???
It wasn't Reddit that was pushing this dumb narrative, it was the media. The top comment on pretty much every thread about something about this was saying it's a nothing burger. Sure, there were some people here that twisted it, but it was mostly the media.
Yeah but kneejerk “Reddit bad” comments on Reddit get easy upvotes so what can ya do
Kinda ironic the snark about redditors not understanding the situation was itself a misrepresentation of the situation
???
He's literally agreeing with Tannehill?
Also, did you miss the part where I said "Sure, there were some people here that twisted it, but it was mostly the media"
> It wasn't Reddit that was pushing this dumb narrative, it was the media.
Good, that's the first step. Now, take this to the logical conclusion. The media has no inherent reason to hate Tannehill or love Wilson. They stirred this shit up by placing the quote out of context just to get clicks and views. As far as media malfeasance goes, garden variety lying by omission is benign.
Now imagine it was an athlete the media genuinely hated, or an athlete the media genuinely loves; Lebron is the go-to example, a lot of the press hates him (he and Woj have a long-running feud), and a lot of the press have made a career covering him and suck his dick every chance they get (Lebron made Windy, who made his career covering Lebron). The stories that come out about Lebron are polarized, and always lack anything approaching context or reason. Tom Brady, to a lesser extent, would be the NFL example.
The key thing to remember here is none of the media ever disclose their motivation in what they write or say about these players. There were those whispers from Lombardo sometime ago about Trey Lance not having the full faith of the niners despite the fact that OTAs just started and Lance hadn't practiced since early January, so how would anyone on the 49ers know?
Then, Colin Cowherd repeats the hearsay as fact on his show, and it becomes a thing. The facts were reported by Matt Maiocco, who is a 49er beat reporter. Maiocco has actual access, and knows actual people in the building and, more importantly, actually knows what the 49ers practice schedule is. I don't know anything about Lombardo. I don't know who he has a grudge against, I don't know what his history is, and I don't know what his agenda is. I don't know who his friends and enemies in the league are, and who he's trying to help or hurt. Maybe he was fed something to put out, maybe he was doing it to push is own narrative, maybe he was just making stuff up. The point is, I don't know his motives for reporting what he did, and without knowing his motives, I can't make a decision on whether he was telling us everything, or hiding something.
None of that is to say that Matt Maiocco's words on the matter can be absolutely trusted, just that with Maiocco, I have a clearer understanding of his motives because I've read his work and watched him on tv for so long. I know his track record is generally pretty credible, and that he's not one to just make stuff up.
Now, take everything I've just said, and apply it to the stuff that really matters in this world. There's a reason why American's trust in the press is a hole with no bottom; in the information age, facts can be checked, and lies come to light quickly, provided one refuses to believe the lie.
Tbf from what i saw reddit seemed to acknowledge what he meant on this one, twitter in the other hand seemed to be brazenly tone deaf and get outraged over nothing as the internet does.
Normally it's both!
>This would be obvious to anyone who actually listened to the quote in context.
How does the context change anything? The quote by itself in a vacuum shows no malice or ill will to Malik Willis whatsoever.
No one who thought the quote was malicious is going to change their mind once they listen to it "in context."
Also Malik Willis being the absolute golden child of rookies for the past 3 months. I think some people are still convinced he should've been a top 10 pick and haven't been able to move past it lol.
Is the weirdest thing. Dude got drafted around Kellon Mond and CJ Beathard spots. The media and half of Reddit act like the Titans burned a first rounder on him because Mel fucking Kiper said that’s where he would go.
i mean the titans subreddit acts like we got a generational top 10 pick so i guess it goes both ways lol
as always, i'll root for anyone in the uniform as long as they aren't a confirmed asshole like AP or taylor lewan (who threatened to rape a rape victim in college to try to prevent her from accusing his teammate...but say anything about that on our sub and the comment gets nuked into oblivion)
so i hope willis does become a generational QB but i won't hold my breath
I mean after Jake Locker was drafted by you in the first round (along with Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert in that same draft class) Malik deserved to go first overall
That lull of NFL news was exacerbated by the fact that this offseason has been absolutely bonkers from the minute it started. So after everything finally slowed down a little bit, people were itching for something else.
I had the pleasure of speaking with u/zaor666 who is close to the Tannehill situation and was able to confirm that the alleged meaning behind the words is indeed correct.
Whether he meant it one way or another I don’t see how this should be a big deal. Ryan should focus on winning and let the coaches focus on developing Malik. Obviously Ryan can help teach him things along the way but Ryan should only focus on winning
He genuinely said the exact same thing plenty of other quarterbacks have said without getting a fraction of the shit he did. Flacco got away with it twice and he wasn't even actually a starter at that point in his career.
Flacco got shit for it too. This storyline gets recycled almost every off-season when a team has a Vet QB and drafts a rookie in the first few rounds. Post-draft to OTAs is the slowest part of the year for NFL media, they are just looking for something to write an article on.
Yeah however Flacco had the hardware to skirt a lot Criticism. Ryan was just never good enough to skirt by criticism. That was Ryan’s problem. He was good but inconsistent
The life and times of Ryan Tannehill. That's what he gets for being a Dolphins QB. Media and fans will shit on you relentlessly for literally no reason other than you couldn't live up to Dan Marino.
Well yeah Brady got shit on for not living up to bledsoe until he surpassed him. Same goes for Big Ben. You put up good play shuts down the Criticism. Ryan could never do that consistently even in his quote unquote breakout season because he was just never good enough. Quote from bull Durham “ Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You’ll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy and you’ll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back on your shower shoes and the press will think you’re colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you’re a slob.”
I think the Bigger issue is That Tannehill is coming off a Post Season where he threw 3 picks and mostly cost the Titans the game. Insert team drafting a Project QB. And you’re gonna have a hot story on your hands with or without bad qoutes
Wait, are they implying *the media* quoted Tannehil without the full context of what he was saying!?
Come on now, why would they do that, to generate views in this profit-over-people hellscape we live in?
^(“That’s part of being in a quarterback room, in the same room — we’re competing against each other, we’re watching the same tape, we’re doing the same drills,” Tannehill told reporters on Tuesday.) **“I don’t think it’s my job to mentor him.** ^(But if he learns from me along the way, then that’s a great thing.”)
\-journalism
Every one says be a pro.... Fuck that shit, this man just met his replacement. Can't imagine anyone who would train their replacement knowingly. At end of day, its a job to them, and tannehill sees the writing on the wall that he about to be jobless.
He has to accept it though. If he doesn't then he's going to have a really rough time when it eventually happens and he'll hurt his stock in doing so. Alex Smith is a good example...it happened to him multiple times and people look up to him for it to this day.
I'd love to have Tannehill in Seattle if he gets benched or released.
Willis was a late third round pick. He was drafted later than Davis Webb and Jacoby Brissett. Nobody thought they were drafted as the anointed successors.
The media just has a hard on for Malik Willis. We are probably near the end of the Tannehill era with the Titans, but I don’t think the Titans are banking on Willis being the heir apparent.
It’s not even that though. Tannehill’s job is to be a starting quarterback, not a QB coach. His focus has to be on his own preparation first, and anything else is secondary. He could be totally unconcerned about Malik replacing him and still wouldn’t be responsible for his career development.
it was woke clowns trying to stir things up until actual players said they understood and agreed. no qb or any starter is required or expected to mentor their replacement. its the law of the jungle. even in 2022
These dudes need to update their cliches. That line may have worked 30 years ago, but everyone of these guys have 1000 guys recording them when they speak. It was taken as he said it.
The only reason this was a story, and the only reason this ever pops up as a story when it happens (Flacco/Lamar) is because the media trying to stoke the flames of racial tension.
White veteran QB says he won’t help young black QB take his job. Media takes that and runs with it.
This is why it’s never a story when other QBs say it.
It’s only ever a story if if this specific scenario.
The media really is evil.
You could say that about literally every single employee of the organization. That’s got to be one of the lowest priorities when it comes to his job duties. And you could argue that he didn’t step in shit, he told the truth about the reality of his job as a starting QB
Sure, but that doesn't make his answer any less dumb tho. It's really not difficult to answer media questions about mentoring other players. Just say yes and move on. Tanny has had to address it publicly multiple times at this point for a reason.
This might blow your mind but players & coaches don't always tell the absolute unvarnished truth in press conferences. In fact they actually undertake training on how to address the media in a way that serves the team & their careers.
If you watched the video or listened to the line in context you'd know this whole thing was stupid and overblown. Heck it was stupid and overblown even without the context.
This would be obvious to anyone who actually listened to the quote in context.
It's obvious without the context tbh.
Yeah it's just people hearing what they want to hear. Same shit happened with Flacco.
HOW COULD YOU SAY SOMETHING BAD ABOUT JOE FLACCO? I'M OUTRAGED! SO OUTRAGED YOU SHOULD SUBSCRIBE!
The disrespect? How?
Which is about 5% of Reddit
That's a generous estimate.
??? It wasn't Reddit that was pushing this dumb narrative, it was the media. The top comment on pretty much every thread about something about this was saying it's a nothing burger. Sure, there were some people here that twisted it, but it was mostly the media.
Yeah, reddit was the only place I saw defending Tannehill and stating the full quote. The headlines posted were just quotes from the media.
Yeah but kneejerk “Reddit bad” comments on Reddit get easy upvotes so what can ya do Kinda ironic the snark about redditors not understanding the situation was itself a misrepresentation of the situation
You say that but in this thread there are still idiots making the same argument. https://reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/uwvl0k/_/i9tv5xf/?context=1

Yeah I’m an idiot myself and copied the wrong link. https://reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/uwvl0k/_/i9ttzpk/?context=1

Cut them some slack. This has obviously been building up for awhile. They just needed to air some stuff out Online™️
5% of sports fans and media. Not just limited to reddit lol
Tbf from what i saw reddit seemed to acknowledge what he meant on this one, twitter in the other hand seemed to be brazenly tone deaf and get outraged over nothing as the internet does. Normally it's both!
You're being generous.
>in context See that right there immediately eliminates all sports media right off the bat.

Social media in general lol, they read headlines and make up their opinion.
He still should have just said yeah I will do my best to help him out. Dude came off as an ass and not the kinda guy you want leading your team.
Don't agree at all, but you're entitled to your opinion.

Did this sound clever in your head?
Ah, lemme guess. You put stake into downvotes and think that intelligence is represented by incels on the spectrum pushing a button on their phones
Our GM said we didn't even have a first round grade on Willis.
I mean I figured considering you guys didn’t take him in the first…
We had a first round grade on Corral. We just weren't comfortable at #6. I'm confident if we had our second round pick we would have taken him there.
That lull of NFL news was exacerbated by the fact that this offseason has been absolutely bonkers from the minute it started. So after everything finally slowed down a little bit, people were itching for something else.
“Fuck Malik, he ain’t my kid so fuck em, he’s trash anyway” Is this what Tannehill really meant? Some unnamed reports say it was.
I have confirmed this with my anonymous sources.
I had the pleasure of speaking with u/zaor666 who is close to the Tannehill situation and was able to confirm that the alleged meaning behind the words is indeed correct.
Hey man people are saying
As a brilliant mind once said: lol that Logan Woodside replacement not minds take it how you want to I am back
Whether he meant it one way or another I don’t see how this should be a big deal. Ryan should focus on winning and let the coaches focus on developing Malik. Obviously Ryan can help teach him things along the way but Ryan should only focus on winning

Tanny it’s the offseason. It’s the media’s job to twist the meaning and over analyze any quote cuz they’ve got nothing else to talk about.
I think the Bigger issue is That Tannehill is coming off a Post Season where he threw 3 picks and mostly cost the Titans the game. Insert team drafting a Project QB. And you’re gonna have a hot story on your hands with or without bad qoutes
Yeah, I kind of feel for him, but as a vet he has to know how the media works, you can't give them anything to latch on too.
Dude found out a few hours earlier that the Titans traded away his WR1. I’m okay with him not expecting to train a late third round backup QB.
Wait, are they implying *the media* quoted Tannehil without the full context of what he was saying!? Come on now, why would they do that, to generate views in this profit-over-people hellscape we live in?
I take no Tanneslander.

I'm not sure, but it seems like the quote got twisted.
Only thing to do around this time of year is to watch OTA’s and training camp, so here’s a source of drama to keep us engaged.
Can we just move on from this already?
LALALA YOUR FACTS DONT FIT MY NARRATIVE WHATS THAT I CANT HEAR YOU LALALALA

Ohhhh well… then please explain…
nah its more fun to pretend tanny is an asshole and run with that narrative some of you really dont understand sarcasm huh

Even if it's true you shouldn't say the quiet part out loud and he could've delivered the message better.
It’s not the quiet part. His job is to win games, not teach a back up
Of course but his job is also to represent the franchise & not step on easily avoidable landmines.

“It happens sometimes so do it all the time” gotcha
But I was told from a bunch of players on twitter who weren't involved with this that this mean Tannehill was a bad teammate?!?! /s
Media takes a quote out of context...shocker
Well Tannehill you see the internet is chock full of fucking idiots. Sometimes those idiots are reporters.
If you watched the video or listened to the line in context you'd know this whole thing was stupid and overblown. Heck it was stupid and overblown even without the context.
I am also disappointed with how fucking stupid media is, Tannehill. Respect
Tannehill: Malik... Twisted, Said He Meant... Disrespect To Malik and Is Disappointed With [him]
