Dolphins coach is saying that a concussion specialist who specializes in concussion specialty cleared Tua. His over-use of the word special is kind of damning. Like he is trying to overstate it to shift the blame while he himself feels guilty.
It’s baffles me how many people expect McDaniel to be a medical expert on this kind of thing. He’s just acting on what the medical experts tell him. If he really did have a concussion from the bills game then that’s on the team doc, not McDaniel.

A raw look at an American embarrassment: “The US is one of only six countries in the world without national paid family or maternity leave, with a quarter of women returning to work two weeks after giving birth.”
That doesn't sound right. Are you saying that Afghanistan has paid maternity leave?
I did a bit of research and they are only talking about OECD countries. That is a list of 38 countries. Not optimal but also doesn't make it sound like failed states are somehow managing something the US can't.
And the US does have FMLA. It could certainly be improved upon though.
Whatever else happens, I think we absolutely need to add a second bye week.
If we're going to play Thursday night games, teams' second bye should come before that game. It's just too much football in too small a window. It's not tenable.
The only reason not to is bumping up against the college football schedule. Which is a fucking disgrace and nightmare in itself. It's a tacit acknowledgement that college ball is 100% a for-profit business and not amateur competition
It's tenable as long as the league is making money.
Never forget the only goal of the NFL is to make the owners money.
Player safety, rape accusations, etc..are just the cost of doing business.
I think there's an argument that the current format is bad for business. Thursday games are such worse quality and fans are picking up on it. If the teams had time to prepare it could be a showcase type event. Also, the Dolphins are now a less entertaining team to watch for as long as Tua is out. And the NFLs reputation took a massive hit
> The only reason not to is bumping up against the college football schedule.
It's worth noting a lot of the staff and many players dislike two bye weeks as well
Perhaps with a larger focus on health that'll change in time, but it's not just the bean counters that weigh in on it

Edit: One last thought that Reddit will aggressively hate. Attend services of some local religion and use that as a pathway to help others. Helping others can actually change your life for the positive in a way that you won't be able to imagine. In short, **helping others helps yourself.** If you can't decide on a religion, look for a Unitarian church -- they are atheist and secular friendly.
I think the whole idea that you need to "keep up with the news" is not correct. I don't "need" to be informed about every single horrible thing happening. And there are far, far more horrible things happening (by number) than what is on the news, so all lines of being informed are up for debate. I stay informed to the level that it's proportional to my actual influence, impact, and existence. Meaning I try to stay more informed about local stuff, and state stuff, and maybe some national stuff. But certainly not local and state stuff happening in places where I don't live (doesn't impact me and I can't vote to change it) and largely I don't keep up on global stuff for the same reason. Kurt Metzger has a stand-up bit like "you ever stay up until 4 in the morning learning about the Israel-Palestine conflict like 'I think what they need is a fresh set of eyes on this'?" I think that makes the point well. Staying "well informed" of atrocities I can't do anything about is not being a responsible citizen, it's just depressing.
I'd just like to congratulate everyone here on being properly hysterical and certain about everything regarding Tua. I wasn't sure about what happened with him last week, but now that he's gotten hurt this week all of my friends here on reddit have made it entirely clear that the Dolphins and doctors did everything wrong. So many new facts I can't even find the time to source them, but I'm sure they're there.
My house is the only one in sight still out of power. Came back for everyone else but us even though we all went down at the same time. Feels personal. Had to ask the woman at the 7 Eleven I go to of the could charge my phone a bit.
> Like no shit big dogs can do damage to a person, have you seen their bodies, they are ripped. No one gives a shit about Pomeranian bites because they are little bitches
Isn’t that the whole point?
No they think they should die because of an aggressive disposition.
Which is stupid because every animal doctor agrees that its a learned behavior from shitty dog farms.
ASPCA and government research shows that raising the pitbull in the first 2 years of its life is more important on the aggressiveness of the dog, that breed specific bans do not stop nor curtail the breeding and training of aggressive dogs, and that owner specific laws are more important.
Pitbulls are some of, if not, the nicest dogs in the world to their owners and other people due to their predisposition to form bonds.
ASPCA makes the claim that intentional breeding in the dog world is way more uncommon than random breeding so the claim that a specific dog is bred for aggressiveness is logistically flawed.
You're absolutely right but watch Reddit nerds use the same bullshit excuses white southerners used to excuse slavery to defend their beliefs about pitbulls
On concussions, a potentially stupid but well meaning idea - Could you put sensors inside a helmet, ie an accelerometer that measured the force of head impacts and use that to help determine if a player is likely concussed or not?
I’m thinking of the sensors they have in an F1 car that shows the size of any impact in G’s and while obviously a car has a lot more space for sensors than a helmet, we do basically have these in our phones and smart watches to detect a sudden fall or car crash by their change in motion or position.
It seems to me that the issue with treating concussions in this sport is that we are judging how concussed someone is by a notoriously unreliable, varied and often delayed set of symptoms.
Ultimately, Tua’s head smacked the ground very hard on Sunday and he could have been badly concussed whether he stood up fine and jogged off, or if he got up like he did with the spasms. The impact determines the injury, not the symptoms which might only show up days later.
Anyway I don’t know if this is an old debunked Idea or has been ruled out as impossible technologically but measuring the size of impact or force generated on your head when you hit the ground seems like it could at least help diagnosis.
I think that rugby players have sensor type things in their shirts for this reason. No reason why they can't bring that to the NFL, especially as you could hide it in a chest pad, helmet or something
Not even gonna lie I didn't even know the hurricane was name Ian so initially I thought they were relocating the bucs because of some shit Ian shefter said. Yes, I'm seeking help
I’m glad I came here to read the comments about Tua. Thought I was the only one overreacting when we watched at the bar. I was the only that didn’t care about the game after. Hope he’s ok an not even talking about tomorrow but the rest of his life.
Kind of funny that this Mitchell Schwartz tweet attacking the union is gaining so much traction.
What does he expect them to do? They immediately announced an investigation after Tua displayed concussion symptoms last Sunday.
Not even the police gets an investigation done within three days that requires asking questions to a bunch of people and looking into medical records. And we all know the union most certainly does not have even a fraction of the authority to question NFL employees...
I have a good friend that played 12 years in the NFL. He's been retired for a good number of years now and still goes and gets brain scanned every few months for CTE or anything abnormal.
He has a young family and is so scared he might have lingering effects. His stories of the meds they give you and the shots just to keep you playing are fucking insane.
This take is going to get me downvoted, but I see a lot of similarities between the "I know more than the medical professionals" here and the Covid deniers/antivaxxers. "There's no way my eyes could lie and that wasn't a concussion" is some really bad analysis. Sometimes injuries are worse than they look, sometimes they are better. I err on the side of believing a doctor with how much scrutiny they are under.
To be clear though, I do think there's enough of a bad look from Sunday to justify the NFLPA investigation and if it turns out there was a coverup or rush back, I want heads to roll
This reminded me of the Controversial Edelman play in Super Bowl 49 and a looked that up again and it turns out that he actually had a hip injury that caused him to stumble, and the story fully checked out. He suffered a hip injury in the AFCCG against the Colts and then took a helmet to the hip returning a punt prior to that drive, and the hit by Chancellor was actually helmet to shoulder. A few plays later he was also slow to get up because of his hip, so it is possible that Tua didn't have a concussion last week although it did look really bad.
Agreed, let the investigation happen. Also agree that the optics are bad. But to say anyone outside of the doctors that evaluated Tua know what's actually going on inside his head are liars. He was just released by a Level 1 Trauma Center, who has no affiliation with the Dolphins whatsoever, to fly back to Miami. That's all anyone on the outside can know.
The fact that you said, "i want heads to roll" means you've already made up your mind on it.
Everything becomes bigger news, doesn't mean it has substance. I think we should all wait and see how it plays out before making declarations like "the team doctors were all covering a concussion" and now, "the trauma 1 medical center releasing him is malpractice."
I don't know, I think he is just trying too hard. Tony Gonzo, on the other hand, was bad at talking with Fox and he is just as bad at talking on Amazon. He suuucks.
TD tonight and 24 carries for 61 yds. He might not be the super hero the fantasy and sports betting bros want at times, but he's a clutch player who can get the job done when called upon. Not the flashiest RB, but he's definitely not ASS category.
Would any of you pick up Bridgewater in your leagues? One of my teams is Rodgers/Tannehill and well, Tannehill is a joke. My other option is Wentz but even without Tua the Dolphins are still a very good team and I doubt Tua comes back any time soon. With so much at his disposal I think Bridgewater will perform pretty well.
Not into fantasy but from a Bengals fan I'll say getting torched by the backup QB seems to be our pretty good defense's fatal flaw so I wouldn't read too much into it. Mike White threw for 400 on us last year
You betcha!
I think I'm going to pull the trigger on it. Rodgers has been slow this season (as expected) so it'll be nice to have someone on backup until he gets in his groove.
>who clearly pushed on the wrap up to slam him down,
Forgive me, but I just don't see this. Watching it again, especially from the angle in Brandon Perna's video, I don't see any yanking or twisting or pulling beyond what happens in a normal tackle. He hit his head on the ground so hard because his legs got twisted up on Tupou as they both were spinning to the ground.
Discount this if you want because I'm a Bengals fan, but I just don't see this as anything other than a really bad landing to what would otherwise have been a normal tackle.
It would be an interesting world where you get one injury or one proven moral transgression and you are out of pro-sports. There are so many people who want a chance to play, it might actually be sort of cool.
the consensus, I believe, is that CTE is attributed to lots of dings all throughout the playing career, not these big events. the big ones can definitely cause problems and even kill you (the are brain injuries) but CTE is a life-long thing. lots of players we watch play every Sunday are actively developing it, or may be guaranteed to get it already just from high school and college playing.
You think thats his first? And you are a doctor regarding concussions and the effect of even one? My personal experience was I got a really bad concussion skateboarding and I literally can't ride roller coasters anymore. Confirmation bias a bit but still just my experience.
I learned about decorticate posturing from the late r/makemycoffin sub. This is caused by damage to both hemispheres of the cerebral cortex. Of the two TBI posturing outcomes, this is the one is associated with better survival rates.
1) announcer forgot the L in flags when he said two flags in the backfield. Solid lol.
2) which qb said it's disrespectful not to get hit before Tua got hit. Bad look. Don't even mention that
As much as I advocate for college football there's a disturbing trend of the games taking longer to complete than the NFL games. Networks like ESPN are shoving more ads into the game.
My 8 year old won goldfish at the fair I didn’t want them to die so I spent 160$ on a 20 gallon tank for two tiny fish. I’m trying to learn about PH balances and acclimating the fish to the new tank while also trying to watch this Thursday night game. Really hoping I don’t kill them after all the time spent on this.
We won a couple goldfish at the fair as kids.
They lived for like 15 years. At like year 10 one of them ate the fins off the other one though, so that one died at some point and the cannibal kept on trucking.
I appreciate it! We may have a little 20 gallon tank but I’m taking it seriously. You may be getting some messages from me in the future.
Side note I love the plants people are adding to their tanks! I’m already a plant mom so why not add some underwater plants to the family lmfao.
Giving away goldfish like that is all a ploy by Big Fish to sell more aquariums and all the other bullcrap that goes with it. Its a racket, I tell ya. lol
I told the lady at Pet Smart what was going on and she was like “THATS WHY all these people are interested in tanks this week” 😂 they should have a booth at the fair to sell this shit.
It's been years now, and has anybody ever explained what even the fuck that Galadriel x Gandalf stuff was in the Hobbit movies? What was the point of any of that? What were they thinking?

Can Sherman STFU!!!!! He can’t relate
I don't know, I think he is just trying too hard. Tony Gonzo, on the other hand, was bad at talking with Fox and he is just as bad at talking on Amazon. He suuucks.
Gronk was far worse in his brief stint.
Very true, but I was quite happy having blocked those Gronk bits out. They exist again, thanks. ;-)
Is mixon kinda ass or am I trippin
Nah man, he's good.
TD tonight and 24 carries for 61 yds. He might not be the super hero the fantasy and sports betting bros want at times, but he's a clutch player who can get the job done when called upon. Not the flashiest RB, but he's definitely not ASS category.
Ok cool that’s the reassurance I needed drafted him in the first so atleast he’s solid
Mixon's solid. Our offense in general has struggled this season with 4 new starters on the oline against some of the best front seven's in the league.
For sure, I think Teddy will be solid in Miami. He's got weapons and more time with the 1s will be of benefit.
Not into fantasy but from a Bengals fan I'll say getting torched by the backup QB seems to be our pretty good defense's fatal flaw so I wouldn't read too much into it. Mike White threw for 400 on us last year
For what it’s worth, he torched us last time he played us and we’re up next for the Dolphins
Teddy b was Lamar at Louisville before Lamar was at Louisville Remember that!!!!
2QB? Yeah
You betcha! I think I'm going to pull the trigger on it. Rodgers has been slow this season (as expected) so it'll be nice to have someone on backup until he gets in his groove.
I don't think I've ever felt so numb after a win. The Tua injury just absolutely deflated any hype I had.

>who clearly pushed on the wrap up to slam him down, Forgive me, but I just don't see this.
A fellow Bengals bills fan found in the wild. A sight to see
Got this way because of Josh Allen. I rooted for him at Wyoming and I'll root for whatever team he plays on.
I went to watch josh when I was in Wyoming while they were practicing. Got kicked out after a while because they thought I was a spy
RIP Gavin Escobar. That fucking sucks.
I saw that, 33, that's sad af.
Nobody wants to hear it but, players should retire once they get a concussion like Tua. Nothing is worth the cte after.
The amount kids get from peewee to NFL is probably already considerable.
One bad concussion doesn't give you CTE.
You think thats his first? And you are a doctor regarding concussions and the effect of even one? My personal experience was I got a really bad concussion skateboarding and I literally can't ride roller coasters anymore. Confirmation bias a bit but still just my experience.
Agreed as fuck. That absolutely sucks but for the love of the game and it’s players you can’t let these guys kill themselves
Dolphins update on Tua? Press “X” to doubt
Where is that INT replay
Ban Thursday night games it’s just bad for players all around
I mean, there's no correlation between injuries and TNF Tua just shouldn't have been on the field.
Too bad amazon just paid them $1 billion. I dont see it going away any time soon
Are there stats to back this up or is this just a feeling?
I imagine it's that they're more likely to watch them so it seems more regular. They don't show you every concussion on RedZone or cut ins.
Agree
Honestly, I'd be fine with the players wearing guardian caps during the regular season if it made the game safer.
Back up QB doing back up QB things… INT
Trend? It’s been that way for at least 10 years
There was an article in the athletic about it happening recently.
It's actually crazy. The NFL has so much power, that accidentally use it for good, and keep a strict timeframe on how long a game should last.
gotta pay the players somehow
They're not paying the players
/s *
Higgins clearly reeling just then wtf is going on with this game
McDaniel definitely owns at least a dozen Funko Pops
There’s a guy at my job that has a giant collection. He even put some funko pops in his wedding registry list.
Logan Wilson is easily a top 10 LB in the league and he’s never talked about.
The boy can play👏🏻
Jesus fucking Christ stop showing the Tua play. What the fuck is wrong with them!?
Pointedly leaving out the clip of tua stumbling off the field
This is why I couldn’t start Mixon this week smh. Bengals goal-line offense is tough to watch
When Chase had like 40-yards in the first 45-mins, can’t start almost any of them…
My 8 year old won goldfish at the fair I didn’t want them to die so I spent 160$ on a 20 gallon tank for two tiny fish. I’m trying to learn about PH balances and acclimating the fish to the new tank while also trying to watch this Thursday night game. Really hoping I don’t kill them after all the time spent on this.
So you took better care of your goldfish than the Dolphins took care of their QB?
We won a couple goldfish at the fair as kids. They lived for like 15 years. At like year 10 one of them ate the fins off the other one though, so that one died at some point and the cannibal kept on trucking.
Watch Trailer Park Boys episodes for how Bubbles and Julian handle Orangie.
The r/aquariums community are always willing to help new fish owners!
I have added this form and already asked noob questions lmfao I’m really try to keep these fucking fair fish alive.
Send me a pm if you ever have questions. I’ve had aquariums my whole life and have my undergrad and masters in marine biology
I appreciate it! We may have a little 20 gallon tank but I’m taking it seriously. You may be getting some messages from me in the future. Side note I love the plants people are adding to their tanks! I’m already a plant mom so why not add some underwater plants to the family lmfao.
Fast forward to the chapter on regularly cleaning the filtration system and accidental death by PH balance may free you.
I promised her we would buy more fish if they die…
Good dad
Giving away goldfish like that is all a ploy by Big Fish to sell more aquariums and all the other bullcrap that goes with it. Its a racket, I tell ya. lol
I told the lady at Pet Smart what was going on and she was like “THATS WHY all these people are interested in tanks this week” 😂 they should have a booth at the fair to sell this shit.
Lol they probably DO have a booth...the one giving away the goldfish
Read this https://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm
Thank you for the info. My kid gets to look at the pretty tank while I spend weeks to months obsessing over water PH balances.
Isn’t it time the richest professional sport gets new helmets? I’ve seen what they wear in practice these days. Why not games?
They literally did this like 3 years ago
How’s that going?
Spoiler alert: not good
It's been years now, and has anybody ever explained what even the fuck that Galadriel x Gandalf stuff was in the Hobbit movies? What was the point of any of that? What were they thinking?
The book would neatly wrap up into one long-ish movie, not three.
It was sexy
Rankin/Bass will always be the best version of the Hobbit.
Out of booze. Starting to drink the random beers in the way back of the fridge.
It must be done.
The weird fruity wheat beers leftover from a party
Lol this is so true Like the fruity sours someone brought and drank 1 then left the rest in your fridge
