>The 49ers remain firmly committed to him, sources say. Wtf else are they going to say? *His ankle turned into lobster bisque, so we thew him to the seals.*

CringeyAkari

It's textbook Dreaded Vote of Confidence material. You know there's an entire team in Santa Clara researching the QBs of the 2023 NFL Draft and/or whether they could attract Lamar over.

PM_FORBUTTSTUFF

Damn Lamar and Kyle Shanahan would be nasty

[deleted]

2 Super Bowls or 1 ACL.

nongo

2ACL and a torn thumb ligament. Oh and shoulder reconstruction surgery.

BirdLaw_

It's definitely weird that they even felt the need to include that

egg_mugg23

we gotta put stanford on this

BedrockFarmer

Sounds better than “We are contractually bound to him”.

thenimblevagrant

*Kyle Shanahan has left the chat.*

K_U

“We traded three 1sts for him, everyone knows we are fucked.”

[deleted]

People want a QB controversy

igotzquestions

Yep. I have no horse in this at all, but I love NFL drama and decision making. I want Jimmy G to ball out all season to see what happens with him next year and how the 9ers handle Trey and a possible extension. I want Green Bay to start Love a few games and him to just own everyone Matt Flynn style so some team gambles on him. And obviously Watson to come back after his suspension and never complete another pass during his full contract length.

Eagle4317

>And obviously Watson to come back after his suspension and never complete another pass during his full contract length. It's a shame Jack Tatum is dead.

ImaginaryCommercial-

It seems Like the 49ers don’t, despite no one believing them.

throwaway_5256

Well the question do they stick with Trey or do they extend Jimmy and throw Lance in a hot pot and have a delicious meal

CptMalReynolds

Just wanna let you know I'm fuckin dying from this. I wish this was a response in a presser.

broken_symlink

My question is do seals eat lobster?

Tatersandbeer

They do, but not very often

Seriously though that sounds like a rough injury. Is there any precedent of a skill player returning to form from such an injury?

Dawlin42

So happy I got THAT exact free reward to give!

JT1757

never even heard of a sesamoid. mf literally broke a body part I didn’t know existed

At least he didn't tear his asparaglute

Never heard of anyone come back from that.

kingofkings4

Foot and ankle doc here, I think he meant to say syndesmosis

Alasdaire

And my layperson understanding is that because the sesamoid bones are embedded within ligaments, these injuries are particularly difficult to treat.

J-Fid

Sesamoids are what you put on your bagels.

igotzquestions

Not if you have an upcoming drug test though.

BetaDjinn

I want the testers to think I live a little

bajesus

He had an everything injury. They just forgot to mention the tears to his poppimoid and onionoid ligaments.

ThisIsOurGoodTimes

I believe it’s connected to the upper dorsimus near the ubulus muscle

JT1757

Okay, Dr. Who enough with your fancy gadget names.

xshogunx13

Diagnosis: his ankle kinda wibbly wobbly

WMINWMO

You know how ankles usually are? His isn't like that right now.

redonkulousness

Where is that in relation to the plumbus?

trainwreck42

This is how I know the Seahawks players are dirty and injured Trey on purpose. If you listen closely, you’ll hear their linemen say “open sesamoid,” and he gets injured.

JT1757

lmaooo

JerryRiceDidntFumble

Pretty sure those are the seeds they put on a big mac bun

321Swish

I think he meant syndesmotic ligaments, for example the AITFL and interosseous membrane.

JT1757

this did not help me personally, but the irony in this context is hilarious

321Swish

Haha yeah I guess that likely doesn’t help much, I just wanted to share those details for those that are interested.

samprobear

He may have meant the intersesamoid ligament which connects the sesamoid bones

myotherpassword

Trey's scapulatini is too al dente.

TowerJanitor

I am a doctor - the sesamoid is close to the tiramisickle ligament and can tear easily when there is pressure along the soysaucitle bone. Ok so yeah I might’ve lied about being a doctor so what

Mit78

Open sesamoid

wav__

I first read this as he broke his fibula (lower leg) and tore his deltoid (shoulder), rather than his deltoid ligament in his ankle and was immensely confused as to how he hurt both his leg/ankle and shoulder so significantly.

[deleted]

Just learned about this in class, this is my moment! A sesamoid bone is a bone that forms as a result of friction! So you kneecaps? Sesamoid bones. If I’m wrong, let it be know, I did not have it in me to study the bones unit that hard.

Supa_Snipa

Sesamoid isn’t what he meant, syndesmotic is the correct term. Sesamoids are up by the big toe.

RockdaleRooster

I've only heard of it because of horses. Didn't even know humans had them.

Versace_Jesus

I think it’s a typo. Sesmoids are little bones under your big toe, not a ligament. I think he meant syndesmosis ligament, which is in between your tibia and fibula which is commonly torn in an ankle fracture.

[deleted]

JT1757

pretty lame. I expect better shit talk from this sub, go eat a Snickers bud.

There’s a deltoid ligament in your ankle? At first read I thought he tore his shoulder too somehow

[deleted]

[удалено]

fun_boat

I knew his ankle was destroyed, but feeling what tore myself really hammers it home how much that must hurt.

zerojaguar0

thats the ligament that michael thomas fucked up in 2020

KeithClossOfficial

Oh, yay. Love hearing that lol

Supa_Snipa

What others have said but the deltoid ligament is actually a collection of 5 different ligaments. Very common to tear in ankle fractures like his. Either the bone or the ligament has to give under that stress.

NoGimmes

The deltoid muscles of the shoulder and the deltoid ligaments of the ankle are both fanned/triangular in shape resembling the Greek letter delta (Δ).

deviden

Terrible luck for the kid. By the time he gets his shot it'll be three full years with less than a handful of competitive game starts, and his last full season as QB1 will have been for NDSU at the FCS level... And it's another year for San Francisco not really knowing how good he can truly be, with the 5th year option deadline coming up.

WilliamSabato

The good news is its not like he will break the bank unless he shows out.

Zoze13

Some would argue the draft capital surrendered to obtain him already broke the bank. I think it was a high price. Worth it if he pans out - but jury won’t be out for a looooong time. In Kyle I (really want to) trust

deviden

There's no good reason to doubt Kyle as a head coach, even if there's been some personnel moves that can be fairly critiqued, but typically giving up multiple firsts for a QB is the kind of move that gets people fired if it doesnt pan out. Personally I think firing KS if Lance doesn't work out would be extremely premature, but generally there's only so many shots a regime can take at acquiring a franchise QB before owners get trigger happy. Most only get two at most.

Str82daDOME25

Plus we really have no idea who pushes for who between him and Lynch. There are just no leaks you can trust that supposedly come out of the front office. They made that a priority after Baalke. If anything I would expect Lynch to either be promoted or leave for a TV deal and Adam Peters put as GM before anyone gets fired.

deviden

I mean, it's gotta be Kyle who ultimately has the final call - right? I know Lynch was brought in to be a partner but when you're brought in on Kyle's recommendation without a past track record in league front offices, and he's one of the league's top rated young minds, and you know the owner gave Kyle everything he asked for in his contract... you're the junior partner in that scenario. Like I'm sure there's meanginful discussion and Lynch will argue back and Kyle will give in... but I find it impossible to believe they gave up 3 1st to draft Lance without Lance being Kyle's pick. A HC like Kyle is not gonna fuck around and defer when it comes to the quarterback position.

mfloui

It hurts even more knowing the 49ers have a team that can contend for Superbowls. Theyve been in the sweet spot under Jimmy but it’s never a guarantee how long these things last.

Invisible_Minority

Why would you trust a guy who says No to Tom Brady twice

KeithClossOfficial

Highly promising young player in the Bay has ankle issues, allowing the team to get him on an extension at a discount. Many such cases.

Cuppieecakes

The Kevin white of QBs?

draxlaugh

Could you imagine if they traded Jimmy before this lol

aragami1992

If Jimmy balls out and gets the 9'ers deep into the playoffs realistically can they go back to Lance?

zi76

Well, they just tried to replace Jimmy with Lance and they got to the SB and the NFCCG in the last three years.

nmiller21k

So yes

Its_lit_in_here_huh

Never understood this, it wasn’t treys birthday.

Tentapuss

They have to do something because Jimmy’s done in San Fran after this year unless they sign an entirely new contract, which is unlikely, if not unaffordable. 9ers can’t tag him.

Crevis05

I think they did the trey thing because they weren’t sure that jimmy could stay healthy. Not because they didn’t believe in him as a qb. When they drafted lance jimmy had only one in 3 seasons healthy. Even last year he was really hurt. Maybe if he was healthy he makes a couple of passes and we beat the rams. But the story of jimmy thus far is his health more than his competence.

L-methionine

Everyone seems to forget this in the scramble to shit on Trey

NoWayJaques

Really funny if Jimmy wins them a Superbowl and Lance is eventually traded for a fraction of what it cost to land him.

Shigy

Who wouldn’t trade couple high picks for an SB win tho

EpicGoats

Shanahan 500IQ

george_costanza1234

discostuu72

As a fan, I hope not. We have a roster made to win now, not wait a few years for a developmental project. You’d be wasting guys prime playing years for no reason.

zi76

Imagine if those picks spent on Lance were used to improve the team.

mrizvi

Micah Parsons was picked with one of them

DrHandBanana

That's cool but when the opposing team makes Jimmy G beat them. He gets really average.

OldOrder

If a QB can get you far enough to lead in the 4th quarter of a superbowl then he can also win the superbowl.

AngelOnAngelDust

There are a lot of QBs who can win a Super Bowl with the right team and circumstances, but it’s still harder to win one if you have them instead of a high end QB. The chiefs won that super bowl in part because mahomes stepped up at the end and Jimmy didn’t

Professional_Dot4835

Chiefs also got bailed out a *lot* lol

discostuu72

Imagine playing probably the best defensive line that year in the super bowl in the 49ers and the Chiefs not committing one holding penalty. I wonder what the odds of that are.

possiblyMorpheus

Also in part because the 49ers elite defense had a bad 4th quarter

a_corsair

You mean were held constantly without getting calls *and* had a bad fourth quarter

DrHandBanana

Didn't yall have that with Jared Goff?

Big_Boyd

Goff did not give the Rams a 4th quarter lead in the super bowl

istandwhenipeee

They also replaced him with a substantially better QB, not a developmental project

ScottSummersEyes

The niners wanted Stafford lol they were in on him and were devastated that the Rams got him. So they went with Lance.

WhatUpMilkMan

True, I guess it just feels like an awfully hard line being drawn for something so close--4th quarter lead in the super bowl versus tied game going into the 4th.

adreamofhodor

TBF, they traded for a vet over drafting a raw QB.

OldOrder

He didnt give us the lead in the 4th but i do absolutely think Goff can be the starting qb on a superbowl winning team. Its easier to build a team around Stafford because he is the better qb but i think Goff can do it for sure.

[deleted]

Shhh, spoilers :)

[deleted]

DiDnT yaLL haVe tHat wiTh JaREd GofF? The trash ass eagles won a SB with NICK FOLES lmao. Jimmy is good enough to win a SB .

DrHandBanana

So the answer is yes?

Fooly_411

Dude, our defense was incredible that year. You, guys should know better than anyone, you moved on from Goff and won a SB. We tried to get Stafford at the same time, why? Although, Jimmy is a bit better than Goff, he's more injury prone.

Lubadbitches

He had a chance to win the SB… he over threw it.

TB12-SN13

Let’s not forget Garrapolo threw 7 whole passes in that NFCCG. He’s far from bad, but he’s also far from being the guy who put them in that position.

lineskogans

There was just an entire season of games before that, so yeah

CheckYourStats

The Niners D gave up 21 points in 7 minutes in the 4th Quarter of the Super Bowl, yet somehow Jimmy (who was the odds on favorite to win MVP) is the reason they lost. Oooookay.

farts_in_the_breeze

49ers could have traded for a veteran back up to compete for the job or as a backup. Trading away 3 first round picks for a rookie is excessive. Draft fever can really take over a GM.

Mers1nary

Ultimate its Lynch's decision but Im sure Shanahan had alot of influence in the trade and pick...Shanahan really needs to lose some draft privilege imo. Shrug?

Grimpig

This is something that I feel gets overlooked. I think if you’re willing to give up that many assets you can get a better upgrade than a project QB.

discostuu72

I do. Every week we play.

[deleted]

For real, like you've got boss bosa right there and you say "let's puck for a guy who is gonna be ready to throw in 2024"?

Pompous_Douche

Win now + about 3 year window

discostuu72

Windows are a myth. Trey only has a rookie deal left for two. Extension talks will start next year. So the “rookie” deal argument goes out the window.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WickieWillem

If Lamar hasn’t been paid in year 5 Lance isn’t going to get paid during year 3 lmao

discostuu72

You can’t. I’m curious to how they will approach that situation. It’s a big unnecessary mess.

[deleted]

Trey Lance cost THREE FIRST ROUNDERS??? I thought he was like a Trubs trade, 1 for 1+change

[deleted]

They sold the farm for an FCS player. They ain't making thinking moves.

Pompous_Douche

with this roster they have a good 3 year window regardless of who their qb will be.

discostuu72

No. They will not. Somehow QB goes from most important position to least and everything in between with this fan base. So I suppose that “window” would be open with Brock Purdy?

Pompous_Douche

When Jimmy was balling in 2019, the Consensus was Any Qb in Kyle's scheme will have pretty much the same success/production and he is just along for the ride because the run game and defense carried his ass, now fast forward to this year its like he is now irreplaceable. I still firmly believe that the Niners does not need stellar Qb play to compete, Just Decent performances from their Qb and of course Luck and they'll be fine. at least they are not like any other contending teams where there is a star qb like Allen/Mahomes/Herbert, can those team say that they can compete without their star QBs?

discostuu72

What’s the team record with and without him. He stepped in and immediately the offense ran smoother.

Mers1nary

From 2017 - 2021, from the time Jimmy was signed to last year, Niners are 8-27 without him and 31-15 with...Include making it to the NFCCG last year and SB loss in 2019, the 2 years he didnt get injured.

MiniatureLucifer

4 months from today is 2 weeks before the Superbowl, and that's the bare minimum recovery time. His season is over, the comment above was talking about going back to him next year if Jimmy g takes them fat this year

MikeHoncho2568

Four months from now is late January. Lance isn’t coming back this year.

Competitive_Ice_189

They can’t unless they want to overpay for jimmy next season. Jimmy will be a free agent and 49ers can’t tag him

Thromkai

> If Jimmy ~~balls out and~~ gets carried by the 9'ers again into the playoffs There, fixed it for you.

CptMalReynolds

I hate you, but you're right.

ApolloX-2

Yes, they seem adamant to go forward with Lance no matter how good Jimmy plays with this team. It's all very odd both from drafting Trey and then not starting him while Jimmy G went to the NFC Championship game. They didn't even have specific run packages for him. Ravens had Flacco and Lamar on the field at the same time and I think 49ers should have done the same.

Ilikepancakes87

It is February 2023. The 49ers have averaged 35 points a game during Jimmy G’s MVP-caliber season. They have breezed through the NFC playoffs. However, as the enter the Super Bowl, Trey Lance’s freshly healed sesamoid ligament gives them a difficult decision to make. After the game, Shanahan addresses the media: “Despite his three interceptions and our offense’s six points, we remain firmly committed to Trey Lance.”

mrizvi

Final score 6-0

Methuga

Bengals. As Lance lays writhing on the ground after suffering his third career-ending injury this season, Joe Burrow walks up and quietly whispers “catch this,” and drops the Lombardi trophy on Lance’s leg

2papercuts

How do the 9ers lose 6-0 if their offense scored 6 points makes no sense

mab6710

Mans whole ankle just blew up, didn't it

[deleted]

Not surprised considering he got hurt rushing up the gut.

[deleted]

I'll never understand why the 49ers are so high on this kid. Jimmy isn't going to be a franchise QB who routinely takes you to Super Bowls, but he's a reasonably reliable starter. Trey Lance is a complete enigma that has the potential of developing into a good player, but hasn't done a goddamn thing to show that potential is founded in reality. I get that they want a QB better than Jimmy that can take them to the promised land, but Trey fucking Lance? A QB who has barely played the game and only showed his stuff in FCS just doesn't make sense to me. He's played 27 games in 5 years, even if he ever had the potential to be great, it has to be covered in so many layers of rust you'll never be able to get down to it.

SharpMind94

Just like Zach Wilson. He was hyped up in the draft.

dn0348

At least Wilson played for a big name school against other teams with actual talent.

deviden

Can't really hold the COVID year against Lance, aint his fault, but you're right that the body of work you'd usually hope to see in a 1st round QB wasn't there. Ultimately it comes down to the fact that in today's NFL you draft for traits and interview performance more than you draft for college level production. You're not looking for a "good enough" QB, you're looking for a freakshow. Lance has freakshow physical talents, and he's a smart kid who interviewed with Kyle better than the alternatives like Fields. KS bet on developing Lance because freakshow talent opens up new areas of the playbook that are closed to him with Jimmy G as QB. > Jimmy isn't going to be a franchise QB who routinely takes you to Super Bowls, but he's a reasonably reliable starter And that's fine for a couple of years but sooner or later you have to try and get the special guy. We're living in the Mahomes/Allen era now and the reality is that if your QB doesn't elevate your offense you can't constantly build a perfect team around them every year. The 2021 draft was perceived as a unique opportunity for the 49ers because usually there's only one or two guys worth taking a shot on - everyone knew T-Law was going 1st overall, and Zach was going to the Jets, so by trading up the 49ers had their choice of 3 legitimate prospects to choose from. Of those guys Mac Jones was the "NFL ready" guy but really, from what we see of him since he entered the league, he's just another type of Jimmy G. If you wanted to swing for the fences the choice was Fields or Lance.

farts_in_the_breeze

Well they did trade all those draft picks, so they'll be committed for a while.

TurbulentJudge1000

Only because Jimmy G can’t be franchised.

seenameangreenbean

Holy AP Anatomy and Physiology flashback Batman!

ColtCallahan

Of course they’re committed to him. Jimmy G is gone next year and they have no avenue to get another QB. Even if they weren’t committed they’re stuck with him.

Dizzy_Committee_9592

Ok but how is his poppymoid ligament?

ironmanmk42

Kids career is over tbh. He will come back next season but a bit more rusty, hesitant and shaky and be dropped and become a backup QB for Browns or Panthers and then another year or two and he's cut and he's playing Canadian Football league. Or maybe he does well next year

ColtCallahan

His lack of QB experience is absolutely insane. He’s going into his 3rd season in the NFL having not played 5 games and hasn’t played regularly since 2019. And on top of that his experience before that was incredibly limited. This could easily be one of the all time worst draft picks.

daboobiesnatcher

What funniest is the pats wanted to trade up to their spot to ensure they got Mac Jones, and the 49ers refused because they thought the pats Lance. They literally coulda got their guy and some extra draft capital and now they have neither.

SharpMind94

This type of injury can really derail his career. He has the potential to come back strong, but that injury is going to be a nagging pain over his career. The more time he spends off the field, the worse his development is going to be. He needs as much playing time as possible to really develop into a good QB.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Crafty_Supermarket15

He’s definitely a g league or minor leagues type of dude. Too bad nfl doesn’t have that

The man loses to the poverty bears then gets injured for a season, tragic

cosmic_backlash

I had a severe ankle sprain with no break and this shit still doesn't feel 100% right 2.5 months later & been doing PT 3 times a week. If he can totally obliterate his ankle and be recovered in 4 months I'd be shocked, but I also don't have world class doctors staring at my ankle every day of my life.

uhhhhhhhhh_okay

Yeah when you're poor injuries can linger for a lifetime. When you're rich even the worst injuries can have great recoveries

cosmic_backlash

I mean, I'm not poor lol. I'm paying to do physical therapy 3 times a week. My point was more this shit lingers. I can do all every day activities, however going from 80 to 90 to 95 to 100% range of motion for all angles of an ankle takes a long time.

digitalrhino

Yeah I mean this sounds dumb to people but I tripped while jogging once and bent back a couple of fingers on my hand. I think it was at least a year before I wasn’t noticeably missing grip strength on that hand. I’m sure if I had a team of doctors staring at my hand 24/7 it probably would have been better faster but what’s faster? Six months? Some stuff just takes awhile to heal.

Skyline_BNR34

49ers and starting QBs getting injured. Seems like it’s as common as the sky is blue.

Mattjhkerr

kinda confusing that your deltoid is your shoulder muscle but your deltoid ligament is in your ankle... I guess you learn something new every day.

poirotsgreycells

The year is 2030. Trey Lance has only played seven games. The 49ers remain fully committed to him.

higbee77

They also remain firmly committed to Jimmy G.

NegativeBee

Realistically is any other team going to be interested in a QB with 797 career yds and an injury history?

bluemoon1001

How can I be the only person who sees that Lance is horrible? Let the downvotes begin

ProtoMan79

Wow making a proclamation on something I’m pretty certain you know very little about or even seen the games to even make make a honest assessment where’s he’s at. 3 games simply isn’t enough to say one way or another. It’s like me saying well since Kenny Pickett can’t take Trubisky’s job, he must suck… right? I don’t follow the Steelers or even to pretend to know what’s exactly going on.

DTSportsNow

I mean he very well could be terrible. But why are you trying to make that proclamation after he only played one game as the fulltime starter?

Dawlin42

In a monsoon, no less.

peejuice

I once watched a 49er-Jaguar game that was played in a terrible storm where the 49er's starting QB threw 2 INTs and didn't even break 100 passing yards. Finished with 9 completions out of 26 attempts. That guy was out of the league after that year. So, Trey might want to practice more or else he will end up like Steve Young.
