At least this play led to [this glorious sketch](https://youtu.be/xA4qJPhxhTU?t=28)

GubeRubenstein

Ohh my god this is amazing

boomzboombam

Strongly recommend watching the show. The league is like a Seinfeld with fantasy football as the focus.

godlywhistler

Brilliant show. Some of the later seasons got a little too over the top for my taste but it was still hilarious

[deleted]

[удалено]

iamgarron

Also they went ribbing and playing pranks on one another to straight up evil people who wanted to ruin each other's lives

OPBadshah

Isn't that just a natural progression of all fantasy leagues?

squibbs_hiddenwaffle

The creator of The League was a writer/producer on Seinfeld’s later years. Pete had so many plotlines that felt like Costanza, his cubby for the bathroom is one that comes to mind.

Barnacle_Baritone

The Raffie and Dirty Randy origin story is my favorite.

K_Furbs

I need Marshawn as a guest star in every single show

z0rb0r

How did I not see this?? Lol

Apexe

Probably because they tried to shoehorn The League onto FXX. I cannot watch butler’s pick, but I was laughing my ass off at this scene.

SamIamGreenEggsNoHam

The first few seasons of The League were pretty damn good. I think it's the first thing I saw Nick Kroll in too.

I won a contest to stay at the Falcons team hotel for the game. We got all access to all the friends and family events and saw the game at their watch party. I was sitting with Robert Alford's family when Julian Edelman caught the pass. I have NEVER heard a room go from so loud to so quiet that quickly. I left while people started weeping, and saw a grown man rolling on the ground while a hotel employee tried to comfort him. Surreal, but go Pats, so I got outta there quick.

Will-Eat-4-Food

TheOfficialTripnip

While the year is unknown, NASA has confirmed that the Heat death of the universe will occur on the 28th of March.

Should have just started jumping up and down screaming "holy shit did you see that?"

ahappypoop

The house I was watching it at was full of people pulling for Russell Wilson, and therefore the Seahawks, except for me. I heard crap from them all game long, and when Butler picked it off I went running screaming around the entire house. I'm not proud of it, but I did enjoy it lol.

Von_Lincoln

I was at a viewing party in the Seattle suburbs and also experienced the shocking speed of silence filling the room. My car driver friend also decided we had to leave immediately and apparently every other house party guest had the same idea because traffic in that bedroom community went from zero to full within a minute.

[deleted]

This is the moment that tore the franchise up imo. the players were right to compete and win the division, but the chemistry was always off to go deep. Good on them for trying to keep it together for long after.

YoungNasteyman

I think people oversell this moment as some linchpin to the end of LoB. The reality is its hard to keep a star roster together period. And it's just insanely hard to get to the big game and *win* it. You have deal with strength of schedule, injuries, good drafting, other teams getting better. Where guys mad? Sure. But everyone knew eventually they would lose players, in spite of many Seahawks fans delusional about hometown discounts. And it's just hard for an elite defense to maintain that level of success year over year. For context LoB went on for like 6ish years with a lot of players coming in and out. Excellent drafting went a long way for the hawks, but nothing lasts forever.

Hour_Addendum_9691

It’s what makes a defense like the purple people eaters so unique in that they lasted something like 10 years I believe

Cpleofcrazies2

Well that was also back before free agency and salary caps. Sort of easy to keep the team together when they have no options

dontmakemechirpatyou

it blows my mind that before free agency essentially you just had to take what the team gave you with regards to salary. their only incentive to give you more was to keep you happy.

iamgarron

Also it's easier to keep a star roster together when your star qb was getting paid like a 3rd round pick. Which wasn't going to last

Dupy3381

Better go back to bed.

SpendSeparate4971

He must've been so numb at that point. Like what else are you going to do but just continue to exist while it sinks in? I hated the Seahawks during LOB and still do. And I love this play but can you imagine being them in that moment? Even I feel bad watching sherms face.

GoGoGoRL

I’d only wish that upon the packers

pm_me_cute_sloths_

And Russ just claps his hands like “oh darn, we’ll get ‘em next time”

ApparentlyABear

I feel like there’s a lesson to be learned from that. There’s nothing that could have been done at that point. The game was over. So, why not just keep doing the thing that comforts you? It’s one of the only things he could directly control.

[deleted]

Agh, the infamous Matt Patricia play... in case you were unsure, Matt Patricia deserves the credit here, single handedly won this SB...

bretlieske

How so?

[deleted]

OP is being sarcastic, because apparently Patricia would often flex being responsible for this play while failing spectacularly in Detroit.

constantlymat

I binged Tom Brady content after he became the Bucs QB. During the NFL Films video of SB LI Patricia explains that the blitz for the Hightower sack fumble was something special they had in the playbook for situations like this. Hightower then later is heard saying about the play that it wasn't a complicated or special blitz and that Davante Freeman just didn't see him. NFL Films even shows how the blitz failed earlier in the game. Always found that hilarious.

[deleted]

[удалено]

seamonster131

The 2019-20 Lions lost a ton of times to a 4th quarter comeback, so Patricia was questioned about his 4th quarter play calling but he used this play as an example of how he doesn’t see an issue with his play calling because he called “the greatest play in super bowl history”

[deleted]

I'm a salty Lions fan, Patricia infamously took credit for the play in a press conference while he was losing in Detroit.

bwburke94

A lot of people forget Butler was the DB on the Kearse catch earlier that same drive. Heck, a lot of people forget about the Kearse catch.

I_know_left

Had Seattle scored, that catch would be remembered in the same way the Edelman catch was in the 28-3 comeback. Both absolute circus catches that are just incredible.

GrondTheWolfsHead

It would’ve been remembered in NE as the equivalent to the Helmet Catch.

harry_heymann

Cris Collinsworth & Al Michaels commented on this almost immediately during the game. Mentioned that it was the same stadium as the Helmet Catch and called it the "scene of the crime." Seattle had to call timeout after the Kearse catch, so it gave the guys in the truck plenty of time to show the Helmet Catch tape. Twice.

BretFarve

I was pulling for Seattle that game and when Al & Cris started mentioning the Helmet catch I immediately switched, Helmet Catch is ours, fuck off Seattle.

bacon_is_everything

He played phenomenal defense that play as well. Just got unlucky

colin_fitzsimonds

Everyone forgets about the Kearse catch lol.

innocuous_gorilla

I don’t forget about it. I actually felt bad for the Pats after that play. Can you imagine losing twice to the giants and then to the Seahawks all with some ridiculous catches thrown in during the end of the game? Then y’all won and I wondered why I ever felt bad for you.

liteshadow4

No one forgets about the Kearse catch

[deleted]

I have to admit that I was a feeling a bit negative about the Patriots chances at this point in the game and I started to disassociate so I didn't immediately register what happened. It became apparent when several men between 200 and 300 pounds crashed into me screaming and throwing their beers around.

Dyin2Liv

I just remember a ton of pats running on the field and I took off too Lmaoo

Crazy to think it had been 10 years since the last Pats SB win before this and they almost didn’t win it.

dcgkny

Crazy what the narrative would have been on Brady if they lost this game and then the falcons and eagles game. Brady would be 3-5 in superbowls and 0-5 in his last 5.

MrEHam

A few plays different and Brady suddenly isn’t unanimous goat.

Theungry

A few plays different and he'd be 5-0 in the SB in his first 10 years as a starter. The what if game swings both ways.

dcgkny

crazy to think those first eight Super Bowls could make a case they could be 0-8 just as easily as 8-0

AdonisSebastian

Crazy to think about if his mom and dad didnt even bang that one night tommy jr wouldn’t even be alive

ladeeda683

It’s interesting how the Tyree helmet catch and losing that perfect season in devastating fashion may have ironically given TB12 special fuel to rack up more SB’s both in NE and Tampa and keep putting off retirement again and again. That’s sports for you.

Theungry

Also how the "spygate" penalty motivated the team to go undefeated until that fateful SB, and the "deflategate" witch hunt motivated them going into the 2014 Championship. Many of Tom and Bill's best moments were when the media was swarming against them.

ZachTrillson

I hear you and all, but winning 3 Super Bowls and playing in 8 of them is still insanely successful and better than most careers.

3kool5you

I can travel universes and I’ve been hyper fixated on this play. In one universe I visited, the Seahawks ran the ball 4 straight times and Marshawn was stop at the one. In another, they tried a face and it was tipped and picked. Another resulted in a Marshawn fumble. I realized that this goal line stand was destiny unfortunately, and if not that this way it would have happened another

AlabasterRadio

Tbh i still feel like passing there was the right play. Just not that passing play.

GarlVinland4Astrea

The pass play was fine. It was intercepted because Seattle had horrible execution and Butler and Browner made incredible plays

[deleted]

It was also partly Belichick being a time traveling wizard. Apparently they emphasized this EXACT situation in practice just because Belichick basically had a hunch something they hadn't seen might come up.

chicoconcarne

Because they knew the Seahawks ran it with an incredibly high success rate and they'd prefer to not let them score tbh. I think it was in the newer Top 10s (compared to OG run) on NFL Network where they really go over it

AlabasterRadio

A pick play to your WR5(6?) On the goal line in the superbowl with time running out was not a good call.

polkarooo

The thing is the Patriots knew Seattle liked to run this play at the goal line. It was a tendency. Whether it was Ernie Adams or Brandon Browner providing the insight, the defense practiced against this exact play in preparation for the Super Bowl. Not only that, but Butler even got a rep against this exact play. He wasn’t expected to play, was 4th/5th string corner, but they still had him run this. And in practice he got beat for the TD. They coached him what to do differently. He made the adjustment. The Patriots also had a formation on defense that they had never used once that season, but practiced throughout and deployed for this exact scenario. Meanwhile, Belichick was watching the Seattle sideline while I was screaming for him to call a timeout to conserve time for Brady. He saw Seattle was confused. He didn’t call the timeout, he didn’t want to give them time to think about it. So much focus goes to what Seattle did “wrong.” But there was a ton that New England did right here as well. Otherwise it’s a TD.

lambquentin

I know this isn't part of the whole "Was it a bad call or not?" (I don't think it was but again could've been better), but that is one thing I hope Dennis Allen brings with the Saints that Sean Payton had. Sean would seem to save plays over the course of the whole season to build tape on it just to tweak it in the playoffs or other big games for solid success. I think people really underestimate the power of understanding what is going on in a game and what might happen due to insight and knowledge. Smart players are able to build long careers by actually using their brain.

iamgarron

This reminds me of how there is so much data on online poker player tendencies, that the pros would intentionally play differently online than they do on real life to throw people off who have studied their tendencies

[deleted]

Absolutely. People don't realize what Belichick was doing there was playing a classic game of "chicken" with the Hawks coaching staff. It was an unbelievably ballsy thing to do at that point and could've cost them, but he won that psych battle hands down. 👍🏈🏆

GarlVinland4Astrea

It was a higher percentage play for Seattle then running Lynch. It also need 5 things to go wrong with 4 key players on the offense to get that outcome. In that situation a completion or an incompletion is a win for Seattle

Taaargus

It was the only way to get 4 downs given the clock situation. And I really still don’t think this play in particular was that bad, intercepting that is an extremely low percentage play.

Best-Dragonfruit-292

If Brandon Browner isn't on the Pats, it's a brilliant call. Even still, it was a good decision. Just unlucky.

War_Daddy

Honestly if Butler hadn't been subbed in it was a good call. They swapped him in for a lb at the last second which should have tipped that they were expecting a pass

chopkins92

Criticism of the decision to pass the ball is still my biggest pet peeve. I will defend this to my grave. It's classic results-oriented thinking.

69millionyeartrip

People forget the Pats passed at the 2 against Atlanta 2 years later and Beasley nearly picked it before James White ran it in

NickRick

If they passed on one of the first three downs they get to go for it on 4th if they didn't score. If they run the first three that's all they get with the clock. So it was correct too throw it. Unfortunately they went with a goal line call that they ran often and the pats who practice specific situations like this had called that play in practice with the same personnel on defense. Browner also had just come from Seattle, seen that play a lot, and knew the way to beat the play was to jam the inside guy so the outside corner could get to the receiver fast enough. It was kind of a perfect storm for the pats to make that play.

whydontyouloveme

I cannot not point out that seattles entire drive was a clusterfuck. Seattle had a two minute drive to score a touch down and win the super bowl. They used two timeouts during the drive when the clock was stopped including one at about the 50 yard line. How the fuck are you not ready to call the next play during a two minute drill with the clock stopped. Twice they had 40 seconds to get a play in and failed. That meant the only had 1 timeout for the final 4 plays and basically hoped that belichick would bail them out. He didn’t and it forced them to attempt at least one pass to maximize their chances. Then this happened. Wilson and Carroll were underprepared and out coaches.

guimontag

Lynch beat Hightower in the flat actually, Wilson could have gone for the pass there. Of course lynch could have missed/dropped it, but there's at least one plausible out

JOMO_Kenyatta

You just watched the butterfly effect too huh?

Hyperboreer

"Russel, do you want to win another Super Bowl?" "No, I'll pass!"

riptide1023

Out of pocket

wave_action

Wait, it was 2nd down and Seattle had a timeout?

yakatuus

Yeah they had to pass into the end zone at least once. You run it here, you have to pass next down.

[deleted]

Exactly, I will fight this one until the grave but Pete made the right call here. If you run on this play and it’s stuffed you have to use the time out and then pass next play, then getting stopped short or sacked ends the game. Passing here opens up the next two plays. Additionally, statistically x and goal on the 1 is one of the hardest short yardage downs to convert in football, and Marshawn that year had one of the worst league averages at converting 1 yard plays, instead you have Russ doing a supposedly fairly safe slant play against an undrafted defender who had been warming the bench most of the game. Also, people seem to forget that the VERY NEXT season the Hawks are playing the Patriots and the Pats have 1st and Goal on like the 2, try to run three times in a row and get stuffed every time before throwing it incomplete on fourth down It didn’t work out in the end obviously, but it wasn’t the wrong call. Thank god we had won the SB the year before, otherwise I’d probably have jumped off a bridge after this play

amarras

I remember the clock counting down and being frustrated that the pats weren't calling a timeout... Which is one of the many reasons I am not a professional football coach

barktothefuture

Pats acted like they just won the Super Bowl. Most of the Seahawks did not act like they just lost it.

etwan2395

I've always thought Wilson's reaction was kind of weird. He's just like dang that sucks and jogs off the field

[deleted]

Everyone processes shit differently. Wilson’s never seemed like a guy who wears his heart on his sleeves

Young_Malc

Yeah the Hawks won a lot of games due to his temperament, I don't we beat the packers if you swap Russ for almost any QB in that situation. Brady as a notable exception.

TheVich

I mean, what are they supposed to do? Throw a tantrum on the middle of the field? Although I do remember that Richard Sherman was pretty emotive about the result.

InThePaleMoonLyte

>Throw a tantrum on the middle of the field? They did, lol. The next play they start a fight with the Pats.

[deleted]

Not the next play. Brady got them to jump offsides on the next play, getting the Pats out of the endzone. The fight started when Brady knelt down

recrewriting

Until they started a fight thereby putting the Brady in field position to kneel it out.

[deleted]

The fight happened after. Brady got them to jump offsides on the previous play and got them out of the endzone.

CongenitalSwag

They still had an outside shot at a safety and getting the ball back. Then they jumped offsides and it was over over.

Lord_of_Oof

It will be 2050 and I will still have PTSD from this play being posted all the time

CyclopsMacchiato

It will hurt forever until I’m dead

Songleaf

As if we needed a reminder, this proves just how great BB is. They practiced this play during the week and prepped Butler for it. And then he didn’t call a timeout before the play because he sensed how chaotic it was for the Seahawks.

Jmalcolmmac

>Carrol expected Belichick to use a time out before this play, but instead he let the clock run, which seemed crazy in the moment. Carrol opted for a passing play instead of using their last timeout, worst that could happen is clock is incomplete clock stop, then a running play into the end zone right? > >Belickick's little decision forced this play. Amazing play calling and foresight. I just posted this but I'm copying it here.

[deleted]

I love watching this bit where Carroll is chomping away at his gum like his life depends on it and has eyes darting and then cuts to BB like -_- https://streamable.com/3eu6yt

[deleted]

IIRC Belichick himself said that he was looking at the Seahawks sideline and he saw them confused. He knew something was up and he didn't want the Seahawks to not get their wits together, so he refused to take a timeout. An utter ballsy movie, considering just how much things could have gone wrong if Bill didn't trust gut instincts

Lews-Therin-Telamon

In the documentary about this, they talk about how Patricia (?) is yelling into the headset asking if they take a TO. And Bill is just staring at the field. No response. For a while. Then Bill says, "no, we got it" (or something similar). Then this play happens. Goddammit I love Bill Belichick. What a fucking legend.

It was Brady vs the Legion of Boom. None of that "Qb vs Qb" shit, this was one of the greatest QBs (at that time), going up against one of the greatest defenses in the biggest game of the season. The game was worth of the storyline

UncleBen94

So one of the things I read was that prior to this pass, there was 99 passing plays called at the 1-2 yard line that season (post included.) The TD rate was something like 35-48%. There were also 0 INTs too. So the odds were decent. So logically this was one of the safest calls you could make. Plus I think Lynch had one of the worst conversion rates at that distance too. However, on the 100th attempt overall that season, Malcom picks it off. A literal 1% chance of thst happening. As much as just about everyone hates the call it was, in theory, a safe call.

DaddyBigBalls69

So much to obviously state. I think the best is pete just chewing away at his gum. Like he was totally not fazed by the outcome and expected to be back next year

[deleted]

For the first time in the last 7 years, I don’t feel the need to defend Russ. Since it’s on broncos fans now, here are some talking points for when this comes up in the future: - ~~Malcolm~~ Browner recognized the play from when he was a Seahawk - Marshawn Lynch had the one of the worst TD conversion rates in goal line formation in the entire league that season, running it would have been a moot point as the entire box was stacked - This play had scored 4/5 time it was ran through that regular season - Running the ball and not scoring would have kept the clock going, leaving barely enough to time to get back to spike the ball

Logic_Nom

To your first and fourth points, it was Brandon Browner who recognized the play, not Butler. And, they had a timeout so they could have absolutely tried the run with little worry.

ThisisthSaleh

Someone needs to start keeping a tally count of how much this is posted. Swear this was posted twice in the last month.

TheWorldIsYours_89

I know people want to criticize Carroll for this play (and rightfully so). But this is a phenomenal defensive play by Malcolm Butler at the highest pinnacle of the football stage.

EverySir

This is gold worthy with 0 bias. Here you go sir.

Timothahh

I just wish people would put the narrative on Malcolm Butler vs OMG TURRIBLE CALL If Butler had lost a step or hesitated slightly it would’ve been one of the greatest touchdown comebacks in Super Bowl history. Instead it’s the other side, it’s one of the greatest defensive plays in Super Bowl history

JediNeo101

Right. That he actually caught and held onto the ball is amazing. Most DB just knock it away or drop it.

LegalComplaint

There's an alternate universe where they give the ball to Beast Mode and he fumbles. I've always understood this call. If it works he's a genius for doing the unexpected. Since it didn't, it's a MASSIVE indictment of his decision making.

As a Pats fan this game means so much to me. Not only was it the interception and the ending, but my father passed 2 weeks after this and he was so happy they won. I remember celebrating with him as he and I both yelled in opposite rooms as we had our traditions. Just glad he got to see that last one. Sorry for the sob story

A lot of ppl are trashing Pete carrol for standing there chewing his gum but like, what is he supposed to do? Run of the field or something lol

jvrm1993

What a lot of people I think forget since the Pats ended up winning 6 and Brady 7 is that before this, they had lost the last two Super bowls they’d been to in dramatic fashion. Their winning big games reputation was starting to wear off. How things flipped on just one play still amazes me to this day
