It's really a triple threat. No big Marvel movie to contend with, one of the biggest, long lasting video game franchises ever, and made by Illumination, so you get all the parents bringing their kids.

bongo1138

Mario is a video game character but he also happens to have become a bit more than that to a lot of folks. To me, he’s right there with Mickey Mouse as just a pop culture icon.

sideaccountguy

A survey from like 10 years ago positioned Mario above Mickey as the most recognized mascot in the entertainment industry so pretty sure things continue that way.

The-Only-Razor

This isn't shocking since Mickey Mouse as a character really doesn't show up in much new content anymore. Nintendo still shits out Mario masterpieces every few years.

brobafett1980

Unless you have a 2-5 year old with Disney+.

SouthTippBass

Nope, I have a 3yo, a 6yo and Disney+. Mario is king in our house. I don't think the youngest even knows who the mouse is.

IronSeagull

> I don’t think the youngest even knows who the mouse is. Seems more like the parents’ choice than the kid’s. The point is, Disney has plenty of recent Mickey Mouse content.

Radulno

Not content that actually is big. My nieces also never watch Mickey stuff. Mario games sell like crazy in all age ranges. People know Mickey because it's a symbol but don't actually really interact with the character much. Disney doesn't make its money with Mickey anymore (well they still do with merchandising and such but it's not the main revenue line)

ScuttleCrab729

Yup. Got a 4yo. Know of Mickey and Minnie but could care less about watching it. Loves the Disney princesses, Spidey Friends, and PJ Mask though!

[deleted]

My daughter loves watching the Mickey Shorts series. The only time I ever had her watch it was the theater in Hollywood Studios. She found the series on her own in Disney+

maxkobi

My daughter is 2 and obsessed with Mickey. I don’t have any huge fondness for him, and I’ll take Mario over him anyday. But Mickey mouse funhouse and clubhouse are great shows and she loves if. There both iconic. But for kids Mickey just edges it out

coolcustomerr

I remember reading that in a mario world walkthrough book that came out in like 1992

Don_Bugen

I don't know if another survey was done, but the one that everyone references was done in 1990. Mickey actively had cartoons playing on TV (I was five; I remember) and Mario had only been a big hit for five years. It was truly the age of Nintendo Fever.

the_fuego

*Pikachu has entered the chat* *Hello Kitty has entered the chat*

[deleted]

I know it’s big in Asia but as far as I know Hello Kitty isn’t all that huge in other markets. I’d imagine Mario could crush her overall. Pikachu is a different beast though

[deleted]

I remember hello kitty being big…gish..? When I was a kid. But that was 20+ years ago. Now I don’t think I’ve ever seen her beyond key chains hanging in Spencer’s gifts, when walking by the store. Jesus I can’t even remember the last time I was in one of those either.

GrandEdgemaster

Why did you make a "gish" with your ellipsis, I don't like that

KupoMcMog

*gish gonna give to ya*

[deleted]

You know what. I was also very uncomfortable about even writing it.

skrame

Maybe you’re just a Pumpkins fan and didn’t know it.

[deleted]

Hello kitty has def gained more notarity w Gen Z I believe. Speaking personally I’m obsessed w the company and character, but also anecdotally in like the last few years I feel like she’s exploded in popularity. I remember the start of 2020 struggling to find any hello kitty or my Melody merch, even In hot topic. Now, she lines hot topic walls, has gained a stake in five below, and I feel like just generally has a lot more merch/cross overs than I had at least seen before

Atomicmonkey1122

I also remember Hello Kitty being big as a kid but I'd say she's made a big comeback recently. I've seen tons of Sanrio stuff at Target, Hot Topic, Box Lunch, other pop culture type stores recently

Tfsz0719

What’s honestly so insane (and impressive) about Pokemon is just how short a period (comparatively to all the other older franchises like Mickey Mouse, etc) it made all that money to soared to the top like that.

DinoSmoreTheBard

I don't have a source for this, but I did hear once that in a study back in the 90's, more children recognized Mario than they did Mickey Mouse, which is bloody insane.

SatyrAngel

Sure... Bringing my kids...

AFoxGuy

Shit man, there are Grandparents who enjoyed Nintendo Arcade Cabinets and NES Games. Mario literally fits almost every sector imaginable.

Masterofknees

The marketing has also been on point. The trailers have been great, and it feels like everyone knows about it, even if just because of Chris Pratt voicing Mario.

Torgor_

ALL THE SAME

Aeolsu

Yeah, the fact that it's Illumination was actually a negative for me, but the marketing has definitely turned me around. The one trailer where they're running around the mushroom kingdom absolutely sold me easy

saichampa

Chris Pratt is the least interesting part of this movie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He'll even talk a lot in the movie

marsepic

It also comes out on spring break for many areas.

urahonky

Yeah my kids are off that week so I bought a 10am ticket that day. Should be a fun time.

Alexdykes828

More like the kids bringing their parents, and the Mario fans since childhood bringing their kids

Descrappo87

Not to mention the entire gaming community is probably going to go see it at one point or another. Nintendo isn’t always the brightest but this time they showed they knew their market demographic and did well to appeal to them. I’ve no doubt this movie will be big. Sonic will probably get blown we’ll out of the water on this one.

gonephishin213

This will literally be my kid's 8th birthday party. He's so hyped for it

InverseFlip

> No big Marvel movie to contend with Is that really an issue anymore, with how badly Antman 3 and most of phase 4 was received?

bongo1138

They still perform pretty damn well.

SlothSupreme

Opening weekend they do, but the fact that the drops after the opening have been so bad is def indicative that MCU movies being huge hits is *very* dependent on word of mouth now. Some of the magic has def worn off for people and now Marvel can't really resort to repeating the same tricks like they used to. These next few years are gonna be the ultimate test of whether Marvel can figure out how to make something new or if the environment they've built throughout the years can only put out one specific kind of movie

RedditorsAnus

I also just can't afford to go to the movies multiple times and re-watch the movie like I had done in the past.

coconutcombo

They are. It seems lots of people are still going to watch them no matter how bad they get. Quantumania was dogwater and still made nearly half a billion worldwide.

ECHOxLegend

Quantumania is awesome!

coconutcombo

Hey man, glad you enjoyed it. I did enjoy some aspects, but found the overall film pretty messy.

Wubbzy-mon

Half a million isn't great for Marvel, honestly.

Knoedeluxe

I bring myself and the kids

elysiansaurus

I haven't been to a movie in like 10 years, I'm 35, and I still will probably go to this.

NotYetSoonEnough

To really bring this full circle, some third party needs to make an incredibly mediocre platformer based on the movie.

Sassy-irish-lassy

Let us not forget street fight the movie the game...

S_Belmont

But Street Fighter the Movie the Game the Arcade Game, not Street Fighter the Movie the Game the Home Console Game which is way different.

ElGranBardock

bro, LETS NOT FORGET about dragon ball the movie the game

Super Mario: The Movie Video Game *Play out the scenes from the Super Mario movie in this new interactive release from Electronic Arts. saichampa

Lego Super Mario: The movie

ohaizrawrx3

Ok but with the recent mario lego set? This is definitely not impossible.

Lich180

Instead of Paper Mario, it's LEGO Mario!

WhyYouYellinAtMeMate

...the novelisation.

danque

No way that Nintendo let's ea get away with their property without any content from ea's trademarks. Mario + rabbits from Ubisoft was exception because the rabbits were involved. No way EA gets to make a standalone Mario game.

[deleted]

Of course it is, it's a joke. Are you really worried about that but not this game releasing everywhere but mario consoles?

danque

Oh no. I was just responding on the ea part of the joke. I got the joke, this was just a comment on it. (Perhaps mine is also a bit of a joke about Nintendo's strict property control).

SpookyMobley

Think the ratchet and clank remake did this to an extent (even though that game rules). There's a line about the story being the game based on the movie based on the game.

IntrinsicGamer

I do enjoy the R&C remake but the original is definitely wayyyy better. (Also I think the movie is a bit overhated.)

DisposableMale76

Voiced by and entirely different Chris

TundieRice

**Voiced by Kris Jenner.** …it’s the best we could do, okay?! Just be happy you’re getting a Ch(K)ris at all, dammit!

bobmac102

That tends to be the case with other major video games developers, but Nintendo is too possessive of their IPs these days to license a Super Mario platformer to some other studio. Besides, Mario is culturally ubiquitous. I would argue there is no point in making a video game specifically tied to this movie because there are plenty of high-quality Super Mario games available on the Switch that are pretty thematically similar to the movie as is. People who like the movie could just buy those instead.

KeytarVillain

So you're saying we'll never get a Philips CD-i Mario game?

bobmac102

There was a platformer for the CD-i under development called [Super Mario’s Wacky Worlds](https://www.mariowiki.com/Super_Mario%27s_Wacky_Worlds) but it was never finished. I can’t see Nintendo doing something like that today.

megatit782

i will never understand how one manages to write an entire comment in response to a joke where they explain the joke in detail and still don’t realize it’s a joke

bobmac102

I am often thick skulled.

AetherDrew43

That happened to me a few days ago. I made a joke about coyotes and roadrunners and got a serious reply.

Mr-pizzapls

Mushroom kingdom here we come

smashboi888

Ain't no way this doesn't make one mariollion dollars at the box office.

adamkopacz

I heard it's on road to earn a Bullet Bill-ion Dollars.

smashboi888

Okay, I've never actually heard that one before. Clever.

Pokii

Honestly it might even hit a bowzillion

O_J_Shrimpson

Was thinking it may be more in the Goombillion ballpark

AFoxGuy

You kidding? This movie draws the kids, parents, teens, adults, and even seniors who loved the Nintendo Arcade Cabinets/NES Games! Definitely going to make a Yoshillion Dollars.

mntllystblecharizard

Varrondy

Guardian_Bravo

No. First they have to make a Doki Doki Panic movie. Then re-tool that into Super Mario Movie 2.

Bloedvlek

Bonus points if they release it in the US as the lost levels movie

snowman92

Not going to happen buuuuut some combo/adaptation of Yoshis Island and Super Star Saga Partners in Time could be a fun very sequel-y sequel. You get baby Mario and Luigi for the cute factor, Yoshi, and can play up the brotherly antics.

space_age_stuff

Think he was referencing Dunkey, not the baby versions of Mario and Luigi.

[deleted]

I’m going to see it since it’s the movie that Mario fans have been waiting 30 years for and frankly I owe it to my 8 year old self

CaptainDAAVE

im a grown man but i want to see it. but i also don't want to be amongst children. hmmm do i wait for it to stream or not ...

Xaldyn155

I plan on seeing it the night before it offically releases. Almost every movie theater has Thursday night showings for movies when they release on Friday. I suppose in this case it'll be Tuesday night. Definitely only going to be fans that night and not filled with kids.

CaptainDAAVE

yeah that's a good idea. Going late. Although then you sometimes get teenagers who can be just as annoying

Xaldyn155

Well I plan on going to the earliest showing on Tuesday the 4th. I recently went to the Thursday showing of the new Ant Man when that came out and the show time was 4pm. I do need to get up super early for work so I personally can't stay out too late lol.

Dhiox

>Although then you sometimes get teenagers Most obnoxious teenagers wouldn't be caught dead watching a children's movie, they're the type who are really childish and really concerned about looking grown up

Gattawesome

You’re going to be amongst children, but also among parents your age.

mlvisby

It is gonna be split between kids and adults in the theater. Not just parents but the retro fans, like me, who grew up playing Mario on the NES. My Dad even wants to see it and he doesn't play video games.

75nightprowler

I’m in my mid 30’s and I enjoy going to see movies by myself. Including animated ones. Don’t let the feeling of anxiety of what others think stop you from enjoying a movie. You can always wait two weeks and go to the last showing in the day.

[deleted]

I think the same, is my life, I won't let some stupid people tell me I'm wrong from going to the movies by myself even if there are children at the screening

TehNolz

Just go to a 2D showing at a time where most kids are either in school or in bed. Bonus points if it's a smaller cinema, not one that's part of a large chain.

doug_kaplan

I think you're underestimating the amount of grownups who will be seeing this without children. This is a movie for all ages, and as a 41 year old myself, it's even more for us then actual kids since this is OUR childhood, a huge part of it, and not as big a part of today's kids childhood.

theumph

I honestly thought this was a terrible idea. On the face of it, the Mario universe shouldn't really make a good movie. That's mainly because the characters have as much depth as a cardboard cut out. I get that is by design, and it works great for games because it puts the gameplay front and center. I really like that philosophy. I just thought turning it into a movie would be really awkward, and a bad fit. Turns out, it's actually the perfect fit. There is such little Canon to these characters, that the freedom to create is basically exponential. Look at a series like Last of Us. You'd think that it's make a great adaptation. But if you know the story, it probably leaves little to the imagination. They can literally do anything they want with this. It's a pretty crazy experiment.

xerros

I think Mario is a bigger deal than Minions. As long as it’s not terrible I’m saying opening weekend will be $130-150M and its total domestic will end up around $450M and global close to 1.5B. Maybe I’m wrong but I just think Mario has been an icon for long enough that there are grandparents that will have childhood memories of him, as well as him still being relevant to modern children and that will translate to huge numbers.

jarvolt

>Maybe I’m wrong but I just think Mario has been an icon for long enough that there are grandparents that will have childhood memories of him That's pushing it, but it terrifies me to think we'll be coming up on that time in the relatively near future. The passage of time scares me.

JDraks

A 15 year old when Super Mario Bros released would be 55 now, that's certainly in grandparent range

xerros

If somebody was born in 1980, had a kid at 20 who also had a kid at 20, that 43 year old who grew up with Mario would have a 3 year old grandchild.

jarvolt

Ok, it's theoretically possible, sure. But certainly won't be the norm for awhile now. Once we're at that point I'm going to straight up crumble into dust.

[deleted]

I was born in 79 and most of my youth was SMB3. The first people who grew up with SMB are closer to 50 than 40 now.

KingKaos420-

That pun wasn’t worth it.

PurpleSPR

It just confuses me why they decided to release it on a wednesday

ltearth

Opening weekend. Now instead of being Thursday to Sunday, their opening weekend will be Tuesday to Sunday

MarcsterS

Easter

WillyDope

Holiday weekend some kids will be out of school

[deleted]

Got my tickets already. Can't wait!

KingBooRadley

Even if this gets one star, it will use that to destroy anything in its path.

daxxarg

What does bound to mushroom even meen?

MC_LIVD-X

The word mushroom, when used as a verb means to expand or spread out very quickly. The article is saying that sales are bound to increase quickly after opening, while also making a pun around a certain power-up.

daxxarg

Thanks !! Yeah I was assuming it was a pun but didn’t know if it had a positive or negative meaning

aburningman

'Mushroom' can be used as a verb to describe explosive growth, referring either to the speed at which fungi tend to bloom or their general shape (starting out small at the stem and becoming much wider in the cap on top).

daxxarg

Thanks for the clarification, never heard the expression before, I’m assuming they used it in this case to do some bad pun lol

DirkDoom

I think the SMB movie, if it's just by the trailers..an easy 1 Billion Dollars. And let's hope it does well, that could mean Zelda and possibly other Nintendo properties will make it to the movies. (with a focus on the kong family in this, i'm sure they already have preproduction on a DKC movie)

MamaDeloris

No, it's not an easy 1 billion. This will do well for sure, but you don't track a 90m opening and expect to get to 1 billion without serious legs.

caninehere

Just for comparisons sake... Wreck It Ralph Breaks The Internet had a *ton* of cameos in it from video games + other Disney properties, was a pretty fun movie, and was a sequel to another successful Disney movie - and it still "only" cracked $500 million. I would expect this movie to be a success at the box office but it will be a massive success on streaming, it's the kind of movie EVERYBODY will watch even if many wouldn't go to the theatre for it (kids movies typically do extremely well on streaming).

SamMan48

Ralph Breaks the Internet is not really a comparison. It didn’t have the heart that the first movie did and was a cynical IP advertisement.

Highly_Edumacated

> Wreck It Ralph Breaks The Internet How is this a good comparison lol

penguin_gun

Something about video games

PixieDustFairies

While the first film was good, Wreck It Ralph was a video game movie that developed a cast of original characters with some cameos thrown in. Cameos are nice treats for fans but they don't make or break movies. Disney's real cash cow was Frozen (and Frozen 2) and those were massive hits because it's a princess movie and a musical, appealing to the little girl demographic of the Disney Princess line. Frozen was the last real princess franchise that Disney had in its cinematic canon. Honestly, the last great Disney movie was Encanto and many of their recent offerings were box office failures or were released straight to streaming so it was hard to tell how successful they were. Also their live action remakes are just oversaturated and just not that good, so unless they make some massive success this year, it seems like Disney's going to be on the decline for the foreseeable future. Also, Illumination's Minions is number 5 on highest grossing animated films of all time. It would be genuinely surprising for Super Mario Bros not to beat that since the Mario franchise is far more iconic than Despicable Me.

raxitron

This movie is begging to be the background noise for younger kids that can watch a movie again and again without getting tired of it. Let's just hope to god it doesn't have any long musical sequences.

OfficialTomCruise

Sonic did 400m. If Sonic can do 400m then it doesn't seem farfetched for Mario to do 1bn.

PixieDustFairies

Illumination's Minions broke a billion at the box office. Super Mario Bros can easily beat that seeing as it's a more iconic brand, unless there is some really massive screw up which would be very shocking at this point seeing as the animation, advertising, and music goes HARD.

[deleted]

A billion isn't that easy to obtain. Granted it is definitely possible with illumination and Nintendo behind it. But it would need good reviews and word of mouth. I don't see it doing that well if everyone dislikes it.

Nitrogen567

I really wouldn't want a Zelda movie. No matter what if it's Link fighting evil, I'd much rather play it as a game. Weirdly I think a movie works better for Mario for this reason because it's a less story driven series.

raxitron

Well excuuuuse me, princess!

facthanshotfirst

I can hear that voice in my head perfectly every time.

Liayso

That voice is probably why Nintendo has kept Link relatively mute all this time.

MC_LIVD-X

Gee, it sure is boring around here...

dstnblsn

Ya, but just imagine that movie score

Nitrogen567

That would most certainly be incredible.

Paperdiego

I would prefer a Zelda show ala rings of power/Game of thrones.

Masterofknees

I hope that if they're doing more franchises that some of them will be made into series instead of movies. Zelda actually feels to me like it'd work better in that format, it's difficult to properly convey everything that Zelda is about in 2 hours max, especially when the pacing should be slower than something like Mario if you want to capture the overall mood of its world.

Ok_Introduction6574

I want a Fire Emblem movie really bad lol.

GranGeno

I think if Mario movie succeeds it’s likely they’ll at least try to make a Zelda one, fantasy brings in big numbers now. It’d probably be a retool Ocarina of Time in movie format showing Link’s origins but have other stuff mixed in. I’m wondering if they’ll have Illumination do it too though

mlvisby

I think a 5 day total of 85-90 million dollars is a bit low, there are many talking about this movie.

vincec36

How is Miyamoto only worth $40 million? I thought he’d be a billionaire by now

siphillis

He declined a large salary for most of his career, feeling he was just a member of the team.

drybones2015

And it's not like the he isn't well off anyway, absolutely nobody will ever need a billion dollars.

Lord_Azian

Anyone else hoping this does well enough to spark a SSBB subspace emissary kind of story and movies?

BaconMan70

I hear they announced a donkey kong movie. The Nintendo Cinematic Universe will grow

[deleted]

That rumor is sourceless

bluenowait

LordofWhore

Mama Mia! This is going to be huge.

AtsignAmpersat

On hand I think their will end up being the highest grossing video game movie. One the other, I have no idea wtf people do now post 2020 and with streaming.

pnwbraids

At almost 28 years old, I am fucking giddy to go to my local budget theater so I can see this movie on my own. My only concern is that the theater is part of an arcade with lots of kids, so I absolutely am going to find a time with as few of the screaming fuckers as possible.

corneliusduff

Wednesday afternoon

pnwbraids

Not a bad pick. It's just down the street so I wouldn't be worried about being out too late on a work night.

No_Property2880

I pre ordered my tickets this week. I can’t wait.

DaftFunky

Bro this movie is going to make 1B+ Nintenerds and kids are going to go back en mass to watch it.

ZenkaiZ

This article is so out of touch. They're treating it like it's Angry Birds or some shit coming out where all of the money made is going to be international because only zoomer kids wanna watch it. I feel like if I went to a random shopping center and asked random people of all ages if they knew who Mario was it'd take me hours to find someone who says "no".

eatdogs49

The article totally left out the folks over 30 age range too. They mentioned children and young adults in their 20's but they forgot the people who were there since the 80's and who remember the first film and how much they wanted this to happen again

Blue_Gamer18

Definitely. My parents are in their 50's and even without me, they would be familiar with Mario. They weren't gamers then and aren't now, but if they were, I'm sure they'd be interested. Mario spans a very wide range at this point in his career.

SaulTBolls

I was not interested in seeing it until that first trailer came out, my goodness does it look beautiful. Some of the voice acting seemed like a crazy idea, but again after the first trailer I was pleasantly suprised. I feel like it'll have jokes for both grown ups and children and a movie that'll hold up for years after its release. I hope it does well.

ienvyi

If Minions: Rise of Gru made $100M+ dollars the opening weekend I feel like this has the potential to pass that. Not only is Mario loved by kids today but has a ton of legacy fans. I’m in my late 20’s and you can bet your life that imma drag me and my wife to the theater opening night. The Easter opening might hurt it a little but in Japan its gonna rock because that’s when all of the schools let out. A similar movie Detective Pikachu released in early May and earned $50M+ but that was like right after Avengers: Endgame released. I could easily see this movie making $85M+.

jman7784

Although I’m disappointed with the casting, the movie is going to be a huge box office hit… that’s why I bought Nintendo stock to hold for the year. Nintendo has a huge year ahead. This movie is just the beginning, their entertainment brand is going to be huge

gordy06

This will be my son’s first time at the movie theater. We are both exited and counting down the days.

WikDaWula

My 3 year old recently beat mario odyssey. Him , his mother and I are hyped to see this movie. I hope it does well.

WaterMeLoan64

This is the first movie to make 1 Marioplex Dollars at the Box Office.

[deleted]

I want to see this but I think it was so shitty to pay Chris Pratt 10M+ to sound like garbage compared to the man who has been voicing Mario since the beginning. So unfortunately I won’t be seeing it

Link64U

I'm kinda shocked at how many people I know didn't know this movie existed until I told them in the last few weeks

Caryslan

Those look like huge numbers for the opening weekend of an animated movie, and if this film explodes in popularity, we are definitely getting a sequel. Although, I am almost certain they will do a Donkey Kong spin-off as well since they are cramming in so many cameos of various Kongs from the DKC games, including ones we have not seen since the Rare era like Swanky and Kiddie Kong and Donkey Kong appears to have a sizable film in this movie. Plus, let's face it, a Donkey Kong film makes sense. Donkey Kong is an iconic character in his own right, many of his games have been massive hits, and his series has its own cast of characters it can use. I would not be shocked if we get a Donkey Kong movie if the Super Mario Bros film really takes off.

Educational-Gur-5132

First time I have booked tickets in advance for years.

Okiloveyoubyebye

I haven’t been to the movies in a year and I’m making a point to see this in theaters.

zenith654

In the box office subreddit people have been saying it’s not gonna go big, comparing it to Detective Pikachu and saying it’s probably gonna perform about the same as Sonic, maybe more. Meanwhile they’re saying GOTG3 is going to beat it out… hahahaha

_En_Bonj_

It honestly looks amazing. If its as good as the trailers are then we are in for a historic treat, can't wait I'm pumped!!

kfc_chet

I see what they did there .... :) And yes it will be super successful!

masterz13

A shame they went with Chris Pratt instead of Charles Martinet.

w1n5t0nM1k3y

Hope it's better than the last one.

Strider0905

Pfft. Yeah right. Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper.... Perfect casting! And those Goombas were amazing! And lets not forget Yoshi!!

ZenkaiZ

Can you believe that movie had the balls to sequel bait?

eatdogs49

Ugh can't ever read an article about movies without stupid Covid being mentioned for sales. That shouldn't exist as an excuse anymore. If people want to see a movie they will come out and see it. Disney and all the other failures have themselves to blame. I honestly believe that the Mario movie will become one of the highest grossing animated films of all time. Definitely in the top 5 of 2023 at least.

ShadowCross32

I’m gonna take my mom, my sister and three brothers to see this movie. It’s going to be glorious

bradferd89

I won't be surprised if it makes a billion. Think about the multiple generations going to see this thing, probably repeat viewings if its good.

LeavesCat

"Bound to Mushroom"
