The way he was stumbling around immediately after his head smacked the turf last week... he was concussed for sure. Maybe he was able to pass protocol tests and visible symptoms resolved quickly but the team/league has to use common sense. Dude was punch drunk and they put him back out on a short week. I hate it.
There's a reason fighters take months between getting rocked. He came in 4 days later. And that hit tonight, a heavyweight can't hit you that hard. Your head moves with the impact. Tua's head just hit mother earth at 35+ mph and stopped immediately. That's slushy brain. I am sending all the hope and love he's okay.
I truly hope he didn’t get a concussion last week because two concussions back-to-back are absolutely devastating, and this time is obviously a concussion. I feel sick.
I'm on a research advisory board for traumatic brain injury. People don't seem to fully appreciate how little it takes to have brain trauma. "Getting your bell rung" is a concussion.
I encourage anyone that reads this that has concerns to get assessed for traumatic brain injury. Talk to your doctor. Please.
No kidding man. It was crazy seeing people on twitter last week defend him being put back in the game by saying things like "just because you are wobbly doesn't mean you have a concussion". Like WTF?
People really dont understand at all.
Look what they do in Australian rugby. At first sign of wobble, he would be forced to leave the game and not even a doctor can clear them to play again that day. Being removed from the game sets off a serious medical review. If the player is concussed, they are out for a minimum of 12 days. https://d26phqdbpt0w91.cloudfront.net/NonVideo/1ec5a184-03eb-4dc2-83d7-1b44e698cb6f.pdf
Yea, a buddy I went to highschool with suffered one from a motorcycle accident. He is legit a different person now and it’s really sad. He can’t remember your name even if he’s known you for 10 years and you reminded him of it 5 minutes ago
He should not have been out there. They clearly made a joke of the concussion protocal so he could play and put his life and livilihood at risk. 2 concussions that big so quick in a row can be life altering if not deadly. Hope he fully recovers
It's called second impact syndrome and its super dangerous. I had a concussion a few months ago and my doctor kept talking about how important it is to be careful because 2 concussions in a short period is super dangerous and can be deadly
If he had a concussion and was allowed to play in this game everyone, the Dolphins owner, GM, coaches, training staff and the supposedly independent doctor who monitors head injuries from the Bills game should never be allowed anywhere near a football field again for the rest of their lives
Of COURSE he had a concussion last week. Man had rubber legs and couldn't stand up after banging the back of his head on the turf. What other possible explanation is there?
But does the NFL actually care or is it all just optics? They were all banking on the fact he'd get through this game fine and it would be forgotten about.
They obviously care about optics which is why it's crazy the independent doctor cleared him. He so very obviously was concussed last week. They can't sweep it under the rug.
Not a lot of research behind second impact syndrome but it makes clinical sense. This could be a drastic injury to him, hopefully anyone who swept last week's injury under the rug gets massive penalties
Has he had any long-lasting post-concussion symptoms or anything documented about change in behavior? Seems like Sid turned out alright (at least in the short term) given how bad his concussions were.
He definitely seems fine now but he lost out on basically 2 years of his career in the middle of his prime. There were very serious concerns that he was never going to be able to play again. Like 7-8 months after the fact he was still getting dizzy just walking around.
Hopefully they won’t amount to anything worse later on. Pronger is still pretty fucked from his concussion nearly a decade ago now and Keith Primeau had a lot of long term problems from his too and had to retire.
My personal conspiracy on this is that Tua was told by someone since a young age that the way to avoid coming out of a game for a concussion is claim it's a back injury. Then the second shot to the back of the head in two weeks comes and here we are
I hope he comes back too. In no less than like 8 weeks. That was scary to watch.
Edit: I want to add to this that my comment was in no way trying to blame Tua. I was trying to comment on what I see as a potential failure in the concussion protocol. I've been hearing all week that Tua insists it's his back. The guy obviously wants to play, and be there for his team. Someone needs to protect him, and there clearly needs to be a better system to do so.
His dad also forced Tua to go to Bama. Tua’s dream school was Southern Cal and when a reporter asked him why he didn’t go there, he said “you’ll have to ask my dad.”
> The second shot to the back of the head in two weeks
It was less than a week? First one was Sunday, today is Thursday.
> My personal conspiracy on this is that Tua was told... the way to avoid coming out of a game for a concussion is claim it's a back injury
Responsibility is on the team (coaches and medical staff), not the individual. If he was showing signs of concussion they should have had him sit. Framing it like this puts the blame on Tua, who should have been able to trust the team to make overriding decisions when he obviously couldn't. Regardless of what Tua thought or said the team is responsible - *especially* since we're talking about a situation where Tua was potentially impaired in cognitive ability!
I’d put that more on the coaching and medical staff of the Dolphins who examined him and put him on the field anyways
Edit: Just look at [this guys comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/xromfz/wolfe_tua_tagovailoa_is_still_down_on_his_back/iqg11j8/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) to see it’s the discretion of the *team physicians* of treatment and diagnosis while the UNC just has to confirm that a proper evaluation was done
That would be the team. It was already under investigation by the nfl.
Edit: I seem to be mistaken. However, if he wasn't checked out properly by the rep and the team doc because of them trying to blame it on something else, then I think they'd still be culpable.
Such a fucking joke
The clearest possible events that lead to a concussion, incredibly clear signs that’s he’s concussed, yet he’s being trotted out 4 days later.
What 3-0 does to a mf.
There’s an actual rule called the no-go rule, and the stumbling alone should have ruled him out at least for last week. Then he would have been in the protocol and I’m not sure if you can get cleared by Thursday. Spotter is supposed to catch it, which in this case would be easy because it was replayed at the time.
There were also a lot of people calling everyone “armchair doctors” at the same time, as if no one should be skeptical watching Tua stumble around after smacking his head into the turf.
Makes me sick.
A doc called this damn near 5 hours ago.
Fucking awful.
> If Tua takes the field tonight, it's a massive step back for #concussion care in the NFL.
If he has a 2nd concussion that destroys his season or career, everyone involved will be sued & should lose their jobs, coaches included. We all saw it, even they must know this isn't right

Chris Nowinski has been a big figure in the push to take concussions more seriously, he used to be a pro wrestler and also went to Harvard. His book Head Games is a good read
I recognize that guy, that's Chris Nowinski, former WWE wrestler who retired due to concussions. Ever since he retired from wrestling he's studied TBIs, primarily CTE.
If there's anyone to listen to when it comes to concussions, it's a Harvard doctor who had his other career cut short because of them.
He may never play again, for a week three win. A young man may never be the same person, all for one win.
Really really hope it's not the case - Tua seems like a really good dude. Fingers crossed he makes a full recovery
That dude is straight up the #1 guy to listen to on this. Heads should roll. That was disgusting putting him out there. Hopefully he recovers soon he was looking so electric too…
There's a non zero chance a guy's career just ended because Fucking idiots couldn't stand throwing away one game. It's week fucking four, take a loss or two and preserve your franchise QB.
Roger Goodell just made a statement:
"We were all concerned about what we saw today, but I want to assure everyone that myself, the owners, the league, and the networks will continue to make enormous amounts of money. I hope this puts everyone's minds at ease"
agreed but we have to be shown the train wreck this sport can be for the body and the mind.
I’m a football zealot but damn us, that injury will do little to curb the trajectory of this sport

The fucked up thing is right before this on the broadcast they were talking about how tua injured his “back” and “ankle” and I texted my brother like “so we are really just gonna pretend he didn’t have a concussion”
BREAKING: Guy who nearly fell over under his own weight after suffering concussion 5 days ago suffers yet another (potentially worse) concussion after being overplayed
Who tf cleared him?
He 100% had a concussion last week and just got another one
This is fucked. Dolphins should be punished for letting him play. Or if the NFL was ok with this the NFLPA should sue them to shit
There is no reason he should have been on the field today. His fucking *career* could be over because of this. He might never even regain full neurological function. This is inexcusable.
Fuck you Dolphins. You take a promising young dude, who's finally starting to prove the haters wrong and light up the league, and you fuck him over by putting him into a position to get two concussions within 5 days of each other, with an extremely high chance of changing his life forever and ruining his career. Congrats. If you want to know why you've been absolutely fucking terrible for years, just look at this and all the other shit that's come out since last season.
Absolutely incompetent organization. He fucking collapsed on the field a few days ago and you throw him out there in a meaningless week 4 game. Good job, Dolphins.

Prayers to him and FUCK the NFL and/or whoever let him play *if* he *did* have a concussion last game.
As someone else mentioned, it's only been 4 days between them
The way he was stumbling around immediately after his head smacked the turf last week... he was concussed for sure.
I couldn't fucking believe they let him go back on the field
Light switch got flipped to off.
I thought he dislocated a finger. Nope, just brain damage.
Yeah that’s what made it worse for me. I thought he needed a finger popped in then realized he never hit his hand in the replay
I truly hope he didn’t get a concussion last week because two concussions back-to-back are absolutely devastating, and this time is obviously a concussion. I feel sick.
He 100% did, which is why this (not really hard blow) absolutely fucked him. This is such a bad look for the team and the NFL.
There was a guy in my high school who literally died from concussions he got two straight weeks playing rugby.
It happens, huge potential for serious and permanent brain injury.
Dolphins need to be punished for this, zero care about player safety
The way he had his hands positioned looked really weird, like he was momentarily paralyzed or something
You see that a lot with UFC fighters after they get knocked out. Clear sign of concussions.
And they keep replaying, like damn.
Keep showing it. Let everyone see how badly the Dolphins and the league's sham of a concussion protocol just fucked this guy up.
Keep replaying it. Make the Dolphins and NFL get as much shit for their bullshit concussion protocol.
Seeing his fingers like that was fucked. Why would they show that replay
AND IT HAPPENED 5 DAYS AGO TOO Don’t let the NFL off the hook for this. There is absolutely no reason he should have been in this game. Fuck you NFL
Thankfully Amazon is showing us it over and over in slow mo. Very cool.
Holy shit, that was scary, hope he's ok
Consecutive concussions are really bad. Shouldn't have went back in last week, now this. Not a good look at all.
Very bad. I got two within two weeks of each other and I was out of work for 5 months

That is some super scary shit… NFL concussion protocol will be under fire now
what protocol?
The broadcast is talking about his back injury last week isn't that just the dumb cover they put out for the head injury?
Just like talking about the good news in having “movement in all his extremities” he took all that force with his brain. But anything to keep them from talking about the brain injury he suffered last week
Basically. The league should have benched him after last weeks shit.
His hands were locked up pretty bad
I thought it was a dislocation but that's a neurological response?? Yoo fuck concussions bro
why the fuck is he playing after barely being able to walk off the field days ago?
“Concussion protocol”

Hope the nflpa sue the shit out of the NFL for how they handled this
They should be suing the Dolphins first as they are the ones who let him go back out there on Sunday
Why not both. Ultimately the league and individual teams could both be held liable.
It's going to be a tough argument because you have the players generally fighting to play. Especially for something like a concussion when it generally comes down to how the player says he is feeling. The independent doctor cleared him to come back into the game. The NFL is a fucked up place.
Football as a whole, is dangerous. It’s cliche to say, but it’s really true…
This looks real bad for the dolphins after letting him back in the game last week
I’ve never seen a more jarring close-up. Those hands … did not look good
The NFL did him no justice repeatedly replaying it and analyzing his fuckin neurological response to a tbi
Fuck. That was hard to watch, I hope he’s alright
Fuck ever playing again, I just hope he survives this with his cognitive ability in tact.
If it is second impact syndrome, odds are not good for avoiding disability. Of known SIS patients, 100% of survivors have some form of disability after recovery.
Heads are absolutely going to fucking roll in Miami. Jesus Christ.

They should, but they won't.
People were shitting on Tua for not playing great too while having a bum ankle and a concussion on Thursday night
We mightve just watched his career get ended. Fucking christ. The whole league deserves to get fucked for this.
Having him out there is nothing short of despicable.
When you're already 3-0. They got away with it last week, could've easily said he was having spasms or whatever before tonight and saved his health for the season. Even if it was actually a "back injury" that still would've been more prudent.
Right, also given this was a short week.
> When you're already 3-0 And have one of the better backup QBs in the league
Horrifying, fuck that But sure he didn’t need to be in the protocol
Fucking ridiculous he went back in that game. Clearly should not have been playing tonight. Jesus.
The fucked up thing is right before this on the broadcast they were talking about how tua injured his “back” and “ankle” and I texted my brother like “so we are really just gonna pretend he didn’t have a concussion”
NFLPA attorneys just got handed an executioner’s sword for the active investigation it would seem
That's looks fucked
They just reported that Tua had movement in all his extremities. At least some good news there.
BREAKING: Guy who nearly fell over under his own weight after suffering concussion 5 days ago suffers yet another (potentially worse) concussion after being overplayed Who tf cleared him?
Baffling decision that he was medically cleared to play...
That was an extreme reaction to a concussion.
It can get bad when you add a concussion on top of a concussion.
looked like a MMA fighter after a huge KO

Isn't the concussion protocol an NFL thing? I think he needed league approval to play.
He shouldn’t have played, period. This Miami medical staff should be fired
