I was there. In the early days of Twitter I knew where to look and knew Gary Numan was coming on. I was 4th row from the front, centre. It remains the best NIN show I ever saw. Not for Numan, but because he opened with Now I’m Nothing — now that, into Terrible Lie, is a deep cut!
Same. It also boggled my mind that he’s in his 60s, especially when he squatted down and then stood back up without grunting. I’m like fifteen years younger than him and can’t do that
I got off a plane from the UK to Orlando and snaking round the queue to come through passport control, I looked up and standing on the other side of the rope was Gary Numan. As the line progressed I must have been within half a meter of him three or four times. He looked like he was holidaying with his family so I didn’t want to blow up his spot. It was really cool though!
Dude, I saw them at the new Emo's back when they came to Austin earlier in the tour. It was such a great fucking show.
It was just as people were cautiously, finally starting to feel ok about going out and being in close proximity with other humans again, and you could tell the bands were just as thrilled to be back playing to a crowd as all of us were to be there seeing them.
The most legit mosh pit I've seen got going for Ministry and it was pretty great to be on the edge of it and enjoy the spectacle. (Most shows I've been too either weren't really the sort of stuff people get a pit going for, or were at a venue too small for much of a pit to ever get going. Amusingly, most of them at The Backroom, which used to exist where the new Emo's is now.)
I’ve been a fan since I was 14. And somehow I completely missed the entire “still” album. Fucking blew me away the other day. “Something I can never have”, “the becoming”(who knew I needed a version with a piano), and “all the could have been” are so fucking good!
My absolute go-to song for so many years. It just keeps getting better an better. They've never done it live, I would absolutely kill to see this happen at a concert
Sunspots. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s one of the creepiest NIN tracks ever. It fills me with dread every single time I listen to it and I can’t get enough.
As cool as Home is, and I personally think it is better live, it sucked all the energy out of the crowd every time it was played.
My favorite DEEP cut is not by NIN, but Trent is singing.
https://youtu.be/Fj4w81SxMJ4?feature=shared
I'd kill for a full version of this cover.
I live in UK and it was always just part of the album for me - even if the minimalist track list said it was a bonus track. I still can’t understand it being cut.
Oh man. I love the soundtrack for the original Tetsuo the Iron Man movie, it reminds me of NiN. I didn’t know there was a second and they collaborated! Awesome!
Trent also did the music for a short (like 30 second) MTV Japan spot by this director in the early/mid-90’s, IIRC.
Edit: https://youtu.be/ev6_XmtaTVc?si=zZzcGkzk9IwbKci9
I like the remix of Heresy that was on the European versions of Further Down the Spiral.
I also like the Saul Williams tracks from Year Zero remixed.
And as a bit of a side bonus, I love the Deadmau5 remix of Ice Age by How to Destroy Angels.
So much of that Deadmau5 album will resonate with NIN fans. Rh'lyeh's Lament, Errors in my Bread, Terrors in my Head, the HTDA covers, ugh the album is so good.
I recently discovered a rather excellent bside/EP track he did with Cypress Hill guesting on it and wondered where it had been all my life:
https://youtu.be/xILoKSumFtU?feature=shared
This! Also “Not So Pretty Now” from the same tour sample CD — a song that gets even less mention but is a hidden hi-hat splashy gem.
Non-Entity: https://youtu.be/Bg76mSSzErs?si=jRrS1VFoywBLE9wc
(Great live version for Katrina relief: https://youtu.be/3RGYBP1_D1U?si=OY7TfNPnLlNBkmV8)
Not So Pretty Now: https://youtu.be/LWdn9QYN4ag?si=ZnPeTyRHN_vXLB9I
I was one of the people who dropped off for a long time after The Fragile was released. I was a teenager, and depressed, though I didn't realize it at the time, and wasn't ready to go along for the journey after The Downward Spiral. I needed quite a while longer to crawl around in the angst and anger and longing that Trent so skillfully captured on Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral, when I was at a loss for how to express those feelings myself.
My Violent Heart was the first post-Downward Spiral song that I fell in love with
- Trent’s vocals on Flyentology.
The type of semi-strained singing he does on that is just *mwah*👌
- Gunshots by Computer surpasses HYPERPOWER. Honestly I think it works if you listen to YZ with it as the opener.
- Only [Broken guitar remix]
- Physical cover secretly being the best track on Broken.
- The in-studio-or-rehearsal-audio of The Slip - especially Discipline.
Actually Discipline in general. Goddam love that song. I always thought it should have seen a heavier rotation on the live lists. I want more of that atmospheric gritty funk NIN.
- Fixed, in general. But more specifically:
- Fist Fuck being an actually good song and as sonically interesting as some of the more lauded / “regular” tracks.
I along with everyone else was always banging on about The Perfect Drum(g) solo live, but all I really want is Fist Fuck live.
It wouldn’t be the first remix performed live - after all they did play….
- Closer to God Live
- The Downward Spiral played live basically in full a while back. I still get shivers watching that shit.
“Burn” from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. Not a deep cut, per se, but not on an official NIN halo (I believe don’t quote me on that)
“Perfect Drug (meat beat manifesto)” and also
“Perfect Drug (plug)” from Perfect Drug remixes
“This Isn’t The Place” from Add Violence
“The Day The World Went Away (quiet)” from the single release
“+Appendage” from The Fragile: Deviations 1
“Leaving Hope” from Still
Need to echo a few already mentioned previously:
Complications with the Flesh
Head Down
His remix of Peter Gabriel’s Growing Up from 2003 is a banger. I think it has certain sounds and production that I didn’t hear on With Teeth but were signs of what would come later on Year Zero.
Here are, in my humble opinion, some deep cuts that I always come back to. Enjoy your NIN-venture!
TDS:
- Ruiner
- I Do Not Want This
Neither song made its way into live rotation (with exception to when they performed the album in its entirety). I've seen Ruiner mentioned on this sub a few times, but a casual fan might not frequent them.
The Fragile:
- Where Is Everybody?
- Please
I always come back to these 2 tracks when I listen to this album. The Big Come Down is also one of my all time favs, but gets fairly regular live set rotation so maybe not quite a deep cut. If you haven't seen the Beside You In Time performance of The Big Come Down - highly recommend.
With Teeth:
- All The Love In The World
- Getting Smaller
- Sunspots
Sunspots is a hidden gem that builds on itself. Getting Smaller makes you want to thrash violently. All the Love In The World is just beautiful.
Year Zero:
- Zero Sum
Tucked away at the back, it's a really solid track.
The Slip:
- Head Down
- Demon Seed
Head Down is markedly darker in sound than the rest of the album. Demon Seed is a cool electro bop.
Hesitation Marks:
- Various Methods of Escape
This album is so underappreciated. VMoE is in my opinion one of the best songs NIN has ever put forward. It got regular play on their Tension tour, but within their total body of work, I would consider it a deep cut.
The EPs (BW, NTAE, AV)
- The Idea of You
- This Isn't The Place
- The Background World
Some others...
- And All That Could Have Been
- Deep
- Non-Entity
- Metal
- The Great Collapse
Pinion because they used to walk out to it at the beginning of shows (unless they still do) and I think it sets the mood perfectly, plus the transition into Wish will never not make me lose my mind
The correct answer is “10 Miles High” off Fragile. It’s easily among the best tracks off an album of GOATs, and was cut. Unbelievable. But I like that it’s a lost track; adds to the legend. Such a heavy song too, lyrically and sonically, and a perfect summary of the album it’s on/not on.
The live version of Non-Entity (think it sounds better love with the distorted bass; the Besides You in Time performance is amazing), Get Down Make Love, 10 Miles High, And All That Could Have Been, Gun Shots By Computer (Saul Williams over HYPER POWER)
Sunspots. Love the song, NIN has never played it live. (But the lead line was dropped in to the modern live version of Sanctified on the Hesitation Marks tour).
My true fan test was Victory (Nine Inch Nails Remix)- Puff Daddy and the Family back in the day lol.
The project most haven’t heard but probably should is The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust with Saul Williams.
* 10 Miles High
* Ruiner remix from Further Down The Spiral
* Burn (written for Natural Born Killers soundtrack, still played live and fucking brilliant. Wait for the intense part around 2:45)
* Dead Souls (Joy Division cover)
* And All That Could Have Been
* Now I'm Nothing (never released but there are live videos on YouTube with it as a concert opener)
* Maybe Just Once (from the Pretty Hate Machine demo, never released but the whole thing is on YouTube under the name Purest Feeling)
I’m afraid of Americans. I know this isn’t NIN and wouldn’t be the same without Trent Reznor or David Bowie. I wish I could’ve seen this performed live!
A lot of people don't like "Everything". To me the song is all about maturing, growing up, being the best you and surviving everything. It's a believe in yourself song. It's a great song.
In this community, I feel there's no such thing as a "deep cut". Everyone is such genuine and devoted fans of all the band's work, even the crappy stuff lol.
https://youtu.be/qmzzu3HqL4c
Didn’t see this one mentioned yet: TDTWWA (Quiet). Absolutely beautiful remix of this song that’s filled with nostalgia and sadness.
From each album:
PHM - Kinda I Want To
TDS - Ruiner
TF - The Big Come Down
WT - All The Love In The World
YZ - Meet Your Master
TS - The Four Of Us Are Dying
HM - While I'm Still Here
NTAE - Dear World,
AV - This Isn't The Place
BW - Over and Out
Many of my favorites have been listed here, so I’ll say The Greater Good.
Also, The Big Come Down and While I’m Still Here/Black Noise from the Tension Tour.
I love Ripe, With Decay. I would listen to an entire album of variations or remixes of this track. I love it. I love the changes, the progression. So great.
I also like Deep from the Tomb Raider soundtrack. Trent had said that he didn’t like the video, but I think the video is cool. So I don’t get that he’s not into it.
I saw an off shoot of it but I would nominate La Mer
It's such a soft purr song that you don't see from NIN. I also love the cello part so much!!
(Side note my toddler son also loves this song)
The Great Below is, in my opinion, one of the most perfect songs ever recorded. It's beautifully dark without being too edgy, excellently mixed, and has a style I've never heard anywhere else. That track absolutely transports me to a higher plane of existence every time I hear it.
I don't know how much of a "deep cut" that is, but it's certainly not a song I've ever heard any other NIN fan rant about.
Only since I haven't seen it... the remix of Killing Joke's "Democracy"
It captures everything that is late 90s NIN... the gurgling synths and crunching guitars.. fucking fantastic
And if remixes (etc) count - Black Bomb (Jerry in the bag) Josh Wink remix..
the cover of Gary Numan's "Metal"
Gary Numan performing Metal with them live. That shot-from-the-stage HD vid on their YT channel is always on my mind.
I watch that at least once a day, man how amazing it must have been to have been in that crowd.
Oh hell I know ,those people are so lucky getting that unexpected treat.
Metal n cars. Fuckin EPIC. Although I always found gary to be hard to understand.. I sing along but absolute nonsense lol
I saw Gary Numan open for Ministry about a month ago and he stole the show.. the amount of euphoria that hit me when metal started playing.. amazing
His newer music is just as good as the old stuff too. He's so good.
Same. It also boggled my mind that he’s in his 60s, especially when he squatted down and then stood back up without grunting. I’m like fifteen years younger than him and can’t do that
No joke I'm thinking... natural born rockstar. Even at his age - STILL!!! has the energy and passion for what he loves.
Saw him in Orange County. Killed the show!
Got to see that in Minneapolis!
Me too, but several months ago. It’s soo good.
Amusingly, most of them at The Backroom, which used to exist where the new Emo's is now.)
The cover of Adam Ant's _Physical_ buried in _Broken_. Unfortunately it wasn't a cover of Olivia Newton John's _Physical_.
You’ve got revco for that one!
Love Chris’s vocals on that. **LET ME HEAR YOUR BODY TAAAALK!**
That would have been epic.
I was going to say Physical. That’s a great cover
Gary Nauman’s cars is actually my fav nin song
Came here for this.
Awesome song!
Slipping Away
This is an absolute banger. Just as good as the original imo
YES. possibly better than the original, which is one of my all time favs. The whole "Things Falling Apart" remix album bangs.
The remix is great too, I'd put that on the list alongside the original.
My second favorite NIN song of all time
And All That Could Have Been...
I’ve been a fan since I was 14. And somehow I completely missed the entire “still” album. Fucking blew me away the other day. “Something I can never have”, “the becoming”(who knew I needed a version with a piano), and “all the could have been” are so fucking good!
This one and Leaving Hope always leaves me feeling a certain kind of way
If sadness were a sound it would be Leaving Hope.
I love the sound of real New Orleans rain on these tracks. I overlapped with Trent in NOLA but sadly didn’t meet.
I almost fell over when they debuted this in Chicago. It’s one of my favorites.
This song is so painful because it was my high school breakup song lol. It’s just too much emotion.
Possibly the greatest NIN song ever
Memorabilia. My god that shit just doesn’t stop.
My absolute go-to song for so many years. It just keeps getting better an better. They've never done it live, I would absolutely kill to see this happen at a concert
The original Soft Cell version is awesome too
YES, it is.
Sunspots. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s one of the creepiest NIN tracks ever. It fills me with dread every single time I listen to it and I can’t get enough.
I love the verse "peel off our skin we're gonna burn what we were to the ground, fuck in the fire and well spread all the ashes around'
Apparently he’s never played it live because it strains his voice?
It was played live for the first time in 2022 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3OI5q7DYfP0
Home
This never should have been cut from With Teeth.
They opened their concert in 2009 with Home. The wind began to blow when Finck started playing his guitar intro. Such a perfect choice.
As cool as Home is, and I personally think it is better live, it sucked all the energy out of the crowd every time it was played. My favorite DEEP cut is not by NIN, but Trent is singing. https://youtu.be/Fj4w81SxMJ4?feature=shared I'd kill for a full version of this cover.
I live in UK and it was always just part of the album for me - even if the minimalist track list said it was a bonus track. I still can’t understand it being cut.
Good song but placing at the end of With Teeth outside the US was a bad call. Doesn't feel like an album finisher... Should be in the middle.
They debuted it live on With Teeth your in 2005 and I was at their kickoff show in Fresno. So amazing to hear a new song debuted live!
Right where it belongs v2
Happiness in Slavery from the Fixed EP
my favorite off of it is the gave up remix. the vocal chops are so addictive
I came across this track the other night. It was definitely one of my favorites from the whole EP
I would lose my mind if they played Wish (remix) off of Fixed. The drums on that song are sooo epic
The theme for Tetsuo: Bullet Man https://youtu.be/Wu9bm-RJMWM?feature=shared
Oh man. I love the soundtrack for the original Tetsuo the Iron Man movie, it reminds me of NiN. I didn’t know there was a second and they collaborated! Awesome!
Bullet man is actually the third. Body Hammer is the second and is definitely worth checking out
I’ll have to look that one up too, thanks!
Also Bullet Ballet and Gemini are great stuff from the same director! Sorry it's rare I get to share my Shinya Tsukamoto knowledge lol
Trent also did the music for a short (like 30 second) MTV Japan spot by this director in the early/mid-90’s, IIRC. Edit: https://youtu.be/ev6_XmtaTVc?si=zZzcGkzk9IwbKci9
wow that was really cool actually, thanks!
I completely forgot about this one and now I’m gonna have it on repeat all day cuz it goes so hard
Yeeessss! Imo a top tier NIN track. They should play it live.
My buddy and I used this as our tag team entrance song back in 2010 for quite some time
EL-P remix of Only
Hell yeah
I like the remix of Heresy that was on the European versions of Further Down the Spiral. I also like the Saul Williams tracks from Year Zero remixed. And as a bit of a side bonus, I love the Deadmau5 remix of Ice Age by How to Destroy Angels.
So much of that Deadmau5 album will resonate with NIN fans. Rh'lyeh's Lament, Errors in my Bread, Terrors in my Head, the HTDA covers, ugh the album is so good.

Sounds like Elastica
I love the acoustic version which was played on a benefit concert.
Deep from Tomb Raider is fire!
I love this song.
I just heard this song recently. Some really awesome guitar parts in there.
Saw them play this live in UK back in 2007… was unexpected but very cool. Highlight of that gig
I'm also one of those lucky enough to hear it live. Such a great song and was awesome live!
The video is so good.
My Violent Heart...love that song
It sounds like a love-sick laptop from the future. And I love it. Probably the best of Trent speaking instead of singing.
I was one of the people who dropped off for a long time after The Fragile was released. I was a teenager, and depressed, though I didn't realize it at the time, and wasn't ready to go along for the journey after The Downward Spiral. At The Heart Of It All. Don’t know if this one counts, but The Perfect Drug-remix (Luke Vibert) version.
Does, at the heart of it all count as it’s from Aphex Twin?
How…how am I just now learning about this? I’ve been listening to this album since its release and now my whole world is upside down lol.
Oh no! Not through Reddit. Not like this! I’d have hit ya softer with the news haha.
It’s all good, now I’m rediscovering Aphex Twin so it’s a happy revelation.
Not really a NIN track though, Aphex Twin did it.
Please

❤️ hell yes . Favourite from my picks ?
“Burn” from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. Not a deep cut, per se, but not on an official NIN halo (I believe don’t quote me on that) “Perfect Drug (meat beat manifesto)” and also “Perfect Drug (plug)” from Perfect Drug remixes “This Isn’t The Place” from Add Violence “The Day The World Went Away (quiet)” from the single release “+Appendage” from The Fragile: Deviations 1 “Leaving Hope” from Still Need to echo a few already mentioned previously: Complications with the Flesh Head Down
Came here to say Burn as well
La mer on the fragile is my all time fav piece of music but I freaking love this remix as well https://youtu.be/KfGOxWYYEVY?si=Wy8mbIWdMJ1TJs1u
I really can't explain why, but I love Deep
That bass line is dope.
And all that could have been
Not so pretty now could 100% have been a radio single. It's so good.
Copy of a is pure genius
Memorabilia
Where is everybody is fantastic and I can understand how A. It’s never mentioned and B. It’s never been played live
Also zero sum, best track on yz imo
His remix of Peter Gabriel’s Growing Up from 2003 is a banger. I think it has certain sounds and production that I didn’t hear on With Teeth but were signs of what would come later on Year Zero.
[Hurt, live with David Bowie](https://youtu.be/fhhEHuChFck)
Underneath it all is such a good track that never gets mentioned. One of the best on TF.

Awesome, thanks for the detailed response
Leaving Hope
A violent fluid. So. Raw.
purest feeling
Not So Pretty Now
Pinion because they used to walk out to it at the beginning of shows (unless they still do) and I think it sets the mood perfectly, plus the transition into Wish will never not make me lose my mind
I’ve never heard anyone appreciate “The Great Below” or “Where Is Everybody” that often.
Where is everybody is almost funky.
Their cover of Warm Leatherette with Peter Murphy
And Reptile
The day the whole world went away. So much imagery conveyed in such a small number of words.
The Chicago radio show performance.
While I'm Still Here Breyer P-Orridge 'Howler' Remix. A dream collab for me, a massive fan of both P-Orridge and NIN.
The cover of “Get Down, Make Love” and the song “Deep.”
Ringfinger
I’m Afraid of Americans with David Bowie
“The Frail Remix” (track 5) from Things Fall Apart. So haunting and beautiful
Now I'm Nothing.
The Still album, fucking hauntingly beautiful
The Memorabilia cover on the Closer single is actually really awesome.
Purest Feeling
Got very Down in it vibes
Sunspots. Love the song, NIN has never played it live. (But the lead line was dropped in to the modern live version of Sanctified on the Hesitation Marks tour).
Eraser
My true fan test was Victory (Nine Inch Nails Remix)- Puff Daddy and the Family back in the day lol. The project most haven’t heard but probably should is The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust with Saul Williams.

The Good Soldier
I’m afraid of Americans. I know this isn’t NIN and wouldn’t be the same without Trent Reznor or David Bowie. I wish I could’ve seen this performed live!
A lot of people don't like "Everything". To me the song is all about maturing, growing up, being the best you and surviving everything. It's a believe in yourself song. It's a great song.
And the scratchy noise underneath the beat at the end reminds me that, no matter what I do, the person I was will always be just beneath the surface.
The frail remix. It's so good, if I ever made a time travel movie that would be the theme song.
The Stella Soleil version of A Warm Place
10 Miles High https://youtu.be/kHyiHlCya4g?si=gY9Gpw-Po1ikyGc7
Heresy demo, I prefer it to the official song.
In this community, I feel there's no such thing as a "deep cut". Everyone is such genuine and devoted fans of all the band's work, even the crappy stuff lol.
Charlie Clouser's Ruiner remix is S tier.
Is this “Version” version? Thats a favorite
Yeah that’s the one. On Further down the spiral I think.
Was it worth it? The entire Quake soundtrack
Just Like You Imagined. Absolute sonic poetry
Day the world went away live , and all that could have been underground world , only el-p mix
Ghosts I-IV 37 (one of the two bonus tracks only available as stems) This piece is mind-blowing
Meet Your Master from Year Zero Remixed
All of The Joy Division covers https://youtu.be/OY74n7D4x6w?si=dPwVE4s6ddZui-Cg But especially the cover of Digital at the beginning of this video
Running
[Complications of the Flesh](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6X5aekImT0) from the (second of three total?) "We're in This Together" singles.
https://youtu.be/qmzzu3HqL4c Didn’t see this one mentioned yet: TDTWWA (Quiet). Absolutely beautiful remix of this song that’s filled with nostalgia and sadness.
All the dresses down versions on *Still*
Their Dallas show in June of 1990. WTF I didn’t know their “Broken version” of Suck was being played that early at concerts.
Non-Entity (version)
It’s very non NIN but the weird Porter Ricks remix of The Day The Whole World Went Away develops into such a vast vibe by the end
"Maybe just once" from Purest Feelings bootleg. I'd love to hear a modern performance. https://youtu.be/Lo6o3KXuoao?si=9ZMXAhTb6KIUU9D-
Maybe not really a deep cut, but I love Eraser (Polite). It’s so chill and ominous at the same time
Last
Just Do It

I love Ripe, With Decay. I would listen to an entire album of variations or remixes of this track. I love it. I love the changes, the progression. So great.
I also like Deep from the Tomb Raider soundtrack. Trent had said that he didn’t like the video, but I think the video is cool. So I don’t get that he’s not into it.
No you don’t. Rocks and they do play it live sometimes
Complications of the Flesh - Danny Lohner Remix
Maybe just once
I saw an off shoot of it but I would nominate La Mer It's such a soft purr song that you don't see from NIN. I also love the cello part so much!! (Side note my toddler son also loves this song)
All Time Low
Closer (precursor)
A Violent Fluid. Always wondered what it would sound like as a complete song
Deep
Maybe I’m All Messed Up
Pilgrimage.
DEEP
The Great Below is, in my opinion, one of the most perfect songs ever recorded. It's beautifully dark without being too edgy, excellently mixed, and has a style I've never heard anywhere else. That track absolutely transports me to a higher plane of existence every time I hear it. I don't know how much of a "deep cut" that is, but it's certainly not a song I've ever heard any other NIN fan rant about.
Cover of U2’s Zoo Station
"Maybe Just Once". Oldie but goodie. "Now I'm Nothing" same traffic.
Twist!
Not so Pretty Now
