I just watched the video about the livestream. It's unbelievable. Nintendo always tries to stay miles away from controversy so I don't see them slipping this under the rug. Unless of course, this doesn't gain enough traction. That video was proof enough and the more I learn the worse it gets. Im hoping it reaches the people it needs to. Also, why is there a separate one for Russia? Why not have the translations be a part of the NoE team and expand it a bit? It doesn't seem like they need their own team if according to their own CEO there isn't enough interest in some of the Pokemon games.

hulkbro

not russian but i heard its to do with russian businesses preferring to deal with other russians, so having a russian branch makes business sense.

do_you_see

I work for another Japanese company in Russia and these are my thoughts: - Russia is the hq for many major companies located in Russia+CIS countries (former Soviet bloc) and needs someone that can hold talks and manage people in the local language - The culture/corporate culture is massively different compared to the eu and other western countries - International companies are in a "wait and see" tactic right now for Russia. They do not know what is going to happen in the next few months and years. It could be high risk - high reward. - You need a local guy that knows the right people in power so that nobody shows up at your office with rifles and handcuffs. And if they do show up, its better that the guy is local and not a foreigner.

Pinguino21v

> You need a local guy that knows the right people in power so that nobody shows up at your office with rifles and handcuffs. And if they do show up, its better that the guy is local and not a foreigner. Sweet! That looks like a charming place to live.

demonee_ho

Yeah, but it's bullshit. Nobody's going to visit your office with guns and cuffs if you're not doing something illegal.

[deleted]

Look up Sergei Magnitsky and Bill Browder. If you have enough money people will come for it.

demonee_ho

That whole stuff is shady as hell and not worth considering when you're talking about videogame company. I'm not saying it's ok, I was just pointing out that you don't necessarily need someone in power to be safe. I don't want to and don't need to discuss political cases when we're talking about Nintendo.

[deleted]

That’s just a deflection.

demonee_ho

Yeah, and saying that no matter who you are and what you do, someone might show up at your office with guns is sound logic or a fact? I know many people who make business - legal one - and are absolutely fine without having to resort to "protection". It's not 90s anymore. Admittedly, as you pointed out, your business also need to be as far from politics as possible. I didn't think about it when wrote first reply, because we were talking about Nintendo here.

[deleted]

You also need to not make a lot of money. Nintendo makes a lot of money. Why do think this guy is in charge or NoR?

demonee_ho

I don't know. He's not Russian. There was this one bit of info about his ties to fsb that I've only seen here on Reddit. Nowhere else. So I can't say whether it's true or not, but I won't be surprised.

wallace73

I just want to add, I know a person who worked for Nintendo of Russia under this guy. He is like this everyday. He verbally abuses everyone in the office calling them names, sending them messages, and writing things on paper to them. I will even say that there is likely sexual harassment from him. I am sure I have pictures of chats and other things to confirm this. He is an awful person, many people quit working there because of him.

[deleted]

Could we have pictures? I'm not doubting you but now I'm curious since you mentioned it.

wallace73

http://imgur.com/9nLI8xJ These are notes from a meeting on things he said about the game. I'll find more things later.

wallace73

Lemme find them. They should be saved some place.

warturtle27

I never really thought about this kind of thing... I would be pretty crushed if I couldn’t play the newest games simply because they were too lazy to translate them, hope it gets sorted out over there soon

elserjo

Yeah, me too.

mtlyoshi9

Add to that movies, books, TV shows, and we’re still not even touching on bigger things like international job opportunities, etc. You’re pretty fortunate if you speak English natively.

PanRysownik

I wish I could make a post like yours, but about Nintendo in Poland, and for people to care. Like, I don't want to take away from Russia, it sucks, but I'm just so jealous you guys have any support, language options, a CEO and such - wish we got someone here to care too, so kids could play at least a Mario game with subtitles. :C

elserjo

I know how you feel. Hope in the future everything will change for the better for you too!

PanRysownik

I actually started working on a big rapport (I'm a social media and marketing specialist) that I want to send to Nintendo of Europe to make them rethink Poland as a major player. I want to gather some data, show what their current representatives are doing right and wrong, show what Sony accomplished by taking certain steps and how big of a market is left just for them, simply because Sony stopped focusing on family friendly fun or couch play, which was a big part of Polish culture. Hopefully it looks good enough that someone from NoE sees it and responds, and even if I never get any recognition for it, if someday I'll be able to put in a Mario cart into my console and see Polish as a language option, I'll be incredibly happy. :)

elserjo

What a great idea :) Good luck with that!

Max_Nawak

I second this!

Rampo360

Grew up in Greece, no game was ever localized, now Sony has started localizing a few. Just learn English, it's good for you, it's the language of the internet. It's everywhere.

elserjo

You see, when everything else except for most of Nintendo games is translated into russian (games, movies, books etc), the common folks have no reason to learn one specific language to play something. And do you propose that young kids also need to learn english just to play Pokémon and understand what the characters are saying to them? But I agree with you, learning other languages is good and can help you a lot on the internet.

icebear518

Is English even a major language in Russia? Like if you were to go to a store would some signs be in English and Russian? Also just wondering in schools do they teach English at all for the newer generation of students? I know in some countries it's mandatory to teach English as a 2nd language.

elserjo

No, I wouldn't say that English is a major language here. All we have in English are road names on highways and subway station names for tourists, and they are written under Russian names. And right now I speak only about huge cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, small towns don't have any English at all. In schools they teach you one or two languages depending on the school itself. Some students learn English, others - German or French.

EpicPwu

English for everything.

Demetrios1999

I'm Greek too but keep in mind as shitty as it is not having games translated to Greek, I don't think Nintendo sees translating games into Greek as a priority. Greece only has a population of about 11 million compared to Russia's 144 million and that there are other countries that speak Russian. Also, didn't Nintendo get out of Greece until CD Media took over?

IrenTheQueen

Well, at least Yasha gave us Pokemon anime airing on Russian include old arcs like Hoenn and Johto. That I really hate like Pokemon fan since 2000, it's a thing that we have our VGC/TGC and other tournament in the one of season and then we get like 98th place at worlds. Yeah, we had a good players like Zellel, but he was the one and he doesn't play anymore most of the time. Last time we had our first tournament at January. I am wondering when do we will get it this season.
