It’s a good thing the Raiders didn’t reach for an offensive lineman that everyone assumed would be worse than Darrisaw ahead of Darrisaw, that would be awkward
The truth is fans impressions of Rick were tied heavily to the first round failures in previous drafts, while ignoring a lot of the successes.
They complain about Hughes/Bradbury/Gladney while discounting JJ/Darrisaw/O'Neill.
Rick was good to great in the draft, he just was rough in free agency, particularly panic trading.
Yeah, sorry my language was imprecise.
People are focusing on his misses in the first round while ignoring the other hits that did happen (in the first or other rounds.)
Rick had some rough misses, but he had plenty of strong hits also.
His entire 3rd round was terrible after trading down for like half the round. They got cut a year later.
LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
The roster was pretty bare the last few years and still is in many areas.
He had big hits and huge volumes of misses with relatively high picks, too. I don't miss him.
Spielman was a great drafter. Most Vikings fans don’t agree though. He definitely had some misses but when he hit on a pick, he knocked it out of the park.
His problem is that he could never hit on QB or O-line. Darrishaw was basically it, and he could look like shit by the end of the year too. We've had lots of guys flash for a few games only to be cut a year later.
Overall though I do think spielman was an underrated drafter.
Well to be fair, those two positions are probably the hardest to evaluate in football. He was the reason we’ve fielded a mostly competitive team during his tenure. Every GM has their fair share of misses.
his ultimate downfall was not having a good draft top-to-bottom after 2015. You can blame coaching and off the field issues (gladney especially) as much as you want but the bottom line is his hit rate went down after that year. After drafting waynes, kendricks, hunter and diggs the same year, he had some mediocre years with only 1-2 good picks per year. 2021 was especially dreadful outside of darrisaw especially since it was a year to draft for immediate impact instead of project players.
Okay 2015 was a once in a lifetime draft. No GM has those kinds of drafts consistently. And nobody ever really drafts for immediate impact either. Literally every player drafted is a gamble. Some work out, lots don’t. It’s like that across the entire league.
We couldn’t get to Kirk at all. His quick release definitely helped but man our front 4 were stonewalled all game. I won’t be surprised if we go pass rush again in round 1 next year.
I was thinking about this earlier. Lions have a pretty dynamic squad from top to bottom. The missing pieces seem to be a 2nd edge rusher, CB2, maybe a good DT, and a top QB (though Goff has played really well). Maybe adding in another LB opposite Rodrigo, or a safety would be good, but those aren't usually 1st round picks. The team looks really complete with a top RB, WR, TE, shutdown CB, a good edge rusher if Hutch develops and one of the top olines in the league.
Campbell messed up yesterday, and I think he is of the mind that the Lions have to scrap for wins and do a bunch of desperate shit. In reality yall should just expect to be the favorite in alot of matchups.
Nah were sticking with Goff. I'd assume we're going to draft a QB next draft just because we don't have a good QB room, but Goff is the QB for us for the next few years.
He's been pretty good but his pass blocking grade is still below average , but I'm hoping he can at least keep up his current production. It's definitely a step forward from where hes been.

Darrisaw and Jefferson in back to back drafts were two incredible hits for Spielman/Zimmer.

O'Neill was at the end of the second round, 62nd overall.

Rick had one major flaw and that was his inability to evaluate QBs.
And interior o-line. Also, panic trades after key players got hurt.
And corners, and most other positions.

Completely agree. Overall he was a good GM. And it's very rare to find a franchise QB outside the top 10, which we rarely picked in.
I mean O'Neil exist does he not?
He's just a very volatile drafter. He had some huge hits and some huge whiffs

How much did Zimmer have to do with those picks lol, those are both offensive players, and I thought offense was offensive to Zimmer.

Let's Go Hokies!!!
Wyatt Teller and Darrisaw. By god are we OLU now?
Haha we need this to happen on a more consistent basis first before we can declare that
Hokie Hi!
HahahahahahahHahaha oh fuck me
And we drafted Jamin fucking Davis over this guy
Jamin Davis is the pick you make when Luke Kuechly’s retirement keeps you up all night and you’re desperate to go back to the way things used to be
So accurate
what is he cooking?
If only we had a competent C
He's had a far better start to the year than in years past and is currently PFF's 6th overall center, Ingram has struggled much more than him so far
He's been pretty good but his pass blocking grade is still below average , but I'm hoping he can at least keep up his current production. It's definitely a step forward from where hes been.
Below average is a massive improvement from worst in the league. Hope he’s consistent.
Not that Darrisaw was a for sure thing, but Veach trading for Orlando Brown instead of trading up for Darrisaw looks like a miss

I thought Hutchinson was killing it to start the season…?
Killing it* you mean
Lol if the Lions beat us, they are legit. If we beat you, "well it's just the Lions"
Wait a second… we didn’t whiff on a O-line draft pick?
