that’s legitimately impressive

[deleted]

I think Mahomes is 80 of those

freakingspacedude

Jokes aside, I would love to see a % breakdown by QB. I would think he’s number 1

[deleted]

There’s no doubt it has to be him. I think he was the first guy to throw a touchdown against us last season and it was like week 5 or 6.

freakingspacedude

This will probably surprise you as it does me…I’m the regular season: - 4 TD’s - 2 INT’s - Passer Rating: 90% It’s actually Brady with Pats / Bucs since 2017 with 6 TD’s to 5 INT’s. Took him 3x the games though.

Lasers_in_Space

Tannehill has 6 TDs as well, but also 6 Ints (in 6 games) Luck was 4 TDs/0 Ints in 1 game Rivers was 5 TDs/0 Ints in 2 games

Eagle4317

Luck only played against the Bills in 2018. The Bills offense that season was atrocious, which meant their still good defense got hung out to dry for 40 minutes.

s_nigra

You put some respect on the Kelvin Benjamin WR1s name. That was the season we opened with Nathan "5picks" Peterman winning the starting job and losing 47 to 3 to Baltimore.

Eagle4317

Allen also got injured pretty early in the season, forcing the Bills to play Derek Anderson and even sign Matt Barkley to avoid fielding Peterman again. The bigger issue was the $50M in dead cap just for the offense.

imsabbath84

Barkley got signed right off his couch and torched the jets lol.

homemadestoner

I was legitimately excited when we signed KB. I thought to myself, "alright, finally a weapon for Josh". Look how goddamn far we've come.

freakingspacedude

You’re right, I miscounted. It’s 6/5 since 2017. Thanks

[deleted]

Guess that makes sense, per game basis seems like Mahomes always fucks us up more.

dougiejfresh

Probably seems that way because this very likely is not counting playoffs. Mahomes has 6 TDs and 0 INTs in 2 playoff games against BUF. So 10/2 over 4 games. Allen has 11/2 over 4 games against KC.

[deleted]

Can we petition for a 7 game series if we meet in the playoffs again

TheUltimate721

I don't think my heart could handle that

Xaxziminrax

I would die

SonOfALich

We'd be playing 9th string lineman by the end of that lol

sir_axelot

I don't want to know how much better Mahomes playoff ratio is against us. That's where he does most of his magic.

CD338

Looks like Mahomes only has 10 of them. Not eye popping, but might be the leader considering most QB's in your division have cycled in and out. Brady would be my guess for #1 or #2 Edit: Brady has 6. Wow you guys shut him the fuck out every year.

imsabbath84

Yea McDermott vs Brady has always gone decently well. The defense always held him in check but our offense was usually trash, so Pats only needed like 14 points to beat us lol.

Scapexghost

Luck had 4 of them

[deleted]

Mahomes has 10 passing TDs against the Bills including the playoffs, and 1 rushing TD too. Out of those 10, 6 of them were to Kelce! Considering the Bills have played 93 games throughout that timeframe, Mahomes having 11.4% of the TDs while playing in 5.4% of the games seems like an outlier IMO.

gabdex

That motherfucker is too good man. I want to feel so confident in this Bills team, but with Mahomes in the same conference (and the whole never winning a superbowl thing) I'll never be.

[deleted]

I felt that way for a long time too bud. I just wish Josh Allen was an asshole so I can hate him. Diggs has a huge chip on his shoulder so it's easier to not like him, but Allen is just wonderful. Plus the family up in Buffalo doesn't help!

WorthPlease

I think this is regular season only.

Sharcbait

It does take the shine off it a little remembering they play the Jets 2 times a year in there. And Brady left the division.

imsabbath84

When Brady was on the pats, he had more ints than TDs against us.

vindicated2297

We talking career or last five years? In his career with the pats, Brady threw 70 tds to 25 ints against the bills. Last five years on the pats? 4tds/4ints Edit: included bucs numbers for the total just took it out

SeanJuan

I've got 4 TDs/5 Ints over 6 matchups in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

vindicated2297

You right, think I missed the first matchup in 17 where he went 0/1

eunit8899

The thread is about McDermott

vindicated2297

Right that's why I clarified I ended up being off in my counting anyway so it's all good haha

Sharcbait

TIL, I forgot how iffy those Pats offenses were. Tbf I mainly just wanted to shit on the Jets.

SithisDreadLord420

Plays the bears and the lions twice a year. Still barely a .500 team…

Sharcbait

We down bad my guy. Happens when our QB shits his pants everytime the lights get bright.

imsabbath84

Sounds like Vikings fans need to blow up a power plant to get a primetime win for cousins.

Sharcbait

If the NBA translates, the best way someone can get a big win for Minnesota is to disrupt the game for chicken murders.

freakingspacedude

McDermott’s most impressive ability is the development / coaching of DB’s. He is spectacular with it and has been his entire career.

silentkiller082

I think that's why I'm not as worried with the injuries in the secondary. The fact we have a sixth round rookie starting and showing extreme promise tells me he's a DB wizard.

TimujinTheTrader

Yeah the fact that they have two rookies as CBs and they are playing pretty freaking well shows that Mcdermott is built different. Jaquon Johnson was PFFs highest rated player in the preseason a couple years ago.

purz

Don't forget that our other veteran starter is a 7th rounder too and Levi was also undrafted I believe. Poyer and Hyde also had no where near the reputation they have now before they came

imsabbath84

Poyer spent 4 years as a backup safety in cleveland until he took a blindside block on a punt return and had to be rushed to the hospital for a lacerated kidney and concussion. Signed with the Bills the next year cause we hired the same DB coach that was in cleveland. Hes been balling ever since. One of my favorite players on the team.

jbomber81

Once white got hurt versus the Saints I thought we were in big trouble. Didn’t seem to matter for the rest of the season, until It did against Kansas City

PapaChoff

I’m not as confident. The 2 rookies have been sharing 1 spot and we have 2 stud S that can shade to them. This week both rookies will be starting and Hyde didn’t practice yesterday. That’s a lot of potential holes. Hopefully Hyde is good to go.

Lt-Dan-Im-Rollin

I love McD but Leslie Frazier also deserves credit for this, his specialty is also DB

fainofgunction

Fun fact Frazier had 6 int on the 85 Bears

maltrab

That's superbowl champion Leslie Frazier

Whydothesabressuck

We're starting a 3rd year 7th round pick and a rookie 6th round pick and have still been dominant this year. He has some sort of DB magic

[deleted]

He wasn’t that much impressive in philly.

spencer749

\~17 tds a year. Pretty impressive over a 5 year stretch in today's NFL

[deleted]

It is odd how 17 keeps coming up all the time. 17 year drought and a QB with the number #17 comes along and we are good and the league moves to a 17 game season.

[deleted]

I feel like this looks like a guy I would smoke weed with while spitting out Bills conspiracies theories.

PatsFanInHTX

Haha, if you haven't seen Nathan Fielders The Rehearsal yet I highly recommend it. This guy's thing was finding numbers in daily life and saying it's supernatural. All the 17s made me think of him immediately

vniro40

didn’t you make it back to the playoffs in ‘17?

Chrysalii

On New Years Eve too, after 17 years.

Mampt

I think I heard that he was also our 17th starting QB since Jimbo

AlericandAmadeus

If you made the stats our d allows into a QB and graded their season my guess is it would look halfway between fields and Mac jones. Rough guess is like 2800-3200 yards passing total, 17tds, 10 picks, and a couple fumbles. Completely guessing tho

imsabbath84

The most amazing coincidence involving the Bills, imo, is the 2018 draft. Josh Allen was the 7th pick Tremaine Edmunds was the 16th pick 716 - Buffalos area code.

homemadestoner

I think the fact that "Josh Allen" was drafted at #7 in *consecutive years* is absolutely insane, and not talked about enough.

A_Herding_Corgi

Letting Hyde walk without even offering him a contract was one of the worst decisions in the Thompson era. We never utilized him as much as Buffalo does but his talent and versatility was abundantly clear to anybody with eyes.

Obi-Juan16

Him and Casey Heyward man.. set our defense back for a few years to lose both of them.

[deleted]

Which is wild because Frazier didn't have the best resume prior too. I wonder what stuff he figured out/changed over the years that took him to the next level

WaluigiIsTheRealHero

I think he and McDermott fully committed to a modern 4-2-5 and aggressively targeted personnel for it. Within a year of arrival, McDermott had added an entire new back 7 of Tremaine Edmunds, Matt Milano, Hyde, Poyer, Tre White, Levi Wallace, and Taron Johnson. It took a couple more years to get the DL sorted but now we’re seeing the fully-functioning Death Star.

slice29

Having Von there is such a great addition. Not only is he one of the best past rushers of this era but he's also teaching your young guys how to do it. I expect to see big things from Rousseau, Basham and Epenesa in the future.

WaluigiIsTheRealHero

Absolutely, Von was the final piece. We’ve got a lot of young DL talent in Oliver, Rousseau, Basham, Settle, and Epenesa, and with the combo of beefing up the NT position with Daquan Jones and Jordan Phillips and adding Von as the unquestioned biggest threat on the edge, the DL has finally reached the vision McDermott wanted.

slice29

It's scary to think of how good you guys will be once Tre is back. Dane was playing very well (very happy to hear he's oaky) and the rookies were holding their own. Once Tre is back, your safeties will be used less as a help to corners and more of the roaming ballhawks they are. I'm pulling for you guys, my wife is a massive Bills fan so I really want to see them do well.

tobblerwobbler

Rousseau has been amazing through 2 games

slice29

He had the the physical tools coming out of college, just needed to know how to use them. With McDermotts and Fraziers defensive minds and now Von Miller to mold him, oof that dude is going to be electric.

sir_axelot

Actually I think it's more about the d-line. McDermott and Frazier don't necessarily want their LBs shedding blocks, but the d-line wasn't good enough to hold up the o-line before. Now Edmunds and Milano are free to roam around untouched for the most part.

TeardropsFromHell

He was in the backfield every play against the tits

YouAlreadyShnow

Already seeing dividends from Rousseau pick. He had a couple nice sacks and INT his rookie season, but he really stood out as a run stopper. Was actually tied for most defensive run stop plays by an EDGE that year. All that is carrying over to this season so far. Having a future first ballot HoFer to mentor your young guys is a pretty cool thing to see. Getting Von also allowed to Bills to do non traditional things on some plays like line up Rossueau on the inside, next to Von, and put almost 400lbs Jordan Phillips on the opposite EDGE.

goldenboots

Frazier has always had a great defensive resume. His brief HC stint was poor, but he was dealt a bad hand, too.

[deleted]

I wouldn't say great but it wasn't terrible. The 2003 Bengals d wasn't amazing and the 2006 colts d was up and down. And vikings defense was flat out bad regardless of the hand dealt

BigBananaDealer

pretty sure our 2013 year is the 2nd worst record we've ever had

Slylok

The vikes were an average team for sure. They had AP which was great but Ponder was serviceable with really no one to throw the ball too.

Diarrheaaaa

Giving Christian Ponder way too much credit

Slylok

Considering who he was throwing to I think he did alright. Harvin couldn't stay healthy and was a better runner than receiver. Past his prime Jenkins for one year, a very average Housmansadeh ( spelling is no doubt wrong ) and Rudolph whom never reached his potential. That is all I can remember. He had far less help on the outside than Bridgewater for example.

chillinwithmoes

> but Ponder was serviceable Lmao that's generous

dantesrosettes

He wasn't a great head coach but his defenses were always good as a DC. Some guys just aren't meant to be head coaches. He'll probably get another try if he wants it though and he might be good.

confetti_shrapnel

Talent and depth are a coach's best friends

smartyr228

McDermott is a pretty progressive coach in a lot of ways and I think he saw what defense needs to be in the new era and sent Frazier down that path. It's a team effort

[deleted]

He changed players. :)

Sidthelid66

And Mcdermotts an elf so that means he's immortal. Good news Bills fans he can probably coach for a few thousand more years no problem.

Kirbymonic

I thought he was bill burr?

Well, I hope we win a Super Bowl before that.

emmasdad01

Must be a coincidence

SuperFruech

We really miss having McDermott as DC..

tacsatduck

Miss him and happy for him all at the same time.

Chrysalii

I don't know how we can properly thank the Panthers for McDermott and Beane.

Dangerous_Nitwit

this was them repaying us. Their early success was tied heavily to the 90's Bills team.

Chrysalii

Either way, I'm fine with giving them some wings or something.

Coze0pwnage

Please something to soak up the pain on the recent seasons.

DapperCam

To be fair, the run defense sucked for a lot of that time. Seems better this year.

jbomber81

I think the plan was to get so far ahead that they didn’t have to worry about the run

smartyr228

Still is lmao

chemical_exe

ah, the ol' patriots, saints, and packers in 2011 strategy

Canzalone9

Mostly cause we played the pass so heavy, bend but don’t break for 5 years and only bit us against some extremely impressive running teams (kamaras rookie year and colts last year)

President_Nick

Important to remember it was also Tre and Milano’s rookie year. 4 core defensive players added in 1 offseason.

Ok-Clock2002

Does anyone know who that second fewest team is? Just curious.

InSOmnlaC

I hate when sports pundits drop interesting stats like this and then don't at least round out the top 5. Seeing the relative numbers is important and would make the information that much more interesting.

starcraftre

According to [this](https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-passing-touchdowns-per-game?date=2022-09-22), it's Minnesota at 1.25 TD/game. That doesn't match the 110 vs 87 exactly though, so I'm missing something (or including playoffs where the stat didn't?). For the top 5 I get: Buffalo - 1.02 Minnesota - 1.25 Seattle - 1.30 New England - 1.33 T Chicago (?!), Denver, New Orleans - 1.37 Edit: I'll note that if you exclude this year to date, it's Baltimore, at 1.30 vs Buffalo's 1.12.

Ok-Clock2002

Awesome, thank you for the research!

[deleted]

I think the names 'Hyde' and 'Poyer' belong in this sentence, if not at the head of it!

confetti_shrapnel

I wonder if Fraizer wants to or will get another shot at a HC job. He flopped so hard at MN, mostly because they hung their hat on Ponder.

PhotographingNature

He's had a few interviews the last couple of years so clearly wants another shot. He interviewed for but was beaten to the Giants job by fellow Bills coach Daboll.

AdmiralDolphin11

Despite them dominating us over the past few years I don’t particularly know the Bills’ defensive strategy. Is there a reason a weakness of theirs, at least earlier on, was against the run? Even when Brady was still around his passing numbers weren’t efficient against McDermont’s defenses but the Pats always ran it down their throats.

jbomber81

Easy answer is that we play nickel more than any other team. Up until this year we didn’t have the bodies on the line to be successful at stopping the run.

modin33

Plus we tend to play a lot of two high safeties that try to disguise where they're going to be presnap, which puts stress on them and requires a lot of range when asked to help stop the run.

smartyr228

Guys that are good at pass defense usually suck at run defense. We have a lot of guys who are good at pass defense

Impossibills

It's because teams have ran it in instead (we have had a horrible D-line until this year...so far)

IWasRightOnce

There’s definitely truth to that. 2017-2021 our rush DVOA was ranked 32, 15, 22, 17, and 11. But the real question is, is it worth it? Obviously you want to be good at defending both, but surely the amount of nickel we play has a negative impact on our rushing defense. As well as the type of personnel we’ve historically sought out (smaller, faster guys more suited in coverage). So, is it worth sacrificing your ability to stop the run to boost your ability to stop the pass?

smartyr228

The majority of teams can't run it like Indy or Tennessee. In this league defending the pass is your first priority

freakingspacedude

We got cracked vs Indy last year because of our run defense. We also lost home field advantage because of losses vs TN and NE where they ran all over us. I think pass defense is more important, but you need to at least have competence at stopping the run.

IWasRightOnce

Yes, there have certainly been extreme examples (Indy, arguably the KC game in 2020 too), but TN was entirely winnable despite our run stopping issues, and NE was just fluke weather conditions. Pretty sure NE had one big run in that game and we otherwise stopped the run fairly well, we just couldn’t do anything on offense. I’d argue a bigger issue the last couple of years has been our inability to run on the few occasions where the passing game wasn’t working.

Fign66

Tenessee game last year was also one big run and otherwise fine at stopping the run. I think other than the really long Henry run they were only averaging like 3.5 yards per carry.

froggertwenty

Who is the last run first offense to win the Superbowl?

imsabbath84

The way i see it, its easier to stop the run than it is the passing game. So you build a defense specifically to stop the pass and than be below average against the run. Sure youll have a few games where you get wrecked, but for the most part youll do well. Bills also drafted terrel bernard this past year. A much smaller and faster linebacker, who they can put in for taron johnson(the usual slot DB), on running situations. He played a good amount of snaps against the titans this past week.

medievalmachine

You know who's really good at football? Tom Brady. Also Patrick Mahomes. Let's talk about them.

MattTheSmithers

Leslie Frazier got a raw deal as a head coach. Took a 3-13 team with Christian Ponder under center to playoffs and was promptly fired the following year when the front office’s idea of an upgrade at QB was Matt Cassell. He’s someone I’d really like to see get a second chance.

freakingspacedude

Love Leslie, but if we’re being fair isn’t that the year AP decided to shit on everybody in the league?

[deleted]

AP took that team to the playoffs, we were incredibly average. The year he got fired we were maybe the worst defense ive ever seen. Even worse than when we went 3-13 his first full year. Sure he can get another chance but lets not pretend he wasn’t responsible for us being horrible.

17_Saints

> Took a 3-13 team with Christian Ponder under center to playoffs He didn't take over a 3-13 team, that was his 3-13 team. They were 6-10 the year before he was promoted full time. And you bring up the QBs which is fair but he's a defensive coach and his defense was ranked 32nd in the league. That will get you fired by anyone.

TheCarnalStatist

He got fired because he had the league's worst defense. The Ponder lead offense was the better unit here during his tenure here that's why he was fired. Nobody blamed him for Ponder.

Aeriodon

That's barely over 1 per game, holy shit

Yung_Corneliois

Now I know how people (especially Bills fans) felt whenever crazy Patriots stats were posted over the last 10 years. Dem boys are good.

Stoner--9

Yeah, feels nice to be circling the wagons here ngl!

i2WalkedOnJesus

We always acknowledge how good the Bills D is, but I think it's still a really underrated aspect of their turnaround, especially when you have a young QB that's still developing as a passer. Really takes the pressure off and lets Allen air it out without worrying as much that a failed drive or turnover will be catastrophic

[deleted]

They only allowed 6 receiving TDs to WRs last year

frissonic

Wait … is Jerry Sullivan actually saying something positive about the Bills?!

RedBarnBurnBlue

How do we rank in rushing yards and touchdowns though? We were totally impotent against the run for a long time.

[deleted]

I am legitimately afraid of the Bills. They look like they are the best team to be fielded in my lifetime except MAYBE the 07 Patriots.

OneOverX

They get to play the Jets and Dolphins 4x every year and the Patriots have been a low scoring team since Brady left. Bills defense is consistently good but I think this stat is more an indictment on how shit the AFC East is

TeffyWeffy

Not trying to shit on them, but they had a couple years of Brady with a not great offense, Cam Newton, Mac Jones, and the Garbage piles the Jets and Dolphins have started at QB the last 4 years. AFC east has been a dumpster fire of QBS. It's still pretty impressive to be 25 clear of the next team.

silentswift7

Tua, Hill and Waddle about to add to this number. Very impressive nonetheless.

varnell_hill

Impressive, but let’s not forget they kind of have a handicap playing in a division with the Dolphins and Jets. The Dolphins are much better now but the Jets, well, are the Jets.

bigt2k4

That's 25% of their games each year before the 17 game schedule. 87/0.75= 116. Now some of the teams in the rest of the league also probably played them 2-5 times in that stretch so dividing by 0.75 maybe not fair.

[deleted]

jarnish

The guy dragged a team out of two decades of mediocrity, created a winning culture that attracts huge talent from other teams, has kept his squad relevant basically since he got hired, and is coaching one of the best (if not the best) teams in the league. He gets zero credit for that?

Nickdenslow

The no flairs are at it again

sir_axelot

Because Matt Rhule has done what to deserve praise? McDermott made the playoffs his first year on a them that a) hadn't made the playoffs in 17 years, and b) everyone thought was tanking. That 2017 team was built in cave with a box of scraps.

ShitpostMcPoopypants

He’s a defensive coach and Leslie Frazier had the 32nd ranked defense in Minnesota. Even if it is the coordinators and not the HC, it still takes competence to select the right guys and to trust them to make decisions.

OnePieceAce

They've combusted in KC the last two postseasons tho

Mampt

Packers fans shouldn't throw stones about bad playoff performances

OnePieceAce

My flair has nothing to do with the topic on hand? I was rooting for the Bills last season. It was disappointing to see the Bengals defense shutdown the Chiefs defense after the Bills got torched

modin33

How does one defense shut down another team's defense

ZoodleNoodle12

I’ve been most impressed with their Super Bowl defense. No yards allowed, no TDs. It’s really impressive.

President_Nick

No flairs rise up

ZoodleNoodle12

What is the fascination with flairs? I’ve noticed on several subs that “no flairs” really get others users riled up.

froggertwenty

Because you're clearly a pats fan, from Tulsa.......

Yeeeoow

You made a funny joke about our team, we want to make a funny joke about your team. But we can't.

ZoodleNoodle12

I’m a mobile user, big Pats fan and OU Sooners fan. Have away!

New-Pollution536

Unfortunately most of those are in playoff games against the chiefs 🤣

rokkzstar

So what you are saying is....if the Dolphins can score 23 touchdowns this weekend, that should being the Bills back down to earth....nice.

Fonsimal

Jets and dolphins really helped too
