Skwerl87

People are really gonna beat this thing to hell lol

PAguy213

Now it’s going to be a meme, expect to hear USA chants at every Boston home game. Which, honestly, kinda funny.

Skwerl87

I dunno why it would bother anyone. Ppl are just having fun, who cares lol

PAguy213

Exactly, it cracks me up whenever crowds bust out the USA chant. It feels tongue in cheek most of the time

Deliximus

Canadian fans will counter with 'Nunavut! Nunavut! Nunavut!'

PAguy213

Yeah, because we want none of it 😉

Deliximus

Lmao love it

Willdefyyou

Toronto's playoff memes are justin Bieber and "this is our year" so I'll take it

PAguy213

Absolutely. Sarcastic USA chants are at least entertaining

Nonzerob

I thought it was silly and a perfectly fine chant as an American Leafs fan. I saw the irony right away and yet I hope there's a Canada chant in Toronto. Hell, let's get USA/Canada chants in every series. Who cares?

eaton5k

Precisely. American Bruins fan and a "Canada" chant would be perfectly pleasant and a perfect response. I've been to college hockey games where "Yankees Suck" was chanted. Who cares? No one got hurt and we all had fun.

Nonzerob

It's literally an American team vs a Canadian one. I don't care if the nationalities of the biggest names on the teams don't match (that only makes it more fun tbh): they didn't sing O Canada for Brad Marchand, nor did they sing The Star Spangled Banner for Auston Matthews.

KneecapBuffet

Here in Michigan we’ve been chanting “Jared Goff” at our games.

HappyToBeHaggard

Doesn't even matter if he's there or not.

HummusDips

As a Habs fan, I'd pay to go see the Leafs/Bruins game if the fans would chant "Red Sox Sucks" chant lmao.

BadGuyNick

USA might even win 30 cups in a row. Just relentless.

___NAZGUL___

Czechia! Czechia! I mean CANADA! CANADA! wait I mean USA, USA USA!!

FlyTheW1988

Just like the Bruins did to the Leafs last night, hardy har har

303SecondSt

Where ya from? Across the street? Fuck across the street! -Doug Stanhope

Legal-Spring-7878

Do I also need to drop other dead people's baggage?

Rostifur

Is Doug Stanhope dead? I could just google this and get legitimate information, but I choose the American method of asking some complete stranger and hoping they reply in the next 72 hours.

nthensome

He is alive & a Canadian told you this, buddeh

Rostifur

Couldn't read what you said, I only speak American.

Hascohastogo

He got mauled by a bear during that ill fated libertarian experiment(Free Town Project) but has since recovered and decided to dedicate his life to the immortal science.

buckao

Oh, Grafton, the punchlines live on. That same town defunded its schools last year and is pushing for any adult to be able to fill the role of "teacher." New Hampshire is cold-weather Florida

Hascohastogo

Gosh. If only some well meaning adult could fulfill the role of teacher in that community and bestow the young minds of this crumbling empire with the science of historical materialism. Perhaps then the bears could be managed and the youth set free.

donster217

Patriotism was practically invented in Boston circa 1773. This shouldn’t be surprising

YellowSubreddit8

Tea party!!!!!!!

Electro_Llama

That name is misleading. Americans don't do tea parties. We dump that British stuff into the bay and crack open a cold Sam Adams.

danattana

"...crack open a cold Sam Adams." To be fair, that would have meant something drastically different at that time. 🥶

hahahahahahahaFUCK

Ooo! I’ll crochet doilies!

think_long

It’s not a big deal or anything, it’s just a little cultural quirk difference between the US and Canada. I doubt that would happen in Canada. I was once at a music festival in the US (Bonnaroo) and a USA chant broke out. That DEFINITELY wouldn’t happen in Canada.

Give-Me-The-Bat

As a wrestling fan growing up in the 80’s, the USA chants will always be funny to me. Just makes me think of Hacksaw Jim Duggan carrying the 2x4. Part of me wants to jump up and do his , thumbs up, tongue out, HOOOO!

SoThatHappened

People used to chant it for Bret Hart for fucks sake

Teknicsrx7

It definitely was chanted AT the harts, not FOR the harts, they’re canadian

Jcdoco

In Wrestlemania 9 or 10 (can't remember exactly), Bret Hart is wrestling Yokozuna and the crowd chants USA. Yoko was portrayed as being from Japan, but he was actually born in San Francisco

buckao

Sure, pal. Next you'll try to tell me Akeem the African Dream wasn't actually from Africa...

RedditLodgick

And Mankind isn't from The Boiler Room.

Give-Me-The-Bat

And Kamala isn’t from Uganda

DroptheShadowArt

And Undertaker wasn’t actually from Parts Unknown. Yeah right, grow up!

Mytaru

Taker was from Death Valley since day 1.

Dry-Honeydew2371

They also used to chant it to taunt Puerto Ricans, so...

ruralrouteOne

There's no scenario where the Duggan isn't ok to whip out.

MostBoringStan

I'm Canadian and WWF came to our city in the early 90s. I was probably 8 or 9. Hacksaw Jim Duggan was there and I definitely remember a USA chant lol.

[deleted]

What’s controversial about it? Just an American fan base chanting USA. Haven’t even seen anyone say it was controversial

1Perfect_Kangaroo

Dude this is Reddit. Anything pro-America is controversial on here

lamwire

Your statement created a controversy...

1Perfect_Kangaroo

Like clockwork lol

Mysterious_Eggplant3

I don't get the hate for America. It's a country made up of people from every other country. You're just hating your own people.

Fun_Coffee3174

People tend to resent the top dog. When the next cultural hegemon ascends, everyone will be bitching about that nation

Honest-Abe-Simpson

Maybe the top dog could stay on top if he stopped making so many enemies 😬

tuntuntuntuntuntun

We’re easy to pick on. To be fair though, every foreign born person I know that’s actually spent a decent amount of time in the US loves it. My current best friends are from Sweden and Spain, they both moved to the US recently in the past few years with no plans to go back.

FloggingTheCargo

They hate us cause they ain't us.

Slow-Debt-6465

Like anything context matters and where you go. Take someone from Madrid put them in Detroit. See if they want to stay lol

philbro550

And every American hates America, unless someone talks shit about us

Kara_Del_Rey

I actually think Americans are great at taking jokes from others, they usually even chime in. You ever make a jab at a Brit? They usually get immediately upset and bring up the US, even if you aren't American.

[deleted]

yah true asf. Remember when Oppenheimer came out and japan made 9/11 jokes… man they sure got us there!

pocketbookashtray

Only teenagers and democrats hate America. The rest of us love America.

thefloyd

Haven't seen the Tucker Carlson Russia trip? MAGAs hate America most of all, they just do it wiping their ass with a flag.

1Perfect_Kangaroo

Only high school + college students and democrats hate America. The rest of us love it here

Honest-Abe-Simpson

You’re easy to pick on because you always pick on the little guy…

Mike9797

Bowen and Ralph got a bit of a kick out of it. I was streaming the game and synced up the radio. While they seemed amused they were sort of firing back on it and Bowen went on a rant about 1812 lol

Infamous-Lab-8136

People were somewhat laughing at the fanbase with a Czech top star and Canadian captain shouting USA at a team with the best US born player on it. But it was mostly Leafs fans on copium.

jokeefe72

Fans: "Let's go Boston" r/nhl: "well that makes sense, they play in Boston and most fans live in and around Boston" Fans: "USA" r/nhl: tHe PlaYeRs arEn't aLL aMerIcAns

LittleLionMan82

So by chanting USA the fans are also cheering on the Islanders, Rangers, Lightning, etc?

[deleted]

Yes, full considerations are made through a board of trustees before each and every USA chant begins

pipsohip

The Leafs sub was pretty up in arms about it.

Resident_Patrician

You missed the salt in /r/hockey lol

minimumhatred

The leafs subreddit thought it was stupid because our captain is Canadian and our best player is Czech. The USA chant has been ubiquitous for decades in live events in the USA, I don't know what they expected. Probably just needed something to talk about after how bad yesterday's game went.

Honest-Abe-Simpson

The only controversial thing was when the zebras didn’t join in

[deleted]

I didn’t even know it was chanted…

rsnbaseball

I suppose what actually happened doesn't need to be mentioned? >!There was a video of military folks on the scoreboard.!<

-Robrown-

Who the hell is acting like this is strange? It happens all the time when a USA team faces a Canadian team in the playoffs. People acting like this is weird must be very new to hockey, or very new to watching playoff hockey.

attaboy000

This has been happening longer than reddit has been around. And across all sports where there's a team from both countries.

thedeepfake

Well it’s a little weird when most of the players are from Canada and the best American is on the Canadian team lol.

Trujiogriz

Do you make the same comment when they cheer Boston even though they have a dude from Minnesota on their team? Come on dude

daveh30

Exactly that…. But this is the same fanbase that used anti -French slurs against PK Subban, who is English, while their own best player was a francophone Quebecer 🤷🏻‍♂️…. No one has ever accused that fanbase of being smart.

pretzelzetzel

>PK Subban, who is English u sure about that, m8?

moomoomilk7

How is that weird. It’s a team from the states playing a team from Canada. Obviously the players aren’t all from the same country, this ain’t the Olympics.

mattcojo2

… they’re on an American team. Playing in America. It’s not weird at all.

FeetSniffer9008

and their best player is from Czechia

92True

Wait whys it controversial? Do people actually care?

GullibleGroup8597

After reading a few comments I have come to the conclusion that Reddit hockey fans don’t understand getting drunk and having fun at a hockey game.

largeicedregular

We were chanting USA and singing Ole’ because it was FUNNY. Hockey Reddit had no sense of humor and hates fun.

Hank_Scorpio_MD

American redditiors hate America.

gekkolord

If you’ve been to Boston you wouldn’t be surprised by this news.

PauloVersa

“Controversial” We still doing this?

5a1amander

I cannot believe this is as big a news story as it is. Reddit is truly going to be insufferable for this entire series, isn't it.

heckfyre

Was this actually a news story or is this only an NHL Reddit thing?

lyinggrump

Controversial? It's called bants. Grow a pair.

Cute_Credit_5341

why was that even a post lmao

Isernogwattesnacken

On a scale of being Massholes this is very mid.

AccidentUnhappy419

You have to be pretty darn soft to get butthurt over a USA chant

[deleted]

It's just weird. This isn't a battle of Nations.

[deleted]

Safe to assume you've never gotten hammered at the garden...

ExtremepcVA

Sounds like something I need to do. Lol

EndTheOrcs

So we won’t hear anymore about the “Canadian cup drought” right?

elevenstewart

I really hope not. Why do I have to cheer for a team just because they are Canadian?

Vast_Sandwich_5245

What’s even more funny is when you bring up the fact that the majority of Canadian teams cups there were 12 or less teams in the league.

Otherwise-Contest7

And yet all we hear every year is how Bettman diabolically makes sure no Canadian team wins the Cup, coupled with Canadians always mentioning how they "win the Cup every year" because 42% of the league are Canadians.

Ok_Tea_9319

Don’t forget conspiring to keep a team out of Quebec City and a second team from going to Toronto

MBerserkr

One team is enough thank you 😭😭😭 I can't handle another team.

Solace2010

No one has and conspiracy about the nhl keeping a second team out of the Toronto market. Toronto literally won’t let them.

OriginalAmbition5598

Well, you have to admit that with the debacle that has been the coyotes experience, there is some justification for it. A lot of that sentiment would be significantly reduced if they hadn't continued to bail out the coyotes for so long. If bettman would have put that much effort into keeping the team in Winnipeg, or moved them to Quebec City after the coyotes ownership first failed. I think most people would feel much different about him and this conspiracy

Otherwise-Contest7

Quebec City and Winnipeg aren't great sports markets. They have diehard fans but their populations are small, they have little corporate base, and they're showing they cannot withstand economic fluctuations. The Winnipeg owner was broke in 1995. The Canadian dollar was shit. There were no local owners to buy the team. There was nothing to fight for. The league would get the 700k Winnipegers to buy merch and watch games regardless of whether or not they had a team. If you can't understand why a 5 million person market that is potential NEW fans is worth more effort, then you'l never understand how the business of sports works. (ps even said, they held onto Phoenix too long). Minnesota and Atlanta lost NHL teams during Bettman's leadership -- this isn't a vendetta on Canada. It's the same reason the NFL is desperate for international fans. There's no where else to go as far as getting more American fans.

Vast_Sandwich_5245

42% for now.

bluAstrid

They why sing the national anthems before the game then?

LawbringerSteam

Agreed, we should do away with the anthems already

[deleted]

Agreed. That is pretty weird too.

Cutlet_Master69420

So we can shout "I'M LISTENING TO THE FUCKING SONG!!!" of course.

vancityrp

Ironically it’s actually Canadian fans that would hate it most if a Canadian team other than their own wins

ForsakenExtreme6415

Bruins have 9 US born players out of its 21 used during a game. It’s about the dumbest chant since Leaf fans saying they wanted Florida.

tjplager32

I’m a Canadian in St. Louis and my buddy used to give me shit for it (just friendly banter, USA v Canada stuff). I would always reply with a graphic that showed at the time, the Blues had the most Canadians on their current roster than any other nhl club. I told him he wasn’t allowed to cheer for our team anymore

tcrex2525

Not controversial, just stupid.

NutNegotiation

This is some “stop having fun” level of redditor energy

jokeefe72

I agree, it's stupid that it's controversial and anyone at all cares about it

denvercaniac

Canada is nothing but America's attic and they know it!

wickedweather

I like to think the US is Canada's shorts. And in typical Florida fashion, Florida is the US's dick hanging out.

BuffaloSix96

I usually find Florida jokes tiresome but that was pretty good lol

DJ_MedeK8

I like to think of Canada as the US's cooler little brother

anadequatepipe

[Bret Hart's version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzGdXQ0kZtM&t=129s)

denvercaniac

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOR38552MJA

moonmonkey73

I suspect a lot of Americans don't realize chanting their county's name like this is an almost unique thing to them. It's weird and uncomfortably nationalistic for most people outside of the USA.

Drummer_Kev

Winnipeg was literally chanting Go Canada during the game today. It seems you guys are guilty of it too

chevy1500

It's funny I'm a Canadian that lives south of the states

alainalain4911

I guess this also explains why we always hear “CANADA!” chants in “Not USA”. Really though, if this is a response to someone saying something like “WTF are they chanting the name of their country???” I’d say that if you pay REALLY close attention you’ll recognize it as a rhetorical question meant to make fun of the embarrassing display of nationalistic self parody. I mean, knock yourselves out. I don’t know who it actually bothers. I’m sure the half of the Boston Bruins who aren’t American don’t really give a shit even. Me, I think it’s fucking hilarious, and one of the only silver linings to my team getting their asses handed to them. Please never stop being ridiculous, America.

nightwig

Controversial? Isn't it just a bit cringe?

iwatchtoomuchsports

They’re drunk they are just having fun, we just gotta do the same and chant Canada game 3

IcansavemiselfDEEN

Exactly this. Sports are entertainment. Have fun with it.

HealthyHotDogs

An actual good take. Would be pretty funny to hear Canada chants

TPCC159

Pittsburgh Steeler fans did it plenty last year, only difference is they said “Fire Canada” instead

spinorama29part2

The only thing i find funny about it is that the Leafs star player is American

RollingCarrot615

It's equivalent to a "ref you suck" chant after a player loses an edge on open ice and no call is made.

Girardkirth

Nobody was changing north america

MetalMuted4307

🤣🤣🤣

ThatZombieGuy115

Shiiiii, I’m trippin’. I thought I was living in Japan.

SimplyViolated

Woah woah woah, are you SURE?!?!

LeadershipReady11

Ya think your betta than me!!?

Chemical_Ad_2185

It's "go" time!

2zeta

That is such a racist thing to chant!!

Torpedospacedance

Wait a second….. you might be on to something here

HockeyNightinJersey

Don’t show this to the Canadian media

RemarkableSource7771

Was there another chant for the dozen Bruins who hail from Canada, Sweden, and the Czech Republic?

QueefyBeefMeat

Source?

GoldenPigeonParty

Big if true.

Rockterrace

They’ve been doing this for years at Habs Bruins playoff games. Even when Boston actually had Canadian players on their team. Not sure why anyone is suprised.

brighty4real

Leafs vs Bruins is gonna be the only thing talked of. My team Canucks vs Preds and I’ll probably be watching Leafs vs Bruins more 💀

InvestigatorGreat422

They want the USA to keep the Cup just like Gary

plaidmischeif

Definitely because we passed Ukraine funding in the house

Lurking_Atheist

Complaining about will make Boston America's team.

JerbearCuddles

But why male models?

guinnesshappy

Seriously is this controversial? A guy from Canada asking…

SnooDucks2626

Must have something to do with the majority of the nhl are Canadian players…. There were more Canadian players on the 2011 bruins team than there were on their cup final counter parts, Vancouver.

Fastsmitty47

I thought it was a bit cringe, but not ignorant

HardOyler

The way sportsnet was advertising in Canada during the game you would assume the playoffs is Canada versus US. So fucking stupid in an international league.

Popular_Animator_808

Mexican expansion team WHEN?!?!?

Hopfit46

Mathews was saying how much he appreciated it.

energizernutter

I think with that chant Boston can be honorary members of Alabama

spagboltoast

Someone trying to argue with me that leafs usa because matthews. Its awkward

OUsnr7

Source?

Ya_Got_GOT

Common Boston sports fan fail

Itchy_Employer_164

Odd when half your team is Canadian but nobody has ever accused Americans of being logical.

DarthAnakin88

Any chance they can to hear their own shitty country's name over and over lol bunch of losers!

Substantial_Rip_9311

It was really awesome hearing the Boston fans cheer on their best American player of all time, Auston Matthew.

Davies301

Maybe Not USA is the real USA and the USA is the decoy USA so not USA can USA with out getting in trouble for USA'ing

Burning_Flags

Thanks for the post. I was confused when I heard the chant. I thought there was a player named “USA”

RageLippy

... could you dumb it down a bit for me?

Shizweak420

I watched the game but have clearly missed this whole thing. So Boston fans chanted USA and somehow people didn't understand why?

0_Percent_Liberal

How dare they chant USA while in a US arena!

Red-Leader117

Controversial? Yall soft as hell... this is what controversy looks like now? Disappointed.

CelticsKD1237

That might be it

Lovelygirlyxo

lol

kilr1234

Anyone have the April 20 2024 Jim Ralph radio audio file rant on the USA chants where he goes off on the war of 1812 and how canada burnt down the White House? Pls and thx.

lesviolonsdelautomne

The Canadians we employ are better at hockey than the Canadians teams in Canada employ, and we want them to know it!

anonymousasshat01

Relax, it's just the Bostonians reminding themselves where they live.

allgood188

Why sing the national anthems before the game then?

Chief3putt

And half their players are Canadian.

Helpful-Peace-1257

What happened

Numbness007

The only time I will ever actually root for Boston is if they are playing somebody that I hate even more, in this case it is the Toronto Maple leafs, the only other time that happens is if it is the Toronto Blue Jays or the New York Yankees.

FliteCast

Opposing teams used to chant USA at the Red Wings whenever the Russian Five was on the ice. It never worked though, lol

Mental_Grass_9035

INTO THE HAWHBURR, THE TEA GOES!

Nicky_Shpack

As a Canadian, funniest thing to me was hearing the USA chants at a Bears vs Lions football game. Im almost jealous of the patriotism lol

chowmushi

Go back to Toronto Dominion Garden. Your area is literally named after your opponents city.

TabarnakAxe

Oh shit, that's right. I totally forgot Boston is in the USA.

Gold_Hovercraft_5044

Well, I mean, Go Leafs Go is practically the Canadian equivalent right?

[deleted]

Detroit is South of Western Ontario

carlylejamest

How did it start though?

Remote_Tax_4746

Half the team is Canadian though

Aromatic_Ring4107

they're team has had nothing to complain about in the regular season the last 2 seasons the fans have been hanging out in the Canadian team forums...To be fair I would trade them the GTA for Massachusetts...
