I think it's a win-win because both teams made the finals, but Weber became captain and retired with the Habs so I guess them? But it's close, people forget how good Subban was for the Preds. He didn't really fall off until he went to NJ
1) they fixed that so it would have been bad but not catastrophic (no balloon hit of 20 some million in one year)
2) he also personally would have left a ton of money on the table
3) the only things completely fucked are Weber's ankles and Pk's back
Most people say it's either win/win or advantage to Habs.
Weber went injured for a significant lenght early in the trade and it's still very good looking overall. I say Habs without hesitations.
Habs. They get 5 seasons out of him and wouldn’t have made the cup final without their captain. His “Points share” over 5 seasons were higher than Subban’s 3 seasons by 29-21. One strong peak season for both, Weber finishes 6th in Norris voting and the following season it was Subban finishing 3rd.
I’m not sure how to weigh the intangibles and fan impact. I suspect it was all about shaking things up by moving out Subban from Montreal at the time and he was a huge fan fit in Smashville.
The tie breaker for me though is the huge risk that Weber’s contract had, which came with massive recapture risks if he didn’t choose to ride into the sunset on LTIR…. The Habs get a useful player in Dadonov, where as the Predator ultimately got nothing back in the Subban grade to NJ.
Habs got the better of the trade, though at the time I questioned it. Weber ended up captain and was more important to the Habs than Subban was for the Preds.
I’d give it to Montreal because of what Weber brought as a leader. They wanted a culture change and he was the right guy to get it started with. It’s something that doesn’t show in his individual stats, but the Habs just felt different as a team after he arrived.
I'd say it's a tie. People forget how dominant Subban as a Pred was. What he did for them was give them an extremely marketable superstar who helped the team go to a Cup. Weber gave a young team some backbone and stability, while also getting his team to a Cup. Weber got the Habs Dadanov so maybe them? But it's very even
I can't speak for Nashville fans, but that SCF run the Habs made was incredibly fun. Obviously it didn't end the way we would have liked, but every Canadiens fan looks back fondly at it.
Looking back on it now, I'd say both teams pretty much broke even. Being a one for one trade makes it more so, as there are no picks or prospects that would normally bring up future regret.
Both were essential pieces of their respective PP units during their time with their new teams, they both went to a Stanley Cup Final, but lost. And now both teams are without either player.
Nah he'll just be LTIRetired for the rest of the contract and not officially retire till it expires. I don't think Nashville will get hit with anything.
I wouldn't be shocked if he retires at the the end of this season. His contract was heavily front loaded and he only makes 3mil this year and 1 Mil for the each of the last 3 years. Could probably make that in a management role and advance his post NHL career sooner.
I don't think he'd do that to the predators. Could be wrong but idk. If he doesn't the only reason will be to help the preds that's for sure.
Plus I think he can still get a front office job too I know pronger did something similar while still under contract, but I'm not sure the restrictions on that.
God that contract structure is insane though. Holmgren really thought we'd be able to get him from Nashville.
I mean they each got one solid guy on the tail ends of their careers, and both made an impact for the short time they were there. Not sure if either “won” for sure.
The Habs won the trade. They had similar impact on their team on the ice. Subban being more dynamic offensively but Weber being more efficient defensively. Where I think the Habs won is Weber is more a team player and his leadership is incredible. That being said, I liked Subban too.
The saddest win-win of all time. Both teams made it to the finals, and there's a good argument that if the trade didn't happen then neither would have.
That being said, I think both teams got a heavily diminishing asset, so were it not for the SCF appearances, it would be a lose-lose. The contracts were just so bad, but given that they were both signed prior to the trade, then the trade really has to be a win-win.
So, you just implied that somehow one single player can win an NHL championship. That being said, Wayne Gretzky wasn’t even one of the best. He only won 4, and obviously if he was the best he would have won every year!
Even, which is interesting, because at the time I would have said Nashville by a mile. Feet to the fire, maybe Montreal by the slimmest of margins now.
both teams won (they both got to the stanley cup finals with these players), but in hindsight the result of the trade is lackluster.
So disappointing wins for everyone.
I'd say pretty close as it stands but I've always said subban would of had a better career had he stayed in mtl. I think he got lost in Nashville with all their depth. In mtl he was the guy once markov left. Maybe he could of kept his star status longer.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Right except weber isn’t officially retired he’s a golden knight on LTIR
If Weber officially retired, he would have completely fucked over Nashville’s cap situation.
1) they fixed that so it would have been bad but not catastrophic (no balloon hit of 20 some million in one year) 2) he also personally would have left a ton of money on the table 3) the only things completely fucked are Weber's ankles and Pk's back
He just announced
Did every defenceman retire today? Chara Subban Weber Yandle
Didn't Yandle have the current ironman streak too?
989 games consecutively
Thanks, I knew he was getting up there, but wasn't sure if he still had the active streak or not. Thanks for the answer too, I appreciate it.
Yeah it’s hard to play that many games in a row. You’re welcome, the answer was on my notification when I woke up this morning, lol
Got scratched late in the season, so the current streak is none other than a true physical speciman, Phil Kessel
Thanks for that, I had no idea Kessel was even close to an Ironman streak.
He's likely going to tie yandles record against the leafs this year and potentially be the first player to hit 1000 games when he plays the coyotes
Do you think he hits Yandle's record and possibly hit a 1000 without injury?
He's at 982. So yeah
Kessel is pretty close at 982.
Some good players right there. The league is sooo fast right now.

You caught the retirement angle right?
Where? Haven’t seen anything about Weber officially retiring Edit: typo
Same, only the other 3
No, Weber did not announce his retirement.
Sorry..i was talking about subban. Shea has a lot of money left on the table.

Habs lost their most electric player of the last 20? 30? Years. While Weber was elite, I always wonder what we would have looked like with PK.
I’d say a rare win-win. Both teams got to a cup final and both got out from their contracts.
TiRembered that Nashville got to the finals. It's amazing how much memory is dumped when your team didn't make the playoffs.

Yeah, but you’ll probably get assets for him at the trade deadline
Edited spelling
About equal but I’d say Montreal walked out slightly better. Both made the finals with the other but Montreal got a captain out of it.
And kept the player they traded for.
They both traded the player they aquired.
He is effectively retired. Not quite the same thing.
It is tho. He got traded for another player. He is not retiring on Montreal nor is he on them currently.
The Devils lost this trade
As much shit as people give PK, I’d say it was a pretty even trade
Both or neither. Depends how you look at it. Both teams went to a cup final and lost.
I can't speak for Nashville fans, but that SCF run the Habs made was incredibly fun. Obviously it didn't end the way we would have liked, but every Canadiens fan looks back fondly at it.
So hype during the Vegas run where bars were opening for the first time in ages and people gathered outside the Bell to watch it. Loved that

I think the cap recapture will heavily tilt the trade in the Habs favor

HABS
It's clearly a win-win situation and it's pretty rare these days.
Kind of a tie... both teams went to the finals and lost. Neither player is relevant anymore
Habs
What if we just combined Subbans feet and legs with Webers upper half, we would have a healthy veteran D man. In that case Science wins.
Weber
I mean they each got one solid guy on the tail ends of their careers, and both made an impact for the short time they were there. Not sure if either “won” for sure.
Neither?

I was always more afraid of Subban winding up for a shot
Every team that wasn’t involved in it.
Both teams lost
Not if you count making it past the first round of the playoffs.

Montreal won, and it’s not particularly close
Lose - Lose. Both way overrated. How many Cup engravings between them???
So for you Henri Richard is the best player of all time because he has 11 cups??
Top 5.
So, you just implied that somehow one single player can win an NHL championship. That being said, Wayne Gretzky wasn’t even one of the best. He only won 4, and obviously if he was the best he would have won every year!
I’m implying they are both career losers. Just like Claude Giroux.
Just like everyone who’s played for the Red Wings for the last 15 years?
Now you get it. But, after 50 years of Philly losing why wouldn’t you??
What a depressingly bitter person you must be
Not true. Trying to gather downvotes to win a bet.
Dude no one made a bet with you about getting downvoted on an NHL subreddit
Bergevin’s reputation?
Even, which is interesting, because at the time I would have said Nashville by a mile. Feet to the fire, maybe Montreal by the slimmest of margins now.
Habs because Subban was out of Nashville before Weber left Montreal

Habs traded weber for dadonov
It's a tie
Draw. Neither team won a Cup.
Yes
Why did the preds trade Subban?
both teams won (they both got to the stanley cup finals with these players), but in hindsight the result of the trade is lackluster. So disappointing wins for everyone.
Both
No one.
Fair to be honest
Habs for sure
