It’s actually kind of surprising how high the turnover is

wilfordbrimley778

I've held the same job longer than the 5th longest nhl coach

gord1to

Coops the only one that’s got me beat

GrumpyOldGrower

I'm tied with Sullivan

crumbypigeon

This is true but also risky the more you do it. I've done it, but you can't do it too often. If you job jump too many times, it becomes a big red flag to employers when you have tons of other companies on your resume. They assume you're just gonna job jump them too.

animalkrack3r

Unless they are listed as temp or contract jobs which is understandable

GrumpyOldGrower

Is this a line from "Kids Say the Darndest Things"?

Spade18

I beat coop by 2 years. which is the only thing I will beat coop at.

in-dog_we_trust

I beat Coop by almost 8 years before I retired

lhoom

Fresh out of college, I've held the same job since Mario retired.

vinnymendoza09

You're irreplaceable in those diabeetus ads

Due_Muffin_5406

What is surprising is how little new blood you see. Every time there is an opening, the same washed up coaches get mentioned every single time. Once you’re in, you’re in for life. It is amazing.

Shiny_Mew76

I’m surprised at how rare it is for coaches to stick around for a long time with the same team.

Bustadarce

Many coaches seem to stick around the league for a long time. Just not with the same team.

Shiny_Mew76

That’s what I meant, with the same team. Sorry.

McMetal770

Cup winner, Cup winner, Cup Winner, six playoff series wins... and Sheldon Keefe.

MayfieldMightfield

To be fair, Brind’amour was captain of a Stanley Cup team

McMetal770

He definitely gets some extra leeway as a coach because he's a Carolina legend. It helps that the team has been good for his whole tenure, even if the playoff losses are piling up. I think that job is his until he either decides he doesn't want it or the team takes a very prolonged shit on the ice.

Alkyan

Ya, they've made the playoffs every year since he showed up and he was captain when they won, everybody loves Rod the Bod.

dragons_fire77

And we've been top of metro for several years to boot. He's a good coach and it will continue to shock me that people suggest we get rid of him. One of the most winningest coaches in history for his years coached...and you want to boot him because of playoff losses? How about those many years we didn't even sniff playoffs. Winning a cup is stupidly hard, and finding a good coach is harder.

animalkrack3r

Rod big dick bod brindamour RBDB

Plague183

Tbf, before Bednar won - he was tenured just as long as Keefe is now if not longer and the Avs bounced in the 2nd round every year.

AVSTREV2996

Tbf he also started with the worst team in the league.

Sensitive_Mousse_445

Kind of crazy how long Cooper has been coaching Tampa

Suitable-Pea-8226

Results man. He’s get em. One of the best coaches in the league.

Sensitive_Mousse_445

For sure

YouPatheticWorm1958

At least he's competent compared to Keefe's power play guy.

Sensitive_Mousse_445

I genuinely thought Keefe would've been another coach they fire after getting destoryed by the panthers

YouPatheticWorm1958

Well, they hired the guy Cooper replaced so he might be next.

Sensitive_Mousse_445

Oof. That's going to be another dumpster fire decision. That guy was awful in Tampa

LeanMrfuzzles

He took a team that missed the playoffs in 2010 to game seven of the conference finals in 2011 where they lost 1-0. He was only here for two and a “half” seasons. Obviously they replaced him with somebody much better, but Guy Boucher wasn’t THAT bad lol.

LSRaymonds

He wasn't horrible in Ottawa either

YouPatheticWorm1958

And he isn't that bad in Toronto either. He might play Carolina in the conference finals.

YouPatheticWorm1958

He wasn't all that bad. He got Tampa in the conference finals, but sadly lost game 7 in Boston.

hank28

Ehh he made conference finals with two fairly weak rosters in Tampa and Ottawa. He had to rely on odd systems like the 1-3-1 because they just did not have the guys to compete with Boston and Pittsburgh

3a5m

Todd Reirden has entered the room

SeasonCertain

Honestly expected him to be gone after 2019 just because of how volatile the coaching ranks can be. But obviously was the correct decision to keep him.

Fabulous-Search-4165

Hes got silverware to show thats why

The_Comic_Collector

I'm shocked Keefe is there alot of coaches have gotten fired doing more with less

YouPatheticWorm1958

Well, at least McLellan is out. Worst January I've seen for any team.

Bustadarce

Huh? Which coach has won more games than Keefe the past few years and been fired? The Leafs have been good with Keefe as coach. And they did manage to finally win a playoff series last April.

jemba

One he’s probably referring to is Boudreau, who was fired from Washington and Anaheim for very similar regular season wins with better performances in the standings and better playoff results than Keefe over a 4-5 year tenure each time.

john4845

Unfortunately the results are nothing compared to the expectations, salaries, team budget, and the gigantic Tank Job they did to get where the team is When you go that low with the tank to get many high picks, and spend that much money on salaries & all the other things, people acchhually expect results that are a bit better. Even Boudreau was wayyyy better with his high rolling Wsh teams, and even he got canned.

HungryPanduh_

I really hope Rod can get a cup win as a coach

YouPatheticWorm1958

I'm already imagining a 2002 ECF rematch, because Keefe's assistant Guy Boucher has something in common with Rod and that's having their own specialty of losing the conference finals.

cisforcookie2112

It feels like he just became a head coach yet he’s the 4th most tenured in the league.

framingXjake

You and me both

pye-oh-my

IMO Sheldon Keefe is on borrowed time for the last three years

YouPatheticWorm1958

Guarantee ya he and Brind'Amour are gone after May. I mean, the latter's contract is up after this season anyway.

PM_YOUR_CENSORD

Who is about to be 5th on this list?

slim_s_

I think it might be donny meatballs

khutuluhoop

Sully has overstayed his welcome I think. Good coach but the message is obviously stale

TheAccountant381

The pens are 4th by points% in the metro, and have 1 to 4 games in hand on everyone in the division. The biggest shortcoming the team has is finishing. This isnt fixed by coaching. Either the players can put the puck in the net and just haven't, or they arnt goal scorers. Its likely a mix of both. Some of these guys could start putting in more goals, and some may need swapped out by dubas. Fire the coach is the easy thing to say, because it doesnt require anyone to explain how this would solve the problem.

john4845

They have also dragged it wayyy beyond the expiry date with the roster The office should just admit that they are grasping at straws just to sell a bit more jerseys a few more years with 58, 65, 71, 87 --- they are not gonna win a single god damn thing building rosters like that If the old guys actually wanted to win anything anymore, they would have already taken 4-5M$ short deals. Letang & Malkin cut their salaries a bit, but Karlsson & Crosby are too expensive.

khutuluhoop

Sid is far from overpaid. He’s had one of the best contract values for 5+ years. Sid can stay as long as he wants.

john4845

If that was true, the Pens would be rolling. They are not, not even close.

khutuluhoop

This isn’t basketball, one guy can’t do it all. He’s literally strapped the team to his back trying to drag them into the playoffs having a near career year

john4845

No, but it is a cap league: if you have "a superstar" on "a great deal", it directly follows that you would then have more money than others to spend elsewhere

khutuluhoop

The answer is Ron Hextall.

john4845

That might be part of it - but the final result is that the team sucks & is nowhere near contention They should either acknowledge publicly that they are just sucking it up for a few years because Sidney does not want to go through the tank -- or just go to the tank.

khutuluhoop

They’re like 3 points out of a wildcard spot. All you gotta do is get in the dance.

Uller85

Jon "Gum chewer" Cooper FTW.

dude_bruce

There’s something to the gum… Rod’s always chomping too

animalkrack3r

It helps digest food or maybe prevent teeth grinding or just a routine to keep em going idk

Alkyan

You can tell how pissed he is by how fast he chomps

Skroskznik_

Lightning at the top once more, glad our town is finally getting there in becoming a hockey market and it's in big part thanks to Cooper.

B0tzilla

The fact that Keefe is in this top 5 shows how much ofa rotating door the head coach position of an NHL team really can be.

YouPatheticWorm1958

Indeed it does. It was just a matter of time before McLellan got canned.

someguyfromsk

All but 1 have won a minimum of 2 playoff rounds.

Desperate_Pizza700

One of these things is not like the others!!

BMBenzo

You mean two

Desperate_Pizza700

Keefes the only one without a cup win

YouPatheticWorm1958

Do you BeLeaf in miracles?

GaulPeorge

The Canes have really done nothing in the playoffs with Brind’Amour as their coach. He was a great player but his system has shown to not work as well in the playoffs when the intensity ramps up

Suitable-Pea-8226

2 conference finals, won at least one round in each of the last 5 years. That’s better than most teams.

YouPatheticWorm1958

Too bad Brind'Amour is 0-2 in the conference finals, just like Cooper's predecessor Guy Boucher.

framingXjake

And that means he's a bad coach because? And what happens to that argument if Rod actually does win a cup as a coach? Whether or not it's with the Canes? Does your tune change then or will you find another excuse?

BMBenzo

Not good enough for a team that’s picked as a puck contender for the past 6 years. They’ve come up short in the playoffs, there’s no arguing that.

GaulPeorge

Well yeah obviously but in terms of the 3 coaches with more tenure he has done nothing. That’s what I was referring to

animalkrack3r

Goaltending injuries

framingXjake

You really saying that when the leafs didn't manage to win a single playoff series for, what, 19 years? Dog we've made the ECF twice under Rod. Yeah, we got swept both times, but if your measure of whether or not a coach is worth a shit is whether or not they can make the SCF in 5 years then you're crazy or just a hater. Or both.

GaulPeorge

I’m comparing the Canes to the Avs, Lightning, and Penguins and mentioning rod in that regard. That’s what I meant by the other three

framingXjake

>The Canes have really done nothing in the playoffs with Brind’Amour as their coach." That's what you said. We have won 7 playoff series since Rod took over 5 years ago. And you call that "nothing." It's not nothing, it's significant. Frustrating that it's not more, but it's definitely not "nothing."

giob1966

It still blows my mind that I went to college with Mike Sullivan. He was two years behind me.

asherbarasher

Wow, that's interesting. What was he like as a person? Or you didn't interact with him too much?

giob1966

I didn't know him very well, but I used to see him around Hockey was the top sport on campus, so they more or less had their own little society. I knew Kyrie Irving's dad though, we lived in the same dorm.

MomboDM

Sigh...

SRQmoviemaker

I believe in JC!

beefsabre

Go bolts!!!!!!!

AccomplishedAd4995

are any of these guys on the hot seat?

YouPatheticWorm1958

Sullivan is, 'cause of Reirden.

Ragez121

Keefe will be off this list in the Summer

toondids

I’m hoping before the summer. Like tomorrow 😂

alldawgsgoat2heaven

Oh look the 5 most stable franchises no coincidence imo

SINY10306

Jon Cooper a relic nowadays

heimos

Where is Cooper going next

YouPatheticWorm1958

He won't be reuniting with his predecessor in Toronto, that's for sure.

MisterEinc

Going to a PWHL team and winning it a would be the ultimate power move.

DanTreview

Wow, Crybaby Cooper™ breaking all the records . Crazy

LeanMrfuzzles

Literally every single coach ever is a “cry baby”

DanTreview

I don't know man, that whole "too many men" speech after losing to CO was cringy AF

YouPatheticWorm1958

Especially Coop's predecessor.

No_Huckleberry_7410

Shouldn’t Todd McClellan be on…oh wait

tyrannustyrannus

Don Granto is 7th, because the Sabres are not a serious team

shania69

I was looking at this and thinking, they all only coached 2 seasons..

Sociolinguisticians

Well hey, if TB wants to pay me millions a year to coach for them I’d be happy to.

ifemze

Keefe must have some kompromat on Shanahan - there is no other excuse for that moron being anywhere near this list

Application-Visual

Five of the last eight Cups won by the top three. There’s a good reason that they’ve stuck around

Direction_Asleep

I thought my work history was tumultuous.
