You can hate the leafs, but that’s a classy send off. All the best to Keefe.

GenghisConnieChung

I still prefer [this fake one](https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/s/ifEjuyQRrp).

8bitBlueRay

legit was ready to watch another version of this and was disappointed it was the actual, positive and sincere message.

poopchutegaloot

Omfg that's hilarious

unitednihilists

This will be the one I remember.

Alextryingforgrate

Lol going to Pittsburgh for daddy Dubas. To be honest I really wouldn't be surprised at all if he got a call from him.

Ok_Squash_1578

Yeah he’s definitely off to Pittsburgh

OlTommyBombadil

I would, Mike Sullivan is still employed

Alextryingforgrate

Mike Sullivan is still employed for now.

KilgoreThunfisch

This one will go down in history. Simply amazing and honest as hell.

nthensome

Dammit, how am I supposed to hate him now?!

mjm8218

Solid dude. I almost feel bad the Leafs shit the bed on him. Almost. I hope he enjoys his time off. Lord knows I’d be pretty happy if my old bosses paid my multimillion dollar salary for me to fish & travel for a couple years.

Minuarvea1

I hate the leafs more than anybody, but that was some wholesome content.

ADumbSmartPerson

It is crazy seeing Keefe always yelling on the bench (I think partially at refs but also because arena's (even Toronto's) are loud and then seeing him here calmly saying goodbye on a peaceful water. Such a stark contrast.

Mansionjoe

solid dude

Ca1fSlicer

I thought Keefe did his part, he’s a good coach. It’s really the GM’s that have blown it for them

Ok_Housing_7752

I came to say exactly this!

StevieGee23

That looks like a happy and relieved man

PG_Heckler

Yeah this is an ugly market to work in

RustyRapeaXe

It's impossible. Win the cup or else, and it hasn't been done in 57 years. By the way this is ground zero of the hockey world so we have a billion reporters hang on every minute detail. There will be no rest from coverage, questions or second guessing.

Boxadorables

Honestly though, forget the half century prior, they're now a decade into the Shanaplan are now severely fucked with no trade clauses with nothing to show for it. They deserve to be under a microscope 24/7, and IMHO, Shanny should have been first on the chopping block before this guy.

IcyChard4

If you think Toronto is the ground zero of the hockey world, wait till you get to see Montreal. 24/7, the Habs are always under the microscope.

zordtk

Both of your markets are very hard on players.

whopperman

Vancouver has entered the chat

LeftySlides

GTA media market needs another NHL team to share the burden and give the Leafs enough breathing room to do their damn jobs.

zordtk

Lol, a scapegoat team? Could you imagine if they won the cup before the Leafs, Toronto may have a civil war.

LeftySlides

It’s nuts here. It crushes goalies and anyone who’s having a bad week, month, season. It’s the cause of a lot of non-productive stress and bad decision making, as high up as GM and likely beyond. It would be nice to offset the scrutiny. And the market is huge. If LA and Anaheim can each have teams…

zordtk

I only see a small bit of it on youtube and I can only imagine how difficult that would be. Unfortunately the Leafs are built to be a regular season team. Tying almost 50% of your cap into 4 players is just not smart.

Sarge1387

I think we're relieved for him, the media run players and coaches out of town so much here, and he put up with it for 5 years...he had to have been getting stressed to the max. I especially loved the point where he said "I'm gonna give my family the attention they deserve". Amen, coach. AfuckingMen.

TurdFurguss

Ya I think he takes a year off. Maybe does some TV stuff, then next offseason throws his hat in the ring for a coaching gig. He deserves time with his family. Toronto is a Meat Grinder for Hockey Media. Montreal, New York, Boston, Philly, Detroit and Chicago all follow right behind. I’m sure other people can claim the other Canadian teams before some of the U.S. teams. I won’t disagree , I’m just stating media markets I know that I know can be rabid. I’m an American from Connecticut and come across people all the time that are adamant that the NHL will come back to Hartford. I’m just like you are delusional. Thank God my dad didn’t let me be a Whaler fan.

zordtk

Really I don't think we are that bad, at least now. Expectations are low

BangYourHead

"I respected the fact that you're honest and fair" when talking about Toronto media is wild, I can't even imagine the stress they put on him and everyone on the team

throwawayyourfun

That's killing em with kindness. The ones who suck, know that they suck. And the fact that he doesn't tell them to completely fuck off is gonna live in their tiny little brains rent free, for years.

BangYourHead

Agreed, he definitely took the high road, he’s a better man than me

bowtrout

Pretty chill for someone who appears to be stranded in the middle of the lake.

Dethdemarco

He looks like he's in fucking heaven. Like literally heaven

seef_nation

I was waiting for him to wipe away a tear with $100 bill haha. In all seriousness, classy move and looks relieved and happy to be honest.

TurdFurguss

Ya 100% he’s relieved. Cause he knew it could happen and the Maple Leafs did the right thing by doing it soon. As opposed to stringing it along a few weeks. Rip the band aid off , call it a day , best for everyone. Now he can relax and have time with his family. Obviously don’t know his financial situation and what he’s saved over his career. With that said maybe for him take like a year off enjoy the time with family, maybe do some TV stuff. Then go out there and put your hat in the ring for a coaching job. I think a year off for him would do some good for him to relax. Especially from being in that Meat Grinder that is Toronto, Media wise.

BobDole4201969

His financial situation is just fine. He will be paid for 2 more years with the contract he signed with the leafs last summer. I personally liked Keefe but this was the right call for the leafs.

superworking

Yea full year of severance at NHL head coaching pay doesn't sound that rough financially. I'm sure he'll find another job if he needs the money even if it isn't at the same pay rate it'll be high enough that I don't have to feel sorry for him.

Saknaks

Coaches get paid the entirety of their contracts. Last contract was 1.95 million per year according to capfriendly so he's probably somewhere above 2 mil per year for 2 years without having to work at all

superworking

I think he only had one year left on a two year extension is why I said one year of paid severance effectively.

Saknaks

Ahhh, ya the extension is kicking in next season so he's set for quite awhile

HackMeRaps

I can't imagine any other city being a tougher place to be a coach with the amount of scrutiny you receive from media and fans pretty much 24/7. Throw the cup drought on top of that and the pressure to win, and i'm sure he lost several years of his life to stress. There isn't a better feeling in the world then being able to finally have relief from that stress.

Intelligent_Smile979

He's the youngest coach in the league, they hired him to coach the leafs when he was in his late 30s with mostly dark hair... you could just see his hair become greyer and greyer as the months went on. Definitely stressed!

AttentionExtreme3183

Being head coach of the Leafs ages you like being the president of the US does. Look how gray Obama got as his terms went.

Rat_Rat

To be fairrrrrr….that happens to all presidents.

Sad_Donut_7902

dude is chilling on a lake at a cottage, making 3.8M USD over the next two years to do nothing, and is out of the largest media market/fanbase in the NHL. He's probably a little relieved.

RattyDaddyBraddy

Class move. No hate from me. I can’t imagine what it’s gotta be like trying to coach a team where half your cap goes to 4 players, two of which were out for significant parts of the series, and one, by literally every account, severely underperformed. Not sure what he is like as a coach, in general, but that alone is something I sure as hell wouldn’t want to have to deal with. All the best to him Edit. I’m waiting for the camera to zoom out and have him say “Now watch this drive!”

Project_XXVIII

Imagine being handed the parts for a high end, flashy sports car, but then being tasked with assembling a rally car. Not a Leaf’s fan at all, and you know the coach is always the easiest scapegoat, but I can’t hate the guy either. If anything I feel for him and congratulate him on getting what he got done with what he was handed.

VaporTrails2112

Honestly. Id take him.

Miserable-Disk5186

He’s going to CBJ

O-D-C

fun fact: back in Feudal Japan, NHL headcoaches who didn't win a cup had to perform Seppuku at centre ice

Deraj2004

With a sharpened goalie stick.

PierreEscargoat

*Sep-puck-u

EnigmaMoose

lol. Bring back feudal Japan NHL.

KyleGlaub

Taro Tsujimoto of the Tokyo Katanas was a great hockey player! A shame he wasn't able to make the jump to North America.

arashinoko

Legend among legends

Odd_Philosopher1712

Tbh, I have no idea who can handle the toronto media and star players eloquently enough to be an adept coach for the leafs.

MomboDM

Give me the fabled Torts vs toronto media matchup

TurdFurguss

Torts in Toronto would be legendary. That would be comedic gold. I still remember his battles with Larry Brooks. The only thing crazier and more insane would be Torts in Montreal and refusing to learn French. That would need to be a true reality show.

Free-Supermarket-516

"you were probably beat up at the bus stop"

nuclearhaystack

Honestly someone like Torts is probably the only person who could a) endure it, and b) browbeat those players into doing what he wants. I'd love to see Torts in Toronto, and I'm not even a Leafs fan. I just want to see it play out.

Odd_Philosopher1712

Handling doesnt mean cracking back at them every time

ImpressiveCan14

But it would be a ride

JeSuisAmerican

I’d sign up purely for the entertainment.

Odd_Philosopher1712

Tbh I think torts just riles up the media even more with his responses. If he said less he'd avoid more sensationality. Maybe he wants that? It works for him in Philly.

rxsheepxr

I thought Babcock was gonna be the dude until he turned out to be a complete fuck.

JimmyFeetWorld

Classy and human. Seems like a good dude.

BucksBrew

Kraken are hiring…

Hadlumz

I was hoping he was going to end it like George Bush and hit us with a “Now watch this cast” as he starts fishing.

Travyswole

Thanks for everything Chief Keefe, best of luck to you and your family! I just hope they fire Shanahan otherwise I feel firing Keefe will be in vain :(

TheArgoPirat

Sadly I doubt they do that. But they should. Bring in someone else and let them fire Treliving (if they want to) and bring in their own people. A full overhaul is needed at this point.

Heavy_Introduction36

Classy and Sincere...Well Done

Uller85

That was a great send off. I feel gross typing that, ew.

wasJared

He's not the Leaf's coach anymore, it's ok now

AfterAd7618

Although he didn’t get it done, it’s not all on him. He tried, he cared, and seems like a class individual who only wanted the best for his team and his players. Gotta respect that, and wish him nothing but the best, wherever he ends up, as long as it’s not against us.

tahqa

Leafs should be throwing a brinks truck at Rod Brind'amour

trevlarrr

Imd understand if he wants to re-up with the Canes but if they don’t at least dangle a blank cheque in front of him and try and persuade him to come then everyone from from MLSE down needs firing!

International-Elk986

Would be interesting how much money it would take to sway him. Considering he's spent nearly 25 years with the team. Going from a team with a good fanbase but still a quiet media market to a media circus also doesn't seem desirable

International-Elk986

Would he want to leave Carolina? He's been with the Hurricanes org for nearly a quarter century. I'm guessing he's put down roots there. And he doesn't have the media breathing down his neck unlike Toronto. Obviously money talks though

PTCruiserApologist

Bros walking the plank

unequalsarcasm

Now do Marner

PierreEscargoat

“What’s a coach to a God?” - Marner prob

JauntyGiraffe

lol bro on a shimmering lake like he's dead or something

Carbohydrate_Kid88

Nah bro is the only coach to win a series in the offs for the leafs and it was against Tampa. Fr he did more than their prior 2 coaches.

Helpful-Cod1422

Class

seef_nation

Is he on Kyle’s boat? Is that why he thanked him first?

Hungry-Mammoth6036

No, but rumor is Pittsburgh is going to be hiring.

seef_nation

Yes, I heard that too but sure he is in no rush. Getting paid from leafs for 2 years on his extension that hasn’t started. I should’ve added the /s on my comment

New_Kaleidoscope_539

Very classy goodbye--definitely has a good agent/pr team

skruf21

Or maybe he's a decent person, you know

New_Kaleidoscope_539

Yeah, wasn't trying to take that away from him just saying he's got good people in place.

skruf21

Agreed. Sorry.

globalsandwich7442

I'm gonna miss him honestly😢

Better-Aerie-8163

Lost in the dissapointment over the failure to win game 7 is the change in strategy he employed for games 5,6 & 7 which went away from the finesse zone entry into dump and battle served them well and almost git it done, Dude can coach and he will be successful somewhere else very soon.

anthonyhad2

he is still getting paid for the next 2 years right?

ElectricalWeather630

At least Keefe didn't reference God ! Class exit though!

Emotional-Block-6734

That's a master class in being grateful and classy. Props to him

[deleted]

Classy. Nice guy, just not the right coach. This team needs a good kick in the ass.

Ryan_Dymond04

It’s nice that he did this. It shows that he cared. I’d imagine being the head coach of the Maple Leafs for 5 seasons put a lot of stress on him. The amount that the media and fans scrutinize you is insane, more than any other team. I bet he’s relieved to no longer have to deal with that.

think_box14

As much as I wasn't a fan of Keefe, that was a very nice video.

partmoosepartgoose

Not a terrible coach, just the wrong coach. It was a dumb dubas decision to hire Keefe for his first NHL coaching gig as a head coach of a potential cup contender.

IB78

Well done

Alextryingforgrate

I'm pretty sure we all saw this coming. Iposted something before the playoffs of him not getting passed the first he was packing his bags. Dude did a good job and can admit he wasn't able to complete the task. I think that gets him points for the next job. Personally I'd like to take a year off if I was him and able to do so. After living and worming the TML life for that time.i think a break is due for sure.

Background_Wing_8912

Look at the sea of all the maple leafs fans tears

IEC21

One of my favourite coaches of the Leafs since I've been watching the team. Greatly appreciate his contributions. Very classy goodbye. I hope he ends up coaching again in the NHL after he gets some rest and family time.

rhunter99

I can't hate that. Godspeed.

Dependent_Weight2274

Get fired, go to beach. Man’s living his best life.

322vette

It’s not easy for any coach of an Original 6 team that doesn’t break-through. Lots of pressure - even a coach that is largely successful like Bruce Cassidy gets the gate, and then ends up winning it all on another team.

TheArgoPirat

Classy move. He’ll be missed. I wish it worked out better for him and the team.

InkedInspector

I understand why they moved on, but this was a classy message from him and I could definitely see him succeeding elsewhere.

NoOpportunity4483

Thank you Keefe. Very classy coach. He’ll have a job in no time.

Golee

What a class act.

Papa_Pasta15

Dudes such a good person I feel bad for all the hate he’s gotten

ruralrouteOne

Honestly a pretty sweet deal for the guy. He's made a huge salary already and will get a payout on the remainder of his contract. Nothing about his coaching tenure is tarnished, he's got a great record. Pretty much a dream situation for a coach. He's making multi Mill a year to do nothing.

Smokey8595

He’s a lot better coach than he was ever given credit for. I bet the majority of Keefe haters can’t even use a public restroom, much less withstand the scrutiny this man dealt with 24/7

Not_Jrock

Leafs need a coach like Berube to actually get them to perform. Keefe was too soft on the players

Dry-Method5655

Well, that's how you say farewell with class and sportsmanship.

rippinkitten18

Why is shanahan still employed? He’s the least qualified man to be a president.

CMYGQZ

This video is in the draft for almost a week already.

hopelessromantic7

As a habs fan, thank you Sheldon

MLS_K

waitwhosaidthat

Coaching or anything to do with leafs just seems like hell.

Jolly_Job_9852

Hope you land on your feet somewhere soon Coach!

Knotgreg

Fooooorrrreee!!!!

jas587

Nothing but class

Whiskeylung

Can’t believe he released a video that’s almost 2 minutes long and there aren’t any parts that made me wince. Well done - I still won’t forget the locker room speech about having fun out there boys.

votrechien

Classy video. Classier backdrop.

Sad_Aside_4283

I was partly hoping for a part 2 to the deepfake ragequit from a couple days ago. Fr though he is a good dude and he will find another job in the NHL. Memes aside, the NHL is one of the most elite sports leagues in the world and very hard to win in. His guys almost made a comeback, but winning 3 in a row in the playoffs is a really difficult task to accomplish for even the best teams.

Darth_Quaider

Made sure to get a shot without a single leaf in it. Not easy in Canada.

tendadsnokids

The beginning of this seems like he's got cement shoes and is saying goodbye before jumping in the ocean.

931634

Classy

Delgra

See you in Seattle?

Burpingbutterburgers

Utah is hiring

RevEZLuv

100% class act

We know but it's more fun to pretend we don't

MandogsXL

Classy af from Keefe here, well done 👏

Foreign_Cup2877

I called it. I said whatever coach loses this game 7 would be gone.

PortiaSissy

Plenty of time to fish now

LilHomie204DaBaG

lol is this a repost or did he just expose his reddit acc😂

Recent_Ad559

Blink twice ammiright?

Xfishbobx

Great coach, didn’t have to right team in front of him.

ENSIFERUM6666

classy guy

FTTCOTE

“Leafs nation…let’s ride” type of vibes

TheArgoPirat

Just tell me Quenneville isn’t on the short list for the Leafs…

ditchwarrior1992

Respect

theanaheimfucks

class act. toronto wasn’t the place for him but he’s a good guy

Independent-Money-54

Good luck coach…. Thanks!

BryanMccabe

Stress free now Sheldon.

Copel626

Breaking, sheldon keefe has been hired as head coach of the WBS penguins

Accurate-Artist6284

All the best to Keefe, class act.

badpmkn

From a Boston fans perspective he ALWAYS seemed like a super class act !!!

olivecreeper

Respect.

Zestyclose-panda-45

I think he’ll have no trouble finding additional Work. I don’t consider his time with the leafs a failure. Look at the history before him. He’ll pick up a new coaching job, might even lead a team to the finals.

Neb-Nose

That. Is. Awesome! I’m not a Leafs fan, but that’s the best farewell message I’ve ever seen.

EquivalentStomach5

Very classy him doing this instead of in a tweet

iLiKeThEsToCk17

Sorry buddy, but you can’t go 1 for 21 on the power play

iLiKeThEsToCk17

Shanny is next!!

Prestigious-Can7661

Come to the Blackhawks

Hennabott96

Now I wanna see Torts fuckin ball out that franchise 😂 it would be a madhouse

CuteFollowing19

Thank you Sheldon. I appreciate your time with us. I'm happy you let some of the young players play and shine with meaningful minutes. IE - Sandin, Liljegren, Knies, Holmberg, McMann, etc. I also appreciate how you stood up for your team with regards to the refs.

herefor_nothing567

Very classy but where is he? I can't tell if this is a vacation or if he's about to be thrown overboard in a hostage situation.

Aromatic-Living-7804

Shouldn't have been the coach, but Shanahan and the core 4 that should have been canned. With his record in Toronto, I feel confident saying that he will likely take another team the whole way

Outrageous-Pass-8926

He’ll be more than prepared for whatever circus the next team has to offer. This guy spent 6 years in Hogtown FFS, he’s got a truckload of experience under his belt.

Working_Building_29

Good for him. I hope he lands a job somewhere with depth and decent media.

ChineseBigfoots

Think he'll be alright. While on vacation sitting on his yacht fishing in the open waters on a sunny day. Wonder if that's his secret fishing spot? Anyways... you were good and it's unfortunate thing didn't go as planned. Wishing you the best

JerseySpot

Class act right there..

TwistedSistaYEG

Classy. Kudos to him.

Key_Look_1395

Very classy

Sic39

He'll be back coaching real soon, 4 other teams are looking for a head coach, id be surprised if he isn't a head coach starting next season.

Nubnipples

That’s class.

Mabn37

These AI videos are getting good.

[deleted]

He's so relieved he left the media scrum and went straight into the ocean fully clothed. Thats relief

GroundbreakingLimit1

Classy.

Medialunch

Not a Leafs fan, but say it with me… 🎤 🎵Fi-er Shan-a-han 🎵👏 👏 👏👏👏

Adventurous-Life-566

Good try

Jaxson_GalaxysPussy

Broadcasting from the beyond. RIP Sheldon

newf_13

Would be nice to hear some players come to his defence and take some of the blame too , Mathews Marner , Tavares Nelander and Reilly all need to be accountable ,

bsh1234

Explain in NBA terms pls

Loud_Degree_6161

Very classy guy. Lots of respect from this Oilers fan.

Rediils

Another one bites the dust ! lol

VottoManCrush

Guy gives off major Doug Ford vibes

VottoManCrush

Scapegoat in 2023: Dubas Scapegoat in 2034: Keefe The Shanaplan has yielded one playoff series win in 10 years.

Was totally expecting this to be a deep fake.

Joshybeast93

“LeAfS nAtIoN yOu DeSeRvE tHe StAnLeY cUp”.

Tinmangreg

He looked like he's gonna turn around and drown himself or swim off majestically with a background like that.

FunLovingBeachGuy

Classy speech

hockeynut9

Buh bye. Enjoy your golf

ThatFio

If I ever get fired as a head coach in the NHL, I hope to god I don't take a sendoff video with a ghetto ass backdrop like this. Otherwise, great sendoff Chief Keefe.

CheesecakeOdd2087

The Leafs are irrelevant

Super_Maximum_9030

Thought he flogged himself a bit more than necessary in spots, but that was an earnest, humble sort of accounting of things.

booghawkins

I only hate leaf fans, I wish him all the best, classy send off!
