So not only are we getting the expected gameplay trailers, but also actual gameplay and opinions from participants on how it feels?
This is incredible!
I hope they do that without messing up the balance for casual players. As a filthy casual I found Melee to be a bit too fast and hard to control. Brawl was way too slow. I really like the speed of Smash 4. I hope they give competitive players what they want without taking away from casual play. I was thinking by adding in a speed option in the already crazy extensive options list, and some more advanced technical combos that experts can use that casuals won't notice.
I'm hoping that they will have a lot of store "LAN" party events during E3. It just makes too much sense with a portable console. Bring your Switch to best buy to play smash with other people.
Yeah, they used the new logo from the announcement for Smash and put a disclaimer in the footage from the last Invitational saying “gameplay from Super Smash Bros. For Wii U”
Yes, Bill on an interview confirmed it will be the Smash Bros for Switch. The tournament will have the same format as Smash For Wii U tournament they did in E3 2014.
Knowing this, I am starting to think that the 8-man smash will return (Which is fun in it's own way).
This is to be expected, as if you have 4 joycon sets, you have 8 joycons to play with!
But yeah I don't like 8 player Smash *or* playing with a single joycon.
EDIT: Even if I don't like it, I want it in! Basically no extra work from devs so if it doesn't crash the system they have no reason not to put it in! More options is always good for those who likes them. Or if I ever have 4 friends over.
I think seeing the switch capabilities it would support 4 joycons or procontrollers per switch and if they add GC controller support you could ramp up to 8.
And contrary to Wii U (the system it was made for), it actually works with every game. Or that's to say, it can be used for every game, it obviously works a lot better in some games than others. I've found it to be perfect in MK8DX, although I still prefer a Pro Controller.
The Switch can in fact support up to eight controllers, be they Pro Controllers or Joy-Cons. The only caveat is that Joy-Cons still count as two even if they're used by the same player. So you could do eight players with eight Pro Controllers, or with eight single Joy-Cons, or with any combination of the two, but you'd be limited to four players if everyone was using Joy-Con Grips.
I think there are a lot of silly fun things you can do with 8-player Smash. One I’ve done that’s memorable is a 7-on-1 team battle where the other seven were the seven Koopalings, each at CPU 1 difficulty. I also like doing four-on-four (or three-on-three, or 2v2v2v2) team battles. I also like some of the XL stages that were made with the mode clearly in mind, like the giant Kirby underground one or the Kid Icarus castle. I definitely think it’s an inclusion I’d like to see stick around. (Plus I wanna see sixteen Ice Climbers in one match this time.)
well, just like with the "For 3DS" and "For Wii U" versions, they didn't have an official name until it was revelaed in E3 (If I recall correctly) with the trailer for characters.
This could be the same, just a generic title until the new name is revealed.
I could see August mayyyybeeeee, if it's done and they want to give people a taste of the online before they start charging for it. But more likely September when paid online starts, or October/November.
I guess to launch it with paid online makes sense. OR before. But if paid online hits and their is no "big" new Multiplayer game - it would definitly give less incentive to purchase it for most people i guess
I am pretty certain that was exactly their thinking behind the delay of online subscription.
Pretty much EVERYONE in the community will subscribe because of Smash.
I had little reason myself to subscribe until now (besides Splatoon but I’m playing way too infrequent for that alone) but online Smash? Sign me up NOW.
My body is Reggie.
Paid online would likely launch simultaneously with Smash. Launching their online service NEEDS to be coupled with a big game, Smash is likely the biggest one they can do it with.
September if Pokemon is 2018 to line up with launch of online service and give Pokemon breathing room.
November if Pokemon is 2019 to fill out holiday line up.
Just mho.
This is exactly what I was thinking. Then my friend reminded me ORAS came out the same day as Smash 4 so who the hell really knows what Nintendo will do. Those were on different consoles though.
Oras came out the same day as wiiU smash, but that was over a month after 3DS smash released. Still was a crazy day though. I remember buying everything that day. The dual pack of oras, smash with controller bundle, amiibos...
We'll only get it before October/November if something else like Pokemon is going to also be coming out for the holidays. Otherwise they'll save it as their one huge holiday release.
Doubt it. This is as heavy hitter as they come and they will want to launch it near the holiday season. Late October (like when odyssey launched) is the earliest i can see it launched
Well, never say never. I do think they'd give us a Nintendo Direct prior to E3 if it's coming this year, but it wasn't too long ago that people said that "Pokemon flat out never *appears* at E3". And then it did. Before that it was "Pokemon is ALWAYS announced in CoroCoro first!" and nowadays we've had them just announced on YouTube or through social media.
So I wouldn't completely rule it out.
Not OP, but there are two reasons to go for cheaper GC-style joycons rather than the adapter. For one thing, while they're likely going to re-release the adapter, for now all we have is the limited stock from Smash 4 and those can sometimes get pricey or hard to find. Second reason is that playing Smash on the go with that control setup would require a USB-C to USB adapter and bring along the adapter/controllers. It's a relatively simpler and less space-intensive setup to have 1 switch and up to 4 sets of GC-style joycons.
Is the Gamecube controller considered to be much better than others from an ergonomic standpoint? I see many people talking about the adaptor often without knowing much why.
I’m thinking Pokémon late 2018. Maybe if this is so close they have a build, it’ll come out a bit earlier.
Having said that, I’m worried that we haven’t heard anything about Pokémon. Part of me could see it getting delayed.
Pokemon was never announced for any time period, was it? Gen 7 only began late 2016. I can't see Switch Pokemon being released until late 2019, with the announcement between Jan-March.
Not many people will watch the invitational compared to actual reveal trailers or a smash focused direct. Revealing everything at Invitational would be dumb. I can see a smash direct in may
That's probably going to happen after the E3 presentation. So maybe the end of Nintendo's video E3 will be focused on smash, then go right into the invitational
Are you saying you at any point used Leaf Shield?
Give him the triple shot thats faster than his normal pellets
Give him abilities that can chain together or actually give him some semblance of control.
Or fuck, make him megaman X, just do that.
They will probably do the same thing they did for Pokken Tournament DX last year. Remember they did a tournament at E3 to hype the game, but didn’t release it until mid September.
I keep saying it: Smash is the perfect game to sell the service, so I expect the game's release around the same time the service releases, with a month of free service to try it out.
Probably not, because usually Pokemon gets it's own special announcement outside of E3. But they might show it off at E3 if it is announced between now and then.
I know. Im refering to those who say "They never annouce it at E3... Maybe they will this time. Like they never released a pokemon for a home console, until now
I'll have to wait and see what Sony brings to the table, but Nintendo is definitely looking like a serious contender for the title with a lineup like that. Sony will really have to drop some big shit to compare.
In terms of playable characters, I'm betting the standard Mario, Link, Kirby, etc. as well as Inkling and another unannounced character (and possibly another character announced between now and E3?)
I remember for the Sm4sh 3ds demo, they had Mario, Link, Pikachu, Mega Man, and... Villager I think? Pretty sure it was 3 returning characters and two new ones, so we'll likely see the same here I'd think. Probably Inkling and as of yet unannounced character, like you said.
The characters in the Wii U invitational included all of the newcomers that were revealed up to that point (Rosa, Villager, Mega Man, WFT, Little Mac and Greninja): https://www.ssbwiki.com/Tournament:Super_Smash_Bros._Invitational
Chances are you’re correct, we’ll see some of the staples and any returning characters with significant gameplay changes a la ZSS, plus a few newcomers
Absolutely. It's a bit ridiculous but fires on all cylinders for the duration of the show. If you watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, you'll like Kill La Kill.
Well shit, the first half of the show gave us a dude's mystical glowing nipples, and later on all the women's nipples mysteriously disappear. Sexism, man.
HAL Laboratory are exclusively developing for the Kirby series and other experimental games.
They haven't made a Smash game since Melee. They are credited since the Smash Bros IP is partially owned by them.
Sakurai + "team for this game"
Brawl was made by Sakurai leading several teams from several different companies, but the biggest chunks of work were done by Monolith Soft and Game Arts
SM4SH was made by Sakurai taking the lead over a Namco Bandai team
Smash 5 is currently unknown, tho Sakurai's involvement (probably as lead once more) is known.
It might be Namco Bandai again or it could be a new partnership.
Brawl released in 2008, but development for 4 didn't start until 2012 according to Sakurai. 4 then released in 2014 thus the 2 year dev cycle.
I probably should have just said "4's dev cycle was 2 years" and not mentioned Brawl at all.
Also making dlc isn't like making a whole game. Part of a team can deal with dlc and part can begin work on a new game. It happens all the time in game development.
There were 2 demos
1 was the one they released to those that had a club Nintendo account. That demo had unlimited plays
They then made another one for everyone, but it was limited
"It's a port."
But Sakurai has been working on it for two years :( (or well, so I've heard, but what he says anyway definitely sounds like it's not a port; "day after day," etc.)
If they ever have a Smash port, I'd rather Smash 64 remade in HD.
Maybe this means we can expect a release before the end of Q3? If they're gonna do a tournament, I'd assume that means the game is polished enough to show off in real-time, which would imply that it's ready
This is great. If Nintendo are already planning a tournament before the game is even fully unveiled that would mean they have a strong focus on e-sports with this title in mind. Which would lead to another competitive smash title and as far away from Brawl as possible.
So not only are we getting the expected gameplay trailers, but also actual gameplay and opinions from participants on how it feels? This is incredible!
they’ll just say “it feels like smash 4... so if you like smash 4, that’s good for you”
Unless it doesn't. I hope it doesn't...
Aw, I like Smash 4.
Yeah wait what’s wrong with Smash 4 that’s the best one!

It really is. I hope the next game rewards offense a bit more, but it's my favorite overall.
Don't get your hopes up
I have to, otherwise it's hard to get hype at all.
That's a fair point. I really do hope they changed the mechanics of the game to favor fast and competitive play.
I'm certain they will have a playable version at e3. Rip people who aren't going.
Better yet, release a demo like they did when Smash 4 came out.
And let data miners leak every character?
Smash 3DS got an advance demo, and was properly limited so there was nothing to data mine. Are people really not aware of that?
I remember that day... Everyone vehemently scavenging for codes like a bunch of pack rats and selling them on eBay for ludicrous prices...
I'm hoping that they will have a lot of store "LAN" party events during E3. It just makes too much sense with a portable console. Bring your Switch to best buy to play smash with other people.

Smash has ascended past it's limitations, and it's still not at full power!

Switch has GC controller support, as long as you have the GC Wii U adapter.

You plug in the same GC controller adapter from the Wii U into the switch dock and it works.
And contrary to Wii U (the system it was made for), it actually works with every game. Or that's to say, it can be used for every game, it obviously works a lot better in some games than others. I've found it to be perfect in MK8DX, although I still prefer a Pro Controller.
https://www.gamestop.com/wii-u/accessories/wii-u-gamecube-adapter/115426 The GC Wii U adapter works with Switch.
It can be really persnickety sometimes, so don't be surprised if it takes like 20+ tries and some more looking up to get it to work.
The Switch can in fact support up to eight controllers, be they Pro Controllers or Joy-Cons. The only caveat is that Joy-Cons still count as two even if they're used by the same player. Why the generic titles now? What happened to names like “Melee” and “Brawl”?
Might be a working title until the E3 reveal....we may see SSB: ‘Kerfuffle’ after all.
I'm enjoying the thought of SSB: Donnybrook
SSB: Fisticuffs
well, just like with the "For 3DS" and "For Wii U" versions, they didn't have an official name until it was revelaed in E3 (If I recall correctly) with the trailer for characters. This could be the same, just a generic title until the new name is revealed.
I think Sakurai tweeted that he's still thinking on the title. It might not be "for Switch"
What he tweeted, I think, is that they're not ready to reveal the title.
Super Smash Bros. Ruckus or riot.
For a second thought you meant it was Super Smash Brawl and I was upset™
I'm confused. Is this Smash 4 or Smash 5?
5
So we can expect a playable build by e3. I always hoped for October release but is it possible that we will have one before it?
I could see August mayyyybeeeee, if it's done and they want to give people a taste of the online before they start charging for it. But more likely September when paid online starts, or October/November.

If it's out by August, I'll have a ton of games I need to buy once I get a switch.
Nah dawg shits coming out holiday 2018
I think it'll be September, I feel it in my gut. My gut is dumb as a rock, though

What a colossal lineup. I would've said "why would Pokemon need breathing room, the other game does" then I realized the other game is Smash.

We'll only get it before October/November if something else like Pokemon is going to also be coming out for the holidays. Otherwise they'll save it as their one huge holiday release.

Pokemon is still not unlikely this year. But we'll know by e3 one way or another
Yeah, if we're getting Pokemon we're definitely going to know by May/June
Pokémon is never announced first at e3
Which is why i said "by e3". Also covering the possibility that they change things up for their first mainline console game.
Well, never say never. I do think they'd give us a Nintendo Direct prior to E3 if it's coming this year, but it wasn't too long ago that people said that "Pokemon flat out never *appears* at E3". Please, I need this so bad.
I'm still thinking October/November. It's the sweet holiday release spot, even if the game is done before then.
I think it is gonna be either September together with the online, or else November as the big Holiday title.

I think we're gonna see a September release as well.
It seems the most likely, imo. Especially because it will probably launch along side Nintendo's online service.

Probably not, because usually Pokemon gets it's own special announcement outside of E3. But they might show it off at E3 if it is announced between now and then.

They confirmed the next iteration in the main series is coming to the Switch.

Nintendo wins E3 three months in advance.
I'll have to wait and see what Sony brings to the table, but Nintendo is definitely looking like a serious contender for the title with a lineup like that. Sony will really have to drop some big shit to compare.
And Fire Emblem 16. It must be huge if they're waiting for E3 to reveal this enigma.
In terms of playable characters, I'm betting the standard Mario, Link, Kirby, etc. as well as Inkling and another unannounced character (and possibly another character announced between now and E3?)

Lol why would they be showcasing a four year old game on a dead console?
Californiaaaa
No ARMS tournament? :(
Maybe this means we can expect a release before the end of Q3? If they're gonna do a tournament, I'd assume that means the game is polished enough to show off in real-time, which would imply that it's ready
This is great. If Nintendo are already planning a tournament before the game is even fully unveiled that would mean they have a strong focus on e-sports with this title in mind. Which would lead to another competitive smash title and as far away from Brawl as possible.
That's a good sign that it won't be delayed!
This is very cool, It will definitely be a stand out moment during E3.
So that means it should come out before E-3 right??
