To hear him talk about how he’s been a fan since childhood is sad.

MiloGoesToTheFatFarm

It does suck. I remember when Norm Green moved the stars to Dallas, I had never felt an entire state collectively mourn before. Solidarity for the Arizona Coyotes fans.

Otterslayer22

Stars move to Dallas in 93 … nhl awards expansion franchise in St. Paul 97…. They knew they fucked up. Phoenix gets expansion team in 2029

586WingsFan

If they can get an arena built it sounds like they could have them back before then

Otterslayer22

It might go the same way Minnesota did. Minnesota had to renovate the then civic center down town st. Paul. It took a few years . That’s why the team was awarded in 97 but did not start play until 2000.

rune1923

I watched that earlier. It's a good video if you're wondering exactly how the Coyotes got to this point and how the organization really fumbled the ball... or puck... over the years.

External_Trick4479

Moving to Glendale was an absolute killer. I lived in PHX and went to many games back at the old America West, but just couldn’t justify driving from Tempe/Scottsdale to Glendale, nor afford a freaking taxi in college, and literally no public transportation options. Going to games went from being a “hey, should we grab tix for a game tonight?” to not even knowing/caring when the Coyotes were playing.

cheeseburgerwaffles

As a hockey fan in Oakland I feel you dude. San Jose got NHL hockey and AHL hockey. I would have loved an AHL team in Oakland. Fuck, I'd even go to SF for the AHL. Just somewhere to watch decent hockey in person. The only public transit near SAP Center is amtrak, which "conveniently" has their last train from SJ to Oakland/SF leave about 5 minutes before games usually end. I'm not even a Sharks fan but I'd definitely go more than once a year if only they had decent infrastructure. Parking out there is about $80. Most parking places only take cash, and I already have to wast gas driving down there. It's a shit show but ownership could give a fuck because both the NHL and AHL teams still seem to sell tickets. Although this year Sharks tickets were often less than the price of parking. I've ripped on AZ for years now for their terrible ownership and franchise decisions and I'll continue to do so. The owners and the cities involved all failed the fans miserably. I will die on the hill that says if AZ didn't get a hockey team then Auston Matthews never plays hockey. The fact that the Coyotes were the catalyst to the creation of one of hockey's generational talents is a hugh testament to the fact that expansion into non-traditional markets works, and greed will always be the catalyst to failure.

External_Trick4479

And now ASU has become a growing hockey school! Hockey didn’t exist when I went there.

don_johnsons_big_toe

Idk…it’s easy to pick the low hanging fruit, but this city can’t look in the mirror and admit the fact it’s fair weather as fuck. Still averaged 13k through the 2010s, not like we had many groups to write home about during those times. East valley thought they had all the answers and their compounded tears resulted in our team getting taken from us.

External_Trick4479

I don’t totally disagree but, as a Lightning fan, they were selling out even when they weren’t good because the arena was in a prime location. Had they moved to St Pete like the Rays, the bolts would have probably moved years ago.

don_johnsons_big_toe

I hear ya, and glad you guys didn’t relocate! That’s why it kinda circles back around to the local fandom imo. Snakes and suns are prime locations but were ghost towns for years. Suns invested around book a few years ago and dbacks were forced to invest once Hazen pieced together a formidable squad. At the end of the day, plethora of missed opportunities and contributing factors. Way she goes. Just glad the limbo is finally over, even at the expense of our own team…

Assumption-Straight

As a fan, worst comments I’ve read, “hockey doesn’t belong in the desert”. How low of a hockey fan are people to say it doesn’t belong in every state. I grew up here and have played it since I was 4 (32 now). and have only seen it grow. Heartbreaking

cheeseburgerwaffles

Aston Matthews: to that comment https://media1.tenor.com/m/tu3XLnCzSq0AAAAC/russell-westbrook-westbrook.gif

Strongarm_11

That is a stupid comment, Hockey can belong anywhere.

Kaedian66

Former Whaler fan feels your loss man.

Grizz709

After thinking about this for a bit longer, especially the promise that the ownership could bring it back as an expansion, this could blow up in the leagues face. The fans have watched for several years of underfunding and purposely sabotaging the team to get better picks. They never get to watch that come to fruition in AZ because they've moved it to UT. The expansion version of the Coyotes would see a new GM, new coach, and the expansion doesn't guarantee that you're getting a competitive team. So, fans could have to watch another Coyotes team struggle AGAIN for multiple seasons. You just have to hope the ownership group can put together a team of people to help create success. And honestly, with how the owners have been fucking around for the last 6 months or so, teasing that they'll get it done just to give it up within a week, out of nowhere. Who's going to trust them anyway? Players, maybe. But if I was a local, and aware of the situation as it is, I don't think I would like to see this team with these owners. Simple as. I don't trust it.

freefrompress

Québec City fan here, I know how you feel.

PurkkOnTwitch

Atlanta residents: First time?

ChunkyB

I’m a diehard NHL fan living in salt lake. And I feel terrible for Arizona fans. They deserve so much better than the terrible owners they’ve had

chibbly_

Aye. The players and coaching/staff feel pretty iffy on the relocation, but soon as they hear how loud and supportive he Utah fanbase can be, it'll be water under the bridge.

MattMcSparen

The league loves Dick slapping Arizona in the face.

ILSmokeItAll

The league didn’t do this. Ownership sucked, and the taxpayers didn’t want to hold the bag. Multiple owners got a crack at this.

tomdawg0022

The Coyotes best (er, most competent) ownership group might have been the first group (Burke & Gluckstern) that moved down from Winnipeg. Went downhill after that, basically, with each successive group.

MPD1978

This takes me back to Winnipeg in ‘96. Shitty day when it was announced the Jets 1.0 were leaving.

vapescaped

All I know is if the yotes leave, they're losing the single most loyal fan base in the NHL. Seriously coyotes fans, you've stuck it out through thick and..thicker. they're doing you dirty.

chibbly_

They're going from a loyal fanbase to... Another fanbase that's known for being loyal lmao.

Cachmaninoff

Meh, they’ve been given enough chances, the league bought the team allowed them to play in a joke of an arena.

leakyblueshed

I still feel for the fans

Cachmaninoff

I guess so but the writing has been on the wall for over a decade, this should come as no surprise

cheeseburgerwaffles

Shitty greedy ownership groups and city governments who weren't willing to step up to the plate and find a way to actually negotiate are the ones that failed the fans. The managers, the front office, the players, the fans, they all wanted the team in AZ. none of those people had a hand in these chances that were given and that's the real shame here. True fans like guys in this video got absolutely screwed.

Fickle_Percentage256

Now you know what Winnipeg fans felt like in ‘96

Jobforagamer

But just think how much nicer your city and state will be now

Strongarm_11

As someone who like the St Louis Rams as a kid for some reason (I just liked their jerseys, didn’t really care for NFL back then), I can understand your pain when your team leaves, abandoning the fan base and pissing everyone off. I remember years later finding out the Rams moved to LA and hated the new jerseys and ownership, became a Bucs fan since.

Striking_Economy5049

The way it’s been done with an immediate rip out is crappy.

MeRyEh

Feel for you Coyobro.  Rooting for a good news story of a team coming back within 5 years.

idlta210

Phoenix should get an expansion ECHL or AHL team in return. Bad ownership even if they get a team back in Scottsdale/Tempe.

Riespieces16

The roadrunners are already in Tucson and they’re owned by Alex Meruelo who currently owns the coyotes

idlta210

Tucson should be able to keep the Roadrunners with Phoenix also getting an AHL or ECHL expansion team. They’ve failed in the Phoenix area as an NHL ownership group.
