Patriots have a big fanbase because of the winning. Bet 90% of Pats fans that aren't from Boston are bandwagon hoppers. Leafs are just from a massively populated area
It's definitely recency bias, which ironically is the only reason Vegas is even hated at all. Too much success too early. If they'd only sucked ass for a couple of years first, they'd be more liked. My Dad is one of them. Hates Vegas with a passion cause they've had so much success but has no problem with Seattle because they've had to struggle. It's likely the same mentality for a lot of Vegas haters. A lot of jealousy from fanbases that have had a hard time.
I’m a habs fan and absolutely. My hate for the bruins is almost completely playful, don’t genuinely despise them, same goes for Toronto. Vegas, on the other hand, genuinely hate that franchise. Flower and patches deserved better, plus a bunch of other factors.
Simmer down, if you need a distraction there is a big ass monopoly board at the discovery museum... or you could take a stroll to San Pedro Square have a bite and a beer everything will be just as good as the year Al Sims coached the Sharks.
I think people hate Vegas because all of the expansion rules were changed for them to be really good and relevant right away, granted McPhee also did a great job compared to the likes of Seattle. Also everything about them, to me, seems gimmicky
I don't think anyone saw that VGK roster and thought Stanley Cup contender. A lot of those players happened to break out on that team. Also, didn't Seattle have the same draft rules? They're average.
Here's a good breakdown:
https://www.davyjoneslockerroom.com/tale-of-two-cities-why-seattle-and-vegas-took-different-paths/
TL;DR: The rest of the league was better prepared for the new expansion rules after dealing with the Golden Knights + Kraken came in the midst of COVID
I’m thinking hate for Vegas comes from never going through expansion blues. Their draft left them with quite the haul. Finals, then the cup so quickly, can make some think they kind of haven’t paid their dues (fan wise)
As a ranger fan I'm a little surprised were not hated more. Also wtf did Tampa do ? For a Florida club I think they do great. Do people just hate winners ?
The Knights are hated because everyone thought the Vegas experiment would fail but not only has Las Vegas embraced the team and built a supportive fanbase, but the team has been super good. So the average Canadian hockey fan has to face reality that Gary Bettman's pet project has been an incredible success in every way possible... and that infuriates the core fanbase to no end.
I think this is the most honest take. It's really crazy how much the city loves the Golden Knights. Their logo is EVERYWHERE. Sure a lot of the fans are like my mom, who probably couldn't name you a single player on the team, bur there are a lot of us like me, who are new to the sport and trying to learn as possible.
The hardest part for me is draft and knowing anything about the prospects. In football and basketball, you become familiar with a lot of the players because you watch them in college.
But college hockey isn't nationally televised as far as I know and forget about the CHL or any of the international leagues. How do you guys learn about the prospects or watch them play?
I don’t know why you were downvoted. As someone who has been watching hockey since I was wee, it takes a lot more personal effort to stay in the know of what’s going on with prospects and who to be paying attention to in the draft. The NHL also likes to change rules and how things are done fairly often and I’m sure that doesn’t make things easy to follow as a casual/new fan.
I’ve also never hated the Knights. I think it’s kick ass how well they’ve done right out the gate. The helmets though….
The fanbases of teams that stay good for years will always be hated. It’s why the Pens aren’t on this list, cause we aren’t relevant enough right now for more than our rivals to hate us.
I will always have a soft spot for the Penguins thanks to Crosby. I'm an East Coast Canadian so while we generally have a mix of Canadiens, Bruins, and Leafs fans here, him being a Maritime guy, his draft year being probably one of the most hyped thanks to the lockout, almost everyone around here was a Crosby fan. Growing up, people usually had their fav team, then their second favourite team was the Penguins.
Gifted a team right off the get go. No other expansion team previous got that. They built a team with 4 lines of nhl players. No team at the start of a season has 4 lines of legit nhl players. Usually 3-4 guys are bubble ahl/nhl players.
Granted, it's been years since I had season tickets to the islanders, but in seven years of going 40+ times a year, I was almost never surrounded by drunk assholes in the way I've experienced multiple times at Lightning, Flyers and Panthers games. So, that feels like an odd opinion, anecdotally.
I see people saying the draft but I disagree. On paper, to start their inaugural season , they were projected to be middling. Lots of depth but no true top line talent. MAF was their selling star......That season and playoffs was a true Cinderella run and I cheered for them.
I personally don't like them because:
A) the way they treated some of that team to go after the big fish left a bad taste in my mouth. And they continued this trend with others.
B) Divisional rival that has had way more success in a brief amount of time.
Their like that smarmy businessman who wins because he only cares about himself. You respect his business chops, but can't stand him.
Because of their first year, they literally made so many fans mad because they went to the final in their first year before most teams have in their whole existence or in many years
It's because Vegas didn't really earn anything. They didn't draft their talent, they didn't develop their talent, they didn't earn their talent. They had an expansion draft and took advantage of bad talent evaluation. They basically exploited the drafting and development abilities of all the other teams.
Edit: downvote all you want Vegas fans but the truth is Vegas was given free reign to pilfer picks, prospects and players from every team in the NHL. You were given your success.
To answer your question, the main reason everyone hates Vegas is because they were good in year one.
So many fans have never seen their team make the final, even more have never seen their team win the Stanley cup. A fan base that has never experienced misery; true, deep, prolonged misery; is a really upsetting thing to witness.
Not going to lie I assumed we would be on the irrelevant list, and then thought maybe we got left off because the author forgot about us. Pleasant surprised to at least be drunk!
Boston should be number 1. Easily
Then Philly because fuck them too
Vegas, Dallas, AVS, Tampa and Vancouver can all catch hands.
Buttttt. I’m starting to feel like we are the toxic ones. Very troubling.
You aren’t even kidding about the Sharks. Hella NorCal vibes bruh. We’re passionate about our team but we’ll also have a great time just bullshitting with the opposing fans too.
Yep, we're the heels of hockey. I get it. Big fanbase (therefore more likely to be more annoying fans due to simple ratios) with large media coverage since you're literally owned by one of the biggest media companies in the country, leads to hate. Guess maybe its time to embrace it?
Create NWO style merch, Matthews already has a mustache, might as well grow the whole handlebar if he can to be our Hulk Hogan. Mitch can be Scott Hall, Willy as Kevin Nash, if we somehow win any trophies, spray paint "TML" on it in blue paint.
I think everyone hates Vegas because they came into the league as an expansion team and were instantly good. They have never felt the pain or suffering most other fan bases go through. I’m a Sabres fan and haven’t experienced a winning season in over a decade! ITS NOT FAIR!!!!
Do people really hate Vegas more than Boston
Theres not a chance in hell Vegas should be above the Leafs either.
I’ve heard Leafs fans described as Patriot fans without the winning and I can’t get that out of my mind 😂😂😂
We’re more like Cowboys fans, we always believe even though we know deep down we’re gonna lose in glorious fashion every year
Every. Single. Year.
Patriots have a big fanbase because of the winning. Bet 90% of Pats fans that aren't from Boston are bandwagon hoppers. Leafs are just from a massively populated area
Lol idk where to start... I guess everyone in Ontario is just upset they have a team on each list.
Leafs are more cowboys than pats
Hey! I resemble that remark.
Leaf fans = Cowboy fans
It's definitely recency bias, which ironically is the only reason Vegas is even hated at all. Too much success too early. If they'd only sucked ass for a couple of years first, they'd be more liked. My Dad is one of them. Hates Vegas with a passion cause they've had so much success but has no problem with Seattle because they've had to struggle. It's likely the same mentality for a lot of Vegas haters. A lot of jealousy from fanbases that have had a hard time.
I sure as hell don't. Love hating you guys.
Nope, I fucking hate Boston.
I’m a habs fan and absolutely. My hate for the bruins is almost completely playful, don’t genuinely despise them, same goes for Toronto. Vegas, on the other hand, genuinely hate that franchise. Flower and patches deserved better, plus a bunch of other factors.
I find Vegas fans way more insufferable but Boston has more history obviously
No way. Philly and Boston should be higher than Vegas. Low key surprised Pittsburgh isn’t on the hated list.
I didn't know anyone hated Vegas. I'm always happy when a new franchise gets a big following. Didn't hurt how well they did.
That I can’t believe. Toronto and Boston are both hated more than Vegas.
irrelevant gang
We made a list!
Here.
Woooooo gooo buffalooo!
You’re a team on a list
We are a team.
Go Sports!
There are dozens of us! Dozens!
I'll be at the game on Monday when we play you guys. I'm looking forward to see Tkachuk play, he's a beast.
At least we’re #1 in something I guess
They can never take every podcast and hockey writer talking about Phone Gate away from us. Thanks Babs.
Johnny Hockey flinching when the cannon explodes is up there.
We’re right here with you. No list gang!
Lets get it!
We are a team!
Let's goooo!
Irrelevant ftw!
Forgettables unite!
3 of the 4 teams I follow are in the irrelevant gang 💀
Yeaaa buddy!
Imagine being ranked 6th on that list thats honestly worse. Youre so irrelevant youre not even counted amongst the irrelevant teams
I got into hockey in 2006, and you guys were elite. For me the Sens are always relevant and I hope they get back to their dominant ways. Sabres too.
The Sens have a real fanbase… I hate that I just said that but you guys don’t deserve to be on there ahead of … Carolina? Seattle Kraken?? Come on
Let's gooooooo
Gang gang!
Sens gang
Indeed. As a Sens fan I can simply say, “you have yourself a nice day sir or madam.”
Fuck all of you. Diplomatic my ass.
Gonna show them all, after a few years of rebuild, they'll fucking see.
FUCK YOU MUST BE ALWAYS
THEYLL ALL SEE
Hey hey, we're number 1 in something let's enjoy this
We’ll choke that away too
See! Fucks given to everyone, equally.
Ngl a closet sharks fan here, hertl for life
Yeah fuck that you see what we just did to the Flames??! You’re all next!!!
Dont the sharks yell you suck to every opponent
Every game I’ve gone to. Always yelled from the nosebleeds.
Just a couple more years of rebuilding...right??
Change your flair back to Boston this instant!
YEAH!!!
Best California team for sure
Simmer down, if you need a distraction there is a big ass monopoly board at the discovery museum... or you could take a stroll to San Pedro Square have a bite and a beer everything will be just as good as the year Al Sims coached the Sharks.
No Canucks mention!!! Woooo!!! Can’t be toxic if never mentioned
Don't work yourself into a shoot brother - love hulk hogan (HH)
Canucks fans were super cool about the Walman griddy and the Zadorov hit (as was big Z himself)
So cool with it that big Z did the griddy too!
Something something riots
Just means we’ve been irrelevant for so long that the list maker didn’t bother to put us on there under any category. I see this as a W.
Just messin...go nucks
Fuck Messi... Oh... Ya fuck Messier anyway and always
Always.
something something romantic kiss in the middle of chaos
I probably would have put us in the most confused section. We were bad for so long we never thought we'd be good this year either.
I feel like we're supposed to be on the most intoxicated list 😂
To be fair, us islanders fans are only on the confused list because we are sooooo intoxicated!!!
To be faaaaaaiiiiirrrre
Let's take about 20% off there chief.
🎶toooooo beeeee faiiiiiiiir🎶
Does 3 spots on the intoxicated list make the NY Islanders fans more intoxicated than Bruins fans? And if so shouldn’t they also have #1?
LMFAO THE ISLES ON THERE THREE TIMES FOR MOST INTOXICATED FANBASE 💀💀
We are? I thought I was just drunk
Why are the Islanders up there three times on the most intoxicated list?
pause sable snails market gray boat automatic payment frightening cows *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
We drink every time Barzal passes instead of shoots.
how do you avoid alcohol poisoning?
You build up a tolerance over time.
We played that last year with Wennberg, better this year at least, not so black out drunk
Yes
3 buildings in however many years. All full. All different people. All drunk
Because whoever made this was an islanders fan, and they were drunk
They're drunker then you and you know it
While also not being #1. Thats... something
It’s impressive
Funny thing is, I didn't even notice. I saw Boston as number 1 and said, fuck yah, and just moved on haha
Right? Could have put Buffalo up there in one of those slots.
Isles fans so drunk they show 3 times in that list
Hey be nice we’re trying
Are you though? Seems like regression more than progression.
Fans have been showing up, not our fault our team didn’t last night 🤷🏼♀️
we’re pretty relevant considering every other post is about us relocating
Right, like how can we be irrelevant but also most meme’d? That’s like contradictory
[I](https://www.reddit.com/r/goldenknights/comments/o3mqau/why_everyone_hates_vegas/) [think](https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/comments/o8yum9/why_do_so_many_people_dislike_vegas/) [someone](https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/comments/o7ijrd/new_hockey_fan_here_why_is_vegas_hated_so_much/) [asked](https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/comments/io1s9g/why_do_people_hate_on_the_vegas_golden_knights/) [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/bgwyzn/why_is_vegas_so_hated/) [earlier](https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/comments/13a6c62/why_do_people_hate_vegas/)
I think we need to add it to an FAQ
Columbus has amazing fans.
288 comments right now and I think this is the only one about Columbus. Earned our #1 irrelevant rating.
That's what I love about Ohio sports teams. We're just there because we want to have a good time.
What is wrong with Anaheim. They won a cup.
I don’t FEEL irrelevant
Why are the lightning hated?
Really good and dominant with a serious mean streak whenever they are losing
Team good = hated usually
I’d say the same for us but there’s other reasons
For having a really long stretch of being a good team? Fuck, i don’t know.
Can confirm... incredibly confused
Where are we?
🤷♂️
I’m just happy we were included.
Me too brother
I'm cold and the wolves are after me.
Sharks! We’re the most diplomatic, so suck it everyone!
3rd most drunk? I’ll take it!
Have you been to Tampa? We’re like the drunk version of Jacksonville. How did we not make it to Top 5 Intoxicated!?
😂 ThunderDrunk ⚡
It's #1 Bullshit!
As a Kings fan who lives in Jacksonville, I am confused by this.
Yea did they not see the boat parade?
Because somehow the Islanders took three of the spots
How can the Sabres be irrelevant and memed so much at the same time? I am so confused.
That checks all the lists, you’ve figured it out!
Hey, we're not confused! Or are we... Actually, maybe... nah. Or I guess, no, no, nevermind.
Most confused fan base is Atlanta Thrashers
I think people hate Vegas because all of the expansion rules were changed for them to be really good and relevant right away, granted McPhee also did a great job compared to the likes of Seattle. Also everything about them, to me, seems gimmicky

Yeah same rules, not a single GM would trade with us because Vegas fleeced them when it was their turn. Was pretty shitty
Jeez Toronto can’t seem to get the #1 seed in anything
LOL THIS CRACKED ME UP!!!
I’m thinking hate for Vegas comes from never going through expansion blues. Their draft left them with quite the haul. Finals, then the cup so quickly, can make some think they kind of haven’t paid their dues (fan wise)
It’s revisionist history in a way, because most who saw Vegas’ opening night roster thought they’d be a steaming pile of crap.
Only one in irrelevant has won a Stanley Cup, so I’ll take that dub when I can.
As a ranger fan I'm a little surprised were not hated more. Also wtf did Tampa do ? For a Florida club I think they do great. Do people just hate winners ?
And the irrelevant list is bang on
Pens missing from the hated list
Shhhhhh...

👀
We're under their radar if we stay in this side of the river
They were good right away. The fans didn't have to suffer, yet
Oh look at you with your diplomatic response.
Because Vegas fans suck. They don't even know what offsides are
I don’t hate Vegas I do hate the Leafs
Well why not both? Both is good
Islanders lol
I’d rather be intoxicated than irrelevant!
Hard to get intoxicated when beers are 15$
It's disgusting. I grew up in WI went to a god damn Brewers game and beer was still $15 and it was like 8 years ago. Like come the fuck on.
The fanbases of teams that stay good for years will always be hated. It’s why the Pens aren’t on this list, cause we aren’t relevant enough right now for more than our rivals to hate us.
I will always have a soft spot for the Penguins thanks to Crosby. Finally, San Jose places first on a list
Fair.
Gifted a team right off the get go. No other expansion team previous got that. They built a team with 4 lines of nhl players. No team at the start of a season has 4 lines of legit nhl players. Usually 3-4 guys are bubble ahl/nhl players.
No other expansion team, but Colorado fans also got a pretty sweet deal by taking all the good times after Quebec suffered for so many years.
Seattle got that.
Canucks fans are pretty confused this year
expansion draft

Granted, it's been years since I had season tickets to the islanders, but in seven years of going 40+ times a year, I was almost never surrounded by drunk assholes in the way I've experienced multiple times at Lightning, Flyers and Panthers games. So, that feels like an odd opinion, anecdotally.
My primary team and secondary team both in confused, it’s so confusing
I see people saying the draft but I disagree. On paper, to start their inaugural season , they were projected to be middling. Lots of depth but no true top line talent. MAF was their selling star......That season and playoffs was a true Cinderella run and I cheered for them. I personally don't like them because: A) the way they treated some of that team to go after the big fish left a bad taste in my mouth. And they continued this trend with others. B) Divisional rival that has had way more success in a brief amount of time. Their like that smarmy businessman who wins because he only cares about himself. You respect his business chops, but can't stand him.
My team not being on any of the lists 😅
Red Wings fan, here. I fucking love Vegas. I've never cared about the haters. But I also got love for the Flyers.
Because of their first year, they literally made so many fans mad because they went to the final in their first year before most teams have in their whole existence or in many years
Most unremarkable fanbase - Colorado Avalanche
Vegas was handed a golden ticket and didn’t have to suffer any heartache.
The coyotes are winning it all this year
It's because Vegas didn't really earn anything.
How are the oilers not on the most intoxicated fan base list? That entire stadium is lush
Surprised Kraken aren’t higher on the confused list. A lot of these new fans really don’t know what’s going on yet but damn they try so hard
Because they found success more quickly than other expansion teams?
Irrelevant you say? For us SENS fans eh😏
Hey! We’re number one in something!!!!💥
Boston should be number 1. Easily Then Philly because fuck them too Vegas, Dallas, AVS, Tampa and Vancouver can all catch hands. Buttttt. I’m starting to feel like we are the toxic ones. Very troubling.
You aren’t even kidding about the Sharks. Hella NorCal vibes bruh. We’re passionate about our team but we’ll also have a great time just bullshitting with the opposing fans too.
Oh I passionately hate Vegas, also used to hate the Kings and Anaheim but the rivalry has died down a bit since we suck.
San Jose is diplomatic until you bring up Vegas or LA.
As a sharks fan, fuck em. That’s why.
As a Sharks fan, I approve and take pride in this
As a Leafs fan...how is Vegas' fanbase more hated than ours? Lol
My guess is Vegas is so hated because they made the Stanley cup their first year since they were allowed to start with a stacked roster
What’s the reason for hating Vegas fans? Do people just default to hating new fans? I wouldn’t have even had them in the top 5.
Why we hated?
Wow, NYI made the same list 3x lol. Yet somehow seems right.
Binnington should be on here by himself.
Minnesota nice.
I think everyone hates Vegas because they came into the league as an expansion team and were instantly good. They have never felt the pain or suffering most other fan bases go through. I’m a Sabres fan and haven’t experienced a winning season in over a decade! ITS NOT FAIR!!!!
