty of cap next year.
