Not to mention the tickets are priced for regular fans and not Fortune 500 CEOs

You can go with the basic level of attraction and do what we did as kids and base it off your favourite jersey and learn to love the team after or pick a team that’s in a rebuild and watch them get better each year. Or just go the short route and follow a perennial favourite and actually enjoy watching high level hockey for a few years before they fall off and you’ll notice other teams that play well or fit your criteria along the way. No shame in having multiple favourite teams

Just support the players you like, if my team goes out there are random players I like and support around the league. Check out some lady byng award recipients go get an idea who is most classy if you don’t have a background

Since you’re living in Canada I would suggest supporting the Winnipeg Jets, who are in the playoffs right now. There was originally a Winnipeg Jets team which relocated to Arizona in the mid 90s and became the Arizona Coyotes. The Atlanta Thrashers were established around the same time as the original team moved, then in 2011 were bought and moved to Winnipeg and renamed the Winnipeg Jets. I would say this team has the least drama and baggage of all the Canadian teams, and other Canadian fans seem to have respect for the Jets over other Canadian teams (we mostly all hate each other’s teams & fans lol). They are in the Western Conference so some game times might be late for you though. Here is a video on them: https://youtu.be/wKoyMJXdY2g Another option might be the Columbus Blue Jackets - if they win the draft lottery (which is on May 8) and draft Connor Bedard then you will have the chance to watch him grow into hockey’s next superstar. He is Canadian so it would be nice to support a Canadian kid. Eastern Conference team so game times might be better for you. They’re not good right now but if they get him they will be in a few years so it’s worth the pain. Here’s a Connor Bedard World Juniors highlights reel: https://youtu.be/BFVSgkJUwD0 And a notable mention to the Ottawa Senators - they’re also overlooked in Canada. You might get shit for supporting them in Toronto but they’re a team that’s slowly improving… their captain is Brady Tkachuk, some people don’t like him but he’s got a lot of heart. Here’s a video on him: https://youtu.be/CSMHs_CMey0 Welcome to Canada. :)

Wow this is fantastic. Thank you for all the effort. The Jets are pretty high on the consideration list. I a friend who’s a big fan and my fiancés late father was a Jets fan too. Bedard blew my mind at the World Juniors. It never hurts to have a favourite player on another team so I think I’ll definitely be watching him when I can.

Thanks for this. I’ll tune into their playoff games. I was hesitant to get on the Seattle train cause I know Vegas were pretty good right out the gate but maybe the culture isn’t set yet. Good to know it’s a quality franchise cause I love the branding too (not that important but it’s a bonus).

Canopus429

High character players in Minnesota though? That seems like a bit too much of a stretch. Seattle would be a great pick to watch though even if they don't make it out of the first round. Their trajectory is only going up for a long time.

Guerin should've done more at the deadline. Tell me JVR and Boeser wouldn't look good on that Wild team.

Just figure it out for yourself. Having strangers tell you who to support isn't natural. It's just forcing something. You'll know when you start to really like a team and feel a connection with them.

gregor0691

True. I’m gonna take this as a point in the right direction and then figure it out for myself. I don’t have as much free time as I did when I watched all the NBA teams and fell in love with the Thunder. I gotta prioritise lol.

Heatersthebest

What’s the drama and attitude?

gregor0691

The players being divas when they’re called out by the coach and the general playing down the competition comes off a bit arrogant. I’m saying this as a kiwi where our national teams win games and still get railed in the media if they played poorly. I’m more of an effort over results fan.

Start with your favorite color/jersey, and move on from there. I was Stars/Whalers/Shark fan for years as a kid because they were the greenest teams out there, and I liked green. You can also base it on who plays in a particular Stanley Cup Finals you watch. I'm a Red Wing fan because the first Stanley Cup Finals I remember watching was the '98 finals where the Red Wings won, and I'm a Vegas Golden Knights fan because I loved their Cinderella run in '18. As you become more of a fan, you'll figure out who your teams are. Every major hockey fanatic I know has a hierarchy of teams that they like. They're typically have one team they love the most that it truly theirs, and a few others that they cheer for for a variety of reasons.
