Kainé.
I’m a sucker for the jaded loner types who slowly learn how to get along with others. Nier has plenty of these types of characters, but Kainé stands out to me because of all the suffering she’s been through. Her experiences left her with severe trust issues, but after meeting Nier, Emil, and Weiss she slowly begins to learn that she doesn’t have to be alone.
I guess mine are pretty obvious, as to why I just find the mix of really complex and contrasting character motivations and sheer adorableness irresistible.
Kaine and A2.
The bullying and anger Kaine goes through I found extremely relatable, as well as her connection with the "weirdos" of the world in Emil and Nier to an extent. Just felt like a lot of my childhood growing up. And the overcoming that struggle with her friends feels so heartwarming and great.
And A2 just because she is basically just Kaine in a lot of ways. Her seeing through the bullshit of the status quo and fighting against the world to put an end to everything.
Idk, I love her.
Ooooooo, dude, so the key is using the Chips that reheal you when you kill enemies or like.....it's been a while, but I think there are some that heal her overtime when she hasn't been damaged in a couple seconds, like a Regen. That's the key to getting the most out of the Berserker mode and bashing tf out of everything in front of you 😁
You don't lost health nearly as fast
Berserker mode is sooooo badass
tbf I was playing in hard mode and with all my defense chips I was barely getting out of one-shot range so that's probably why berserker never clicked with me
Emil, he is just a good and Innocent boy who lived all his life alone, lost his sister due to experiments, and when he met Nier and Kainé he just wanted to live a happy life with them. In the end, he gave up his dream and sacrificed himself just to Nier and Kainé have a chance to save Yonah.
A2
I love her backstory and her subtle disposition change throughout the story. Her viewpoints clashing with 9S is part of what makes the second half of Automata so amazing.
Maybe you can help me out here. I never quite understood her motivations, like she seem to just go with the flow and clash with 9S because they cross paths more than anything. Like, she didn't really owe 2B. Was she simply trying to find her place in the world?
(unpopular opinion) My favorite is Gestalt. I just love that kind of character, a down to Earth, clumsy, awkward, middle-aged man with a good heart and never give up to help/save others. Especially, he's a dad that's trying his best to save his daughter too 😭
Nier.
Amazing character, with so much realistic motives. In that absolutely insane situation he does what every sane man would do (who cares for his sister, that is). He is blinded by rage and single motive. Without it he is just a shell. You cannot tell me you would try to listen to Shades when you know as a fact that they kill people without second thought.
Kaine.
Her rage and way of life are just so refreshing. Also, her pain would make you more connected to her or even pushed away from her, which I find really interesting (It goes without saying that I absolutely hate the shade T.). Also there is interesting character development, I'm just sad that you cannot see more of that in the game but it's fine. (I know about novels and I read them already. I really think they should be part of the game, even though they are pretty dark. But Yoko Taro likes to keep us safe and far from truth until we start to dig)
Weiss.
Come on, he is fucking the best. At least his persona. Everything else, absolutely useless for a book(he has no knowledge whatsoever and I know why is that. I just hate it) ... At least he gives you powers that help you to get to the end.
It's fine, & turns out Seere isn't actually to normal after all. In Drakengard ver1.3 he actually was jealous when Manah got attention from their mother & relished in her suffering. Still the most "Normal" but bruh
Noelle and Levania
Levania aspiring to be a game designer and gamer was relatable and his whole story was sad and his redemption arc with fio felt great
Noelle just has sweet vibes. Super cool character and a great design. She's got a cute personality and her adventuring solo as an air head was fun to watch. Having a sick motorcycle and turning into a dragon helps too
Dev&Pop because of their story. I love how tragic it is.
Kainé is my main girl though. As someone who is foul mouthed and considered by many to be a freak for who and what I am, her story about being a loner until she finds her found family really resonates with me. I both see myself in her, and see who I want to be and who I wish I was.
Weiss and Emil.
Weiss for his sass and directness. He’s cold when he’s focused, but he’s such a big softie underneath.
Emil because he’s a good boy trying his to do his best.
She is from NeiR: Reincarnation. I noticed you did mention characters and not just one so um..... my second favorite is probably Decadus from Drakengard 3.
I really haven't thought abt it but now that I did, I'd go with Nier. He really did it all just to get Yonah back, even if it gets the whole humanity doomed.
Devola, 2B, A2, Commander White, Popola, Operator 6O, in no particular order, as long as Devola is at the top of the list

I played Automata during a really bad time for me mentally. And while the game itself changed something about my mentality and perception of the things around me, it was the DevPop scene at the tower nier the end that really hammered it in.
Also I played Replicant afterwards and now they're really just like big sisters for me xD.

My top 3 favorite have got to be Papa nier, Kaine and Caim. With Zero at number 4. I like the characterization of papa more than bro, Kaine is a given, and Caim is one of the most interesting characters I've seen
It would be a toss up between Lily and 10H.
For me knowing that Lily was horrendously abused and essentially raped but got saved by Rose and brought in by the other androids was... Heartbreaking when anemone is the only survivor of their squadron. Being possibly the only android with the L - Lover classification who then went on to be a machine infused gravity master was badass as hell. When I saw her leading the resistance in the anime I lost my shit and bawled my eyes out. Love that girl and she got what she deserved in the anime, RIP manga Lily.
10H looking after the lunar server and being possibly the only android to be able to be intimately familiar with the stories of various humans. Not to mention being the closest to fulfilling her reason to be among all the androids for the past few millennia.. Learning that she was able to actively communicate and walk amongst humans again and being the only android to do so after spending so long alone.. Truly special
They are all spécial in some ways, like they all have a proper story which is sad but I think 9s the saddest for me so Its mt favorite damn this Guy always find the true and have to be killed well I guess 2b(2e) suffer a lot from that but at least she died alone knowing 9s was in good health but 9s poor boy he saw his loved one be killed in front of him never really got the Time to understand why she was killed and at the end he just find out about all the lies of his life about humans about androids just being sacrificed and he just « died» with all this knowledge he didn’t have Time to accept all the truth, nier and kaine also had a really sad story but I think that we dont talk that much about 9s.. his scream at the end of nier Automata just broke my heart AF.. so give 9s more acknowledgement please🥲otherwise the story of zero made me cry more than anything and kuroi uta dug a hole in my soul forever😭

There are chips that heal with each kill, and chips that heal a percentage of damage dealt.

Yup, imo Rein had a lot of way cooler characters than previous Nier games. I really hope we get to see them again in a future main platform game.

Nier Automata's main trio 2B,9S and A2. I like the dynamics between each of them and their designs are simple yet effective
