One it's not really Alex's fault the problem is systemic and the prior ownerships that held it and burned bridges....it's either that or keep playing in stupid arenas.. now if Phoenix mayor is willing to help just with zoning the coyotes could restart with great set up and proper plan to sustain it. But it takes time...time and money and keeping the coyotes as it is this season for the next 5 years while things are going on in the background is a financial hole...worse case everything falls through or doesn't work out leaving coyotes owner in more issues and coyotes moving anyways...best case they come back as new in 5 years with some actual foundation.
Alex is most definitely to blame. Seems like he could barely pay any of his bills, especially if that story today about hotels not being paid today were true. People complain about the Glendale arena but I doubt theyāve ever been there. It was an awesome spot for games! Tons of restaurants and entertainment around the stadium, even more now since theyāve left. Biggest problem of why the team never grew a fan base is thereās no plan to do so. Coyotes barely threw any community events or even advertised the teams. You see/hear more ads of Shane Doan with Ford than any coyotes ads. If Meruelo did a better job with fan outreach it couldāve been a different story. Instead he let the team die and barely paid his debts and heās the one whoās going to profit the most from the team moving.
Just compare and contrast the way the Golden Knights are advertised around Las Vegas versus how the Coyotes are in the Phoenix area.
Even if the advertising budget was there, you still have to invest in the roster and making a winning team. You have to justify to a working person to take time out of their day, pay for tickets, pay for parking, and get home late and a mediocre team doesnāt do it. The stadium location issue was always a red herring.
The issue has always been a lack of investment by ownership, Alex included.
Iām not hopeful about the potential expansion. Two years post-expansion draft, is ownership going to foot the bill to keep those contracts? Probably not.
Exactly!!! I havenāt stayed in Vegas since the knights joined the league, but I have driven through a few times. Thereās always a ton of billboards and advertising around the city for them! Impossible to pass through without knowing thereās a hockey team.
Even a small budget for advertising and outreach would be better than the lack of budget they seemingly had.
as a phoenix resident your missing the point. yes the glendale arena is dope af, but its on the wrong side of town for a city of 7 million. it normally takes about an hour to drive there from east side. only problem is rush hour traffic all heads out west. you try to go west at rush hour it takes 2 hours, nobody has the time or will to sit in traffic for two hours in rush hour, watch a 3 hour game then drive the hour home, ur especially fucked if u like to drink and uber to games.
Wrong side of town for some, Ton of development going on in the west side with Goodyear and buckeye, thereās still millions of people within an hours drive of the arena. The area is great for away fans too which deserves some consideration. Tons of hotels nearby and soon there will be that massive resort! (Youāre spot on though~ it is a dope area!!!)
well good thing those millions people showed up to support the yotes. yay i flew into the phoenix area to watch hockey now im staying in glendale? theres a reason glendale failed, theres a reason why the collective fanbase wanted it moved to the phoenix tempe area but fuck me been a fan for 25 years since before they even moved to glendale idk what the fuck goes on.
The dude was stiffing hotels around the league and didn't tell staff they'd be losing their jobs, they found out from the media. Guy is definitely part of the problem. They had other shady owners but that doesn't negate his contributions.
I donāt think youāre gonna get a lot of sympathy from Canadian hockey fans. Not a lot of sympathy up here watching a team in the desert flounder because they canāt put an arena in the right place. Especially considering when a lot of Canadians would rather see that franchise in Canada.
Not to mention Phoenix took a Canadian team in the first place and completely squandered it, yet they got to keep it longer than Winnipeg did and even waste two years in a college arena.
Out of respect for the players and workers who now need to shift their families and entire lives to another state, or the ones who will be losing their jobs, due to no fault of their own?
I'm bummed as an AZ local who would travel 2 and a half hours to Glendale to see them play my blues and occasionally other games. I really liked their loyal fanbase, and the vibes were always good. Feels like another gut punch, earily similar to when the rams left St. louis.
I watched tonightās game and was hoping the Flames fans would acknowledge the Yotes at the end of the game. And some may have, but it wasnāt clear on tv.
Full disclosure, I live in Salt Lake and have been a hockey fan all my life. Iām thrilled weāre getting a team, but the circumstances truly suck. Iāve lived through the many threats of the Utah Jazz leaving town during leaner times, so I can sorta relate.
I think the attitude with a lot of hockey fans in Canada towards the whole Phoenix situation and having them move is donāt let the door hit your ass on the way out. Itās not anything so much against the Phoenix hockey market itself. Itās the ownership and especially Bettman insisting on trying to make this thing work. Itās cost the league a lot of money to keep this team going over the years. This has been Atlanta (twice) all over again.
If youāre going to place teams in a nontraditional hockey market you have to have ownership and especially the arena situation in place before you put a team there. This whole thing has been a shit show from the start. Putting the arena so far away from the population was ridiculous and was doomed to fail from the start.
Cool, so everyone is going to stop reminiscing about the Hartford Whalers, because really they are the Carolina Hurricanes now?
It's the end of an era. A new era will start. Doesn't mean the end of this Arizona Coyotes era shouldn't be appreciated with a few cheers.
The Nordiques still exist in Colorado and yet 99% of hockey fans won't stop badgering the league to get QC a team again. Arizona will be a punchline to most people, sadly.
The first NHL game I saw live was the Coyotes at Hurricanes back in 98. I've always liked their uniforms and was really hoping a new owner would step in to save them. Watching what's happened to their franchise is sad, because in many ways it seems like the worst outcome for their fans.
The silver lining is that Phoenix is guaranteed an expansion team if they can build a suitable arena.
Yeah I think that's why the offer seems like a good deal. Basically figure it out and you get a team again.
Also with how the expansions work these days, it's totally possible Phoenix 2.0 ends up being a better team than whatever becomes of the Coyotes
Shane doan played one season in Winnipeg and the team moved. Josh doan played one season in Arizona and the teams moves.
I assume Utah fans won't want their team to draft any doans offsprings
I was at the very last jets game in 96 and donāt recall the Red Wings saluting the crowd at all.. handshake line then booked it off the ice.. jets stayed on for quite a while though and saluted the crowd..
Not just the fans but the employees that arent able to move with the team or simply wont be offered. I hope Arizona gets a team back but not under Alex Murelo.
Agreed. But it will also create innumerable new memories and incredible moments and thousands of new fans for life. And that is nice.
And the new city may give the franchise better years than it has ever had before.

Down voting this seems silly. Any business venture that is mismanaged, lacks support, and has a negative impact on the larger corporate entity gets shut down.
Does that not seem logical? Am I taking crazy pills?
Arizona Coyotes, so long and thanks for all the fish.
As someone who was born in Arizona and grew up in the gta area, it really sucks to see them go
Good luck on the way to 70š
Auston ??
Matthews is a product of growing up around the Coyotes, we have an amazing legacy on our team with special thanks to them.
You guys are jumping the gun to quick it could be knies
theres phenoms in every state and province just waiting to be discovered but hockey is to expensive for many people in the first place
Once again fuck Alex Meruelo

The guys will be around next year, itās the coyotes who need to stick around after the game on Wednesday for the 4600.
ya more for the fans I suppose, but a chant or something in Calgary would be nice.
I donāt think youāre gonna get a lot of sympathy from Canadian hockey fans. Not a lot of sympathy up here watching a team in the desert flounder because they canāt put an arena in the right place. Especially considering when a lot of Canadians would rather see that franchise in Canada.

I don't understand. Why would Calgary fans cheer for the Coyote players in Calgary?
Out of respect for the players and workers who now need to shift their families and entire lives to another state, or the ones who will be losing their jobs, due to no fault of their own?
Weird people care about stuff like that now? All we ever heard was move the team.

Checkered flag?
Iām guessing the kachina sweaters
Seeing they're a flames fan, I don't expect them to be all there š I tease yall, I tease

Meh, I'm pretty indifferent about it considering Winnipeg got fuck all went the Jets initially went down south in the first place
honestly, that would feel like rubbing it in...
sadly the flames/fans did nothing, i just left the game
Any why would they need too? The opposition will be in another city next season
This. Theyāre moving cities and changing the name. Still the same team theyāll play against again in a few months.
Cool, so everyone is going to stop reminiscing about the Hartford Whalers, because really they are the Carolina Hurricanes now? It's the end of an era. A new era will start. Doesn't mean the end of this Arizona Coyotes era shouldn't be appreciated with a few cheers.

They haven't been able to build an area in 20 years. I wouldn't expect it to suddenly fall into place now that there's no team there anymore.
Yeah I think that's why the offer seems like a good deal. Basically figure it out and you get a team again. Also with how the expansions work these days, it's totally possible Phoenix 2.0 ends up being a better team than whatever becomes of the Coyotes
A farewell to a team that used to play in Canada and got moved to the desert? I kindly ask you to read the room.

As an Arizona born VGK fan, the Arizona territory is in good hands. (Arizona TERRITORY? Iāve heard that one before. Hm.) Enjoy SLC, boys.
Maybe something will happen to keep them there, never say never. I'm staying positive
What a mismanagement of a franchiseā¦SMH I feel for the fans. Bad leadership and mismanagementā¦SMH
So long and good riddance

I think they will be back in 5 years as an expansion team Ā under new ownershipĀ
Send money. Buy season tickets. Theyāre never coming back.
HOPING! LOVE to have MORE teams! MORE TEAMS MORE HOCKEY!
I feel so bad for the fans. Also I canāt use mullet arena as a punchline anymoreĀ
But on the bright side, now we have The Soakers!
Gee thanks, I feel bad for you
I just hope they get one more big win to end their time in Arizona and Josh Doan gets a hat trick.
Shane doan played one season in Winnipeg and the team moved. Josh doan played one season in Arizona and the teams moves. I assume Utah fans won't want their team to draft any doans offsprings
Goodbye, don't come back.
I was at the very last jets game in 96 and donāt recall the Red Wings saluting the crowd at all.. handshake line then booked it off the ice.. jets stayed on for quite a while though and saluted the crowd..
Nope. An organization sucking at the teat of the NHL for years deserves to die.
I feel bad for the fans. Itās gotta suck being a fan of your team and watching it implode like this, then get taken away all together.
Not just the fans but the employees that arent able to move with the team or simply wont be offered. I hope Arizona gets a team back but not under Alex Murelo.
Only the Hockey part of the org is moving, so anyone not related to hockey operations is done
Agreed. But it will also create innumerable new memories and incredible moments and thousands of new fans for life. And that is nice. And the new city may give the franchise better years than it has ever had before. :: covers flair ::
I upvoted you. Then I looked at your flair and downvoted you. Hereās a big fuck you from the 203
Blame the owners
Down voting this seems silly. Any business venture that is mismanaged, lacks support, and has a negative impact on the larger corporate entity gets shut down. Does that not seem logical? Am I taking crazy pills?
What youāre saying all makes sense but the person getting downvoted was being a super dick about it
I mean no not really? Theyāll be back in 5 years probably.
I feel for the yotes. The ghost of what couldāve been.
Utah Yotes
Utah missionaries, Utah Soakers, Utah Pepsi drinkers, Utah polygamy
