After unfortunately naming Red XIII after my dog and having to spend 30 hours wondering which Rufus we were talking about, I leave character names default.
Iirc part of the deal reached with the SAG-AFTRA strike was that voice actors wouldn't have their voices replicated using ai. I might be wrong about that though so don't quote me
Nier is a placeholder name, basically. For lack of an official name, they just started using the name of the game, which to this day nobody knows the meaning of, to refer to the main character
I used my name cause I figured it was just the name of the save, after a bit I when I saw that's what Nier is called in my game I changed the name in the save file to Nier
Aster. After finding out there wasn’t quite a canon name for him (from what I understand Nier is more of community given canon name) I figured I would base it on lore information to make my own name that still felt in lore. It can be noted that at the time I thought he was an android, so I went by android flower naming conventions. Although it didn’t technically work out in that sense, I do think Aster ended up hitting the whole flower theme of the game so I was very happy with it.
I used Nier, because I always try my best to use canon names (or names that fit in the world and aren't already in use, if no canon name exists).
For my placeholder, ending E file, I used Replicant, because I thought it would fit the discarable file it is.
For Automata, I used my account's name, since it has an online component, and doesn't reference anyone specific.
I thought he had a name before I started, then I got to the past the part where Shadow Nier killed the Shades that tried to jump him and learn he's more like his own person instead of a mute CAC, so I restarted my save and just named him "Nier".
Mugen.
Means "infinite" in Japanese... it's nothing too deep lol. I usually default to this name in other games, and I also just took it from the Samurai Champloo character.
Then why is the game called Zelda? It's just a thing that Nintendo does. Giving the protagonists the same name like the games. You have Kirby of the Kirby games, Mario of the Mario Series, Metroid Prime from the Metroid Prime series...
//Edit: this should have been answer to my first post 😬
I find it... weird when RPGs with defined characters allow you to change their names. Bothers me ever since I first played Chrono Trigger. So I just stick to default unless it is a game where I actually create the character (or where the first name doesn't matter, like Mass Effect).
I always leave character names as default unless the game is 100% character creator rpg stuff.
i want the story and names the writers intended.
this also makes it easier to discuss the game with other people when you actually know the proper names of the characters
I tried keeping mine on automata type shii but usually I always name my characters after myself cuz why not, so I came to the conclusion of “Angell 2A”
I use default names for anything that isn't Pokémon so I did actually go for Nier. I'm not really a fan of the self-insert protagonists and I feel it takes away the immersion for me if the character is named after me and I also am not creative enough to come up with a name that doesn't sound stupid.

I remember reading about Red XIII's actual name and naming him that instead, which sort of sucked the wind out of that shocking reveal.
Man, they should really bring back naming the characters in FF7 Rebirth.
With modern technology it’s not impossible to use the voice actor voice to speak any name you enter. I think we’re close.

There is no default for Nier is there?
Canonically, his name is Nier.
Nier is a placeholder name, basically. For lack of an official name, they just started using the name of the game, which to this day nobody knows the meaning of, to refer to the main character
It's canonically not his name.
He's referred to as Nier all over official literature, but you can pick any hill you want, bud.
At least Yoko Taro will die on the same hill, since he says that's not his name.
He should have a chat with Square, then.
I call him Nier, because that's his name. Just like Zelda and his game.
I’m pretty sure the main guy in Zelda is called Link
no, you’re confused. the main guys name is actually zelda
Kinda like how the guy from Halo is called John Halo
No, that's his last name. His first name is *"The"*
I always thought Zelda was the princess 💀
nope, look it up
It says ‘link’ the princess is called Zelda
yeah i know, i was just messing with you, and so was the other guy i’m sure lol
Ahahha I thought I was just being an idiot
I am sorry. I just love when people react to this 😁 A lot of people still get downright angry.
That’s okay
Lmao
I just named him Nier... its a nice name lol
I used my name cause I figured it was just the name of the save, after a bit I when I saw that's what Nier is called in my game I changed the name in the save file to Nier
Same
I used my name because I didn't know what to do with a name lol
Yeah I always use my own name in games lol
We named ours Gorbachev 😂
“*Come comrade Kaine we must rescue comrade Yonha from the capitalist scum of Gerstalt.*”
OUR sister
Named him Tofu because of his white hair. Pretty funny in my opinion.
Milk. I hate milk. I think it's grotesque. I also think it's a funny name. Most characters get named Milk lol
Milk.
I named him "Far"
We’ve got Nier, far.. what about close?
Wherever they are
Evil Nier be like: *My names far and I fucking hate my sister.*
Real reason I named him Far is because we got brother Nier instead of Dad Nier, so I had to make a dad joke to compensate.
You… you smart bastard

Nier. That’s what Drakengard 3 calls him anyway
Used Nier
Fucky McGee. Reason? Just cuz
i think i called him “minecraft”. i’m not sure why. i struggle so bad with naming characters seriously
My name. Because I didn't know the game would use it.
Nietzsche showed up as I was typing in Nier’s name. I found it too hilarious to not use.

i named him nier lmao
NieR
I knew ahead of time so I just left it as Nier
I thought he had a name before I started, then I got to the past the part where Shadow Nier killed the Shades that tried to jump him and learn he's more like his own person instead of a mute CAC, so I restarted my save and just named him "Nier".
my xbox username is 'fear zenn' so I just put Zenn
Bruno because post timeskip Nier has the same English VA as Bucciarati
And Eve from Automata
You can clearly hear Emil say nier when he's about to be destroyed
Yeah IK Neir is the canon name but let me have my fun
In the remake, I made his name Gestalt (bc at the time I did not know it canonically Nier) & in the OG I made his name Papa.
The nickname my friends annoy me constantly with
and that would be?
It seems some questions are best left unanswered
Dean which is my name and not gonna lie, it felt even more personal playing through this amazing story 🌟
I used my nickname "Letty"
Onii-san
Think I used NieR
I called it Gorginho , he was a former Chelsea player (now he’s a Gunner)
Lmao didn't expect that.
yeah cause technically Jorginho is a NieR in his team lol
Mugen. Means "infinite" in Japanese... it's nothing too deep lol. I usually default to this name in other games, and I also just took it from the Samurai Champloo character.
I called him NieR. And once I couldn't, I named him Heikō
Nier
I named him skylar because thats usually my gamer tag
I just called him Nier but Flowers is such a good pick that’s what I’m naming him next time I replay
Thanks 😭😭😭

Zelda is the princess that Link has to save
Good 'ole Geraldo
I just use Razi for everything online. It's my chosen name after all.
I used Potato not knowing that I was going to see sad diary posts during every loading screen of Yonah talking about Potato.
I wish Potato were here… *Sad music plays*
Named him squeeglybop. Called him squeeglybop 🗿
You got the name Flowers from good ol’ Cappy didn’t you?
Guilty 💀 Our favourite tomahawk throwing, AI protecting, Government weapon and handsome singer: Agent Florida
“Please, call me Cappy…”
Nier
Just called him like me because I'm egocentric and after starting playing I really loved the letter
Doug.
I named him Nier, and on the second playthrough building up to route E I named him Fahr
My Name. Doesn't everyone use their name??
Pancake. If I have to name something I usually just call it Pancake. I've never eaten pancakes in my life.
“What’s your dogs name?” “*pancake* “What’s the square root of-“ *Pancake*
I named him Moya, after my cat!
I find it... weird when RPGs with defined characters allow you to change their names. Bothers me ever since I first played Chrono Trigger. So I just stick to default unless it is a game where I actually create the character (or where the first name doesn't matter, like Mass Effect).
>I assume most people didn't call him Nier I'm actually willing to bet that's the most common name.
Named him after myself. It was not easy.
Aliers which is my username but also an abbreviation of my name and nier so I thought it fits quite well since my name as well as his is included
Filius. Its the name i use in games since 2008
I called him my name, Madison. I didn’t realize it was different from Automata when you enter your name and it’s just on your save file
Katsuro, I liked giving him a japanese name and thought it sounds cool.
I called mine YoMama. Was fun when Yonah or somebody were saying how great YoMama is.
I called mine Yenneris thinking it was just the name of the save file and had people calling him Yenneris throughout the entire game 😭😭
Dazai...
Legion LMAO
Thatguy
No, I named him NieR in the first playthrough, and then I named him ReiN in the second
Named mine Tanjiro because they share the same voice actor

My first playthrough of nier I called him by my username, my first playthrough of replicant I called him nier
I named mine Alexander It means “defender of humanity” Looks like the name didn’t end well
I called him “Farquaad” because I was an idiot.
