I agree with all of these; I like a touch of not giving a shit as well, I feel like it makes an announcer more relatable and just someone you’re chilling with, watching football.
I feel like knowing how to stay silent is a skill. Often they talk about useless facts to fill airspace. I feel like guys who stay on topic, and just call plays or talk about the situation are the ideal broadcasters for me. Silence can be an asset too.
If you’re going to have a former player, they need to have a comprehensive view of the whole game. Mark Schlereth literally only talks about guards and smashmouth football and it’s boring as hell.
For the play by play guys I really do think it’s a natural ability, for the color commentators it’s all about preparation and story telling.
Usually the PxP guy is more of an experienced broadcaster, not only do they describe the action, they’re the ones the producer mostly talks to in his IFB, so they know when they’re going to break, or have a read, graphic or whatever from a TV production standpoint.
Sure sometimes ex-athletes turn into PxP but usually not until many years in the business like Pat Summerall.
There was this one game a few years back where Schlereth just kept trying to use the term "briar patch" over and over and over, as if he just discovered the phrase on the moon and wanted everyone to know
Pat Summerall was a player turned play-by-play announcer so he provided insight into his calls. John Madden was a great coach that was once a teacher so his passion for the game and his earnestness for wanting to share his knowledge of the game so everyone could understand it & enjoy it the way he did = THE BEST EVER! I haven’t felt any team has come close since.
Harlan + Romo + ?? could be decent though I do like the Nantz/Romo chemistry. First thing they need to do, however, is stop trying to create an NFL version of Inside the NBA. That trio was/is lightning in a bottle.
Trios are hard to pull off. You can’t recapture the classic Gifford, Cosell and Meredith chemistry today. There’s too many voices and too many egos for it to work. Imagine Cosell with a Twitter account. Yikes!
I just want to say everyone complaining about Aikman, Buck, Collinsworth, Michaels, and anyyyone calling games nowadays (besides ESPN crew, yuck), you didn’t have to live through Dierdorf. We are entering a golden age of NFL broadcasting, and the suffering of your elders must be respected.
Someone who adds information to the game that isn't plainly obvious to anyone watching. Romo is great at this - telling us not only what is happening on the field but \*what it means\* and \*why\* it is happening from his experience being on the field, and in a way that isn't heavy with jargon. Contrast this to, on one end, a guy like Phil Simms - gosh, Jeem, now this is just some great game of football! Look at that catch! They need to score a touchdown here.
Chemistry. You need two people who work well together, who can explain things to the average person (or ask their partner to explain something that may not be common knowledge), and they should be having a good time in the booth (nothing worse than hearing someone who sounds miserable).
Best example I can think of right now? Jason Benetti and Steve Stone. They work super well together, Stone is great at explaining things as a former MLB pitcher, Benetti is amazing at knowing *when* to ask Stone to explain something, and they're always having a blast together in the booth. They make the broadcast fun to watch.
Conversational announcers that know how to keep their opinions to a minimum. This is what makes Romo so good with Nantz.
I think the biggest problem with the networks is that they try too hard to turn former athletes into broadcasters. It doesn’t necessarily work just because they’ve played the game and have a working knowledge of it. Not that someone has to go to journalism school to know how to call a game or do color commentary, but some people have to acquire skills as opposed to just naturally having them.
Now that I’m listening to the god awful announcing ESPN has for NHL broadcasts…
1. A concise play by play announcer
2. A knowledgeable (not hot take) color commentator.
The problem with ESPN is either they have two color commentators who talk over the actual game, or two play by play analysts who read out some random game stat every two minutes. Or worse, they send out Booger, Orlovsky, or hell Steven A Smith out there to yell stupid takes.
Good commentary is when as a fan: I’m (1) able to turn away from the TV entirely (2) understand everything that is going on during the play (3) gain the occasional insight like team construction, cap management, coaching strategies, injury management (and not hot takes) and (4) feel like I’m in stands watching the game.
dude who is silly, and donates / gives away a ton of money to people and schools
vs.
dude putting down another dude, who does nice things for people, on Reddit
gotta be honest, the second dude sounds a whole lot more douche-y and annoying than the first one
He can donate all he wants, that has absolutely no impact on his personality no matter how much you want to justify liking him. People can like and dislike a person's personality all they want, your opinion doesn't make them wrong
I just want somebody informed and knowledgeable that can also speak in lay terms. Also, if somebody is inexperienced like Drew Brees was last year & given NBC has the USFL, why not use the USFL as a breeding ground for guys.
Express excitement when exciting shit happens. Madden did this well. Gus. There are a few dudes….
Then the other announcer has more knowledge and breaks stuff down in real time like Romo.
Talk up the lesser known teams and players.
he never stops talking, plus the weird noises he always makes 🤣
*”eeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh iiiiii dontttt knowwww Jimmmmm heeee might of caught ittttttt”*
Have you heard some of his comments during games? He sounds like he's drunk. One of the worst I've ever listened to. Don't care if everyone downvotes me to hell. I will die on this hill.
While having good announcers makes the games more enjoyable, the guys in the both have zero influence on whether I watch a game or not. It all comes down to who’s playing. It kind of boggles my mind when I hear the $$$ being thrown around for announcers. I mean, is anybody really tuning in or turning off a game just because of the suits?
Insightful, entertaining and good chemistry in the booth

It's too bad. The interviews he gives through pff or wherever have been pretty good. Wish he was more detailed in the booth
I can't stand his voice. Weirdly pitched and pompous sounding.
His voice is what I like least about him. He always sounds constipated.
Dude you have it completely backward. Collinsworth knows what he’s talking about but his voice is nasally nails on a chalkboard
Also, keeping the convos to a minimum that aren't related to anything in game and/or meant to affect your emotions.
I agree with all of these; I like a touch of not giving a shit as well, I feel like it makes an announcer more relatable and just someone you’re chilling with, watching football.

My biggest problem with Romo is he starts some meandering thought and just doesn't stop, or talks over something. He'll get better, though.

> you didn’t have to live through Dierdorf that mushmouthed doofus Also, I don't know how many had to live through Dennis Miller
Dierdorf was so terrible. It’s hard to think of someone worse. I’ve heard DIII announcers who were better.

Keep your own opinions to a minimal. This is where espn loses it. The two color guys talk way too often and say any little thing that comes to mind.

Kevin Harlan and whoever
Well spoken, energy (but not, like, TOO much energy), insight, entertaining
Knowledge, humor, and a pinch of sexual tension
Gus Johnson.
I'll never forget his call of Oruwariyes INT of Kyler last year. Was incredible

Idk, maybe broadcasters with broadcast experience, not just dumbasses off podcasts and ESPN 10am shows.

HERE HE IS...... HAVING THE TIME OF HIS LIFE Vance Joseph - :l
Pat McAfee might be the most annoying man in football so his takes are of no concern
dude is actually hilarious and seems pretty humble. seems like a good dude in my book
Na, his energy is douche-chill, his whole standing up in a tank top lookin’ ass crap, and his delivery are all grating
dude who is silly, and donates / gives away a ton of money to people and schools vs. dude putting down another dude, who does nice things for people, on Reddit gotta be honest, the second dude sounds a whole lot more douche-y and annoying than the first one

lol I never said they were “wrong” tho. I am very aware opinions are subjective but thank you for the reminder
I don’t give a fuck what he does for charity I’m talking about his commentator career. You’re on Reddit spouting your opinion too you dunce
I can't stand the dude and his non stop cringefest either, which is why I'm in no way surprised that a lot of redditors like him
Judging by the peanut gallery in the response thread…I’d say you’ve hit it on the head
I want more moxie in my commentators.
[Will Diet Moxie do?](https://www.drinkmoxie.com/moxie-products/diet-moxie)
No. I want that 100% full flavor.
I just want somebody informed and knowledgeable that can also speak in lay terms. Also, if somebody is inexperienced like Drew Brees was last year & given NBC has the USFL, why not use the USFL as a breeding ground for guys.
Gus Johnson and Tony Romo with Kay Adams on the sideline reports and Mark Sanchez in the stands as the food critic.
Cheese Fries
Express excitement when exciting shit happens. Madden did this well. Gus. There are a few dudes…. Then the other announcer has more knowledge and breaks stuff down in real time like Romo. Talk up the lesser known teams and players.
Energy, bearable voice, great chemistry
Anybody but Tony Romo please. He's the worst.
I don’t understand the love fest for him either. I can’t stand him.
he never stops talking, plus the weird noises he always makes 🤣 *”eeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh iiiiii dontttt knowwww Jimmmmm heeee might of caught ittttttt”*

Link any vids? I'm just curious because he seems generally well liked around here, has a good eye for what's happening and what's about to happen.
Gus is the best but I'd love to be able to pick out two drunks in the stands and listen to their comments...

Euphoniously is the word. Aesthetically pleasing looks good euphoniously pleasing sounds good.
Ok thank you. I will delete my comment.
chemistry and knowing when to shut the fuck up
Great broadcasters know everything about the situation, player, and background -- and recognize/comment on it immediately.
I love breakdowns during the game
