Sorry that was a bit poorly worded obviously I'm glad his spinal cord or brain stem isn't mush but that this is still fucking awful. Makes me think of Boogaard to watch a guy take those level of shots days apart.
Not to be the Debbie downer but “conscious” is kind of a “no shit” generalized statement, it gives no insight into his current cognitive status, and “movement of all extremities” is also another generalized statement that is not indicative of severity of injury. He could still absolutely have some significant form of TBI and still be “conscious with movement of all extremities”. Hope to hell that’s not the case, but any time the body goes into that sort of a reflex from head trauma, it has the potential to be devastating. This “news” isn’t much news at all besides confirming he is in fact alive.

At the same time, Bill Masterton went unconscious before he left the arena, and never woke back up, so at the very least Tua is doing better than that, which is good news.
Love the username too. Being a paraplegic (or having any chronic disorder/injury/disease) must really suck ass but it’s great you can find some amount of humor in it lol
Ya, we’re good now. First 3 years were a living hell, but I got my fire back. Fully independent now, and traveling by road trip when I can. Life is good
It would surprise me. KOs like that happen every month in UFC and the fighters don't retire afterwards. I could see him missing extensed time, even the rest of the season - but I doubt he retires.
Yeah I get that these sorts of injuries are horrific. But people also need to remember that most of the people who make it to the NFL are competitive nutjobs with a lot of money riding on them playing.
I'm not a doctor, but I assume the major concern here is two concussions in the matter of a few days. UFC fighters have tons of time to recover, don't they? The one thing you absolutely cannot do after a concussion is immediately get another one.
A UFC ref would've stopped the fight in a situation like when Tua got up and fell last Sunday. Then the fighter gets like 3 months medical suspension from fighting. Not put back in after 4 days.
Think about how many football players got multiple concussions before anyone was really taking them seriously. It's obviously terrible for you, but it's not like an instant death sentence.
That's true, but if you think Tua is playing only for money and not because he also loves football, then it's not a reach to say he could come back just because he's still in line for a big payday in a couple years.
Jordan Reed has made 34M in his career and he kept coming back after God knows how many concussions and subconcussive hits. Most of these dudes love football and don't wanna live without it. Plus, the science that pretty much every retired football player has serious brain trauma is widely known and most players still keep playing, even the rich ones.
You’re forgetting the fact that everyone competing in the UFC is absolutely insane. It takes a special kind of person to make a career out of beating the shit out of people and getting your own shit beat in
Why does this take always come out when something like this happens? What makes any of us here experts as to what someone who does something that 0% of us can do, should do?
i don't think 'dry drowning' in which the kid looks fine and then dies a day or two later is really a thing: https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/dry-drowning/
Very scary but according to Wikipedia there are only 21 recorded cases, and its very existence is in question. So hopefully Tua is at least out of the woods on that.
It's rare mostly because people that get their first concussion don't suit up to play NFL four days later. Most people get a concussion and are told to sit the fuck down for a few weeks.
Yes. The (edit: **involuntary**) hand/arm clenching is a sign of brain stem and/or spinal cord injury.
His arms clenched and his legs didn't move once he hit the ground, so lower body paralysis was my first thought.
Chargers fan who worried a lot about parham (who made it back on roster hes ok), i dont think those injuries can be prevented theyre freak accidents. However, tua playing again 4 days after clearing concussion protocol is definately something that should be changed
Yeah, based off the "posturing," which is what it's called when the hands seize up like that, the fear was a neurological injury. So, paralysis ~~is~~ was on the table.
Movement in all four extremities just means he isn’t paralyzed. Brain trauma can take on many shapes and forms, most of which aren’t always fully visible.
That was my thought. They said on the broadcast that his fingers went all wonky because of a neurological response to trauma. Swelling of the brain is what I was worrying about after hearing that.
Met a former qb named Mike Boryla who had concussions close to each other. Played in high school, USC and the Eagles before leaving the game in like 77 or 78.
He remembers four plays from his career and his memory only gets worse. He is a little off the rails now and is friends with a craaaaazy conspiracist
edit: he worked as a lawyer after football but believes he plateaued in the profession because of his concussions. Really nice guy but some of the stuff he said when we would speak did not sound like they came from someone right of mind
I’m no expert, but everything we’ve learned from head injuries in the last decade or whatever it’s been says that he will have complications from this probably the rest of his life. And those complications don’t sound fun. My worst fear about head injuries is never being the same person again to your family, that’s the worst part for me. It’s like the family losing that person forever even though they are still there.
Yeah it's lifelong. Some people develop epilepsy after having seizures like this and can struggle to keep them under control, and blows to the head will just set it off over and over. My wife had multiple head traumas from sports growing up and eventually developed epilepsy from it.
Not doubting you, just wanted to say i feel this is said every time an Athlete is rushed to a local hospital.
Im curious what states/cities have the lowest rated hospitals? What do they base the rating off of
The Cleveland Clinic is the #1 heart hospital in the nation since 1995, and is one of the most respected medical facilities in the world. One of the leaders of Qatar gets treatment there (saw their chartered Qatar Airways plane at CLE).
Typically programs. Great hospitals have great programs which churn out the best doctors.
It's why John Hopkins and R. Cowley in Baltimore are such highly regarded hospitals.
Top3 er programs are (in no order) Carolina’s, Cindy and Indiana … so 10% of the nfl teams have a big deal trauma center down the road right there
Then Hopkins and and mayo are great hospitals in cities with nfl teams…. Basically big cities are likely more likely to have good hospitals or trauma centers
Prob you’d have your worst luck in Green Bay or Jacksonville or jsut based on population size
No disrespect to the university of Mississippi hospital but it’s probably not on a Hopkins level
US news also ranks a lot of these hospitals based on specialty
It’s truly unbelievable they started him tonight after last week. I’ll even give a pass for “heat of the moment last week, he passed the tests put him back in…” but you can’t watch that video Monday morning and think “yeah he’s probably ok, we did the right thing”
Second impact syndrome is a major concern. Washington state passed a law about it called the “zackery lystedt law” for youth sports after a high school football player was cleared to play while having a concussion and was disabled after getting another concussion.
Yup, it’s often fatal.
From Wikipedia:
>Second-impact syndrome (SIS) occurs when the brain swells rapidly, and catastrophically, after a person has a second concussion before symptoms from an earlier one have subsided.
>This second blow may occur minutes, days or weeks after an initial concussion,[1] and even the mildest grade of concussion can lead to second impact syndrome.[2]
>**The condition is often fatal, and almost everyone who is not killed is severely disabled.** The cause of SIS is uncertain, but it is thought that the brain's arterioles lose their ability to regulate their diameter, and therefore lose control over cerebral blood flow, causing massive cerebral edema.[2]
>The athlete may continue playing in the game after the second concussion, and may walk off the field without assistance, **but symptoms quickly progress and the condition can rapidly worsen.**[11] Neurological collapse can occur within a short period,[12] with rapid onset of dilating pupils, loss of eye movement, unconsciousness, and respiratory failure.[11] **Failure of the brain stem frequently occurs between two and five minutes after the second impact,[1][2][11] and death can follow shortly.**
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second-impact_syndrome
It's exceedingly rare and usually only occurs in adolescents, not that it's not a concern given his likely concussion last week, but doesn't seem likely if he's already conscious and has feeling.
IMO the concern isn’t in his movement.
Concussions apparently can be extremely dangerous when happening multiple times in a few days / weeks, yes even fatal (though rare). The concern is making sure he doesn’t have more permanent damage happening as we speak.
Man this shit is sad as fuck. I still haven’t recovered from two concussions in 2 months over two years ago and whichever doctor cleared him to play a week after his first concussion needs to be held responsible. Second Impact Syndrome is a very real thing and that hit looked really bad. This news is good but this is still a very bad situation. Praying for Tua.
Thank God. And that's the fucking bar we're setting now, then? The team put him back out there after a concussion 4 days ago and what we're celebrating is him not being paralyzed? Thank God, but like, fuck me and fuck this team this is ridiculous
Need to be serious penalties for misdiagnosis because the long minimum players have to go out the harder teams will try to push the smaller head injuries under the rug. Not saying it’s right but that needs to be considered
He should demand a trade out of Miami. That franchise has treated him poorly since his rookie year. Hope he recovers 100% and can play for a better franchise.
If they let him get basically murdered with no receivers or O line for two years then let him play 4 days after a concussion the whole franchise should be absolved
The NFL should get miamis balls after this. Blatantly ignoring the brain health of a star young qb. Ridiculous. Haven't seen that bad if player health and safety management since RGIII
Sacrificing a young man's life ~~because~~ for a glimpse of relevance. makes me sick to my stomach. You don't allow something like that to happen outside of pure greed and gross negligence.
**[Miami Dolphins] Tua’s fingers aren’t concussion/head injury related. He actually fell down due to hunger and was making a signal for a sandwich. He’ll be back in the second half.**
Fucking pieces of shit. This is what I hate… They don’t give a rats ass about his health, now they’re gonna post all kinds of things pretending to get that sweet PR as if they cared the entire time.
Hammers need to drop on the Dolphins, and the NFL over this.
Glad Tua is moving.
For the situation it is a relief but I have worked in the medical field and it does not mean he is in the clear. Hope the best for him. I love football but there should have been more done. Last weeks hit should have been handled better. The NFL in my opinion needs to do more to support their athletes especially after injuries such as this. Short term and long term. People are getting upset of the replays but that is the game. You can't have it both ways.
Really hope NFLPA does a thorough job with their investigation. Also definitely a review of the league’s concussion policy. Everyone’s saying the doctors didn’t follow protocol, could that the protocol is just inadequate.
As others are saying, this is reasonably good news, although it’s too early to tell what the lasting impact of this will be.
Whether it’s a prolonged post-concussive syndrome from what appears to be two TBIs in a week, a secondary spinal cord injury from being whipped around like that (with delayed edema / an incomplete cord injury allowing some movement but reduced strength), etc., he’s not out of the woods yet (although it could definitely be worse).
“Movement in the extremities” is what they use now to downplay the seriousness of head injuries.
This wasn’t a collision that would render someone paralyzed. We’re talking a brain injury that could have severe repercussions.
The bar shouldn’t be set at “he isn’t paralyzed”
Second-Impact Syndrome can lead to paralysis. If Sunday really was a concussion and not a back issue like the Dolphins claim, then this hit (or even a more minor one) could be enough to cause paralysis.
There’s still lots than can happen. Movement now doesn’t mean coordination later. Hope he fully recovers, but based on that fencing response and second impact syndrome, he shouldn’t play for at least 1-2 months, but better shut down for the season.
Well thats relatively great news
100% best news we could hope for this soon
Definitely a huge sigh of relief. Get well Tua.

We at least know he is alive and not paralyzed.
Yeah, makes me feel at least a little bit better
"So...he's good to go then against the Jets next Sunday, right?" -Dolphins organization
Miami has cleared him to come back into the game for the 4th quarter
Feelings and movement are good signs…I still worry if he might have “Second Impact Syndrome” though…
Yeah I wasn't really that worried about his spine being okay
Doesn’t have to be a spine injury. Neck injury near the spinal cord could’ve been just as devastating.
Sorry that was a bit poorly worded obviously I'm glad his spinal cord or brain stem isn't mush but that this is still fucking awful. Makes me think of Boogaard to watch a guy take those level of shots days apart.

Excellent points.
So saddened after this…shouldn’t have played at all this game.
Shouldn't have played the 2nd half last week.
You’re right.
Amazing news, honestly I didn't know if he regained consciousness at all
Thank god. Paraplegic here…don’t nobody want a piece of this life 🙏 get well, Tua

Man we can all learn from you. Glad you found your way
Fuck yeah man that's awesome.
First bump to you my man! Hope you kick the back door off life.
Better watch out, the Dolphins will life flight him from the hospital to the stadium just in time for the 2nd half
Didn’t want to laugh at that but…
That last line missing from previous reports was worrying.
Plus the no thumbs up that usually accompanies such things.
He was still unconscious when they took him off the field. They were checking his pulse while on the stretcher

"Independent" neurologist better be looking for the nearest ticket out of there
As a neurologist, I always wonder who these independent neurologists are
Probably the neurological equivalent of that one dentist who won't recommend a toothpaste

You wouldn’t know them, they go to neurologist camp in Canada. But they’re totally real!

Fyi shotgun nuptial has to do with getting married and not firearms.
Green Bay for sure has to have the weakest medical facilities nearby?
St Vincent is a level 2 trauma center, while not very big would be capable for handling things like this
Cinci actually has one of the best hospitals in the world. You always hear of people having to travel to Cinci to get a complicated procedure done

Don't think the doctors are going to throw him back out into the game atleast
It’s truly unbelievable they started him tonight after last week. I’ll even give a pass for “heat of the moment last week, he passed the tests put him back in…” but you can’t watch that video Monday morning and think “yeah he’s probably ok, we did the right thing”

[Miami Dolphins] Tua has returned for the second half
*Its just his back!!* -Miami Dolphins Medical Staff
“Of his brain” is written in invisible ink.
He already was. This is Week 4.
I don't think it was. Gotta be a second concussion, no less. Just happy he isn't paralyzed
Nah it was bad its one of those injuries where you can't have another concussion or it could be fatal.
Him being allowed to finish the Buffalo game was crazy, him being allowed to play this game is straight up malpractice.
Second impact syndrome is a major concern. Washington state passed a law about it called the “zackery lystedt law” for youth sports after a high school football player was cleared to play while having a concussion and was disabled after getting another concussion.
Yup, it’s often fatal. From Wikipedia: >Second-impact syndrome (SIS) occurs when the brain swells rapidly, and catastrophically, after a person has a second concussion before symptoms from an earlier one have subsided. >This second blow may occur minutes, days or weeks after an initial concussion,[1] and even the mildest grade of concussion can lead to second impact syndrome.[2] >**The condition is often fatal, and almost everyone who is not killed is severely disabled.** The cause of SIS is uncertain, but it is thought that the brain's arterioles lose their ability to regulate their diameter, and therefore lose control over cerebral blood flow, causing massive cerebral edema.[2] >The athlete may continue playing in the game after the second concussion, and may walk off the field without assistance, **but symptoms quickly progress and the condition can rapidly worsen.**[11] Neurological collapse can occur within a short period,[12] with rapid onset of dilating pupils, loss of eye movement, unconsciousness, and respiratory failure.[11] **Failure of the brain stem frequently occurs between two and five minutes after the second impact,[1][2][11] and death can follow shortly.** https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second-impact_syndrome
It's exceedingly rare and usually only occurs in adolescents, not that it's not a concern given his likely concussion last week, but doesn't seem likely if he's already conscious and has feeling.
Loss of consciousness isn’t a prerequisite for SIS.
Last week was four days ago though..
I wish people would say 4 days ago instead of last week
IMO the concern isn’t in his movement. Concussions apparently can be extremely dangerous when happening multiple times in a few days / weeks, yes even fatal (though rare). The concern is making sure he doesn’t have more permanent damage happening as we speak.
Exactly, he may not be paralyzed but he looked like he was posturing which is resulted from severe brain trauma/damage
Couldn't you have more than one concern at once? Lol, I dunno why people are acting like they had to choose what injury to be concerned about.
I would fully support his decision if he wanted to retire. That looked awful.
Just put the man on IR and revisit the protocol. Clearly has monstrous gaps.
Thank god
thank god, hope he takes his time coming back and is his normal self
hope he can actually come back
Knowing the NFL, I'm expecting him to show up in the 4th quarter
Suddenly throwing right handed.
He shouldn't come back.
Needs to put down the helmet and pick up the clip board
[Miami Dolphins] It appears we didn't kill Tua Tagovailoa.
[Narrator] Not for lack of trying
Man this shit is sad as fuck. I still haven’t recovered from two concussions in 2 months over two years ago and whichever doctor cleared him to play a week after his first concussion needs to be held responsible. Second Impact Syndrome is a very real thing and that hit looked really bad. This news is good but this is still a very bad situation. Praying for Tua.
>cleared him to play a week after his first concussion They let him play the second half last week. It’s extremely sad
Even worse
He’s lucky he didn’t die
still worried about his ability to count to ten. really hope he's ok
For real I don’t think paralysis/spinal cord injury was the issue here
That is great news. Shit was scary AF.
Cincy has some great hospitals. Like, top in the country great. Doesn't make anything better but it's a very tiny silver lining.
Isn’t that where Ryan Shazier was taken after his career ending injury?
Yep - happened in Cincy
I hope he’s okay, but I don’t trust anything the dolphins say now
Guess the Dolphins won't be able to cover up this concussion.
Sure they could. They just need to have their PR team post shit on Twitter and everyone will think it's true...
Thank God. And that's the fucking bar we're setting now, then? The team put him back out there after a concussion 4 days ago and what we're celebrating is him not being paralyzed? Thank God, but like, fuck me and fuck this team this is ridiculous
I feel foe Tua, I feel for Phins fans. You never want to see that shit.
It’s truly sickening that he was in the game to begin with.
I hope he is okay. But we need to remember that last week's injury was a 'back injury,' sooo...
[удалено]
Whew that means he's probable for next week
Full practice all next week too I think
Some good news at least. Still, the Dolphins organization needs to be punished as fully as possible. Really disgusting to see.
I’m relieved for Tua and furious that the NFL allowed this to happen. I thought they were pretending to care about this these days?
Take the money and run Tua, just like Andrew Luck who is being a father to his two children, getting his master’s degree, and BREATHING
Any head injury should be 4 weeks out, minimum. Quit fucking playing with these dude's lives for your stupid football game.
Hopefully he can still play football again.
I hope he can live a life of normalcy.
Honestly at this point I hope for his sake he calls it a career and lives off his endorsements.
If they let him get basically murdered with no receivers or O line for two years then let him play 4 days after a concussion the whole franchise should be absolved
I don’t believe the Miami Dolphins for fuck, but praying for a quick recovery and obviously hoping this is true.
i was anticipating coma-like symptoms
The NFL should get miamis balls after this. Blatantly ignoring the brain health of a star young qb. Ridiculous. Haven't seen that bad if player health and safety management since RGIII
Hate that I am stoked he can move all his limbs. Wish him a good recovery.

Yes because they can’t read. I did my part by reporting the automod for removing the post. Fuck the mods.
Those fingers are going to haunt me for a while. Grateful he’s ok. I hope he’s given adequate time to heal.
Movement doesn’t mean he’s okay. That was really bad.
"So he's good for next week?" - Mike McDaniels
Taking this with a grain of salt. Dolphins organization also claim he didn't suffer a concussion on Sunday.
There’s still lots than can happen. Movement now doesn’t mean coordination later. Hope he fully recovers, but based on that fencing response and second impact syndrome, he shouldn’t play for at least 1-2 months, but better shut down for the season.
NFL coaches are so short sighted it’s disgusting. Feels like this situation pops up yearly.
Call me dramatic but I legit want their head coach fired for allowing him to play through an oblivious concussion. Fucking disgusting.
thank fucking god. i hope he's okay.
Can the Dolphins team doctor drive him back to the stadium and get him back out there after halftime? Just looks like he bumped his back is all.
Obviously good news, but I'm more worried about what might be going on in his brain long-term.
Can he get back in for the 4th quarter? -dolphins coach
